Y’know what does drive me crazy about the whole “Izzy has a redemption arc and then they kill him off!” thing? He is very much not sorry until the end. He does not attempt to redress any of his past behavior with the crew or with Stede or with Ed until the very very end. The closest he comes is to tell Stede that he “gets” Stede and Ed’s relationship (which is another narcissistic centralizing of himself, as though he’s offering Stede permission to be with Ed). Even, sorry, his dressing up and singing is centralizing him and his healing, not what he has done to others.

Meanwhile, Ed DOES try to make amends. In the gravy basket, we see him grappling with what he knows he’s done and how he thinks that makes him a monster. He tries to apologize later - confusedly, imperfectly, and inadequately, but he badly wants to make things better if he can. He asks Stede for guidance in what to do next, because he never apologized when he was captain and he doesn’t really know how. He listens to Fang. He tries to give Lucius catharsis. He’s explicitly trying to give back to the crew with Calypso’s Birthday.

Izzy doesn’t redeem himself because until the end he refuses to face the fact that he might need redemption. He does heal. He does try to do better, but at no point is he really truly sorry until he dies, and maybe not even then.

It’s actually pretty realistic to them both, but it very much needs to be discussed more because this is not just an interpretation. The text absolutely structures it like this.

I personally enjoy that Izzy remains a creepy little weirdo until the end. He’s still putting himself into the center of Stede and Ed’s relationship, despite neither of them wanting him there. Intentional or not, it says that someone can start changing but doesn’t change overnight. He’s still a weird narcissist.

Also gives Stede a chance to be like “how about you get out of our fucking cabin?!”

I can only assume that racism is the root cause for the canyon blaming Ed for Izzy's death instead of Ricky when Ricky is the one who actually shot him and Ed tried to save him

why admit that another mean white man could be to blame when there's a brown man you already hate for not letting your favorite mean white man walk all over him without fighting back RIGHT THERE?
