Jin Ling & his Xiao Shushu appreciation, 'cause I don't see enough of it.

Remember that Jin Ling avoided LWJ like plague 'cause he was scared of him shitless, to the point that when WWX fake called Hanguang-Jun he ran without even looking back literally seconds after WWX pulled the same trick on him with JC 'cause he didn't want to risk looking back just in case it was actually HGJ, but he stood against Hanguang-Jun AND sect leader Lan when he thought they were invading his Xiao Shushu's room? Only Jiggy's own intervention made him back down.

& IDK maybe the reason Jin Ling was there at that time was that it was the family section. But since Fairy wasn't with him, maybe he was visiting his uncle. & I find it hard to imagine, like, say, WWX visiting Jiang Fengmian or Lan Sizhui visiting Zewu-Jun or the Lan brothers visiting Lan Qiren in the middle of the night in their private chambers unless something very important has happened. I think according to the standards of their time, they must have been very close for this visit to happen.

Running to Xiao Shushu 'cause JiuJiu is angry with him & adorably hiding behind him 'cause Xiao Shushu spoils him.

Defending Xiao Shushu and having a firm belief that whatever he says is for Jin Ling's own good even in the face of his cool uncle after the rush of winning a fight against a group of his all-time bullies.

Still using the affectionate term "Xiao Shushu"even when confronting him about why would he kill his father, begging him to "say something". Give him anything to make it a little bit less painful.

Jiggy wanting to comfort Jin Ling even when he's crying because he just realized that Jiggy has killed his father.

Jin Ling looking so hurt when Jiggy says that JGS didn't let him hold Jin Ling as though he can't imagine a world in which his uncle is not allowed to hold him. Not being allowed to hold JL being a notable part of JGY's villain origin story.

Jiggy pushing Jin Ling out of danger.

Jin Ling screaming for Jiggy to run even after Jiggy took him hostage. And all the other shit.

(It's worth mentioning that in the books, Jiggy doesn't push JL out of danger and JL still screams for him to run, and he still calls him uncle instead of Sect Leader as he does in the show. It's also worth mentioning that the show made some stunning choices in the Guaniyn temple scene regardimg JGY & JL. As half of the things I'm saying about that scene here only happened in the show.)

Jiggy looking so worried as Wen Ning goes towards JL even though he himself has lost an arm and is bleeding to death. And only looking relieved when Wen Ning holds the blade.

Jin Ling being scarred for life here. Oh my poor, poor baby.

With much difficulty, he coughed up some blood. Everyone present heard a crack that was abnormally clear and brutal.

A whimper of a last breath left Jin GuangYao's throat.

Jin Ling's shoulders shivered. He shut his eyes and covered his ears, too afraid to keep watching and listening.

And my favorite scene that emotionally crushed me: Jin Ling remembering when his uncle gave him little Fairy & mourning his uncle & becoming the hero of the nation who finally told Sect Leader Yao to kindly go fuck himself. 'Cause he told him that his uncle was not worth his tears. Jin Ling thinking that they wouldn't dare to tell him such bullshits if his uncle were still alive. Baby Jin Ling feeling so comfortable around the sect leader and the Chief Cultivator that he could break things beside his feet and scream at him, and his uncle just understanding that he needs to leave him alone at that moment, his Xiao Shushu being the only one who could comfort him and make him happy at that point, his Xiao Shushu giving him his spiritual dog & one of his rare actual, geniune smiles that was so warm & kind that Jin Ling remembers to that day, this happy memory being the one that Jin Ling remembers Jiggy with after all the things he learnt in the span of two days. Him acknowledging that Jiggy's love for him was geniune and real & still choosing to continiue to love his uncle despite everything. Him learning that he can't really resent JGY, WWX or WN 'cause though they gave him reasons for that, they also gave him reasons against that. They gave him reasons to love them. And why choose hate when you can...not choose that. Him breaking a cycle of hate that few of the adults of the story did not drown in. And it must mostly be Jiang Yanli's legacy, but it also proves that Jiang Cheng & Jin Guangyao, despite their own numerous issues did something right raising such a child. He feels so secure in their love. And he's right in that feeling.

I love reading your MDZS/ SVSSS crossover, they're so in character.....And yes, SQQ must love Sukuna and Jogo if he ever read JJK...

Top 7 moments:

When we find out the Jiang Cheng sacrificed himself to the Wens to save Wei Wuxian. It was dropped so casually and I had to backtrack and go "wait, wait, WAIT! DISCUSS IT PLEASE!!"

The juniors in the Yi City arc, they were so adorable, I loved reading them putting on a brave face and investigating.

Wei Wuxian murdering the crap out of Wen Chao with his sexy undead ladies. Him and Jiang Cheng together torturing him while Lan Wangji was sent out and it's like, LWJ is confused, shocked, and horrified.

The scene where Wei Wuxian's roasting Jin Guangshan at the conference post-war and everyone's scandalized. I love it when Wei Wuxian gets bitchy.

Jiang Cheng's intro scene in the donghua where he emerges from the shadows of that tree, pushing aside the leaves. That's so hot of him.

Wei Wuxian covered in blood in the second siege of Burial Mounds and Lan Wangji is defending him. That scene's so cool and romantic in all its iterations. The donghua went above and beyond and made it seem like a wedding.

Jiang Cheng giving Zidian to Jin Ling ;_; It hurts me. It's so much worse knowing that MXTX was planning on killing Jin Ling soon after to really hurt Jiang Cheng.

Reasons I like:

Jiang Cheng-

He's so complicated! You can't immediately look at him and say he's the good guy or the bad guy. I personally think he leans more towards the good guy category.

He's the perfect opposite of Wei Wuxian, he's not a genius cultivator like wwx, he had to work for every bit of progress he made. He started off simply wanting to keep his family together and at peace, but the war happened and his priorities shifted. He's duty-bound, he's always fighting and scraping to be recognized but no one ever does. He wanted so bad to help wwx, but duty made it so that he was forced to pick between his sect and wwx. Forever chained, closed off.

He's jealous and vicious and so, so angry. I get it, I understand the worst parts of him and relate to it.

Wei Wuxian-

Again, super complicated as a person. Wronged at every turn. He wanted to do good and protect people, and for that he kept sacrificing himself over and over again with little value given to himself as a person. He's got his sharp edges and cruelty too, and I feel like people often forget that Wei Wuxian's traumas and his lack of self-appreciation and value on himself show in ugly and vicious ways.

His story obviously shows a key message of MDZS, which is that when people sacrifice themselves thinking that they're protecting their loved one, they only hurt them in another way. I understood his desire to do good, protect people, but there's no one to stand at his side. The loneliness and fear that comes with fucking up so bad that no one even tries to hear you out, no one's listening no matter how loud you shout.

Xiao Xingchen:

He's like Wei Wuxian but 100% times worse and more self-sacrificial. Too trusting, too good, and everyone kept taking advantage of that without bothering to guide him or be honest with him. Like legit, no one told him what they were truly thinking.

I love that xxc wants to be a good person, i hate that he was ruined for it. God I really wanted him to have a happy ending because he's just, he's so NICE. In a world filled with betrayal and deceit, xxc wanted to spread goodness. And yet.

AAHHHHHH

I think these characters made me see the point of MDZS in a very clear way, or in a way that impacted me most. So they're my faves.

Being a Jiang Cheng liker is a struggle! I was getting into MDZS even before the donghua started airing, like around 2018 and back then Jiang Cheng hate was so bad. I kept waiting year after year for the hate to go down but it just got worse the more popular MDZS got. The misunderstandings built up too. I got black and got into a million arguments too ;_; We have to stick together!!!

i have so many thoughts about Jiang Cheng specifically because, okay I read and watched everything about 3 years ago, so I don't remember much other than my fav, so I'm always thinking about everything he did.

nbsdhfb SQQ's monster-loving ass would go gaga for Sukuna. Four armed man wrecking people??? Yes sir! (side note; big tall powerful man who is called king who is only nice to his close servant and confidante???? SQH come get your boy!)

He let Lan Zhan remain in the belief that he had no memories of his life before, uncertain what it might do to Lan Zhan’s image of him if he knew how abhorrently selfish Wei Ying was being. He could not bear to lose this, the unquestioning welcome so readily offered He’d had Lan Zhan and the bunnies. He’d been happy. Rather incandescently so. And then the war came knocking, taking Lan Zhan away from him. For a week, then two, then a month, then almost two. With no definitive end in sight. It is unacceptable.

Sleep would not come to him any longer afterwards. Selfish. Unfilial. Disloyal. With his self-recriminations, his memories also returned in full. Memories of a childhood maybe not as carefree and protected as one might hope but certainly better than what he would have been afforded if Uncle Jiang had left him on the streets. Memories of a life lived on debts. For all that he loved his sect and martial siblings fiercely, he had never been unaware of the expectations connected to his presence at Lotus Pier. However, he has already repaid his debts in full. He bears the scars of Zidian on his back for the disruption of peace he brought to the family that took him in. He bears the scar and memories of agony for the Golden Core he gave to Yunmeng Jiang in repayment for teaching him how to form one in the first place. He is free of debts, if only because he has nothing else to give anyone at all.

He still adores his Shijie, still feels indebted to Uncle Jiang, still wants safety and happiness for Jiang Cheng, still loathes the Wen for burning down Lotus Pier, a place he considered his home. But. While he recalls his utter devotion to Yunmeng Jiang for giving him a home when he had nothing, he also recalls that none of that was ever for Wei Ying’s sake, merely a debt Uncle Jiang felt the need to repay. He recalls Zidian ripping into his back as Shijie stood off to the side, watching, looking distraught, but not doing anything to help. He recalls claiming Jiang Cheng as a brother, just as he recalls never having that claim returned.

What made you ship it?

Back then we were thinking about people to ship JC with, and WQ existed. Since then, Untamed gave our little crackship food. And since then I also started OTPing Chengxian and the core transfer has been a object of easy fixation. It would be inaccurate to say that I started shipping Chengqing because I started shipping Chengxian. But I certainly ship Chengqing through a certain amount of WWX feelings - not only Chengxian, in fact.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

sometimes a mad scientist performs a secret, impossible experiment on someone who doesn't know what's going on and they get together afterwards, and suddenly there's this huge, grotesque thing between them.

I think they should kink on it, but I also think JC would deal very badly indeed with WQ's involvement in the gc transfer. (in my mind she doesn't tell him until she has no choice/it comes out.) I can't overstate how much I adore the kink (in a wide sense) potential between them.

they get one another, about duty and family and keeping the people you care for close and safe and not trusting easily.

also - this is notably less my thing - but I think they'd be good at taking of one another when they're not tearing each other apart for the heavy topics (they agree on duty, but that doesn't mean it would never come up in a bad argument, and the core transfer reframes everything there - suddenly wq has very little room to argue about her dutifulness! you were rearming a direct enemy of your sect babe! you were 100% betraying your sect!)(unless: and I think this is juicy: unless WQ explains that she expected JC to die after the core transfer. no JC with a core, no betrayal.)

and yes also chengqingxian, or at least wq and wwx being besties.

also very into the age-gap between them. she's older! she's already respected and established and a wordly grown-up! it's not relevant to post-canon chengqing except as a contrast to how things were back then, which is still very interesting, but in a canon divergence where the Wen siblings go to Lotus Pier, or sth like that, I really like the idea/image of WQ's crush on JC. it's funny and it's cute and look I think JC should get a win. The win in this case is WQ horny-clamping her jaw and respecting him. his brains. while looking disrespectfully.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

...this is very dependent of "what-ifs" but: I don't think JC would be totally okay with WQ and WWX's relationship.

He's deeply insecure when it comes to people loving him, and WWX betrayed his trust and convinced WQ to go along with it. (in Untamed it's made worse by the fact that JC and WQ already knew one another.) For me, WWX and WQ get one another to a level that other characters don't, I'm only 10% kidding when I call them soulmates, and imo JC would not be able to deal with that very well unless it's solved in Chengqingxian. (which I think he'd shoulder better because they're both here; if WWX is with LWJ it's... it's not exactly YZY while JFM is thinking of WCZ and CSS, but something like that. to me. I do think he'd be jealous.)

less unpopular than it seemed at one time, but bears repeating that it's fine for WQ to neither peg nor dom JC. I mean I'm failing to write that but I think WQ needs and wants to be pampered from time to time. Otoh I also think she's a lot more likely than WWX to tell JC what she needs, since her self-image isn't all twisted up in being better-than-jc at all times.

I clearly didn't try hard enough to keep WWX out of this answer.😔

idea/headcanon: The First Jiang, founder of the sect, was much like JC, they built their home for all the feral goblins that followed them around and dealt with the boring bits to keep the home steady and safe while feral ones ran rampant and kept the water/land safe(ish) and while the disciples have been and remain feral goblins, the sect leader has always needed to be their touchstone, their kite string, JC is that for them, JFM was not, JC is true Jiang

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this meta! The kite string analogy is sheer perfection. However, I would like to pose an alternate theory! Jiang Chi was as much of a feral gremlin as you could ever hope for!

His wife, however, was the MOST type-A person the jianghu could have produced.

SHE was the one who helped build the fledgling sect. SHE was the one who kept her charismatic but disorganized husband on-track. SHE was the one who made sure the sect was able to survive past its founders' lives.

And Jiang Chi adored her for it.

Jiang Chi thought his wife was the most amazing thing since pork buns. Jiang Chi trusted his wife more than he trusted himself. Jiang Chi spent every day of his long and successful life expressing his undying gratitude and appreciation to his cultivation partner.

Fic Stats Game

Thank you @fortune-maiden for tagging me! This is going to be fun :D

rules: give us the links to your fic with the most hits, second most kudos, third most comments, fourth most bookmarks, fifth most words, and fic with the fewest words.

(For simplicity's sake, I am choosing to only count completed fics... of which I have 95 in the MDZS/Untamed fandom, wtf?!)

1 - Most Hits - Think Outside the Shell - Yep, I am completely unsurprised that my first Nie Sect Murder Tortoise fic is #1. It seems to have scratched an itch many people had :D For those who haven't heart of/read it, it's a simple gen fic where, during the Wen indoctrination camp's trip to fight the tortoise of slaughter, NHS tames the xuanwu because apparently he already has one at home ;) This began my fun cracky series and will forever hold a special place in my heart.

2 - 2nd Most Kudos - When Fate Opens a Window, Let Us Fly Through It - I check my stats semi-regularly so technically this doesn't surprise me because of that, but it *does* surprise me how well-liked this fic was! It's NieLan, the first of my "Lan Ribbon Marriage" series. The plot? NMJ & LXC are teenagers and in love with each other but too married to their duties to do anything about it. They wake up in the middle of the night to find LXC's ribbon wrapped around both their wrists, and when LQR enters, NMJ finds out this is the first step of the Lan sect's marriage rites! The secret is that NHS & LWJ teamed up to tie them to each other and have them found out by LQR. It's cute and fun, and was a blast to write - and the series is complete with WangXian and SangHui follow-ups :D

3 - 3rd Most Comments - This category is the reason I chose to only include completed fics, because works in progress tend to get a lot of comments in general with people wanting to encourage the author to continue the story. So the answer is therefore... He's No Bully, He's My Friend - I adore this story and it's special to me, a modern day AU where NHS is homeless and comes across a pit bull that he befriends, and the dog turns out to be a cursed JC (It's SangCheng, but the shipping is minimal at the end after JC becomes human again, so if you prefer gen fic, you might enjoy this one). But this story in particular has a reason that it got so many comments - because the wonderful @takonxmz asked to podfic the story, and many people found their way to it through their recording (which is amazing and I totally recommend if you have an hour or so!!! There is art too!!!).

4 - 4th Most Bookmarks - I'm going to choose the list in my stats because those numbers include both public and private bookmarks (we can see how many there are, we just can't see who bookmarked the private ones) - Think Outside the Shell - My only surprise is that this one wasn't higher on the list! But a SangCheng, a SangYao, and (*checks eyesight*) a WangXian fic all came out ahead of it.

5 - 5th Most Words - I'd Rather Share With You - This is the WangSang fic I wrote for the 2 Cakes fest last year! NHS' first year at Gusu and a storm hits, damaging several homes of Lan disciples, who are all assigned visiting disciples' quarters to share - and LWJ is assigned to room with NHS. It's sweet and they're young and soft (and also petty, and definitely don't get along at first) and, yeah, it's a fun fic. (It's a good thing this tag came out now - later this month, I will have a 50k fic coming out that will skew all the stats lol)

Bonus - Fewest Words - Technically, my 3 lowest word counts aren't fics at all - they're the AO3 entries I did to show off my fanart for the RBB fest this year. So the lowest word count of an actual fic is... The Perfect Spiritual Pet - This is just a cute little gen fic where the One Braincell Trio create an array to find NHS the perfect spiritual pet in the hopes of getting NMJ off his case. They don't know what the animal is, but it's cute, lazy, and perfect for NHS (it's a 3-toed sloth).

*screeching* Saw the update!!! Loved it!!!! I LOVE how nervous JC was at the beginning!!! I was so excited because JC really went to Cloud Recesses without even a sketch of what he was going to say, which meant he would improvise, and that was always going to be great (it did go brilliantly). I also adore that his nervousness clearly revolved around how he admires LXC, even when he logically sees and intents to use the similarities in their positions. Then JC bullied a poor Lan disciple (I'm sorry for the baby Lan, they ought to go cuddle a bunny in the back hills, they deserve it) into letting him talk to LXC so that LXC's future could be decided by LXC himself instead of LQR or LWJ, and I yell at how that's a perfect representation of what marriage to JC would offer: the dignity to be more than a prized doll, but rather someone with the power of choice over himself and others because JC trusts in his abilities.

In absolute concordance with my last point, I adore JC's sheer disbelief at the indignance of LXC being put into seclusion. I love how the elders' treatment of LXC is what makes JC less scared of barging in with his, one has to admit, politically weak offer. The Jiang sect couldn't give that much to the Lan sect, but JC did have something significant to offer for LXC, and that's what has him there, talking with LXC and no other. I love the detail with the tea, the admission of having payed enough attention to notice what of Yunmeng LXC liked, the mere fact of offering a sign of comfort despite (or because?) the fact that he emphatically did not offer a love match (an indication that even if there never was passion, the respect and care would be genuine, even if JC himself seemingly didn't recognize the depth of meaning in his small action).

Then, of course, there's the conversation itself. I love that JC makes such a point of declaring LXC is not the cause of his own problem, that his gender is not the shackle that stops him from continuing being a leader, his elders are. Then when LXC brings back the memory with WX, I love that they both remember the other's actions more than their own, it speaks much of the administration they both held for one another. I also really appreciate how JC uses the opportunity to negate LXC's resignation to put himself down, not allowing him to use double standards and making LXC take the praise to his younger self as also applicable to his older self.

JC then calling forward LXC's anger and frustration, all his negative feelings, is something I adore. For one thing, LXC deserves to express his feelings, deserves to have someone hear him and his pain and his frustration instead of being forced to swallow it all. For another, I clap at the magnificence of how JC transforms LXC's admission of helplessness into the opening to his offer in which LXC has the power to escape that which he had just admitted he didn't want any part of. ("What am I supposed to do to get out of this?" / "You could marry me." I love how JC says it. I love the emphasis on LXC's choice and the power it holds.)

I love how flabbergasted LXC is at the proposal. It really came out of nowhere and it didn't seem to have any relation at all with the previous conversation, so I get LXC. And I also get why he so quickly turns hopeful, that speech was excellent! JC outdid himself with that explanation and offer. I love how he doesn't just offer LXC to be equals, he already treats him so even in the language he uses during the proposal ("we shouldn't stand for it", "we defy expectations", "we could stand against anything").

I hurt over LXC's surprise at JC finding him as brilliant as he'd ever been before, but I do appreciate his caution before getting swallowed by the amazing feeling of still being recognized and valued. I also really like how LXC has conflicted feelings about JC's answer! I appreciate that LXC is given the space to consider love, acknowledge how difficult it would have been to find it even before his fall from grace, but is still given the opportunity to mourn that he'd be making the choice that cut him from having the chance, even if it's the logical choice given the other circumstances.

I also adore how LXC's silence proof JC's bravado for what it is. Man really went there, forced LXC to admit his pain, said one of the most convincing speeches ever to face against fear and oppression (no wonder he could get people to join his sect with that motivation improved charisma!) and then immediately turned to his nervous schoolboy persona, ready to run away from intimidating authority. I cackle. JC is so cute! I love him so much!

I love JC telling LXC that no, he hadn't been sure of himself or that LXC would say yes, he'd just done it anyway. I find it significant because JC is conservative and risk adverse (especially at that time, with the precarious position his sect is in, he'll push his weight around more when he has more power to his name), but he's also someone who goes for the impossible like a pursue predator: putting one step in front of the other and just going forward in small steps (unlike WWX, who does it by jumping at the impossible, struggling to make it submit, except when it doesn't it kills him). Marrying the ZWJ seemed impossible, but the one way to achieve it was to make the offer, so he did it. There will be other obstacles after, but they're the next steps, the attempt has already begun.

Regarding the oppositions to their match, I laughed at how JC teases LXC into taking them as, not exactly games, but less insurmountable obstacles, more like challenges they can enjoy beating. I smile at LXC finding fun in what they intend to do, and love JC declaring he hopes to shake things up more than once. JC is proving once again his intations of making their marriage more than mere survival for each of them, but something powerful enough to shock the jianghu.

I know not every single detail needs to be about feminism, so it's okay if it turns out I'm overreaching here, but I think the next bit with JC wanting to talk to LXC's family by himself and LXC having to stop him because he wants to join him instead is perfect. I say it because I think it illustrates small details that JC probably never considered when he offered LXC to be equals. Even though, yes, JC ends up asking what LXC wants and following through, but point still stands that at the beginning JC thoughtlessly acts one way. He isn't trying to leave LXC behind because his input doesn't matter, but because he wants to negotiate the marriage with LXC's family following proper tradition (which he already ignored once), but what is tradition if not oppression of women's (and omegas' in this 'verse) voices in matter pertaining themselves? I expect JC will find himself facing a lot of things like that, small actions when he doesn't mean to demean LXC, he just never considered that the "natural"/"obvious"/"traditional" thing to do would be going above an omega's (LXC's) choices or desires (oh! maybe it will move to JC facing reconsidering his relationship with /JYL/ and asking her if there's ever been any time when he's unintentionally stepped over her choices or feelings. would she mention about the broken engagement? I know it was more of a WWX thing, but JC also disliked JZX). I mean, it would not be disappointing if the story doesn't go that deep, because it's nice to escape real world sexism, but I do think there's an opportunity to touch on that here, what with LXC's lack of practice facing omega's restrictions (which definitely would make the change more jarring). Either way it goes I'm still excited.

Going back to the story, JC's surety that he'll never be loved hurts me personally, I adore that man! I'm also a tiny bit worried about JC idolizing LXC with all the mentions about how good and kind he is, that's dangerous because it never ends well, no one's perfect after all.

Oh! Next is their walk across Cloud Recesses and I feel so bad for LXC. He's so nervous! No one should be so scared to walk around their own home. I flinch at the elder's words and how quickly LXC looses confidence. I get so excited at JC moving forward in his defense. "I know he is Zewu-jun." I LOVE that. JC sees LXC as an admirable man, he forces others to see the same admirable man by using the title he was bestowed before the revelation about his gender made people forget who LXC really is. And LXC sees how JC does it! Sees that to JC it's a matter of fact, not of convenience! He is touched by it! *unintelligible happy bunny noises*

Enter LQR! I'm so glad LQR appears before things escalate. Also, I love the fuck you JC gives that elder by simply being polite to LQR. My heart belongs to a man that can be mean with or without words. I also love the reminder that LQR is not like other elders (one really has to wonder how different his view must be from other elders after all his years as acting sect leader!) and that he is upset for both of his nephews (because let's be real, being sect leader must be LWJ's definition of hell, that man hates politics almost as much as WWX). I'm glad LQR too sticks it to that one elder by telling him they won't wait for their meddling asses. Also, I laugh so bad at JC telling LXC that his (let's admit it, bratty) attitude is consequence of living with WWX, because it may be partially the truth, but I am positive half of it is just that he's a Jiang and therefore at least half gremlin. On a completely different hand, my heart melts at JC saying "when" and telling LXC to have faith in them. To JC, the hard part was getting LXC to agree, facing everything that comes after is much easier because he has the person whose opinion matters most on his side, neither of them is alone anymore.

Oh! How glorious! I love the confrontation with the elders! LQR snapping! LXC using the fact they vacated him against them! JC serving truths! LXC defending JC to mirror how JC did it for him! And LWJ! Oh, LWJ! I love how this scene uses LWJ's propensity to stay silent to emphasize the moment he decides to speak. And that he does it to ask for what LXC wants. I love, love, love that LXC does analyze the situation, does consider what he wants and it's not JC, what he wants is his position at Cloud Recesses, but what he can have is marriage, and JC is the best choice, not because JC won't use him, but because JC is honest and trustworthy. I love that LXC considers his sworn brothers, the explanation of why he wouldn't want NMJ (the visceral disgust at the idea of his friend changing his opinion of him enough to pursue him just for his gender) and why JGY is not an option (the idea that there is affection there, despite the fact that LXC knows JGY is the one person who could have outed him, and I wonder if we're going to touch that point again in the future, LXC & JGY isn't a tag in this story, but I think there's something to explore there).

Oh! How lovely it is when LWJ accepts LXC's choice, even if it is leaving, even if it is JC, simply because he doesn't want his brother unhappy. And once LWJ says something is, it is. Even before reading this scene I knew the elders really made a stupid choice making LWJ sect leader. He will hate it, but he's not half the conciliator LXC is, LWJ will send them to fuck off more often and more emphatically than LXC would ever dream of doing, doubly so after their treatment to his brother. Really bad choice by those elders, and it already shows.

Really love that JC and LXC get to have a little moment with LWJ and LQR after the circus. I adore the brotherly moment between the twin jades, I always appreciate family love getting emphasis in stories and it's quite obvious that LWJ and LXC's relationship here is particularly close and important to both of them. LQR suggesting being hasty AND celebrating at Lotus Pier is fantastic! It really puts weight to how much they need the wedding, how much the Lan elders are a hindrance to LXC's future happiness, and how much LQR and LWJ are trusting JC to do for LXC. And uff, that ending between LXC and JC! I LOVE LXC making sure to be there to see JC off (that's classic romance and I'm weak for it, okay?). I also adore JC's last words. He's so aware of what little he offers, that in a better world it would mean nothing because everyone would still respect LXC because nothing about him has changed, so he's thankful for the fact LXC chose him, trusted him. And it means so much because JC is dutiful to a fault, once he gives himself to someone he does it wholeheartedly. Even if I didn't know JC will fall in love (because it is a XiCheng fic), I'd be sure he would treasure LXC as his partner and I think that's the part that will eventually be most touching. No matter how many times JC accidentally makes mistakes, he'll definitely not ignore them nor stop trying to be better. If nothing, because he'll never want a marriage like his parents', which means never ignoring (like JFM) and never pressuring (like YZY) and always respecting. Always. And LXC doesn't know any of this yet, but he's already been touched by JC's continued admiration for him, and he trusts JC already for it, and I love that. Also, gosh, the scene is just so romantic with LXC talking to JC's out of sight figure!

To sum it up, I loved this chapter so much! Sorry for the ridiculous length of this ask, I'm a rambler and it's hard to cut it short when I don't even hit the comment box's character limit. Hello! Thank you so much for your patience. I know it took me ages to get a reply put together. Combination of me buried under a lot of responsibility, trying to maintain various relationships, making sure my cat gets all the attention he deserves, being permanently exhausted (because who’s got time to sleep?), and battling with anxiety, depression, and apathy (whichever is giving me the most grief at any given time, lol). But I assure you, never ever ever is silence from me because I’m frustrated or annoyed at someone for gushing over something I’ve written. There literally is very little that lifts my spirits as much, so thank you so very much for such an in-depth and thoughtful reaction to my second chapter. I couldn’t stop grinning like a fool when I first read through it, and it's the same again now going back through so that I could finally compose a reply! 😊

Bashful nervousness is a favorite trope of mine, especially for typically tough (or seemingly tough; we all know JC has a gooey center) characters, so there was no way I wasn’t including those butterflies in JC’s tummy.

Another reason that JC is so careful to approach LXC first, in addition to your assessment, is because he’s teetering on first-hand experience of the same thing. Luckily not from his own sect disciples, but the other sects have been poking at him, trying to shake his confidence and insist he can’t/shouldn’t make his own decisions anymore. He knows how shitty that feels, so like hell is he going to do it to LXC. And then yes, the tea is so important, and something I think we can all appreciate; having anyone notice small things about ourselves and just automatically know things we will or won’t like and accommodate them without needing to ask or be asked is a tremendous feeling—coming from someone offering a potential future away from suffering, it’s an outright beacon of hope, I’d say.

I’m so glad you enjoyed the brief story about their past experience when they were kids! I hadn’t even planned that ahead, it just came to me while I was writing. Because of course they would have known each other and been around each other as kids, and of course two men both struggling with self-confidence issues would see in others greater accomplishment/strength than they see in themselves. Not allowing double standards for oneself is important too. That’s actually something I’ve personally struggled with over the years and gotten much better at, so unsurprisingly, it becomes a theme in many of my stories.

Regarding their conversation, I’m really enjoying your assessment of how it was structured and how it played out, because you’re pinpointing a lot of things that I didn’t intentionally do, but I think I can safely say was an instinctive choice subconsciously while I wrote. Like JC’s continued use of “we,” putting power in LXC’s hands as well as his own. You’re right that that, among other of his actions, it does a great job showing LXC the sincerity of his words and his offer more than him just giving a plain offer of words only.

😁 I agree that JC’s bravado crumpling in the face of LXC’s silence is adorable. Honestly, I’m not sure how in character it really was—the boy is probably much more likely to just keep leaning headlong into confidence until he’s alone and can have a private panic attack—but maybe not. Regardless, it’s stinkin’ cute to watch them both fumble through this conversation, proposal, and acceptance.

I really dig your analysis of the difference in how JC and WWX differently approach going for the impossible. WWX definitely is the type to run wildly in before much thought is given, whereas JC thinks very long and hard about stuff. I think his inherent trust in LXC is what helps make this attempt easier, though. He knows that LXC is a good man; if his attempted proposal were to fail, he at least can rest assured that LXC won’t ridicule him for it, nor will he spread word of what happened around the cultivation world, even if he was still known to be an alpha and still a sect leader. Already, the seeds for a successful alliance are sewn before JC even gets there.

It’s definitely not overreaching to see some parallels to feminism here. A/B/O fics open a lot of doors for exploring things like gender roles, gender stereotypes, gender oppression, etc. I’m very firmly feminist, so I definitely lean into those themes a bit in my writing in general and especially with stories like these, though it also isn’t my focus for the story or the writing, so I don’t know that I’ll lean into it super hard either.

"Going back to the story, JC's surety that he'll never be loved hurts me personally, I adore that man!" I love JC like I would a son, lol, so I always feel the instinct to hug him tightly while swatting away his enemies with a big stick. 😂 And yet, I still love to put him through some heartache and struggles before I let him have his happy endings. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yass, JC defending LXC against the shitty elder in the middle of Cloud Recesses was one of the earliest scenes I had in mind when I started brainstorming this fic. I love protective characters, which JC is to people who matter to him certainly, and I absolutely adore characters who have the courage and wit to verbally eviscerate others because I sadly do not have that trait. Another reason JC is my favorite.

Having LQR be a good guy is a refreshing change for me. I don’t hate him really in canon, but I don’t like him either; he reminds me too much of rigid, uncompromising people I knew, especially when growing up, but I do understand that he’s certainly more complicated than a one-note villain. Way back when I first conceived this idea, I’d planned on him being hateful to LXC too, but it just didn’t feel right. I lingered on that scene near the end of the drama when Jingyi is running his mouth telling everyone all the tea about Su She, and mister prim and proper LQR is just sitting back and letting it happen, like, “Yeah, he said what he said, and he was right!” LMAO I needed that for this fic too.

You’re spot on with everything that plays out in the scene where they all have the discussion of the proposal and how things will turn out. *chef’s kiss*

"LWJ will send them to fuck off more often and more emphatically than LXC would ever dream of doing, doubly so after their treatment to his brother." Yes. Honestly, this makes me wish I was going to focus more on LWJ, because I would love to linger more on Lan “You Are Not Qualified To Speak To Me” Wangji. 😆

“I LOVE LXC making sure to be there to see JC off (that's classic romance and I'm weak for it, okay?).” lolol. Oh yeah, me too!

sometimes i think about how zhancheng’s relationship is (almost) double the lenght of wangxian.

wangxian is like... they met in CR and lwj fell in love & wwx became kinda obsessed/found a friend (time: about maybe 6 months)

and then only had occasional meetings over the next years before the war fully breaks out when they are maybe 17. upon which they alienate each other through continued miscommunication and omissions. after the war lwj spends a year at CR and wwx at LP until wwx frees the wens and spends another year, with one (1) a visit from lwj, at the burial mounds until he dies at maybe 22. when he and lwj knew each other for less than four years (i’m excluding the time they spend apart)

13 years after that he spends months with lwj, getting to know him, falling in love, etc. until they get married at the end of the story.

meanwhile zhancheng is like... they also met in CR but didn’t have much of an impact on each others’ lifes other that lwj was the guy wwx was obsessed about. but then they spend those three months with eachother. jc who just lost his sect, wwx and won’t let himself fall apart. and lwj who is looking for the guy he loves while they’re in a war and his home was burned and his father is dead. and they do this together.

then during the war i think they kinda drift apart bc wwx was found and wwx was what pulled them together in the first place and now he is pushing lwj away.

then jyl is dead. wwx dies. lwj vanishes with wwx. and wwx is dead. jc is alone and rebuilding a sect and partly raising a baby and hates. lwj meanwhile mourns his love and heals and raises lsz and hates.

three years after that they meet again and at maybe 25 is when their story really starts.

they hate each other. lwj is the one who protected wwx when jc couldn’t - because of his feelings, because of his sect, because of jyl. jc is the one who didn’t protect wwx - was the one rumored to have killed him.

they push each other. tear each other apart. ruin each other and there is no other person who knows either of them as good as each other. not jl who understands jc’s brashness and cruel words, and soft hands when he had a nightmare or feels inferior to his parent’s legacy but has things that are out of grasp for a child. not lxc who almost knows lwj as good as he knows himself but doesn’t understand him sometimes. not nhs who grew up with both of them but pulls always further into himself after his brother’s death and while there, his presence is always superficially and never meaningful. not the few civilian elders who survived the burning and knew jc as a child. not lsz who adores his father.

and even if their relationship stays one of hate forever i fell like spending ten (thirteen) years hating someone brings a whole new kind of intimacy and depth.

I don't remember what fic 16 is exactly, but I know the scene OP is talking about and have extended info! The reason Wwx was making a spell to summon swords was initially to retrieve Su She's sword from the waterborne abyss, and it was later used to retrieve some of the swords for everyone trapped in the xuanwu cave! Was this also the fic wwx created barriers for all of the sects as some kind of reparation?? It was definitely not a time travel fic, but inventor wwx fic

I don't recall if #16 sword summoning talisman is part of the turtle shield inventor WWX one, but as I also can't recall the title/author, here's more details on the turtle shield inventor one: I'm pretty sure it's madam yu/JC critical, WWX gets named Turtle Lord or something for his shields, LZ gave WWX the special jade he needed to make the shield and then Madam Yu ordered him to give it to JC. I think LZ gave his CR token to WWX so he could create another shield...

no that's definitely a different fic I remember turtle shield fic much more clearly and it didn't have that. I meant barriers to protect the Sect strongholds, using a series of nodes at points using the sects' insignia as a map/blueprint, not individual shields for a person

Golden cores were literal orb-like jewels that could be cut out of a cultivator’s chest, thus creating the opportunity for an illegal poaching trade. There was a scene where Wen Chao gleefully cut out Jiang Cheng’s, and I think he also took Wuxian’s. During the Sunshot Campaign when JC and LWJ get their swords back they also find the room of stolen cores, and are shocked to find WWX’s. Anyone know this one? Please!

question! jc is obviously not a dad, but how do you view lwj regarding his relationship with lsz? do you think he's a father figure or a more general trusted-mentor-within-the-communal-space figure, and does this change based on which version of the story you consider?

good question! and potentially unpopular answer? my opinion re: lan wangji and lan sizhui is that i love & adore the father-son relationship they share in most fan content and will break down weeping if i think about it too long. but i also don't think it's entirely accurate or realistic, and that's a combination of lwj's absence from lsz's initial settling period + the communal nature of the sect + overall i just don't think lwj behaves like he views himself as lsz's parent? i mean obviously he cares about lsz in a way that goes beyond the bonds between sect members but in his interactions with lsz he comes across more like a beloved mentor type figure than a substitute parent. if you get me.

i guess it's kind of similar to how wei wuxian likes to talk big about lsz being his baby son he gave birth to himself yada yada while he was essentially his babysitter. and then lsz goes off with wen ning right after their reunion. it's like, wx are important to lsz and he trusts them and they probably are the closest thing to parents he's got left, but he also clearly views the wens as his true family more than anyone else and i do think that's significant

Your Sect leader Yao is a delight and I adore how the poor man just wants to be useless in peace! But alas, familial obligations are a thing and his nephew needs his help. I'm curious now, was he also married to Nie Xiaoxiao in Chief cultivator Yao? Is that part of why NMJ suggested him? Also, thinking about the ending still makes me giggle like mad. Poor JC... Huge kudos!

despite this action I don't think he genuinely cares about nmj, honestly. appreciated, almost certainly. but I don't think he truly respected or cared about many people. it's just that he could see his death right there in nmj's eyes and this choice was a last-ditch gambit to preserve his own life by risking it in the most performative way possible

isn't it wild that wen chao and jiang cheng have the same advice for wwx which is: stop interfering in the affairs of other clans?

even the ego-blinded wen chao can tell that wwx is into lwj

honestly wwx's crush just makes me so sad in this arc. so delicate and new and he's so young and so many terrible things will happen

see I think lxc valuing jgy and publicly supporting him and praising him earned him one of the only spots on the list of people jgy genuinely cares about. I don't think he respects him, at least not enough to not use him to murder his friend, but I will argue that jgy feels genuine affection for lxc and BELIEVES he never hurt him/never wanted to hurt him. this dialogue is mental, it's not a performance

this is also why jgy/lxc is more emotionally true to me than either of them with nmj (even tho I obviously don't support it or thinks jgy would be a good romantic partner), sorry nielan fans I appreciate your perspective but I think this is the more textually supported one, even if it ends much worse

jgy is so fascinating to me like the way he'll twist himself into whatever he needs to in order to survive. he defends himself saying 'he said horrible things to me and beat me' then 'he insulted my mother' then 'he took credit for my accomplishments' and each one seeming to flow naturally to the next as nmj rejected those reasons…very interesting that nmj criticizes jgy for wanting praise and credit, contrasting characters like lwj, who are widely praised for not caring about credit or glory

this last shot of nmj IS haunting tho. jgy may not have cared about him but I think nmj really cared about and trusted jgy, and this betrayal of someone who values justice and loyalty was very hard to take

LWJ shows maturity in allowing choices he doesn't agree with instead of enforcing his own views like at Cloud Recesses -> ???.. LWJ didn’t enforce ANYTHING on WWX at Cloud Recesses (or ever). WWX was a guest there who showed nothing but disrespect to the place that’s essentially LWJ’s home and were pushing his boundaries relentlessly (in cql he even got him drunk and later whipped for it). But I guess, this fandom sees LWJ as some kind of freak that needs to be taught how to human by any means the protagonist deems necessary 💁‍♀️ idk why y’all like to vilify LWJ that much. I swear, it doesn’t make JC any better

Hello, Nonny! First of all, thank you! I write in tags without the expectation of anyone seeing them, let alone think anything about them. And you didn't just read, but came to talk to me about them! That makes me happy!

Second, and getting into the matter at hand here, you're right! LWJ absolutely had the right to punish WWX at Cloud Recesses! WWX was being a horrible guest, an absolute asshole! And LWJ delivered what he thought was appropriate punishment, nothing wrong there. But anon, nonny, the issue in discussion (which isn't really a discussion since I'm not trying to argue with anyone, but you know what I mean) when I mentioned that in my tags is not whether LWJ was right or wrong when he did what he did. It's the fact that he made WWX take punishment, which is the literal meaning of enforcing his (Gusu Lan's) rules. That's an objective fact, not a matter of morality. I agree that LWJ did nothing wrong by doing so, it would have been against his precepts not to. Gold star to LWJ for not caving to peer pressure and let people get away with what they want just because they're young masters of other sects! ⭐

With that point made clear, just like I said in my tags, it is a show of how mature LWJ is to understand that outside Cloud Recesses he does not have the authority to demand WWX does what he wants him to do. It's a good thing about LWJ! An important part of his character that people, including me, love about him! Nonny, I mean it sincerely, I don't understand where we are disagreeing here and why you mention LWJ needing to be taught how to be human, much less by any means possible. This is part of how human LWJ is. Other parts of LWJ being extremely human are his pettiness, his stubbornness, his adoption of LSZ, his evolution from the first life to the second. LWJ doesn't need to be changed by other people. He does change, but that's on him as a person, because people are ever-growing, always evolving, so 30-somthing!LWJ cannot, and therefore isn't, the same as teen!LWJ or even 20-something!LWJ. People, including WWX, can be catalysts of that change, but it's always on LWJ to do the work of growing up, of choosing what growing up means to him personally.

Regarding my opinion of LWJ, anon, I won't lie to you, he's far from my favorite character, that's JC and then JL, with everyone else following very far behind (sorry LXC, NHS, I do adore you, I promise). Still, I don't hate LWJ nor feel the need to vilify him, because he's far from a villain, quite the contrary, actually. I think he's an interesting character, one with plenty of virtues and also many flaws. Also, one that frustrates me to no end. Not because who he was at the beginning, I loved teen LWJ! I also loved post-war LWJ, who was as out of ideas on what to do as everyone else. Plus, as I stated in the tags you mentioned, he's mature enough to recognize what he cannot do! I love that about him! No need for anyone to change that about him, please, do not touch that part of him. I dislike where his character arc took him after the time skip, because I understand, sort of, how and why it happened, but it contradicts my own personal views of the world. That's my own issue, though, so really, it's immaterial to any analysis of his character outside a personal opinion. (You can argue the point that personal opinions always color character analyses, I won't say it's entirely wrong, but I try to believe I'm not so shallow as to not recognize when that's happening, which is why I try not to talk about post time skip LWJ in any detail.)

Oh yeah, regarding your mention of JC in the ask, I'm sorry to say I don't understand what the point of it was, so I don't know how to address it. My apologies, anon, if I let you down by that, I'm always okay for more questions or plain conversation in my inbox, so feel free to explain what you meant by sending another ask, hopefully I'll be able to attend to you better with more input.

I truly am in deep with this hyperfixation and I am making it everyone's problem.

Yes! Please keep me updated when you get to that point because I want all of your perspective! Since I haven't read most of the book (just a few scenes to verify certain things) I wanna know if it's as chaotic in the books and if you liked the changes!

LWJ's individual arc is actually something I really enjoyed. WY did a really good job playing it out, from someone who believes wholeheartedly in the rules because his mother died for it so he has to because if he doesn't then does anything matter? and then WWX bursts through the door with like the most minimal but important rules and throughout the story, he learns the difference between doing what's right and doing what's just and when each has its place and its wonderful. I do think that LWJ definitely had more wiggle room to help but that's a convo for another time (and maybe a meta I might write later). And the three months in-between with JC where like JC is a sect leader of a pretty much dead sect and he still makes the time to search for his brother (which is like the 3rd time JC picked WWX over his sect) and he loves him. And then he watches them split and wonders why when they love each other. And knows that JC loves WWX. And LWJ loves WWX too. And there's so much!

I, too, adore W@ngChengX!an! There are so many ways they balance eachother! ChengX!an pre-canon and the angst during the SSC, W@ngX!an during Cloud Recesses, Zh@ncheng after WWX leaves and LWJ wants to learn more about WWX and just learns more about JC too (NHS knows all and introduces them bc I'm always a huge fan of the LXC and NMJ playdates with the baby bros), the three months in between, the 13-16 years in between! The jealousy, the angst, the potential! I could go on for days! (I'm actually planning to do an AllCheng agenda post with various ships and dynamics and ideas because while I can't write fic for shit, I can headcanon my days away).

Their perspectives balance out too! WWX thinks in the broadest perspective of what is Wrong and What is Right, JC is the mid-ground perspective of what are the long-term implcations in society, can it impact how we do other things and how can we plan around it and LWJ (now) thinks of the individual, based on their merit and who they are and becomes less judgemental as a result. I think that's mainly why I don't ship W@ngX!an as much as I could have. But the three of them together have way more going for it (also I have a very specific headcanon that WWX does the flute, LWJ plays the guqin and JC sings the lyrics for WuJi since I feel like a grumpy grape like him must be great at slam poetry and lyrics).

Maybe its because I know that they way my loved ones show that they care is because the question me. They care enough to confront me, to meddle, to ask, to let me rant and help me find my way to the choice that's best for me. So even in the most enabling and unhealthy fics I read, I always want that. The "I will side with you, always, but I want you to know my side too." The vulnerability of opening up and showing what the implications are. The messy fights, the yelling, the poking at soft spots is something I will always want to see.

Like one of my fav scenes is when JC confronts WWX before they decide to stage the fight for this reason! Like you see where their priorities lie and that they both have valid perspectives for the positions they're in but they come to the slow realization that they can't have it all. And WWX I think does want to leave, he doesn't want to pretend he's okay and he doesn't want to spend a second more fronting for the sake of YMJ because he's done enough, fulfilled his debts and he wants a little break before even attempting to come back home (Burial Mounds doesn't sound like a good long-term solution but I also don't think he expected to live long).

LXC is definitely an enabler but I think it's also similar to JYL's response to trauma. And he does like so much for LWJ because he put all his love for his parents and family on his brother (gives me a lot of Itachi and Sasuke vibes but less extreme and with less trauma). So, similar to JC and WWX, when LWJ tells him something in a sure tone, LXC believes it.

Like considering demonic cultivation and resentful energy are so harmful (look at the Nies), it would be like if you're brother came to you and told you that he did some crack and now has superpowers after disappearing for months and you believe him because if WWX told JC the stars were falling, JC would have run for cover without looking at the sky. Like, the amount this man trusts WWX is insane. It might have been despiration but also he knows if anyone can do it, it's his Shixiong. And every scene, he asks, he asks WWX to clarify, to let him know, to let him and I just can't with these boys.

Wang Zhuocheng will always impress me because this was essentially his break out role! And the intro scene where LJY mentions that JC killed WWX so why is he checking in MXY? The flashbacks with his family and how much he yearns to keep them together but we know that its gonna fall apart! And his interactions with Jin Ling (who also did an amazing job in the role) were perfect despite the actors being like one year apart in age! Just all of it was so good and I will never not be impressed!

Sorry for the essays! Just really excited about the Untamed and I have a lot to gush about.
