— Wanted: A Gentleman, K. J. Charles (2017)
That's the emotional thread that runs through the whole novella, coupled with his conflicted love for the Conroys' daughter he helped raise. It runs in parallel with Swann's own shackles of ursury and exploitation, which, while not comparable with Martin's bondage, still inspires his empathy and compassion.

White Girls in the Early 2000s Took a Crash Course in Blackness and Discovered Their Voices . . . Somehow? 🤷🏽‍♀️
Get ready for the teen dance film showdown! Today, we're deep diving into Save the Last Dance and Bring It On. Which film holds up better after 20+ years?
I’ve said it before, but my love of movies was much more shallow as a teenager than it is now. I used to see movies as a way of turning my brain off and just blindly enjoying a fantasy. I wasn’t critical of what I watched the way I am now. And, so a lot of movies I watched back then escaped some much-needed scrutiny. I can’t even remember when I last watched Save the Last Dance, let alone how I…

Nazanin's POV
"𝗜'𝗟𝗟 𝗦𝗘𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 later, babe. Love you." I bogusly smiled, kissing my boyfriend on the cheek.
"Love you too." He replied, keeping his attention on the table.
Narrowing my eyes at him, I walked out of the door. I stepped off the elevator to Eva's rental car and got in the driver's seat. After starting it up, I drove around the block and parked several vehicles behind Marcos.
About forty-five minutes passed when I saw Marcos walk out of the apartment building. I turned the car on and waited until he pulled out of his parking spot to follow him.
It was a good twenty minutes that I followed him until he pulled into a space at the park. I knew he was here meeting that bitch Destini. He got out of the car, walked to a picnic table, and hugged Destini.
The fucking nerve of him hugging his ex-girlfriend, then turning around and coming home to me. They sat at the picnic table talking, laughing in each other's faces like a big happy family. My blood boiled as I watched them. That rage came over me.
My breathing got heavy, and I just exploded. I banged my fists on the steering wheel repeatedly. How fucking dare Marcos treat me like this? I've given up everything to be with him. How could Marcos do this to me?
Watching them, I knew he could NOT get away with treating me like this. He must learn that there are consequences to cheating on me. Pulling out of the parking lot, I drove down the road and went to Eva Marie's house. I typed in the gate code and walked upstairs to her apartment. Within seconds she answered the door after I knocked on it.
"Hey boo, what's wrong?" Eva asked, eyeing the expression on my face.
"I can't take this shit anymore!" I screamed, grabbing a throw pillow off the sofa and tossing it across the room.
"What happened now?" My best friend asked, closing the front door.
"I followed Marcos before I got here and saw him go to his baby mama's house and hugged when she answered the door," I explained, plopping on my best friend's sofa.
"Did you confront him?" Eva questioned, sitting next to me on the couch.
"No," I answered, shaking my head.
"You should've. There's no way he should get away with that." My best friend pointed out, shaking her head.
"I know that, Eva. I don't know what I should do." I replied, nibbling on my bottom lip.
"Do you want to get back at them or what?" My best friend questioned as a wicked grin appeared on her face.
"I do." I nodded, smirking at her.
"What did you have in mind?" She asked, raising her eyebrow.
"Something they'll never forget." I grinned as the wheels in my mind started spinning. A grin came to my face as I explained to her my brilliant plan.
"I love your way of thinking." Eva nodded in agreement, smiling at me.
"By the time we're through with them, they'll never forget about me." I laughed, rubbing my hands together.
"Which is exactly why we're best friends." Eva smiled, hugging me lovingly.
Destini's POV
I stood in the kitchen with Alayah as we rolled dough in our hands. She wanted something sweet, so I decided to make chocolate chip cookies.
"Roll the dough and put it on the pan," I instructed my daughter as she had trouble rolling the cookie mix.
"Like this?" Alayah asked, looking at me for confirmation.
"Exactly. Good job, my love." I nodded, smiling as I leaned down and kissed her cheek
Aaliyah placed the last rolled-up dough on the pan, and I set it in the oven. She wanted to set the timer to twelve minutes, so I allowed her to do that because she wanted to help.
"How long do we have to wait again?" My daughter questioned, stepping off the stool.
"Twelve minutes," I replied, cleaning up the mess.
I put all the ingredients away and sat at the kitchen table, waiting for the chocolate chip treats to be ready. While the cookies were baking in the oven, I scrolled through Instagram on my phone when I came across a post that Marcos made.

I laughed at the comments of my friends before the timer went off. Alayah screeched as she came running into the kitchen.
"COOKIES!" She screamed excitedly, jumping up and down.
"Stay right there next to the counter. It's hot." I replied, placing an oven mitt on my right hand.
Carefully, I pulled the pan out and placed each hot cookie on the rack to cool off.
Twenty minutes afterward, I picked up a cookie and bit into it, hissing at the heat of it. I grabbed another one and handed it to my daughter. She bit into the treat, and her eyes lit up.
"It's so good, Mommy," Alayah said, nodding in approval.
"I know. We did good." I smiled, giving my daughter a high-five.
"Let's make chocolate milk." My daughter beamed excitedly, bouncing on her feet.
"You got it," I replied, laughing as she made a silly face.
Grabbing the gallon from the fridge, Alayah picked up the syrup while I got two cups out of the cabinet. I helped her pour the milk, and she squeezed the chocolate inside the mugs. My daughter handed me a spoon, and we mixed the contents in the glass. There was never a moment in my life as a mother where I didn't want to be around my child because I love her with every fiber in my body. I enjoyed our little moments together and cherish them.
I'm glad I ended up having her because when I found out, I was hesitant about raising a baby, especially by myself when Marcos was locked up.
Marcos's POV
I stood outside the ring shadowboxing near the heavy bag as Dominic prepared to spar coach me. He walked over to me.
"So, for today's lesson, we will work on your punching power drills," Dominic announced as he checked the wraps on my wrists.
"Got it," I replied, nodding in approval.
"So, each round, you're going to throw your fist as hard as you can against the bag," Dominic instructed, showing me a demonstration. "The first round is going to be your jabs. Each round is two minutes long."
Once Dominic started the timer, I began punching the solid bag with some force, imagining it was Destini's boyfriend's face. The day Leo and I went to Kareem's job, and he brought up my past, it replayed in my mind, making my blood boil. Who does Kareem think he is? Does he think he can walk into the picture and take over my spot? Fuck no, because I won't allow it.
My heart pounded in my chest, and adrenaline coursed through my veins. All I could see was Kareem's face smirking at me when he brought up my past as if he knew me. The image of Destini flaunting a wedding ring on her finger that wasn't given to her by me flashed through my mind, and I lost it. Everything around me disappeared, and I unleashed everything I had inside me. Releasing a side of me I didn't know I had.
Everything around me faded away, and I found myself demolishing Kareem's face. His nose was busted and bleeding, his eyes were swollen shut, and I think he was missing a few teeth. It wasn't until I felt Dominic's hand on my shoulder that I snapped out of it.
"Hey man, calm down some, yeah?" He replied, patting my arm.
Heavily breathing, I backed away from the punching bag and walked away with my hands on my hips to catch my breath. It took between five to ten minutes to breathe. Dominic checked on me, asking if I was okay, and I nodded.
"I'm good," I assured, nodding as I returned to the punching bag.
"You sure?" He asked, staring at me.
"Yeah, man, I'm good. Let's go." I nodded, stretching my arms and shoulders.
My trainer nodded his head, and we got back to my workout. The next round I focused on was my cross punches. I mastered the textbook technique, developed speed & power, learned how to set up my crosses, punched through the targets, and turned the punches over. Overall, the entire workout was exhausting but thrilling. Every muscle in my arms burned.
Grabbing my gym bag, I found my water bottle and gulped a decent amount. I waved goodbye to Dominic and left the building to my car. I climbed into the driver's seat and started the engine. As I pulled out of the parking lot, I decided to call Destini.
Destini❤️🥀🥺 - Hello?
What are you doing?
Destini❤️🥀🥺 - Nothing. I'm watching Coco with Alayah, why?
Is it okay if I pick her up and drop her off in the morning?
Destini❤️🥀🥺 - Sure. She's been asking for you all day anyway.
Okay, I'm going home first to shower, and I'll pick her up in thirty minutes.
Destini❤️🥀🥺 - She'll be ready.
Thanks, Des.
Smiling, I hung up the phone and continued driving. Once I got home, I unlocked the door to my apartment and walked to my bathroom to shower. As I cleaned myself, I didn't hear Nazanin enter the bathroom. I jumped out of my skin when she pulled the curtain back.
"So you won't speak to me when you come in the house now?" She questioned, standing with her arms crossed.
"Oh, díos mío, Nazanin. Empieza a llamar." I gasped, looking at her. ( "Oh my god, Nazanin. Start knocking." )
"Sorry, but answer my question." My girlfriend demanded, leaning against the shower frame.
"I'm sorry. I'm late picking up Alayah, so I'm trying to hurry." I replied, turning off the water and wrapping a towel around my waist.
"You didn't tell me you were picking her up today," Nazanin said, following me to the bedroom.
Upon hearing that, I turned and looked at her confusedly. "Do I have to?"
"Well, if you're going to be around Destini, then yes." She nodded, giving me an ugly facial expression.
"Oh, my god, not this again." I groaned, rolling my eyes as I grabbed my clothes. "I'm only going to pick up Alayah and bring her back. She's spending the night."
"Well, I'm going with you anyway." She responded and walked out of the room before I could protest.
I shook my head as I got dressed. Walking to the living room, I grabbed my keys off the counter, and Nazanin followed me. We got in my car, and I drove to Destini's house. The same place I used to call home. When I arrived, I parked and looked at Nazanin.
"Look, don't start any shit, please," I begged, making her roll her eyes. "Not in front of my daughter."
"As long as she doesn't say anything to me, we're good." She replied, shaking her head.
I sighed, shaking my head as I exited the car. Walking to the front door, I rang the doorbell and waited for Destini to answer. Finally, she opened the door with Alayah, smiling at me.
"Hi, Daddy." My daughter grinned, staring at me.
"Hello, baby girl. How are you?" I smiled, kissing her cheek.
"I missed you." She replied, smiling, showing all of her teeth. "Oh, me and Mommy made chocolate chip cookies."
"Mmm, they look good. I missed you too." I laughed, kissing her cheek again. "Have you been good for mommy?"
"Always," Alayah responded, nodding at my question.
Looking at Destini, she sarcastically smiled at me, waving her hand. "Do you want her back at a certain time?"
"No, you can drop her off whenever you'd like. All you have to do is call me." The mother of my child replied, shrugging her shoulders. She adverted her attention behind me at my car. "Is that your wife?"
"Don't start, please." I groaned, rolling my eyes.
"She's the one that said it." She pettily replied, grinning at me
"Anyway, I'll see you later." I smiled, waving at her.
"Bye, mommy." My daughter grinned, hugging her mother.
"Have fun with daddy," Destini responded, kissing her forehead.
"Okay," Alayah said, running to the car.
I helped Alayah into the pink booster, buckled her in, and got in the driver's seat. After starting the engine, I drove the car and headed home. Walking into the apartment, I set my daughter on her feet and grabbed her hand.
"I have a surprise for you." I smiled, looking at Alayah.
"What is it?" She giggled, bouncing on her feet.
Smiling at her eagerness, I led her to the door that led to her bedroom. Opening it, I watched her look around, and when she realized it, her eyes lit up with excitement.
"Is this my room?" Alayah asks, beaming with happiness.
"Yes, it is. So when you come over, you have a room at Daddy's house with many toys." I nodded, answering her.
"Yay! Thank you, Daddy." My daughter smiled, hugging my neck.
"You're welcome, baby girl." I returned the gesture, hugging her.
Alayah ran inside, went under the bunk bed, and sat in the chair. She grabbed the stuffed doll and started playing with it, laughing and being a child. There was nothing more in this world I loved the most than seeing my daughter smile. Her bright smile made my heart swell. I didn't wish my life had changed without seeing her beautiful face.
Walking to the living room, I sat on the couch and turned the TV on to an NFL game. Playing ahi at each other is the Dallas Cowboys vs the Los Angeles Rams. About ten minutes later, I heard little feet approaching me and saw Alayah. She climbed on the couch and sat next to me.
"I like football." She said, looking at me.
"How do you know this is football?" I asked, nodding my head to the TV.
"I watch it with Papa. His favorite team is the Cowboys." Alayah replied, smiling at me.
"You're so smart," I responded, kissing her head.
The Rams started the game with Brett Maher kicking the ball from number 35 on Dallas to his team 20 for 23 yards, resulting in a punt. Quarterback Dak Prescott passed a short left to Jason Witten, giving the Rams a penalty. Prescott hiked the ball to Tony Pollard, and he ran to the end zone.
"TOUCHDOWN!!" Alayah screamed, jumping to her feet.
"What do you know about touchdowns?" I asked, laughing at her facial expression.
"Papa taught me. He said when a player has the ball and runs to the end, that means a touchdown." She explained, nodding as she sat back down.
"Your papa is right," I replied, pulling her into my arms.
The two of us continued watching the game until it was over, scoring with Dallas taking the win at 14 - 10.
"Daddy, I'm hungry," Alayah announced, looking at me.
"¿Qué te gustaría comer?" I asked, smiling at her beautiful face. ( "What would you like to eat?" )
"Caine's." She nodded, clapping her hands.
"Okay, I'll order it," I replied, opening the UberEats app on my phone.
I added the food to my cart and ordered it. Within five minutes, someone accepted the order and drove to pick it up. Since the restaurant was a block away, it took about fifteen minutes for the Uber driver to deliver it to the door. After retrieving the food, I gave the delivery guy an extra tip and closed the door. I sat on the couch, handed my daughter her tenders, and walked to my bedroom to give Nazanin hers because if I didn't, she'd be upset.
Opening the door, I found her sitting against the headboard, scrolling on her phone. "Thank you, but you didn't have to."
"No, it's okay. Alayah got hungry and wanted Raising Caine's." I replied, shrugging my shoulders."
"Oh, thank you." She nodded, setting her phone down.
"You're welcome," I responded, smiling at her.
Walking back to the living room, I grabbed my container and started eating my food, enjoying my time with my daughter. I know times like this I won't be able to get back, so I cherish moments like these with her to look back on the times when she was younger. As I've said before, I don't wish Destini didn't have Alayah because she is loved, and I would do anything for her. I'd drop anything I'm doing and come to her rescue, Alayah and Destini's support. I just wished that Destini and I didn't end on the terms that we did.

Black/white interracial lesbian couple on alien road trip
nathaliebjoern asked:
What concerns would A have going on a roadtrip in USA in an alien/sci-fi tourist stops type way (circa 2013)? A is Black, grew up and lives in Denmark, parents are from African-country-yet-to-be-determined (possibly Ethiopia, but I do take suggestions here), going to USA with (white) girlfriend. Example: they're worried about being two young girls on a road trip (exacerbated by being wlw) so they are taking self defence before leaving (bonus: gets convenient/relevant later when they have to fight sudden, real aliens). Is there some specific concern A would have (bonus if relevant for alien hunting or car chasing adventures)? What precautions would she take or concerns might she have? Any concerns she might discuss with gf, even if there are no precautions to take? Or just ruminate over in internal monologue, i guess, but i want them to have a healthy relationship with lots of communication lol. She's the planning, overprepared type! I want the focus to be on their Alien fighting road trip adventure and coming of age lesbianism in the background, but i want to still acknowledge any issues A might have.
"I want the focus to be on their Alien fighting road trip adventure and coming of age lesbianism in the background, but i want to still acknowledge any issues A might have."
How far the world has progressed in terms of discrimination in your alien sci-fi world is up to you. Based on your description, racism and homophobia still exists. Perhaps it just isn't as much of a problem in this setting or story. Or encounters would depend on the town so your characters avoid and don't happen upon areas that may be a problem for the couple. Either way, it is not erasure to have a story where discrimination isn't something the characters encounter. I find this to be especially true for science fiction and fantasy.
As a Black woman who likes to travel, and in an interracial relationship, I take certain precautions before I travel. One way I do this is to research the travel experiences shared from Black women and mixed couples who've been to the places that I'm considering. I also look into news stories and reports about any incidents in the area.
This could also apply if you're LGBTQIA, in an interracial relationship and so on. As your character is a planning, super prepared type, it'd make sense if they mapped out their stops to make sure they were interracial couple / Black / LGBTQIA+ friendly and avoided any places that were not.
Also, what "friendly" or safe looks like may vary. Not all travel experiences are blatant in their discrimination or othering behavior.
What general attitudes might range from: ideas
The travelers blend in. There's enough diversity and tourism where you don't get an unwelcome attitude from the townspeople.
Some stares, second-glances and curiousity, but little to no blatant hostility.
Strong "celebrity-status" othering, to the point of being touched, pictures snapped of you, asked to poise for photos if asked at all, given free gifts, etc. (Note: this can be quite uncomfortable)
Stares and standoffish behavior from locals, but no incidents of violence.
Bold-faced hostility, such as intimidating glares, recording, taunts, yelling, and possible physical encounters like spitting.
Explicit threats, violence, being warned to leave, high risks of bodily harm.
Note that this doesn't mean everyone in a place would all act this way. I've traveled where there were stares of curiosity in one city or standoffish behavior in others, but it didn't extent to everyone in those places, staff, and so on. It also didn't sum up every single encounter. I've even heard tales of the very hostile places where a person warns the traveler that they should leave to avoid trouble from others in the town, usually out of kind warning. One can travel anywhere, really, and come across hostile people, and in that same town experience kindness.
Applying these travel experiences your story
The characters just mentioning that they've done their research and will avoid these kinds of places with known negative experiences should be enough. You don't need an actual experience of discrimination to play out, if you'd rather avoid that.
If you did want to include something without including an active experience, you could bring up the matter by mentioning the history of a place. For example, they learn some info and tell their partner that "Blank, Tennessee was once a sundown town and would've been unsafe for us ninety years ago." Or they mention some historical event that happened at a certain place, possibly even visiting a historic monument or museum.
I hope this helps; your story sounds fun!

I need a new fic or book to induldge and that will give me cold nights, cuddles, angst, everything is beautiful but everything sometimes hurts, music, laying in bed as a hobby, hot chocolate, yummy food, friendship, found family, mythology, maybe a lil bit of fantasy, nana's special soup, marriage of convienence type vibes .
Then I will be happy even better if they have a trracklist that goes with each chapter ( ̄▽ ̄)/♫•*¨*•.¸¸♪

This is slightly terrifying, but … I put my first indie release fantasy romance up for pre-order on Amazon.
Tumblr media
To Lady Mirade, it seems a simple task: abduct the sorcerer son of her clan’s greatest enemy and persuade him to teach her the magic she needs to defend her family and her keep. She never expects her greatest battle to be against the forbidden desire that burns between them.
The Lord Sorcerer Lorien’s task is to escape and return to his own clan so they can resume their feud. But even as he remains Mirade’s prisoner, he finds himself enchanted by her determination and passion to protect her people.
As they grow ever closer, finding a way to resolve the feud so they can be together may prove to be the most impossible task of all.

"I know it's foolish. I just want things to be nice for him." + "The thing is, we want things to be nice for you, too."
"Did we teach you shame?"
"I want you to have it. I want to think of you with it."
*learns to cook extremely complicated and lovely meals all on his own just to feed the man he loves without credit*
Big Eden really invented love, huh. Nothing quite tops this movie for me in terms of demonstrating love of all kinds. The impeccable queer romance, the found family, the quiet acts of devotion, food as a love language, loving community... a fantastic comfort movie, if anyone's feeling down and needs some sweetness and kindness.
