On the Count of Three (dir. Jerrod Carmichael).
In his feature directing debut, Carmichael (who also stars) crafts a pitch-black buddy comedy with a bleak tone thanks to a very dark suicidal premise involving two best friends struggling with their mental health and making a pact to spend one last day together before taking their own lives. What should be a very tricky story that could easily flirt with glorifying violence or self-harm offers a rather thoughtful mediation on true desperation.
Abbott is believably sullen with a genuine sadness that permeates the screen. There’s a natural chemistry between the two aided by a strong supporting cast made up of mostly comedians and comic actors who all treat the dark material with a sincere effort without trivializing the seriousness of wanting to end your own life.

On the Count of Three    [trailer]
Drama about two best friends on the last day of their lives.
Remarkable directing debut by Jerrod Carmichael who also gives a strong co-lead performance together with Christopher Abbott.
The many darkly comedic parts makes it an enjoyable watch. But it should be mentioned that it's about a very serious topic. You probably should avoid watching the movie if you're already in a dark mood.

Netflix's "Blockbuster." The Most Basic Version of Itself
Get the feeling this will be among the most written about a show that most people already deservedly forgot but I had a decent amount to say
It’s time to autopsy the failed Netflix “Blockbuster Video” sitcom. If one wants little in the way of creative concepts beyond watching a mega-corporation coast on a vague very tired concept across 10 tired sitcom episodes it’s this final product. When this project was first announced beyond the inherent meta-level of Netflix initially killing Blockbuster and now profiting off its demise. Along…

ALMOST CHRISTMAS: FAMILY TOP 5
We all love a good holiday movie, especially one that gives us all the fuzzy Christmas feels, but it’s even better when those films make you laugh out loud.
We all love a good holiday movie, especially one that gives us all the fuzzy Christmas feels, but it’s even better when those films make you laugh out loud. There’s the super Christmasy classics like Home Alone, A Christmas Story, or National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. However, in the past ten years there have been some Christmas movies that find the perfect balance of Christmas and comedy.…

Teaser below the cut!
Truthfully, if you had your druthers, you would’ve skipped the wrap party. Exhausted from late nights at 8H and a cross-country house hunt, there was only so much fuel left in the tank. And if you didn’t have such a soft spot for Bowen…
“It’s one more drink, bitch! C’mon!” He’s hustled you to the bar, promising gin martini’s colder than a witch’s teat, and you just don’t have the energy to refuse him.
Plus, you really do enjoy a good gin martini.
But once he sets you up on the bar top and begins to sing, “For she’s a jolly good fellow…” and the SNL cast and crew joins in, it’s far too late to make a graceful exit. Instead, you grin and bear it, coloring at the applause and attention before downing your martini.
“I hope you’re not expecting a speech tonight,” You call out from your perch, “The window for that closed about a drink or two ago!”
Luckily, they didn’t press you into speaking. In fact, most had said their goodbyes and given their well wishes throughout the week. Popping into your office as you frantically packed cheap cardboard boxes— Chloe, Bowen, Josh, a few of the newbie cast members, the writing team, and finally Lorne.
“Y’know,” He began, settling in a chair is his infuriatingly casual way, “There’s always a home for you here, no matter how things shake out.”
“Aw, thanks boss.”
“And if you change your mind—” He trails off, alluding to your earlier conversation about your future career prospects.
“I’m good, for now,” You quickly cut him off with a smile. “But I appreciate the offer.”
He huffs a laugh, “Birds of a feather, I swear.” Lorne stands and dusts his hands along his slacks, “Tina used the same playbook. Amy too.”
“Well,” You sigh, flushing at the comparison, “I learned from the best.” A beat, because it really is about timing isn’t it? “J.B. Smoove.”
He laughs at that, a true guffaw leaping from his ribs— and yeah, that you would definitely miss. A bona fide laugh from Lorne Michaels? A rarity few were privy to.
“See ya ‘round, kid.” He leaves with two raps on the doorframe, slipping through the halls of the writing offices as quickly as he’d arrived.
