#Ironwood: THAT QROW IS A KILLER!

Jaune the Strategist
Jaune: Um… General Ironwood? I have a question.
Ironwood: What is it Mr. Arc?
Jaune: Why not release the video footage of Tyrian killing a bunch of people?
Clover: Are you crazy? If we release such a video it cause panic in Mantle.
Jaune: I hear you. But... isn’t the Atlas military already being framed for countless murders?
Ironwood: Yes.
Jaune: And no one in Mantle is willing to follow protocol because they don’t trust us right?
Ironwood: Well... yes.
Jaune: Okay. So why not use this to our advantage?
Ruby: Explain.
Jaune: I mean come on. Seriously? We have proof. We have video display. And if this has been happening for a while then we have dead bodies that can hold our case.
Ironwood: Mr. Arc, I’m going to need you to further elaboration.
Jaune: What’s there to- Look, Tyrian has been killing people for a while, right?
Qrow: Yeah.
Jaune: We have video proof that he committed the massacre at Robin’s party. We could just report this and clear Penny’s name.
Ironwood: That is true.
Jaune: Plus with the few bodies Tyrian left behind, which I’m hoping your Atlas soldiers investigated completely. Like the time and location of death. As well as how they died. Basically if Tyrian left multiple victims, can’t we compare them to the other corpses from the party.
Ironwood: Huh.
Jaune: Not only that but Tyrian has a poisonous tail. Didn’t some of them have a hint poison consumed or at least small pick to their bodies.
Ironwood: Oh. That is something to consider.
Clover: Okay, but still doesn’t change the fact if we tell the people a killer is on the loose it will cause panic.
Jaune: True. But it could also make people listen. Think about it, they’re already being invaded by grimm everyday. And now they have killer amongest them. Wouldn’t that force them to reconsider they’re options?
Clover: … My… My Oum he could right.
Marrow: Okay but what about Robyn?
Jaune: Mantle’s Champion? Happy Huntresses? Are you serious? Do you honestly think she would not make a killer her top priority?
Marrow: Huh.
Jaune: I’m just saying, why are we keeping this under raps and quickly turning to Martial law?
Ironwood: Wow… anything else Mr.Arc
Jaune: Why frame Penny?
Ruby: She’s the Protector of Mantle.
Jaune: She also a robot. With a human soul. Who recorded everything! Who so far never got hacked? So why her specifically? If anything I would have got Penny out the way and framed one of the Ace-ops. Specifically Marrow. Hell why not frame Robyn herself?
Marrow: Whoa why me?
Jaune: You know why.
Blake: But tell us why.
Ironwood: Damn he’s right. That absolutely makes sense considering he’s a Faunus and recent member of the Ace ops.
Jaune: Exactly.
Blake: Are you two serious?!
Jaune: Blake think about how much conflict that would cause. A faunus in the Atlas military. An Ace operative killed and injured a bunch of innocent people. Humans and faunuses mind you. Not only would that cause division amongest the people of Mantle but the school and the soldiers.
Ironwood: He’s right. We have faunases who attend this school and are apart our units.
Jaune: It’ll be chaos. Racism and Hatred in the air. And with that much negativity the grimm attacks would be sky rocketing to the masses. Screw trying to get Amity Arena up we might as well have focused our time on containment. Hell that would been a better reason to initiate Martial law. Something I think Robyn would agree to. Considering Fiona is a faunus and her teammate.
Ironwood: So basically framing Penny was-
Jaune: A stupid idea? ABSO-FREAKEN-LUTLY!! Who ever made this plan had to be dumb as bricks.
Watts: *sneezes*
Jaune: I’m mean now I might as well ask this question. Has anyone ever disagreed with Penny’s creation?
Ironwood: I mean-… ... actually... yes we had a few people who disagreed.
Jaune: Also if you have a file for Tyrian, then what about Cinder, Emerald, Mercury or Hazel?
Ironwood: Why yes we---- Hold up. You all saw Hazel?
Jaune: Yeah.
Ironwood: And you survived?
Nora: Yes. Though with our tails between our legs. How do you know him?
Ironwood: How do you think I lost half of my body?
Jaune: Damn. And I thought Ren and Qrow had it worse. How powerful is he?
Ironwood: He crippled Ozpin.
Oscar: (And he said he stood a chance. He could’ve killed us both.)
Jaune: (We’ll most definitely need to jump him.) An-anyways, back on topic. So, who out all the other people were against the Penny project? Simply put who hates Pietro the most?
Ironwood: Well… there was Professor Watts.
Jaune: Professor Watts?
Ironwood: He was an inventor as well. He was even to soul creator of the Atlas robots you’re associated with. However he died in accident.
Jaune: How long ago?
Ironwood: Months ago?
Jaune: Okay now that’s weird.
Weiss: So what Jaune? He died.
Winter: Yes but I understand why Mr.Arc is suspicious. In Cinder’s file, after committing four first degree murders she disappeared.
Jaune: Then she suddenly appears back at Beacon with a way to hack the military.
Clover: Tyrian was captured but then escaped and he disappeared as well.
Qrow: Then he came out nowhere and tried to capture Ruby.
Ironwood: Hazel disappeared once too.
Oscar: And then I saw him on my way to Mistral.
Jaune: Is any of this making sense?
Ironwood: Yes. Clover I need you to follow up on some the victims of the previous crimes. And Winter I need you look into Watt’s case. Lets make sure he’s dead. If not we need evidence.
Winter: Yes sir.
Ironwood: Well, Mr. Arc it seem I underestimated your intelligence. I will not call in Martial law.
Jaune: No-no. Keep it in mind.
Nora: SAY WHAT?! I THOUGHT YOU WERE TRYING TO AVOID IT!!
Jaune: I am. But Robyn could still cause trouble for us down the road. We need to be ready when she could take things too far.
Nora: But-
Ironwood: It’s only if she continues to be an obstacle.
Nora: *silent*
Ironwood: Alright. Everyone back to work. Keep an eye out for Tyrian. And if you learn anything you report to me immediately.
Ace-ops: Yes sir.
Ren: Yes sir.
*JNPR Dorm Room*
Nora: Jaune, I can’t believe you sided with Ironwood.
Ren: Nora, it is a constitutions plan. It’s not going to happen.
Nora: I’m just saying the people of Mantle are already having a hard time.
Ren: I understand but-
Nora: But what? That getting Amity Arena up is more important than helping the people.
Ren: What about the world? What about all of Remnant?
Nora: How can help the world if we can’t help a country?!
Ren: We can’t always focus on the small things Nora. We need to consider the bigger picture.
Nora: So after all we’ve been through before you want to throw that away?
Ren That not what I’m saying. I-
Jaune: ENOUGH!!
Jaune: Please. Stop arguing.
Ren: Jaune, look I want to say-
Jaune: Stop. Sit. Both of you.
Nara and Ren: *sit separately from each other*
Jaune: Look, Nora, I understand. I know Mantle going through hard times. Due to the trading routes and transportation being limited, people are starting to struggle to get in and out of city. Stores and companies are closed so people are having trouble finding work. And without work, they can’t make money. And without money they can’t pay rent nor provide for their families. Basically majority of those people might as well not have homes soon.
Nora: Then you know why Martial law can’t happen. It will make things worse.
Jaune: Yes. That is why I would rather keep it as a last resort. However, with Mantle’s lack of funding and resources, I almost can’t blame Robyn for what’s she’s doing. However, two wrongs don’t make a right.
Nora: Hmm.
Ren: Well said Jaune.
Jaune: And you. Don’t think I’m openly siding with Ironwood. I only did that because I need everyone on the same page.
Ren: Jaune.
Jaune: At Beacon, Amber, Ozpin and Pyrrha died. Then the world got divide. Mistral, we almost died.
Nora: We survived.
Jaune: Through the skin of our teeth Nora! We got lucky! And Hazel, Emerald and Mercury stilled escaped!
Nora: *hates when he’s right*
Jaune: Now Tyrian is here. And even if my theory on Watts is correct, we still don’t know what they’re up to. Not to mention, we’re keeping secrets too. Especially, about Salem., who may have sent them here to retrieve the lamp. And worse, kill Oscar.
Nora and Ren: … … …
Jaune: Look… … Basically what I’m saying we need to be careful. We are no longer students. We are hunters. Every move we make could jeopardize what we are trying to accomplish. Even the people we trust could be a problem if we’re not careful.
Nora: So you don’t trust Ruby?
Jaune: Yeah. But keeping these secrets could get us in trouble, or most likely, have a gun to our heads. And Ironwood has plenty of them compared to us.
Ren: So what should we do?
Jaune: We do what we started this journey for. We search for answers.

This has got to be one of the most frustrating screenshots in RWBY.
Tumblr media
Fans can deny it as much as they like that Qrow was not responsible for Clover's death but this screenshot proves that he did. Tyrian may have struck Clover through the heart, but Qrow was the one who allowed it to happen by fighting him and whittling his Aura levels down to dangerous levels before breaking it. AND there was literally no reason for Qrow to strike him, Clover had Tyrian restrained, the literal serial killer was ready to be taken back into custody and instead of stopping the fight and surrendering...he decides the best course of action is to attack the man restraining the serial killer. Okay. The worst part is Clover's death changes nothing, whether he lives or dies doesn't change the fact that Qrow still gets arrested and taken to James.
The concept of responsibility in the canon is so hopelessly skewed. Personally, I consider characters at least partially responsible for an outcome if their action meets three criteria:
Did this action directly allow for the outcome to occur, even if it wasn't the final step? e.g. Qrow breaking Clover's aura = Clover is now vulnerable to death via Tyrian. No punch = new outcome (Clover not dying then)
Did the character have agency in this moment? i.e. they're not mind controlled, not threatened into taking an action they otherwise wouldn't consider, not manipulated or lead astray by false information, etc.
Was the character aware that this action could lead to a horrific outcome? Are they reliably informed of the risks? e.g. Qrow ABSOLUTELY understands the dangers of breaking someone's aura, in the middle of the tundra, while a long-established serial killer is attempting to murder them
Now, note that when I say "responsible" I mean in the sense of, "You should be held accountable for this" rather than the equally literal and ethically simpler, "You just did the thing." I'm just plain old responsible if I knock a vase over like, "Yeah, regardless of this being a total accident I am the one who knocked it over. No one else did that. I'm the responsible party, but in a chill, very forgivable way." I'm accountable-responsible if I willingly throw a ball across the room, knowing full well it might hit something, but not really giving a shit for stupid, OOC reasons.
The show tries to play Qrow's choice off as just generic-responsible (when it's not irrationally blaming Ironwood), but he's accountable-responsible. He made a choice of his own free will, understanding better than most (as a huntsman and someone who has faced Tyrian before) the danger that choice presented to his friend, and that choice directly provided the means of Clover's death. Qrow didn't murder Clover, but he sure as hell was an accomplice.
And RWBY is full of these moments that, like with Qrow, the story ignores or forgives a character because the action in question is taken by one of the heroes. The above criteria is why I hold Ruby largely responsible for them ending up in the Ever After (you made a series of informed demands that directly lead to this outcome), or why I hold Jaune responsible for Penny's death (you made the choice to end her life without persuasive evidence that she couldn't be saved), even though both obviously have villains taking that final step: Salem is the one actually attacking Remnant, Cinder is the one who stabs Penny. Yet neither character has to grapple with their choices; the story glosses over them by introducing a new emotional focus that makes us feel for the character instead, not their victim(s): Ruby doesn't have to own up to her actions as leader because she jumps straight to crying over how hard it is to be leader; Jaune doesn't have to own up to Penny's death because he jumps straight to being traumatized by a lifetime of Ever After isolation. As a side-note, this is very similar to one of my biggest issues with Bakugo from MHA: too often the story has him engage in horrific behavior, immediately introduces something Bad in his life - he's kidnapped, injured, upset that All Might doesn't love him best - and saving/comforting him becomes the new focus, bypassing accountability. Or, fans read the Bad Thing as divine punishment for previous actions... despite there being no connection between the two and thus no growth. Meanwhile, in parallel world, Ruby helps doom Remnant but it's fine because she's upset about something and all the story cares about is showing Any Emotional Reaction, not one that will demonstrate that the character a) understands how their actions lead to this outcome, b) understands why that's an issue, and c) strives to change their behavior in the future.
RWBY also plays the Dramatic Emotional Card. Like, you know that person who when you correct them about something they become SO over-the-top upset about their mistake that you wind up comforting them rather than allowing them to sit with the correction? Yeah. There's no space to let Qrow sit with his responsibility because the show is too busy having him rail against Ironwood, or stare his Super Depressed stare at Clover's badge. The cue to the audience is, "He's so upset! Feel for him!!" not "Damn, he fucked up... how's he gonna grow from this?"
Then to round things off the responsible hero is always narratively forgiven. Qrow stops the bomb with an unprecedented spout of good luck: Clover from beyond the grave helping him in his time of need (not literally most likely, but in a thematic sense). Ruby returns to a world with her image painted in alleyways as a martyr: Remnant overlooking all the ways she helped cause their predicament and, again, positioning her solely as the injured party, rather than a victim and a perpetrator (which, frankly, makes Ruby more boring!). You're not supposed to hold them responsible, but if you do don't worry, here's a "hopeful" scene that explicitly says blaming them is a mistake.

Something else about Semblances I find interesting:
Qrow Branwen's Semblance manifests in ways that bring misfortune to the people around him, but basically always works out to his advantage. As such, he came to believe his Semblance was a Bad Luck Charm, blaming himself for every horrible thing that happens to the people around him.
Clover Ebi's Semblance brings him good fortune, sometimes at the expense of the people around him. But he instead let himself get careless, because his Semblance would basically ensure that every roll of the dice would be in his favor. So he thinks his Semblance is a Good Luck Charm that will always make the odds turn up in his favor.
They both have the same basic superpower, but interpreted it in WILDLY different ways due to Qrow growing up in an abusive environment (where his Semblance would've hurt his abusers enough for them to drill it into his skull that he's nothing but trouble) while Clover grew up in a position of privilege (where his Semblance would mostly just hurt people he views as beneath him in his climb to the top).
This ultimately gets Clover KILLED when he puts himself in a situation where luck can't save him (ordered to arrest Qrow by Ironwood, ignoring the escaped serial killer to focus on that order, and also threatening to deny an unconscious ally medical care if Qrow doesn't surrender, resulting in Qrow being FORCED to accept the serial killer's offer of an alliance if he wants to survive), whereas Qrow ends up discovering his Semblance isn't a curse when his Semblance saves the day (stopping an armed nuke from falling out of an aircraft a spiteful police officer had hijacked as part of the world's second deadliest temper tantrum).
First off, love the phrase "The world's second deadliest temper tantrum"
Secondly, I actually fucking adore this because just fuckin. Yeah the. The entire thing of same power different perspective.

So, the misogynistic manbaby who runs /r/RWBYcritics wrote another screed whining about "not offer[ing] character progression for Ruby", and it really drives home how shitty misogynist RWBY "critics" fundamentally refuse to accept Ruby Rose's character development in the series.
In so many edgy stories, a character like Ruby—and especially a female character like Ruby—is presented as naive and foolish, and has their optimism and resolve ground down through victimization and failure. In the end, their "growth" is about accepting the "reality" of the world, or becoming a cynical bastard like the creators of such stories.
From her introduction, Ruby is established as a character who refuses to stand by and let evil do as they please—a determined and courageous girl who faces danger and protects others without fear, longing to be the fairy-tale-esque heroine, while knowing life isn't always like a fairy tale. Ruby's character arc throughout the series has been about facing the immense pressure, burdens, and tragedies that fall upon her for following this path.
Her character "development", and the reason why fans of the show adore her character, is about Ruby has refusing to compromise on her ideals and courage, despite all of the challenges and struggles she has faced. She hasn't decided that hurting innocent people or sacrificing them is the "right" way to achieve their goals. She still throws herself into harm's way to protect the innocent, to fight evil, to do what's truly right.
The show's "critics" desperately wanted Volume 9 to be a volume all about Ruby realizing that she is Wrong, that her way of thinking is Wrong, that all of her actions and beliefs are Wrong. And why is that? Because a plan of hers to save the peoples of two cities didn't go perfectly right, because of factors completely out of her own control. She still succeeded in saving almost everyone from those two cities, mind you, but everything didn't go flawlessly and thus this is treated as an absolute, outright moral failing of her as a person.
And why is this?
Well, it's because of everything else these people complain about Ruby doing. They complain about her not adopting Roman Torchwick's ideals, even after those ideals got him killed. They complain about her trying to help her uncle fight off a serial killer, when her uncle never told her the reason why he didn't want her to help. They complain about her questioning Ozpin and his past, and about Ruby defying Qrow when they plan to steal an airship. They complain about Ruby daring to not be unquestioningly loyal to Ironwood and every thing he says and does.
RWBY "critics" hate Ruby and her arc throughout the series is that she remains a confident, courageous woman who doesn't compromise her beliefs or resolve based on what men think she should believe in.
Volume 9's story is important not just for Ruby herself but in the message it carries. Failure does not mean one is utterly worthless as a person, that all of one's beliefs and ideals should be forsaken. And even in failure, there can be success. You may have been defeated on one side, but your other goals may have succeeded. Ruby learns that she doesn't need to abandon who she is in order to handle the burden she's taken on; that being Ruby Rose is enough; that being Ruby Rose means all the world to the people who care about her and the people she's fought to save.
But of course, that's not enough for people who've never wanted Ruby Rose or anyone but gruff, cynical men to be the real heroes of the story, with Ruby simply following their orders and example.

"Keep Moving Forward" is The Main Difference Between RWBY's Heroes and Villains
We all can probably tell that the spirit of determination is something of a theme in RWBY. However, something that I don't see brought up as often is how the show's taken that and basically built every character around it to at least some degree. Put simply, in RWBY heroes are those that push towards tomorrow and villains are those who are stuck in the past. (With a handful of very notable exceptions which I'll get into later.)
Heroes in RWBY are typically people that have something that they're either working towards or working away from, sometimes both. Regardless, they make a point of not being bogged down by what's happened to them in the past and moving on from it. Ruby has Summer, Yang has Raven, Blake has Adam and the White Fang, Weiss has her father and the SDC, and Nora and Ren have Kuroyuri. All of these characters' arcs involve them dealing with these important pillars of their pasts and moving past them. They use them to mold and change and better themselves. Jaune and Pyrrha are interesting to note here because they don't fit this pattern exactly but still fit the theming.
Pyrrha has worked her whole life towards becoming a huntress. She's much like Ruby in that regard. She enjoys what she does and while her discomfort with her celebrity status is an emotional hang-up for her it isn't really the focus of her arc. Instead, it's about how her future is torn away from her. First metaphorically by the responsibility of being a maiden, and then literally by an arrow to the chest. Jaune meanwhile looks like his story would be about his desire to live up to the standards set by his ancestors. And it is at the beginning. But it becomes apparent that the real meat of Jaune's character arc comes from working past Pyrrha's death and his response to that.
The villains on the other hand are basically all defined by their inability to move on from the past. Adam, Hazel, Salem, Mercury, Cinder, Watts, all of them are inflicting harm on others because of vendettas, grudges, and worldviews based in things that happened to them a long time ago. Salem refused to move on from Ozma's death and now is refusing to move on from his betrayal. Hazel's semblance is literally symbolic of his inability to process his grief. Watts is only with Salem to get back at Ironwood for disgracing him. Mercury believes that he is a killer and always will be and is too afraid to try and change that path. Cinder holds on to the belief that freedom is equivalent to power and has made her whole life in pursuit of that. And Adam is lashing out at anyone he can reach to try and make himself feel like his life matters and is something he is in control of.
This is also why villains like Emerald and Ilia are ultimately able to switch sides. Both of them have a future for themselves that they were envisioning. But it eventually became apparent to them that the people they were following were not going to fulfill that for them and especially not in the ways they wanted.
And now we come to the exceptions which is where things get really interesting.
First off is Tyrian who is, remarkably, seemingly free from any shackles of the past. He genuinely believes in the future of destruction Salem will bring and is just having fun on the ride there. All the other villains have some other agenda besides him. He's not hiding anything which makes him quick to catch on to just how delusional the other bad guys are. (Namely Cinder, Emerald and Mercury)
Secondly, Ozpin and Qrow. I'm lumping these two together as they're somewhat similar on this topic in particular. Both Oz and Qrow are by all rights good guys. They never plunge into villainy, but they also are very much shackled by the past in the same way most of the villains are. What separates them is that they do eventually come to understand these faults to at least some extent and start to work past them just like the main characters do. It just takes them a little longer.
And lastly the most noteworthy exception in my opinion: Ironwood, who descends into villainy but in my opinion never really latches on to the past in the way the other villains do. Ironwood takes the theme of determination to its logical extreme and becomes a person who will literally stop for no one. He pursues his view of the future to the expense of all other things until he's left broken. It is honestly a dark mirror to how Ruby operates but that is something I want to make its own post.

Hello! I've been wondering for a while but, considering you also thought of James = GoL, has the Salem = Qrow thought crossed your mind? With Clover as Ozma. There's been several times they have been paralleled (example: fight vs Clover = vs Ozma, plus they have the same colors) & I'm quite sure that Qrow will be the one to help the kids out and also bring back Clover. Mister "Gone. Live everybody else." has been forgotten by Cinder & everyone else and that's going to be important in the end
ok so. gotta be honest i don’t really. have much interesting to say about clover because he’s… not my cup of tea and i don’t find him particularly engaging in his own right, although the stuff the narrative does with him as the like embodiment of the atlesian military ideal is very fun and he’s a neatfoil to qrow. and now that i’ve said that yeah i can see where you’re getting the ozma repetition from, in that clover is the true believer even to his own detriment and faultlessly obedient until it kills him.
where it gets sticky imo is that ozlem is a broken fairytale and the symbolic repetitions thereof function narratively as attempts to get it right this time; that’s how we get the validation of salem’s grieving rage through ruby at the summit of beacon tower and jaune being dragged bodily out of the self-destructive spiral of his grief by his friends, and so forth. my reading of the atlas arc turns on penny being the fulcrum, the echo of ozma to ironwood’s echo of the god of light, and specifically an illustration of the divine mandate’s cruel injustice; penny is similarly torn between goodness and what she’s been told is right, between duty and desire, and very much like ozma she is ultimately crushed by the duty she can’t bring herself to walk away from—but her arc in v7-8 is all about questioning the assumptions she has been taught to make, vocalizing her internal conflicts, and being resolutely supported by her loved ones as she breaks away from ironwood.
(there are other layers to pick apart here in her death by cinder’s hand […pun intended i am so sorry] and jaune’s unwilling participation in ending her life in order to deny cinder what she wants from this murder, but in the interest of not going off on too long a tangent—)
anyway as the ozlem repetitions angle pertains to qrow and clover, i read them more as abstracted embodiments of the divine conflict: here is a mirror. good fortune on one side of the glass and misfortune on the other. (except they’re the same, because whether luck is good for you or bad for someone else depends solely on how you look at it.) good fortune bolsters misfortune as long as they’re on the same side but is also so disconnected from anything beyond the scope of the rules, the correct order of things that he chooses to attack misfortune, his friend and until minutes ago his ally, above recapturing the sadistic serial killer actively trying to kill them both—and his rigidity and refusal to listen to reason leaves misfortune with no recourse but to side with the serial killer. and when this predictably ends in tragedy it’s portrayed genuinely as a tragedy—not good fortune getting what’s coming to him, but a tragic, pointless ending to a life worth indescribably more than the inhumane rules he sacrificed it for. the anger qrow briefly expresses towards him is hollow, grieving, not really a condemnation of clover himself but a bitter repudiation of the world that made him.
it’s all very *waves hands* on theme, but in a direction that strikes me as pointing more at the gods (whose fundamental problem is the arbitrary and inequitable dichotomy they’ve forced themselves into and the inflexible order the “good” one enforced, to everyone’s detriment including his own) than at ozlem; consider how clover’s earnest if subtly condescending initial support of qrow and its corruption into calmly enforcing order by any means necessary suggests the way the god of light addresses his brother. there’s, again, some layers to pick apart in qrow and clover both also being staunchly loyal to causes to which they are literally (clover) or figuratively (qrow) subordinate, but that’s true of the repetition of divine conflict played out between ironwood and watts, too, and at the end of the day coercion and self-sacrifice are so crucial to what’s going on with ozma that i don’t think you can have a symbolic repetition of him without those elements; merely being subordinate to a higher power of any description is not enough, imo.
what does interest me quite a bit about this angle on qrow—and robyn, who in this layer of the narrative embodies dark’s second gift of knowledge—is that both of them survive the fall of atlas and do not leave solitas, which if it proves symbolically meaningful at all is an intriguing thing to do with a metaphor for what happens if ozma fulfills his mandate. creation (ironwood) and choice (cinder) destroyed atlas, destruction (qrow) and knowledge (robyn) are left behind to pick up the pieces… plus whatever pietro and maria will be up to, and cinder and salem in the event that they don’t leave right away. the natural point of convergence for all these characters is amity, which is a) still falling, b) something salem is lightly implied to have been interested in hijacking and using herself, and c) something salem would probably be able to haul back into broadcast range if she cared to—and of course notionally the point of amity was to bring the world together again. so THAT’s all hamster wheeling in the back of my brain.

I'd consider Blake's behavior vis-a-vis Yang in V7 more 'optimistic but cautious' than 'submissive', but fully agreed on some sort of discussion with words and stuff now that the plot might not be dragging them along at a Houndy-lugging-Ren breakneck pace. Also, solid point about the baked-in survival fawning reflexes Blake's struggling to set aside. Also also yes Yang neeeeedsss life outside Ruby & vice versa.
I evidently did not make this clear enough in the original post because a few people have mentioned this now, so that's my fault entirely for poor wording, but I wasn't claiming Blake acts submissively, I was specifically referring to the way Bumbleby detractors describe her behavior and insist that Rooster Teeth can't write a queer relationship without making one of the people in it "the man" and one of them "the woman". Like, I have gripes aplenty of my own with the writing, I think I've made that clear at this point, but some people really do seem determined to interpret every choice anyone who's worked on this show has ever made in the worst light possible.
I definitely think Blake is insecure about her current relationship with Yang and is falling back on unhealthy patterns because she hasn't had the time to learn healthy ones (and I don't blame her for it! You don't just... get over abuse in a day!), but I do also agree that she's a lot more optimistic about this one than the last one. There's hope for her going forward, she just needs time, experience, love (not just from Yang!), and support.
The Bees needing to talk their issues out (starting, but not anywhere near ending, with the fact that they fucking killed a dude!) is one of the many reasons I wish we'd gotten 2 Volumes in Atlas before Salem arrived. While I think Yang and Blake were absolutely in the right in shuffling Adam's edgelord ass off of this mortal coil, killing someone is still a major event. It still carries a lot of trauma, and we don't really see either of them work that out outside of a brief conversation in Volume 7.
Speaking of that conversation, something I find really interesting about it is that Yang is noticeably less bothered about killing Adam than Blake is. Now, I'm sure part of this is because of Yang's horribly unhealthy habit of repressing and internalizing her own emotions because she thinks someone else needs her, but I think part of it is that she's also... just genuinely less affected by killing another person than Blake is. It fits with what we know about her family, at any rate: we've seen Ruby's killer instinct time and again throughout the series (absolutely based choice by CRWBY to make her willing to go for the throat), Raven Branwen canonically personally murdered at least one person and is responsible for the deaths of many more, and Qrow is Ozpin's primary agent, his best weapon against Salem's inner circle at the start of the series, so I wouldn't be surprised to learn he's done a little wetwork of his own. He's certainly not conflicted about attempting to kill either Tyrian or Ironwood, at any rate. I think it would be a really cool choice for someone as warm and compassionate and loving as Yang to share that killer instinct, that mama bear willingness to put a motherfucker in the dirt if given a reason.
I really hope we get a conversation in Volume 9 where Yang finally opens up to Blake about how much it hurt her when Blake left. I hope Blake opens up about the way she blamed herself for everything, because that's what Adam taught her she should do. I hope they finally, finally, stop papering over the cracks and build a truly strong and healthy foundation for their relationship based on mutual communication and understanding.
I love these two so much, and I just.... want them to be okay. I want them to be happy and safe and loved and not constantly cut and torn by their own traumas and crushed by the weight of the world. I want them to be vulnerable with each other. I want them to talk.

I am curious about the timeline: since this around the end of volume 3: when would a canon timeline change for everyone?
Would this change certain viewpoints during vol 7?
Would volume 6 be team CRDL coming to help (or stop) rwby because of the Argus incident.
So, canon timeline changes around Volume 7, specifically, Chapter 3. They don't know everything that's going on, at least not yet. After all, Ironwood was trying to keep the secret of the Amity Colosseum to as small of a group as possible. Even though Cardin, Sky, Russel, and Dove are well liked, they're kept in the dark. Of course, they had their theories, with some of the ones Russel and Lark came up with closer to the mark than others. The boys think Robyn is full of it, they don't like Jacques on principle, and having lived here for a while, they aren't fond of the current council members.
Once RWBY and crew arrive, eventually they'll meet up, with some awkward interactions between Cardin and Jaune (apologies are always awkward). They'll even work together on some guardind missions, although CRDL is still kept mostly in the dark.
However, once CRDL figure out that RWBY is hiding something, Cardin will confront Ruby on this and have a pretty serious argument. This is when Qrow will act like an actual uncle and advise Ruby to fess up. This is where things differ from canon tremendously. Ironwood gets told the truth in Chapter 5, when he was giving their licenses. She'll politely decline and insist to earn hers the hard way, and in a show of solidarity, the rest of Team RWBY and ORNJ will do the same.
((all of them will also apologize to Oscar and Ozpin, but that's another thing.))
This will be the point where CRDL is clued in on the details. A lot of things happen a bit differently from here. Politics will get messy, Wattscand Tyrian will do their thing, Jacques will be an actually competent political threat, Penny will still be blamed, Robyn isn't helping. But instead of everyone acting like idiots in the finale, they'll manage to stay mostly together. Until the revelation that Salem is on their doorstep and the trolley problem of Atlas and Relics vs risking everything to save everyone will occur. Problem is, Watts' virus is still messing with the Atlas systems. Couple that with the fact Penny overloaded her circuits when she took on the Winter Maiden Powers, and is currently not functioning. She's not dead yet, but without her, they can't open the Vault. So, everyone breaks off into three main groups. One of the groups tries to find Neo and the stolen Lamp, one of them tries to get Amity up and running, and another goes down to Mantle to begin evacuation. Pietro is working to restore Penny, and it's a race against the clock. If Penny isn't back online before Salem attacks, it's over. From Team CRDL, Dove and Lark will join the Amity team while Russel and Cardin will assist with evacuation. In Amity, the problem will be a sneak attack from Cinder and Emerald, while down on Mantle, Salem is beginning her ground assault, with an aerial force attacking Atlas.
Tyrian still manages to escape custody, but instead of the dumb fight we had, Qrow and Clover do the smart thing and try to stop the serial killer. Tyrian kills Clover, leaves Robyn wounded, and escapes. Once Clover and Robyn are dropped off in an infirm, Qrow heads off, with the intention of stopping Tyrian once and for all.
That was a lore dump. I am sorry for that.

Yeah... Marrow is the least controversial of the Ace Ops on account of being the only one to turn against Ironwood when it had become clear that he was more concerned with "winning" than saving Atlas.
But a lot of people (myself included) feel that the Ace Ops' sudden last-second redemption in the final episodes of the Volume (Harriet's especially) came out of nowhere. Like, Harriet especially felt to be in poor taste to me, given the whole "cops can get away with murder as long as they have the right friends" thing in the real world, thus making Harriet being able to get away with trying to nuke a city by accepting friendship with the other Ace Ops more INSULTING than inspiring.
(Seriously, they should've either had her sacrifice herself to fly the Nuke away from Mantle or just had Watts remotely hijack the nuke instead of having Harriet attempt genocide out of spite, and most of the issues with her arc would be resolved. Like this wouldn't have resolved any of the issues with the Ace Ops bodyshaming and dehumanizing Penny and then never having to confront their biases because they turned Penny human and then immediately killed her off, but at least Harriet wouldn't be getting off scott free for a literal war crime because she shed some crocodile tears.)
I really feel like the Ace-Op's are my only real criticism of the story so far just because they've done too much that's just irredeemable and the show never spent enough time really talking about how fucked up it was that they were willing to just kill a bunch of innocent civilians for seemingly no reason, because at that point there really WAS no reason to murk Mantle. Salem had already arrived, she was already at their doorstep, and the people of Mantle were evacuating without his help. If Ironwood really didn't care to save mantle, why waste a bomb trying to get rid of it? Really just to spite them. He wasn't thinking clearly at all and seemed to think for some stupid reason that killing everyone in Mantle would make RWBY work with him, when I can just see that making them even more upset with him.
And I don't really like what they did with Clover just because he's such a new character not just to us, but to Qrow as well. I think it'd have been better if Clover was different from the other Ace-ops like maybe he was from Beacon like Qrow and that could give them some kind of connection, and make us think Clover would've been different from the rest of them. As it stands though, their whole confrontation just seems to be too stupid and silly. Because Clover dies so early, we don't really see him do anything that makes us think he's a good person.
In fact, after he dies his teammates prove to just be even worse then what we imagined. Every time they were like "Noooo Clover was better then all of us :(" I kept thinking Was he? Lol he tried to arrest Qrow for no real reason, and got himself killed by a serial killer. Sure Qrow blames himself for working alongside Tyrian in that moment, but knowing what we know now about the Ace-ops and how they were willing to legitimately genocide all of Mantle to fuel Ironwoods ego and fear........maybe getting rid of Clover was good luck on Qrow's part, but he is too lovey dovey and sad to understand that right now.

Ok, I need to wonder something: What the hell where Qrow and Clover thinking!?
I'm sorry, but in retrospect, I think Clover and Qrow where given the idiot ball in that scene. I get it: Show that Clover is so duty and loyalty bound to Ironwood that he would even arrest Qrow, but what he did is so dumb. Qrow isn't better for that fact he teamed up with Tyrian to fight Clover. Tyrian, ya know, the serial killer cultist! If they really wanted to kill off Clover that bad, just have him put aside his duty just for a moment to team up with Qrow to take down Tyrian. They fight him, think he's down, they fight and get to talking, Scorpion man stops playing dead, attacks Qrow, but Clover takes the hit. Boom! Why didn't they do that!? Like holy shit, I think even Robyn would have been telling those two to knock it off. Hell! I think that's why she was knocked out! Because Robyn would have called them out on such a stupid thing! Anyone have any thought? Anything I'm not getting? Because this is honestly something that's bothers me in hindsight about that scene.

// Also, remembering this is an RP blog, lol:
I also thrive in knowing qrow has been BOTH good and bad decisions. He is an example of the original failed team STRQ, having chosen isolation and stagnancy though nostalgia and spying and drinking and following Ozpin half-blindly.
Then the narrative subverted both his toxic masculinity and killing-off-the-mentor trope, saying “we’re not done with you yet, are you going to finally let go and make yourself into something new?” “Are you going to follow your own advice of ‘keep moving forward?’” and he did. And that still got tested through Vol 7 and 8, and he continued to chose listening to those around him, growth, kindness, and mercy. And he’s better for it.
I know we all want(ed) that big show downs between Qrow and Ironwood, but it was never gonna happen. His sub-arc subversion is “We went to Beacon to learn how to kill huntsman, but I don’t really want to be a killer.”
And if we do get another face-off with Tyrian, it better be another example of how working together with his peers wins the day to counter his isolation. I’m torn between “we already had that example to demonstrate the teamwork vs isolation and how it was competent teamwork vs young RNJR trying to back him up, so why would they do it again” vs “why not include another trilogy round reprise to show more growth, for a final conclusion to wrap up the other two instead of giving it to someone else?”
Anyway he still lives rent free in my brain and eagerly anticipate his response to his latest testing, and hope he continues to choose growth, because he’s been through so much, I so desperately want him to come through on the other side of the story having earned some peace, and think that’s where it’s going.

A low effort shit post about Adam Taurus by me enjoy:
Adam walks into a room.
(Illia)
There! Right There!
Look at that tan, that tinted skin
Look at the killer shape he's in
Look at that slightly stubly chin
Oh Please he's gay, totally gay
(Cardin)
I'm not about to celebrate
Every trait could indicate the totally straight expotriate.
This guy's not gay, I say not gay
(All)
That is the elephant in the room
Well, is it relevant to assume
that a man who wears perfume
is automatically matically fay?
(Ren)
But look at his coiffed and crispy locks
(Illia)
Look at his silk translucent socks
(Cardin)
There's the eternal paradox
Look what we're seeing
(Illia)
What are we seeing?
(Cardin)
Is he gay?
(Illia)
Of course he's gay
(Cardin)
Or Atlesian?(Adam is canonical born and raised in the Kindom of Atlas)
(All)
ohhhhhh
Gay or Atlesian?
It's hard to guarantee
Is he gay or Atlesian?
(Jaune)
Well, hey don't look at me
(Coco)
You see they bring their boys up different
in those charming foreign ports
They play peculiar sports
(All)
In shiny shirts and tiny shorts
Gay or foreign fella?
The answer could take weeks
They will say things like "ciao bella"
while they kiss you on both cheeks
(Glynda)
Oh please
(All)
Gay or Atlesian?
So many shades of gray
(Jaune)
Depending on the time of day
In Mentle go either way
(All)
Is he gay or Atlesian?
or-
(Winter)
There! Right There!
Look at that condescending smirk
Seen it on every guy at work
That is a metro-hetro jerk
That guy's not gay, I say no way
(All)
That is the elephant in the room
Well is it relevant to presume
that a hottie in that costume
(Glynda)
Is automatically, radically
(Ironwood)
Ironically, cronically
(Coco)
Scurtinly, curtainly
(Jaune)
Genetically, netically
(All)
Gay!
Officially Gay!
Officially Gay, Gay, Gay, Gay!
Dammit
Gay or Atlesian?
(Cardin)
So stylish and relaxed
(All)
Is he gay or Atlesian?
(Cardin)
I think his chest is waxed
(Coco)
But they bring their boys up different there
It's culturally diverse
It's not a fashion curse
(All)
If he wears a kilt or bears a purse
Gay or just exotic?
I still can't crack the code
(Qrow)
Yet his accent is hypnotic
but his shoes are pointy toed
(All)
Huh
Gay or Atlesian?
So many shades of gray
(Weiss)
But if he turns out straight
I'm free at 8 on saturday
(All)
Is he gay or Atlesian?
Gay or Atlesian?
Gay or Atle-
(Clover)
Wait a minute!
Give me a chance to crack this guy
I have an idea I'd like to try
(Cardin)
The floor is yours
(Clover)
So Mr. Taurus...
This alleged affair with Ms. Belladona
has been going on for...?
(Adam)
2 years
(Clover)
And your first name again is...?
(Adam)
Adam
(Clover)
And your boyfriend's name is...?
(Adam)
Banesaw
I'm sorry! I misunderstand
You say boyfriend
I thought you say best friend
Banesaw is my best friend
(Banesaw)
You bastard!
You lying bastard!
That's it
I no cover for you, no more!
Peoples
I have a big announcement
This man is gay and Atlesian!
And neither is disgrace
you've got to stop your being
a completely closet case
No matter what he say
I sware he never ever ever swing the other way
You are so gay
You big parfait!
You flaming boy in cabaret
(Adam)
I'm straight!
(Banesaw)
You were not yesterday
So if I may, I'm proud to say
He's gay!
(All)
And Atlassian!
(Banesaw)
He's gay!
(All)
And Atlassian!
(Banesaw)
He's gay!
(All)
And Atlassian and Gay!
(Adam)
Fine okay I'm gay!
(All)
Hooray!
(Banesaw and Adam)
Fine. Okay. We're gay!

Qrow Branwen
Tumblr media
Ah, Qrow, how you vex me. Why are you so popular? I just don't get you.
Here's why.
Everyone but me is wrong about them <3
Everyone seems to love him, and I just... I don't understand. He started off as a complete jackass, antagonising Winter and Ironwood for no apparent reason, being a right bastard to Pyrrha; the only people he wasn't just atrocious to were Ruby and Ozpin, and halfway Glynda. Then he becomes 10% less bastard but 75% more drunk, which is just... astonishing that this is supposed to be the awesome hunter.
Then, for like one season, he's halfway decent, but still only passable — he's like Jaune level of meh — before deciding that it's now time to blame the one person in the world (Ironwood) who's actually trying to do something to improve the clusterfuck they're in for his new friend Clover's death, when Clover was Ironwood's friend too and Qrow teamed up with Tyrian on a goddamn whim to fight Clover rather than just let himself be arrested and explain things to Ironwood, who was also his friend! I just... I can't even with this guy.
If they were real I would be afraid of them
Did I mention how he teamed up with a serial killer to murder his friend? I did? Well, that. Also the bad luck charm thing, and a drunken bastard swinging around a giant sword-scythe-thing is the last thing I want near me.
Nothing I like about them is technically canon
Some people write Qrow to be an actually decent person with genuine redeeming qualities. Wouldn't you know it, I like that Qrow! He just bears very little resemblance to show!Qrow.
They got too much screen time
There was a time and a place for Qrow, and that was v3 at the top of the clock tower. This is the person who should've died to activate Ruby's deus ex machina sooper speshul lazor eyez. Deep emotional connection to her? Check. Established as a powerful fighter? Check. Plausibly could be there? One of Ozpin's lackeys, so check. Doesn't have arcs in the middle of development? Check. Connection to other characters? Check, he's also Yang's uncle.
It's the perfect setup. They could've even kept the 'incorporate pieces of weapon' thing, except with Ruby instead of Jaune. I mean, how cool would it have been for Ruby to have put pieces of Harbinger into Crescent Rose, and from then on it could turn into sword mode, or have alternate fire of shotguns for close range, or whatever?
Why was this character in the work at all
Past v3; see above.

on the aceops defeat
The Ace Ops' defeat at the hands of RWBY and Qrow seems out of place since they are obviously better fighters, but is in a fact a beautiful representation of an Aesop. An Aesop is a story that warns us of a moral that is important to follow; even the best can fall if they aren’t careful. The Ace Ops did themselves in by ignoring the very lessons they represented, while Team RWBY succeed by heeding those same lessons:
Harriet is based on the titular hare from “The Tortoise and the Hare”, an Aesop about how overconfidence will cause you to fall behind and ultimately fail. Harriet’s pride in her skills riles up her competitive nature when Ruby provokes her at the start of the fight by insulting her, and she refuses to listen to the latter’s pleas due to said pride. Harriet's ego causes her to focus on fighting Ruby exclusively, the girl who innocently compared the speed of her Semblance to Harriet's all of once, ignoring her team in the other room and not supporting them at all; as established in previous encounters, her role in the Ace Ops is to plug gaps in their defence and give them openings through rapid attacks, and her absence leaves them vulnerable. As Harriet becomes more impatient and angry, she becomes sloppier (missing attack openings, letting Ruby escape her grip). Finally, when she becomes hyper-focused on taking down Ruby, she fails to notice Weiss who creates a thick wall of ice for Harriet to run into at full force, knocking her out. Ruby is fully aware she might fail in this fight, but in spite of her obvious fear of fighting the more experienced Huntress, she stays focused and rolls with the punches until Harriet goes down.
Elm and Vine are based on “The Elm and the Vine”, a story about the importance of cooperation in marriage/partnership. During the fight, Elm lets her anger get the best of her, openly declares she's aiming to kill, and ignores Vine’s attempts to only subdue their opponents. Likewise, Vine refuses to go along with Elm’s desire to use lethal force that's contrary to their orders. This destroys their teamwork and causes them to barely help each other at all, and against Blake and Yang whose synchrony is unparalleled, this is bad news. This disadvantage becomes most apparent when the two girls subdue Vine, leaving Elm completely shocked and alone, and allows Blake and Yang to take her down within seconds. Marrow is based on “The Dog and its Reflection”, which warns the reader that if you covet everything, you lose what you have. Marrow is the most conflicted of the Ace Ops, completely loyal to General Ironwood but genuinely wants to cooperate with Team RWBY. By trying to simultaneously fight Weiss but also talk her down, he leaves several openings for her to attack. Even his Semblance reflects this: he can only freeze targets in one direction at a time, but he can’t stop more than one fighter if his opponents aren’t grouped close together. When he tries to freeze the Armas Gigas, he releases Weiss and she’s able to knock him out. He wanted to covet both his loyalty and his relationship to his new allies, and it led to his defeat. Weiss completely ignores his pleas (return to Ironwood's custody and cast in her lot with Atlas) because she is fighting for what she has, and refuses to betray her team for anything.
Clover is based on “A Fisherman’s Good Luck”, a tale saying that the best luck comes from being patient. Clover immediately prioritizes his newest orders of arresting Qrow in mid-flight back to base, ignoring both Qrow’s offer to peacefully discuss the sudden changes with Ironwood and that he’s supposed to be transporting the deranged serial killer Tyrian to Atlas. This impatience forces Qrow to defend himself and gives Tyrian an opening to crash the plane, and then Clover continues to irrationally focus on incapacitating Qrow first instead of Tyrian in their Mêlée à Trois. The situation resulting from his impatience puts Clover in the unluckiest situation possible: Qrow being forced to pull an Enemy Mine with Tyrian, breaking the Ace Ops leader’s Aura and allowing for Tyrian to stab him in the back, leading to his death. While the outcome is definitely not in Qrow's favor, he at least tries to de-escalate the situation in spite of Clover effectively betraying his trust, spending most of the ensuing fight trying to talk Clover down, and is set to patiently keep trying (until Tyrian took the chance away). He at least walks away from the fight due to that patience.
