Chapter 208 Trivia

Brody-Os! Part of a complete breakfast.

Magma is posed here like Senku is in the manga volumes' character introduction pages. He's also next to Senku's two best friends rather than Nikki and Yo.

I don't think it means anything but Magma did beat Senku this chapter… Is Magma the replacement for Senku? 🤔

We finally see Joel's arm, and it does seem to be fully functional given he's rapidly weaving donuts between Luna and Yuzuriha (while blushing, because he still hasn't gotten used to women).

I think this implies that broken/crushed bones heal similar to piercing wounds.

The mathlympics coincides* with the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, and the little icons on the banner they faxed are based on the ones Japan used for the sports.

*Technically the closing ceremony was a few weeks ago but the manga was on break.

This panel is interesting: either they're saying this person was revived 51st in Corn City and had the number written on him, and that it stayed on his skin despite having been written on the outer/damaged layer of stone, or that tattoos don't count as healable injuries.

This could mean that the petrification only heals life-threatening injuries, as Soyuz's head scar and now this tattoo (technically the body treats the foreign ink as an infection of sorts) have stayed.

This does imply Kaseki's arthritis was considered life-threatening though…

If the number on the soldier's arm was in fact his revival number, then the population of the world is probably close to Dunbar's number already, since 51 + 75 = 126, plus the Spaniards, making the total Earth population ~150.

The corn harvest here may be telling us Corn City has been back up and running for the last 60-100 days, as that's about as long corn needs to grow. If we assume the start date is October 1st, then it would be around late November/early December now.

(It could also be much earlier if this corn was still the corn growing naturally over the last 7-8 years, rather than them planting it.)

Just for fun I compared the ring size to Kinro's thumb width and I think it's accurate, at least it is for my hand. His hand is a little smaller than I was expecting though…

(0.5 * 33.6 = 16.8mm if you want to check your own thumb!)

Just because nixie tubes are cool, this is how the calculator number display looked. Depending on the noble gas/gases they filled it with, it could be orange-yellow, blue, or purple-pink.

(They should also have 12 pins on the bottom, one for each number+decimal point+1 anode)

Gen mentions they're crossing the Indian Ocean, so I guess Math City is considered established now. The next ones are Rubber City and Aluminum City, but since they're both across the Indian Ocean from India, they could be going to either one of them. Rubber is closer, however.

The scrawny scientists are fine, but Magma is too big for his contestant podium and has to straddle it.

Magma's studying payed off, he can read numbers!

The calculator itself is a 32 bit floating point calculator, has four functions (+, -, *, / ) and with a display that shows 12 digits, the sign (positive or negative numbers) and status (for example if a number is too big to display or some other error).

The name on the calculator, Senku Intelligent - 1, may be a /very/ loose reference to the TI calculators you likely used at school, though "TI" stands for "Texas Instruments" rather than "Texas Intelligent".

These candies Minami's has next to her are definitely corn syrup based, and are probably getting stickier by the minute because sugar candies should be stored in an airtight container and that looks like an open jar.

If anyone's confused by how Ryusui Bank works, I believe the plan is to add and subtract any transactions people make and save their totals on the calculator, or keep a paper record of it (=ledger). It's entirely trust based, there's nothing of physical value being traded.

The time difference between India and California is 12 hours 30 minutes, so it's probably mid-morning for the ones on the Perseus and evening for the ones in Corn City, going by the skies shown.

From what I could tell, all the magnetic memory parts were basically exactly as they described them, including the little history lesson Senku adds on page 8. There just wasn't much more to add! (I know I said this before but I loved this chapter haha)

Recently, I have gone through Robbe/Sander tag on ao3 and I decided to compose a list of fics that are absolute gems for me. A few disclaimers first:

This author is my queen/king alright? They take a simple idea and turn it into the most lovely/cute/soft story. This fic is exactly that. Sobbe’s chemistry here is out of this world and the banter is to die for.

Summary: Sander discovers that Robbe has recently been prescribed antidepressants, and Robbe opens up to him about the night he almost stepped off the bridge. Only love will show how much they’ve grown and pull them through.

This time, the boys talk about Robbe’s mental state which is unusual in fics. This oneshot is communication 101. And this line is just 👌🏻 “But after the dust of their first kiss and their first vows of commitment settled around them, Robbe took a look at the space in which he floated and realized, somewhere along the line, that finding the love of your life doesn’t fix you.”

Summary: Waking up feels like an ordeal. His eyes are heavy, arms a dead weight, he isn’t sure if his limbs are even in the right places, but eventually, Sander comes to. (a.k.a a take on how Sander fairs after Robbe left for school.)

Sander’s POV after Dinsdag 7:27. It’s a great insight into his headspace during that time. This could be a scene in the show because it fits so well.

Summary: Two city boys go camping. What could go wrong? (Everything, apparently.)

Those boys are a chaotic mess okay? They’re such dorks. This fic has the best kind of grumpiness there is and sobbe is written so in character here.

Summary: Robbe and Sander at the Christmas market.

Can you imagine those two dorks at the Christmas market? Well you don’t have to anymore because this fic is everything you need and more. And this line “Couldn’t,” Sander sulks. “You can’t hold hands properly with mittens on.” makes me go all gooey inside every.single.time 😍

A New Sunday Feeling by Foxsake5 | M

Summary: Sander before Robbe: Ugh, Sundays 😒 Sander after Robbe: 😏🥺🥰

The way this author writes sobbe’s intimate moments is just pure talent. They have such way with words.

Summary: Saint Nicholas is the perfect excuse for an evening of gifts and banter with the flatshare. (Basically all five of them being cute together, and then Robbe and Sander being cute with just the two of them.)

This is the perfect fic for an October evening, when Christmas is just around the corner and you’ve just made yourself a cup of coffee and want to read some heart-warming well-written christmassy fluff.

Look. I get that smut fics are not everyone’s cup of tea. And that’s totally fine. But. If you’re looking for a well-written smut that’s in character and where you can feel the love between the characters, this is it. Hands down. Sorry not sorry 💁🏼‍♀️

Misunderstandings lead to pining. Teenage angst at its finest. I really like camp stories, it’s my thing.

Summary: Robbe only knows one thing about football: that Sander Dreisen is the hottest player on the FC Utrecht team. When Jens drags him to a match, the last thing Robbe expects is to meet someone so perfect, and it’s all he can do not to mess it up, but will he succeed?

Sobbe in a different setting with a bit different dynamic yet still having that special something. It’s a nicely written story of the development of their relationship, first meeting, falling in love, ups and down, all the best things in fics. And Sander as a soccer player is a pretty 🔥 concept (and I think Robbe agrees).

Summary: One moment they are in the kitchen of their shared apartment, the next, they’re in this strange but familiar room.(a.k.a the au in which they accidentally go hopping through multiple universes)

The universe takes matters into their own hands and shows those silly boys that they are meant to be. Sign me up for the ride.

Summary: The universe brings two lonely boys together in a flowering meadow. They fall for each other fast and hard among delicate daisies, warm summer breezes, and shooting stars.

This is magical. My comment on the work was “So soft, so beautiful, so THEM, ugh.” and I MEANT that. This is just the right amount of sweetness. This is a must read. I’m not messing around.

Oh and did I mention pining?

This is a long series okay? But oh so worth it. It’s captivating and you don’t want to stop until you finish. And once you finish you’re sad it’s over even though you’ve just spent 8 fucking hours reading it. It’s amazing. But you probably know that because it’s quite popular (rightfully so). The best thing is that you expect it to go bad halfway through because it’s difficult to keep the quality on the same level in a fic that long. But it doesn’t.

so. once upon a time way back in october 2013 zayn debuted a new tattoo of a tiger on his arm. at the time it seemed like just another tattoo in a quickly growing long list of (random) tattoos, and went by relatively untalked about among fandom (at least afaik) for a couple of years. but THEN, in early 2016 zayn followed that tattoo up with the addition of the full title of his m.o.m. album spelled out around the tiger...

seems normal, right?

first off, notice how the tiger’s tail is shaped suspiciously like an L?

well, that’s not all that’s gay i mean odd or interesting about this tattoo lol...some have also noticed that the muscles of the tiger’s back quite remarkably appear to resemble the muscles of a certain boy whose name also starts with L

(and no i’m not talking about louis lol)

but here’s where shit really gets real because guess what? you may have noticed that the letters of the ‘mine’ part are kind of shuffled in an odd/not really consecutive order to spell out the word mine in a way that’s clearly or easily readable...that’s because zayn’s extra ass arranged it specifically so that only the i, e, and m, are all directly around the L-shaped tiger tail, while the n is just off to the side like a lonely forgotten reject

by now you might be saying to yourself okay, well that’s not really all that significant to liam, and the L could just be a coincidence/not really mean anything, couldn’t it?

wrong again!

because once more, zayn ‘i live to be as extra as humanly possible about my love for liam james payne because i don’t know any other way to live’ malik made sure to put a little tail/extra line on the side of the letter ‘e’ to make it interchangeable with an upside down letter ‘a.’

now again you might be thinking i don’t know if that’s really intentional or all that meaningful. but look closely.

there is clearly an additional connected piece on that e that cannot be explained away or mistaken for just a weird blot of ink. it’s not just an error on the part of the tattoo artist (if it was i’m sure zayn would have had it fixed by now given that he’s had that tat for over 4 years at this point) and there’s also no letter ‘a’ in ‘mind of mine.’

so why is it there? and why does it just so happen to be right next to the i, the m, and the L-shaped tiger tail. why did zayn choose to arrange the letters of the word ‘mine’ in such a weird order instead of a more normal/easier to read format like the rest of the album title? and why did he choose put those exact letters all near each other? because it’s intentional. and because it’s meant to have a very particular double meaning.

if he was going for just a random order he could’ve put those letters anywhere. but he didn’t. and more than that he went out of his way to make sure that that additional piece on the e was added and distinct so that it could very clearly double as an (unnecessary) a.

there’s no way you can argue that all of those things are just coincidence or that the random letter ‘a’ means absolutely nothing lol. that tattoo was clearly meant as both an homage to the album and to liam (who the album is largely believed to be about lol). and the fact that the muscles seem to match quite closely to liam’s is a nice added bonus that just helps confirm that imo. (plus there’s also the lovely little tidbit of knowledge that the tattoo is positioned in such a way that whenever zayn wears short-sleeve shirts the ‘Liam’ part is the only part clearly on display 😏😏😏)

BUT GUESS WHAT??

THAT IS NOT EVEN WHERE ZAYN’S TATTOO DEDICATIONS ENDDDD

never mind that he already had all of us ziams sobbing ourselves to death and morphing into withered soulless husks over this tattoo after he debuted the full thing in 2016, but there’s so! many! more!

boy’s body is literally a giant ass open love letter to liam and i am NOT OKAY. (have i mentioned i hate these extra ass romantic saps with every fiber of my being? no? well i do. and you’re about to find out all the reasons why)

anyway there are more tattoos of zayn’s that seem to also be related to liam (though more loosely imo) but this post is already beyonddd long enough so i figured it’s best to just stick to the main ones/most obvious ones here lol

(side note: liam also has tattoos that are clearly dedicated to zayn/his and zayn’s relationship as well, but that’s for another post and also if my recall is correct i think zayn might actually have more?? well that we know of anyway lol)

(side note 2.0: one other thing that adds to the theory of the m.o.m. tiger tattoo being a dedication to liam/liam’s name, besides the obvious lettering thing described above, is that zayn is known to have a thing for tattooing the names of his closest loved ones on his body. the only person in his immediate family whose name he doesn’t appear to have tattooed on him is trisha’s and i’d be willing to bet that’s either because she specifically asked him not to, or he does have one but it’s just in a very hidden place. but we know that he has his father’s name, grandfather’s name, and all of his sister’s names tattooed on him so when you combine that with the weird lettering of the m.o.m. tiger tat and the fact that the album was very likely about liam/closely followed the story of the beginning of his relationship with liam, it becomes even less plausible imo that that tattoo is meant to be about anything else but liam. ain’t science grand?)

(side note 3.0: zayn’s whole left arm/left sleeve of tats seems to be specifically reserved for tattoos dedicated to liam and/or related/connected to liam’s own tattoos, and there’s a couple of good posts here - x, x, x, x - that go through some of the more specific parallels between their tattoos and how certain ones seem to mirror or directly pair with each other’s)

lastly, to your final question, i do believe that they are still together currently, especially considering this most recent soft outing/confirmation from one of zayn’s songwriters (who is also not the first to do that either btw lol) but that is not the only reason - see my post here for some of the biggest reasons why i believe ziam remains real and strong :)

Part 1

On October 7th and 8th, the non-audience concert at the Nippon Budokan was held. How did you feel?

There is no one in front of me. If you want to say how I felt, I can say you can’t compare it to a normal performance (lol) and while performing with a feeling that I hope it can be conveyed (to the viewers) well.

Singing acoustic the first day, band performance on the second day, how do you feel about your performance?

In terms of performance, I didn't do anything particularly difficult. Because it's just playing guitar and singing, there’s no difficulty. So the concert was a pretty safe/successful performance, right? (lol)

Why did you start playing the guitar?

My elder brother has a guitar, although I played several times when I was a kid, I was frustrated with the F chord. I bought my own guitar for the first time when I was 15-16 years old. At that time, I bought an acoustic guitar, so my second guitar was Fender’s Telecaster Deluxe. Then I wanted to install a Bigsby (a vibrato device) so I made a hole myself & broke it, & the tuning couldn’t match at all (lol)

Why did you choose Fender's Telecaster Deluxe?

I didn't have an electric guitar, I was thinking about buying an electric guitar... I wonder why? Maybe because John Frusciante (of red hot chilli peppers) and Kazuyoshi Saito often used fenders. So I've always admired Fender.

How did you feel the charm of guitar when you started playing guitar again at the age of 15-16?

I simply think guitar is really cool. Because if you want to form a band, you will first practice guitar. The mesmerizing feeling when playing solo is very cool, it feels like a painting. I probably felt like this at first. Also, you can play and sing with a guitar, right?

What kind of practice did you do?

I was practicing while looking at the music sheet. In my previous group, I didn't play the guitar solo much but rather focused on rhythm guitar (accompaniment guitar). So, I had to practice with an emphasis on rhythm.

Why were you particular about rhythm guitar?

Singing and playing is the main premise, so at the Nippon Budokan's distribution live, I only played a guitar solo, and I made a slight mistake in that solo.

Do you not want to want to play a guitar solo?

If I can play as well as John Scofield (jazz rock guitarist) I will play it all the time (lol) but I’m still longing for it. That's why I want to learn jazz guitar and know what it's like. I bought an instructional book about jazz guitar. The reviews says if I play it every day for 3 years, I can become really good. However, the time span is very long & I was frustrated after 4 days (lol)

(lol) You’re still a guitar and vocalist now.

But I have many musical instruments at home. There’s a bass and drums, and the bass is also Fender. I think it's better to experience all the instruments. I don’t want to add some unreasonable trends or improvisations. Therefore, a certain degree of understanding is better. That said, I’m not experienced with the other instruments. I don't really like the act of talking about things that I don't understand at all, so I think I have a basic understanding of all kinds of instruments, regardless of whether they can reach the level of playing it live in the end.

I think you must have a lot of guitars. Is your fender’s guitar a Stratocaster?

I have 4 Stratocaster & 2 Telecasters.

What is the difference between Stratocaster and Telecaster for you?

It depends on the feeling. I’ll decide "This is the tune!" in my mind. Telecaster is used when you want a punkish & loud sound and the Stratocaster's front pickup is also fun to play with. When I absolutely want to use this guitar without any special attachment, I just decide by my own heart.

What is the charm of Fender?

First of all, the logo is very cool. In fact, my own car’s seat belt also uses fender straps

I have about 8 Fender guitar straps, and the seat belt is custom-made. Because it is an old car, the seat belt is also worn out. And even though this was a car I bought at around 23 or 24, I drove it proudly thinking "I am so trendy to have come up with this (strap) at that age" (lol)

Why did you choose Fender among so many belts?

I still think the logo is classic & cool. After all the logo is a symbol. The silhouette, the lines, the sound of the guitar is also very cool. The why I like the look of Fender's guitar. That said, I recently bought AMERICAN ACOUSTASONIC TELECASTER.

Oh!

I wanted it after watching people playing with the Acosutasonic guitar. Although during the live broadcast at the Nippon Budokan I only used acoustic guitars, because (this guitar) also comes with a looper. I want to take the AMERICAN ACOUSTASONIC TELECASTER & loop it while playing. But I feel that it was too hard and I left at home (lol)

Part 2

The first singles "Silence" and "キッチン" of the second album have already been released in October, and it is decided to release the album on January 27, 2021. Is the guitar used for the composition?

Of course. Basically, I use a guitar. But silence is made not with guitar but piano. It’s just that even if I play the piano, I remember more of the chords or guitars, so I did it again with the guitar.

Do you usually play guitar at home?

Yes, there is a guitar in the living room.

Is for writing songs?

Because I really can't write songs, so I often play just snippets. I didn't think about anything but playing the guitar.

Is Fender used for the new album released in January?

Of course. Fender guitars have always been used in songs, and I definitely use them when I want the sound of a telecaster.

Among the various options such as actors and idols, why choose musicians as a means of self-expression?

Because so far I haven't worked wholeheartedly (as a musician). Only had the experience of having fun like part-time job. And the current situation has no other option besides being musician. But sure enough, basically I still love music. My family loves music. Every Wednesday is Karaoke Day, and the family will always go to Karaoke together. Therefore, inadvertently the music is around, listening to music and playing music when you like it. For me, it is a matter of course.

Do you have a dream or vision as a guitar and vocalist?

I think it’s good to be able to move with the times and maturing. I don't know what will happen two years from now, I don't even know about tomorrow. I can only go with the flow. Do what you want to do as much as possible during that, if someone is happy because of it, I will be happy too. To be honest, I don't have that long-term vision. As long as it is something you can do, you can try anything.

The form of music is also changing, and perhaps following the trend/going with the flow is also important. However, I want to pass on the joy of playing an instrument to future generations.

I think so. Although is the era when you can compose music even without playing an instrument and using a computer, but the "gong" sound from an audio amplifier is definitely different, right? In the end I still prefer the loud sound from the amplifier. Even though there are many sampling software for drum sounds, in the end I still prefer the sound from real drums.

Understood. Do you have any suggestions for beginners who are starting to learn musical instruments now?

Sure enough, you still have to love it. It’s impossible to not want to play well, if you don’t love it, right?

In the time you played guitar so far, what moment felt the best?

I am not very proficient in guitar now. But using the knowledge gained from that to create melody and turn the melody into chords such things become natural. But without that, I couldn't imagine becoming who I am now. And then, I am very happy to be able to share the feeling of "this guitar is so cool” with others. Saying "Because of this guitar, I am where I am now", although I'm not so convinced of myself that I can say it, it would be nice to be able to say it one day before I die.

So in the end, what do you think of the AMERICAN PROFESSIONAL II TELECASTER for this shoot?

Looks very cool, what colour is it?

It is a new colour, named [Dark night].

It’s a nice colour. I don’t pay much attention to the neck this guitar is easy to hold, and the rosewood fingerboard is rare. Because I only have TELECASTER with maple fingerboard.

Will the encounter with a new musical instrument bring new inspiration?

I hope new imagination will emerge (lol). I don’t know much about the age of the guitar at all, so I choose the guitar emotionally, and I want to enjoy it as I like.

Enjoying yourself is the most important thing.

3. What order do you write in? Front of book to back? Chronological? Favorite scenes first? Something else?

Oh blimey. What a first question. I WISH I could write out of order, but I can't. So, basically for me it's, Chronological and Front-to-Back.

When I re-outlined the Fey Touched Novels, I've added a short story that takes place prior to the start of book one, so even though I currently have 17k of book one written that I did during July's Camp Nano, I've now had to go back and start with the short story first.

*facepalm*

8. Favorite genre to write?

Fantasy, by a huge margin. All Fantasy. Contemporary, Urban, Epic, etc. As long as it has magic in it, I'm happy.

It's also my favourite genre to read.

I also enjoy writing in Sci-fi, and Romance, but Fantasy really is where my heart resides.

15. Why did you start writing?

Interesting question, but it actually has a pretty shallow answer because when I started writing I was 7 years old. I didn't put a whole lot of thought into the decision.

I started writing because I was good at it.

I had wanted to be a ballet dancer, but I was born with congenital talipes, which made being a professional dancer an impossible dream. So then I tried art. I wanted to illustrate books, although I didn't know that's what it was called at age 6. I tried for about 6 months, and then decided that I was so bad I gave stick figures a bad name, and abandoned it. I decided that if I couldn't illustrate books, then I was going to write them instead so I gave writing a try and... I wasn't bad at it!

My brother had a copy of David Edding's writing guide called "The Rivan Codex" and I read it cover to cover, and tried writing my first Epic Fantasy Book around the age of 8 or 9 years old. My main character was called Derwin and because my only exposure to elves at that point had been in reading Lord of the Rings I thought they needed very long, very pretentious names. I called my elf character Beladiedian, a fact that @faelanvance has never let me live down.

I still have that first manuscript somewhere, half of it's written in my mum's eyeliner pencil because my pen ran out of ink, and I think I managed to get through the first 12 or 13 chapters, before I started noticing the flaws in it and moved onto other things.

But that actually encouraged me because I unlike art, where I noticed the flaws but had no idea how to fix them, with writing I was noticing the flaws when I'd discovered or learnt something new. I already knew how to fix the errors I was seeing and that was encouraging, so I kept writing.

I moved into fanfiction writing when I was about 11-12 years old, and wrote fanfiction in a variety of fandoms for years and years. I'd still dabble in original fiction, but I used fanfiction to practice. I didn't have to spend months world building to write a piece of fanficton, I could dive right in with premade characters and an existing world, and try something out to see if it worked.

Around age 13 I started doing written role-plays with a friend in american who was also a writer, and alongside that roleplay we would do short-stories, taking it in turns to write a piece from our characters point of view. We learnt a lot from each other and developed different skills and techniques.

Eventually, late 2018/early 2019, when I was 27-28, I was writing a Doctor Who fanfiction. It was huge, I was doing a season rewrite, and a Doomsday fix-it, and it was in the 20+chapter/250,000 word range and was only half complete... and I was telling @faelanvance all about the plot outline I had prepared and what I was going to do with it and she casually tossed out; "That's great, but why aren't you spending that time and those words on your own writing? You've already written a quarter of a million words, you could have published a book by now."

She was right, of course. She usually is. So I decided to give it a try. It had been several years since I'd tried writing my own work, I'd suffered severe creative burnout in 2016-2017 and hadn't written anything at all, so I carefully approached writing a stand alone fantasy book, Stolen.

6 months later that project had morphed into a 6 book series, and I had the first manuscript completed at 145,000 words... That was October 2020 and the rest is history.

Bringing this back around to your question, I realise this was an overly-long response but... I started writing because I was good at it, shallow but true. I didn't give up on writing because I could see how I was improving, unlike with art, and that motivated me but I think the reason I stuck with writing, and continued writing, is actually none of those reasons.

I think the reason I'm a writer is because, I don't know how to not be a writer. I have characters wander through my mind on a regular basis. Sometimes they stick around and I have to tell their story, and sometimes they're gone again, presumably to bother some other poor, unsuspecting writer. It's kind of funny actually, because I saw a quote literally two or three days ago that kind of perfectly sums up, in hindsight at any rate, why I started writing and why I've continued.

It's a quote by R.A Salvatore and is says;

Alice Cooper: Too Close for Comfort Coming to Downtown Wheeling's Wesbanco in October

WesBanco Arena made two major concert announcements this morning. Alice Cooper: Too Close for Comfort tour will be coming to WesBanco Arena on Sunday, October 8, 2023. Ice Nine Kills and In This Moment: Kiss of Death Tour with special guests Avatar and New Years Day will visit WesBanco Arena on Saturday, December 2, 2023. Rock legend Alice Cooper pioneered a grandly theatrical brand of hard rock that was designed to shock. Drawing equally from horror movies, vaudeville, and garage rock, the group created a stage show that featured electric chairs, guillotines, fake blood and boa constrictors. Alice Cooper’s albums and singles are iconic in rock & roll. “School’s Out”, “No More Mr. Nice Guy”, “I’m Eighteen”, “Billion Dollar Babies”, and many more. In 1975, Cooper released his first solo album “Welcome to My Nightmare”, accompanied by the groundbreaking theatrical concert tour. From David Toop Maybe these titles, torn as they are from cinema screens and the pages of literature and philosophy, give a feeling of romantic or sexual love or some dark pool of nostalgia but that’s not it, or it could be if you want it for yourself but not for me, not now; for me it’s about the teeming proliferation of complex events in the world, their vivid, hyperreal intensity as this human life steps closer to its end and their sense of fading, like a mist that thins out to leave not a clear bright day but almost nothing of substance as all that beauty is crushed, burned, dug up, wiped out, to be replaced by banality, so it’s about a language of love and desire in which we speak openly to all the unknowns, the speculative, the ancestral, the forgotten, the different, the extinct, the unimaginably distant and vast, the incomprehensibly small and intimately close, the fast or the slow, as if as we spoke we were becalmed in a wooden galleon off the coast of Java, sleeping microscopically in soil of a thousand years hence, hearing the voice of a dead person from the rim of a vibrating cup, gliding backwards and weightless through the alleyways of a city unrecognisable yet heartbreaking in its poverty, speaking in conference with winged and amphibious beings, crouching in a cavern whose opening only reveals the spectre of many wonders now apprehended as memories of the skin, heard through cheekbones, nostrils, the crepitation as a neck turns, pains of the knee and thumb and some not yet fully understood sensation within the throat which suggests a way of comprehending that which is being lost of this magical place. All I desire is what already exists or once existed, now falling asleep outside the world. Don’t ask me about genre or consistency. Who cares? Half the world is drowning; the other half is in flames. Each story is an animal, a plant, something you drink, a surface you touch, a faint line, some memory emanating from a cardboard box. “’Things’ in themselves are only events that for a while are monotonous,” wrote Carlo Rovelli in The Order of Time. Maybe sounds are melting ‘things’, tired of the monotonous real. Apparition painting is the term used to describe a certain type of ancient Chinese painting of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. In these works, often associated with Chan (Zen) teachings, the ink used to depict the subject was exceptionally pale, the background lacking in any detail. As Yukio Lippit has written: “This combination results in remarkably self-dissembling images that somehow compromise their own visibility. Apparition painting appears to capture its subjects in mid-fade, as if managing to preserve only a dimly translucent afterimage of a bygone entity.”
