Day 4 of Analysing Taylor in Quarantine
Day 4: exile
1 sentence summary:
"I can see you standing, honey With his arms around your body Laughin', but the joke's not鈥協unny鈥卆t all And it鈥卼ook you five whole minutes To pack鈥卽s up and leave me with it Holdin' all this love out here in the hall"
This seems like an honourable part of the Love Triangle Trilogy, again from James' perspective. He is looking at a relationship that he was once in, and he still has feelings for his ex, who has moved on. This song could also be about Betty, when she doesn't take him back, and she moves on. The one who moved on, the girl, is laughing with her new lover at some inside joke. The joke could also be referencing 'Lover', when Taylor says, 'you'll save all your dirtiest jokes for me', but the girl left him, and is using her dirtiest jokes on someone else. For the girl, it was a fleeting relationship. When things got hard, she left very easily, rather than staying and working through it. The boy felt the pain more deeply as he truly loved her.
"I think I've seen this film before And I didn't like the ending You're not my homeland anymore So what am I defending now? You were my town, now I'm in exile, seein' you out I think I've seen this film before"
Like a movie, there are good bits and bad bits. They have both been in a relationship similar to this and the boy didn't seem to have liked it (who can really blame him). A homeland is a place you feel safe, and the boy who once felt safe around the other narrator no longer does. If he didn't feel safe around her he has no reason to defend her, and she seems to have changed completely so even if he was defending someone it's a person completely different to who he initially fell in love with. The girl through him out of her life and her heart, and the boy having been through a similar heartache knew what to expect.
"I can see you starin', honey Like he's just your understudy Like you'd get your knuckles bloody for me Second, third, and hundredth chances Balancin' on breaking branches Those eyes add insult to injury"
This is happening at the same time in the girl's head. The boy is clearly staring at the girl, as though he doesn't want to believe what is happening. The breakup is also hard on the girl and she isn't looking at him while doing it, making it seem like she doesn't want to end things. 'Balancing on breaking branches,' seems to be have a double meaning. The girl is talking about how her earlier relationship was doomed for failure, since when a branch breaks it falls, and crashes, and that would be the relationship. The other meaning is that her current relationship is hanging on by a thread and she wants to save that at all possible chances. The boy seems to be a fighter and that he'd do anything for true love. 'Understudy' is a theatre term for when the lead or the person originally cast as a particular role can't play it for whatever reason. In the boy's mind, the guy the girl currently is with is just someone who found her when he wasn't there, someone who saved her when he wasn't there and the girl probably feels like she now owes him something. The girl also says that she gave her ex many chances to redeem himself, showing that this new relationship wasn't a spur of the moment thing.
"I think I've seen this film before And I didn't like the ending I'm not your problem anymore So who am I offending now? You were my crown, now I'm in exile, seein' you out I think I've seen this film before So I'm leaving out the side door"
Even the girl has been through this relationship many times before, she too is determined to change the ending, at least with her current lover. The girl says 'I'm not your problem anymore', showing that she felt like she was a burden on her ex, and he did little to notice that. The girl thought the world of her ex, but with all the pain he put her through, she is saving herself, and leaving quietly. Side door, for me, implies a quiet way to leave, and go completely unnoticed. The use of a side door metaphor seems kind of ironic here, considering that the girl's presence will always be in her ex's heart and life, but rather he left her more quietly.
"So step right out, there is no amount Of crying I can do for you All this time We always walked a very thin line You didn't even hear me out (You didn't even hear me out) You never gave a warning sign (I gave so many signs) All this time I never learned to read your mind (Never learned to read my mind) I couldn't turn things around (You never turned things around) 'Cause you never gave a warning sign (I gave so many signs) So many signs, so many signs You didn't even see the signs"
The boy is telling her to show her true self, and that whatever he does will never be enough for the girl. Both of them refused to tell the other person how they were actually feeling and that resulted in them not understanding each other, feeling irritation with each other. The girl was the leader, and according to the boy, she never let him talk. Something I found really interesting was how this seemed like an argument, with their voices overlapping each other's and both of them are trying to be heard. I love how Taylor has written this so you, as the listener can decide who's side you want to be on. The girl says that according to her, it could not have been clearer that she was unhappy, and her ex fights back, implying that the girl should have told him when she felt a problem. At the end, the girl makes the boy realise that all the signs were there and he was too preoccupied to see it, and the boy accepts it.
"I think I've seen this film before And I didn't like the ending You're not my homeland anymore So what am I defending now? You were my town, now I'm in exile, seein' you out I think I've seen this film before So I'm leavin' out the side door"
Both of them have gotten really tired of the fighting and have accepted that this is really the end. They both seem to have forgotten that the girl's current boyfriend is with them too. They are both leaving the other's heart quietly. They both accept that there's absolutely nothing worth left to stay for, and they can't keep doing this, (it seems like an on - off relationship). Defending could be the person and their actions or just things that are worth staying in a relationship for, but neither are left so it's time to walk out.
"So step right out, there is no amount Of crying I can do for you All this time We always walked a very thin line You didn't even hear me out (Didn't even hear me out) You never gave a warning sign (I gave so many signs) All this time I never learned to read your mind (Never learned to read my mind) I couldn't turn things around (You never turned things around) 'Cause you never gave a warning sign (I gave so many signs) You never gave a warning sign (All this time) (So many times) I never learned to read your mind (So many signs) I couldn't turn things around (I couldn't turn things around) 'Cause you never gave a warning sign (You never gave a warning sign) You never gave a warning sign Ah, ah"
This seems like the part where they realise that there is another person and their argument is ending. They are repeating everything because they seem like they would keep doing that before ending at a place. While people think the ex had the last word, 'you never gave a warning sign', the girl actually had it, when she said, 'ah ah', which is kind of like, 'oh but I did', and then she dramatically leaves, slamming the door on her way out.
Overall review: I love this song so much! Like it's one of my favourites. I love how a story is told and it can connect to other songs in this album. The lyrics and the meaning, the show of relationships having fights, and sometimes those fights getting public, make this song seem very 'human' and honest to the people who wrote it. I will honestly never get over how Joe and Taylor are in the happiest relationship ever, but are still writing these sad breakup songs. This song is so true, and raw. I'm genuinely in love <3

TAYLOR SWIFT at the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on November 11th 2021 wearing ZUHAIR MURAD
This is such a cute outfit for Taylor.
I loved this bright look. It was a nice compliment to the black dress she wore on Seth Meyers show the same night. I think Taylor Swift really knows how to rock a ponytail. It looks so cute on her. I love the bangs and other loose pieces. I'm also loving the red lip. I love her red era!
I really love this dress. I think it's a really cute cut. I love the gold accents. I love that they line the neckline and sleeves and pockets. Just very cute and feels very glamorous. I like that she chose gold shoes to compliment the accents. Just a great look to kick off Red (Taylor's Version).
