Completely out of topic,

but it’s that time of the year when Italians go nuts because of Sanremo.

If you don’t know what that is, let me explain: through the eyes of a mental stable person it’s the most important festival dedicated to Italian music, and this year’s is its 74th edition. Singers compete and the winner gets the chance to represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest.

Through the eyes of crazy people (Italians) it’s like a mystical event and if you don’t watch it you should be banned from Italy.

The Night of the Oscars, the Grammys, all at once. Pure chaos.

It’s happening this week. Right now. So if you have the chance, watch it.

(Fun fact: Fernando Alonso went as a spectator in 2011 to support his ex-wife Raquel Del Rosario who was competing alongside Luca Barbarossa. Gianni Morandi, who hosted that year’s edition, invited him on the stage)

Sanremo 2024 - the post!

Hello everyone! Here you’ll find this year’s Sanremo’s stuff and news (I’ll be uploading this post through all the week). The Festival will start on Tuesday February 6th at 8:30 pm (it’ll probably have a 5 minutes “anteprima = preview” every night), and end on Saturday February 10th, when the final will be broadcasted.

Also this year we’ll have the PrimaFestival, the small show broadcasted on Rai1 at around 8:30 p.m. (February 4th - February 10th). The hosts are Paola & Chiara (singers), Mattia Stanga and Daniele Cabras (tiktokers).

There's gonna be some kind of Dopofestival, with Fiorello and Alessia Marcuzzi (tv/radio host) called “Viva Rai2!… Viva Sanremo” (jingle/sigla) right after the end of each Sanremo's night (6th-9th Feb.). Gli Autogol (comedians soccer-related) will complete some missions for Amadeus on Raiplay.

CasaSanremo- A website about Sanremo and all the artists who will take part, with more infos and interviews (also Italian places and food specialties will be shown). Follow them also on their Social Media Channels, usually they make live video/interviews/shows on FB for example.

To watch it live:

Raiuno -> just click on the first video on the left, or here, to open the Raiuno streaming immediately (I added the whole Rai channels things in case you had troubles connecting directly and wanted to try from there). The RAI’s geoblock is usually removed for Sanremo’s week, no need to create accounts or whatsoever to enjoy Sanremo online!! Remember you can rewatch the whole event and each performance on Raiplay few minutes after it has happened (and the whole week will be avaiable as well for basically the whole following year).

FESTIVAL LIS - songs and whole exhibition explained in signs language

FANTASANREMO - this year as well you can play while enjoying your Sanremo! How does it work? Every person “buys” 5 artisti and marks one of them as a captain. As in the last years, artists will have to do or say something while on stage to help you gain points (and also classification will have a say).

Hosts & Guests + Other Stuff

This years’ host will still be Amadeus (who choose the songs taking part into this Sanremo), a TV and radio host. He will be accompanied by a different co-host each night: Marco Mengoni (singer; first night); Giorgia (singer; second night); Teresa Mannino (actress, comedian; third night); Lorella Cuccarini (actress, tv host, dancer, dance teacher in AMICI tv show; fourth night); Fiorello (tv and radio host, comedian, singer; last night).

Some of the one-night guests during the week will be: John Travolta (actor, dancer); Giovanni Allevi (musician); Marco Mengoni (singer); Sabrina Ferilli (actress); Giorgia (singer) will celebrate her song "E poi"'s 30th anniversary; Russel Crowe (actor, singer); Eros Ramazzotti (singer) will celebrate his song "Una terra promessa"'s 40th anniversary; Roberto Bolle (dancer); the cast of "Mameli" (new serie about the guy who wrote our National anthem); Leo Gassman (actor, singer); the cast of "Il Mare fuori" (Raiplay serie); The Nuova Orchestra Santa Balera to celebrate "Romagna Mia"'s 70th anniversary; Gigliola Cinquetti (singer) will celebrate her song "Non ho l'età"'s 60th anniversary.

How it works

There will be 30 singers in the ARTISTI (artists) section. It will be the only section, as last year. 27 artists were chosen by Amadeus, while the other 3 are the winners of Sanremo Giovani (held in December 2023). The winner of the competition will represent Italy at the Eurovision Song Contest: if he/she/they won’t accept, the choice will be another artist, usually the 2nd classified or the next (the first one accepting). This year we're gonna listen to all the 30 songs on the first night. The 2nd and 3rd night, we'll get to listen to 15 songs each night. The artisti that are not performing during the 2nd night will introduce the performing ones and vice versa on the 3rd night. The artisti introducing the performing artisti will be decided by a public draw during the Sanremo's press conferences on the 2nd and 3rd day. On the 4th night, there will be the usual “covers” night: the artisti this year can choose any song, national or international, from any year (until December 2023) and by anyone (even themselves).

How the Renaissance Shaped the Italian Language

The Renaissance, a period of immense cultural, artistic, and intellectual growth in Europe, played a crucial role in the development of the modern Italian language. Dante Alighieri's Contribution:

Dante Alighieri, often referred to as the "Father of the Italian language," was instrumental in establishing the Tuscan dialect as the standard for the Italian language. Etiquette in Restaurants in Italy

Customs and circumstances are different according to the country and culture and it’s good to be aware of them in order not to offend nor misjudge people. Here following you can find a couple of "unwritten rules" on how to behave in restaurants while in Italy.

DON'T SIT AT A TABLE WITHOUT ASKING IF IT’S FREE

Unlike, for example, some areas of Germany, in Italy it’s common practice to ask the waiter where you can sit, even if there are plenty of free tables.

The best way to act is to ask: “ C'è posto per noi? Siamo in X persone” or “C’è posto per X persone?” (Is there place for X people?) and to let the waiter guide you to a suitable table. In this way you won’t sit at a reserved table nor occupy one which is set for more people. It’s a way to make the work easier for the restaurant. Obviously, if the place the waiter suggests doesn’t suit you, you can ask for an alternative.

DON'T MOVE TABLES AROUND

I’ve learned that in some countries it’s quite normal to move tables according to one’s preference or to put different tables together to accommodate a large party of people.

Just as stated in the previous point, ask the waiters before taking such initiatives. They might have different plans and, please, consider it might be deemed rude as you’re basically moving someone else’s furniture, after all.

DON'T EXPECT TO BE GIVEN THE BILL WITHOUT HAVING TO ASK FOR IT

This is a trap several Americans fall into by thinking waiters are unattentive. In Italy waiters are taught never to hand the bill before the customer is finished, as it’s considered extremely rude. You don’t want to give the customers the impression you want to rush them whatsoever.

Restaurants are not supposed to just amass as many people as possible, they are also supposed to provide an environment where patrons can relax and enjoy themselves. Waiters will give customers a time limit only if the table they’re sitting at is reserved afterwards.

Just enjoy your meal and ask for “Il conto perfavore” when you want to leave the restaurant.

Do you remember when your parents told you to be friend with people that had ideas (politically and philosophically speaking) opposed to yours? Because - in their heads - if you cannot be friend with someone that used to vote for Berlusconi or, more recently, votes for Meloni, then you have a problem. Maybe you're a sociopath, maybe you cannot be friend with anybody (because we are all fascists, after all). They show you how happy they were (and are) with their friends with different mindsets, and underline how small your perspectives are, because you cannot be friend with someone who thinks differently. Wasn't it a way to persuade you that fascism is normal? Wasn't it some kind of oppression? You can be friend with whoever you want to be friend with, don't you? I felt trapped. I felt wrong. I felt singled out. And now I see how it really is: they are justifying horrors, not seeing the truth. And I know they don't want to, they are accomplices of a genocide, of many genocides. How can you justify that, if you are not encircled by fascists that convince you that that's okay? How can you continue to live in a world where it's necessary to keep people in poverty and to conquer them, in order for you to live happily and with all the comforts? The result is the abstention of Italy in ONU poll for a truce in Gaza Strip. I am Italian and I do not stand with Israel. I stand with Palestine and all the civilians that lost their lives in a conflict that persisted for too many years. I stand with the Israeli hostages that weren't rescued for the sake of a war that has no meaning. I stand with the generations that lived under a constant occupation, with the constant fear of being beaten, murdered or bombed. From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.

Italian names of fingers

HAND'S FINGERS:

The official names are: pollice = thumb indice = forefinger or index medio = middle finger anulare = ring finger mignolo = little finger or pinkie

We learn them easily since when we are kids (something that doesn't happen with foot's fingers). We also learn that "dito" = finger, is masculine at the singular but has a double plural: the masculine plural "diti" can be used only when we refer to one type of finger (eg. "i diti indici" = the index fingers) while when we consider all the fingers of the hand, we use the feminine plural "dita" (eg. "le dita della mano" = the fingers of the hand)

FOOT'S FINGERS:

The more official name list is the one originating from the Latin digiti pedis (basically the one used in English too):

primo dito = hallux (lat.: digitus primus or hallux) secondo dito = second toe (lat.: digitus secundus) terzo dito = third toe (lat.: digitus tertius) quarto dito = fourth toe (lat.: digitus quartus) quinto dito = fifth toe (lat.: digitus quintus or minimus pedis)

...with the generally accepted exceptions of alluce (also called pollicione or ditone or dito grosso del piede in informal context) for the first finger, and mignolo (or mignolino, again in informal context) for the fifth.

This said, online you can find another list (its names may vary a little tbh, but these are the most common ones):

alluce illice (or melluce) trillice pondolo mellino (or minolo)

This list doesn't seem to be accurate or scientific (source) but it was found since the early years of 2000's used in several occasions and even some non-traditional medicine books.

It's a game like bingo, but you get more prizes:

★;; prize for two numbers in a line of a card (ambo)

★;; prize for three numbers in a line (terna)

★;; prize for four numbers in a line (quaterna)

★;; prize for five numbers in a line (cinquina)

★;; prize for EVERY number in the card (tombola)

Of course you can't take two prizes for a line (if you already did ambo on one line, you can't make terna on the same line) because that would be too easy :3

Usually the prizes are money - or idk, I've always played like that -, gradually increasing the value with each prize (of course you won't give €10 for ambo or something)
