Humans are such easy prey || Nevros || Trial 2.4 || ATTN: everyone :)
CW: Bright slightly flashing gifs, mentions of cannibalism (sorta), freaky teeth
♫
The words slide against their skin like water slides down glass. The coldness, the anger, the distance, the closeness. Pluto’s calm, collected vote. Orpheus’ recollection. Mizukabe’s angry, regretful reveal. Bo’s needlesharp assessment. Amon’s pity and threat. Baku’s fearful, frustrated anger. Arianna’s insight. X’s accusation.
Petrel’s tears.
The tears turn caustic and they feel them etch lines on their skin like acid, carving them away layer by layer, and Nevros Cantastoria wants to scream, wants to claw, wants to lash out. Sink teeth into something warm and alive and let out their frustration, bite down until the squirming stops.
It’s not because they don’t think they’re guilty.
It’s because the charade is becoming far too obvious.
“Everyone…”
“JUST….”
“SHUT THE FUCK UP!”
Nev’s scream is piercing, cutting the atmosphere of the room like a knife, tearing asunder all accusations and evidence. They punch the table so hard they can feel a jolt of pain up their arm and all the way on their shoulder, sending crayons and pens flying.
Well, isn’t that much better? Getting it all out? They breathe shallow, shaky breaths, and the heart inside their chest begs for a way out, wanting to escape the inevitable but unable to tear open its cage.
Their animal-like snarl slowly shifts. From bared teeth to a tight line to a…
Smile.
“You’re right, Bo. I never gave a damn about how you all would accuse me. I expected it, I guess. I always knew I would likely get caught, ha… I’m clever, but just not that clever. Normally it would be easy for me to slip away, change how I look, and dive back to deeper waters..”
“I guess it’s best for me to really re-introduce myself to you all. It’s only right...”
♫
Nevros Cantastoria stands up. They stand there, on display for everyone to see, like an animal at a zoo for everyone to gawk at. They open their mouth as far and wide as possible, like a moray eel looking to swallow its prey whole. They open it so wide it almost distends, and….
There’s a sickening crunch. Something pushes through their gums, long, glistening and almost transparent.
You realise they’re teeth. They glisten with saliva, more like ice or glass than bone. They’re so long Nevros almost cannot close their mouth, and they’re sharper than needles. It’s immediately apparent that this is what killed Karma.
They turn back around to address everyone present. Nev breathes in deep. It’s time to let them know. It’s time to play the part, now. It’s easier than giving in to the small animal inside their chest that knows it's caught in a snare. They always knew this would happen, and they silenced the fear then, and they will do so again.
“So.. hello.. Nevros Cantastoria, a magical parasite.”
“So, right off the bat.. I killed Karma. There you go, a confession! That’s what you all wanted from me, right? I cornered her in the Belltower and sank my teeth into her and consumed all her magic until she was as dead as a doornail.”
“ There you go. That’s me. Ixodida Magica. A magical parasite. For my.. well, I guess you could call it a job, I steal magic from people. I mean, I can eat any magic, but only eating a person alive really allows me to steal it...”
Isn’t it relieving? No more hiding. No more faking. No more walls. Bare and naked, they’re there, under everyone’s gaze, finally themself. An unnatural thing, only good for taking, taking, taking.
“You’re all so very clever! You basically got it all correct! Clever little detectives, the whole lot of you! I never expected anyone here to have paid attention to my previous little deeds… Bravo, Orpheus. Bet Sasha is very proud. Did you know that Sasha is a huuuuuge detective novel fan? He even had the trench coat custom made after some embarrassing detective in some book that he likes. “
There’s a jittery, almost drunk energy to them as they speak, giving in to the adrenaline coursing through their veins but not allowing for themself to fear. If nothing else, everyone present deserves an explanation.
Most of all the person whom they did this all for.
“I killed Karma to steal her magic so I could kill Victoria Bitter in the most funny and demeaning way possible. Why? Because Victoria Bitter is a real piece of shit who hurt Petrel. But then I mistook Sirius for her because of the stupid hat…“
From the corner of their eye, they look at X.
“Yeah, guess that makes me pretty cowardly, going all Bugs Bunny and stealing Karma’s magic to try and kill Victoria. But I was never pretending or trying to be anything but. We parasites writhe and hide ourselves in the skins of those stronger than us, waiting for the moment to strike. That’s why we live so long, we disgusting, fetid little creatures.”
Nev then turns to Pluto and Orpheus, weighing the two men with their glowing eyes. Nev envies the two of them, how deeply they trust each other, how they always have each other.
“You two are pretty good at connecting the dots.. yeah, I started Mr. Spider’s show after my first kill. Back then, I didn’t know my magic would only last for a year after I took it from someone. It’s not like I ever had any parents around to tell me how being a demonic parasite works… After that, just when it was running out, I ran into… well, it doesn’t matter. But it was just the first of many. Karma was my… 13th kill. Unlucky number, I guess.”
Speaking of unlucky… It’s Amon’s turn.
“It was never about controlling it or myself, Amon. This is just what I am, what my kind is like” There’s a hint of resignation in their voice. The sky is blue. Water is wet. Parasites feed on hosts. Nev is a parasite.
“I came to this school to kill people, plain and simple! To steal as much magic as possible and learn how to keep it all to myself, for good.”
”The only reason I didn’t take yours”, and Nev now turns to Mizukabe, “Is because I’m more partial to fire myself. ”
Nev doesn’t look at Mizukabe any longer than necessary. They seem to feel no shame, their demeanor doesn’t betray them feeling remorse, but when they look at Mizukabe their stomach churns. But they know that it’s better this way. Maybe now he understands why they pushed him away so harshly.
They breathe out, steadying themself…
And finally turning to Petrel. His tears hurt more than any of the accusations and hatred combined, and it’s hard to even look at them, since Nev knows they cannot wipe them away. After all, they’re the one at fault.
Nev smiles apologetically, taking a step closer to him. Their hands shake just a bit as they hover over his shoulders, wanting to hug but now unsure if they should.
They probably shouldn’t.
Instead they momentarily turn to the table and pick up their drawing they’ve been working on since they got to the trial room. It’s finally finished, the last two characters standing in the middle of the circle.
Nev and Karma.
“I’m… I’m sorry, Petrel. I guess before nobody has really meant it when they said ‘no matter what’. I was.. wrong and bad enough as I was, and I didn’t.. I didn’t want you to…” They’re not sure what else to say. Or, more accurately, there’s so much they should say and want to say, but how do they put those into words?
“It’s.. it’s always okay to no longer accept me.”
Nev hands Petrel the drawing, insistently, even if he doesn’t want it.
“You can all vote now. I told you last time, already. You should’ve voted for me.”
