IMAGES: USAF B-1B Lancer bombers perform training with Swedish Air Force Gripens

The U.S. Air Force B-1B Lancer bombers, assigned to the 28ª Bomber Wing of Ellsworth Air Base, North Dakota, took off from their deployment site at Lulea-Kallax Air Base, Sweden, to train alongside Swedish Air Force JAS39 Gripen aircraft.

The mission, named Vanguard Adler, was conducted as part of the 24-2 Bomber Task Force and designed to integrate U.S. bombers with Swedish JAS39 Gripen fighters and terminal attack set controllers (JTACs) operating in the Arctic and Baltic regions.

The exercise included scenarios of surface attack, air interdiction and approximate air support, all aimed at building partnerships and increasing readiness.

"This timely opportunity for our crews to exercise our collective defense capabilities with our Swedish partners, who will soon be NATO allies, in the Arctic region is incredible," said Lieutenant-colonel Benjamin Jamison, director of operations of the 37º Bomber Squadron and leader of the BTF 24-2. "This demonstrates our firm commitment to our partners and Allies, demonstrates our expansive reach and sends a strong message of deterrence to potential opponents."

The ability to generate surges from locations like Lulea is a key focus area for the U.S. Air Forces in Europe - African Air Forces. Through Vanguard Adler, BTF 24-2 sought to exercise the ability to quickly integrate forces and equipment into allied and partner locations.

All training objectives have been achieved, according to the employees.

The US routinely demonstrates its commitment to the Allies and NATO partners through BTF missions. Through these missions, USAFE-AFAFRICA allows the dynamic use of forces in the European theater, providing strategic predictability and guarantee to the Allies and partners, while contributing to deterrence, introducing greater operational unpredictability for potential opponents.

Regular and routine deployments of U.S. strategic bombers also provide critical contact points to train and operate alongside our Allies and partners, while reinforcing a collective response to any global conflict.

BTF 24-2 marks the first multi-day deployment of U.S. Air Force B-1B bombers in Sweden.

Ready to jump back into the murky world of intelligence?

Alright, so we've talked about MI6 and how it gathers intelligence to aid the UK in its decision-making, but what about MI5?

Let's start with the basics.

Intelligence agencies 101: MI5

1.- What even?

Whereas MI6 is in charge of gathering intelligence overseas in order to support the government's security, defense, foreign and economic policies, according to the 1989 Security Service Act, MI5 is tasked with "the protection of national security and in particular its protection against threats such as terrorism, espionage and sabotage, the activities of agents of foreign powers, and from actions intended to overthrow or undermine parliamentary democracy by political, industrial or violent means". Such threats may come from abroad or from within.

MI5’s headquarters are found at Thames House, a Grade II (of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve it) building close to the Houses of Parliament in London. In addition to this, there are 8 regional offices in Luton, Wales, Bristol, Glasgow, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds and Birmingham, as well as another headquarters in Northern Ireland.

2.- Who is who?

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there is no M or C here.

The agency is under the authority of the Home Secretary, even though it does not form part of the Home Office.

The Director General (or DG) is the head of MI5, and is responsible for overseeing its operations and efficiency, reporting back to the Home Secretary and the Prime Minister, as well as ensuring the agency remains politically impartial.

There are 10 branches in MI5, and several entities that support its work, like the National Protective Security Authority (NPSA: providing organizations with security advice) and the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC: handles intelligence relating to international terrorism).

It is worth mentioning that in 2011, His Majesty, King Charles III became the Royal Patron of the Intelligence Services (including MI5, SIS and GCHQ). This means that he receives regular security briefings, as well as a daily ‘red box’ which includes intelligence reports, Cabinet papers, and confidential reports from Commonwealth countries.

There are over 5,000 employees in the organization and their roles include, investigations, technology, languages, surveillance, communications, information, protective security, administrations, building services and catering. As in MI6, all employees must be British, over the age of 18, and UK residents. They aren't allowed to discuss their application or job either.

3.- Operational Areas

MI5 mainly focuses on 4 areas: Terrorism, Espionage, Cyber Threats and the Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction.

Counter-Terrorism

The agency focuses on different types of terrorism:

International terrorism: Groups such as ISIL and Al Qaeda.

Northern Ireland related: Dissident republican groups.

Right Wing Terrorism (RWT)/ Left, Anarchist and Single-Issue Terrorism (LASIT): This issue took primacy in 2020 and are handled just like international terrorism.

Counter-Espionage

Seeks to stop foreign intelligence agents from obtaining information and provides security advice to companies and organizations while working closely with MI6, GCHQ, Scotland Yard, as well as security and intelligence organizations abroad.

Cyber

Focuses on hostile actors, such as criminals, "hacktivist" groups, terrorists and foreign states, which are generally well equipped for cyber espionage and computer network attacks. These actors can target the government, the military, businesses, individuals and large volumes of sensitive data.

Cyber Espionage is called Computer Network Exploitation (CNS), while the use of malicious software against cyber infrastructure is denominated Computer Network Attack (CNA).

Counter-Proliferation

The UK is obliged by several international treaties and conventions to work against the threat that weapons of mass destruction pose. MI5 focuses on regimes and states that pursue clandestine weaponization programmes. To do this, the agency works with both private institutions and government agencies such as: The Department for Business, the Innovation and Skills (BIS), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), the Ministry of Defence (MOD), His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the Home Office and the National Crime Agency (NCA).

4.- Tale as old as time...

We have talked about the “armed peace” period and how crazy the world was getting back in 1909, basically racing towards THE war everyone thought would put an end to all wars. It was back then that, fearing the German imperialistic ambitions, Great Britain established the Secret Service Bureau through Prime Minister Asquith’s Committee of Imperial Defence.

Initially, this agency handled both national and foreign affairs, under the leadership of 50 year-old Royal Navy Commander Mansfield Cumming and 36 year-old Army captain Vernon Kell.

However, down the road, our dear Commander Cumming advocated for the splitting of these branches and thus, the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) and the Security Service (MI5) were born.

Right off the bat MI5 was tasked with dealing with a massive German espionage network that, according to “official” reports, had infiltrated Britain, causing widespread paranoia. The agency barely had 16 employees back then, but that, along with Churchill’s support (Home Secretary back then) was enough to find out about the existence of a German Naval Intelligence spy network. By the end of WWI, more than half the spies sent to Britain were caught by MI5.

However, the agency barely made it through the post-war cuts, not to mention its rivalry with Scotland Yard’s Special Branch and MI6 (the line between espionage and counter-espionage was REEEEEEAAAALLY thin and they were stepping on each other's toes).

Thankfully, the Soviet Union came to save the day when one of MI5’s surveillance operations revealed that Scotland Yard had been infiltrated by Soviet intelligence. By 1931, MI5 was completely in charge of counter-subversion operations, a responsibility that the agency would continue to hold until 1991.

In the 1970s, terrorism became a priority for MI5, especially those threats coming from Northern Ireland and Qadhafi's Libya, and after the 9/11 attacks, the agency changed its modus operandi entirely.

As you can see, the agency has had a very long history, however, its existence was only officially acknowledged in 1992.

5-. A rose by any other name...

The agency, just like MI6, has taken on many names throughout the years, starting with the Home Section of the Secret Service Bureau in 1909, the Directorate of Military Operations section 5 “MO5(g)” in 1914, Military Intelligence section 5 (MI5) in 1916, the Defence Security Service in 1929, and finally, the Security Service in 1931. And although the latter has remained its official name, the agency is most commonly referred to as MI5, even by those in it.

6.- Technicalities

As it turns out, MI5 shares its funding with MI6 and the GCHQ (no wonder they’re rivals...). According to a report from the 2018/19 period, MI5 used 67% of its budget for international counter-terrorism, 20% for Northern Ireland-related terrorism, and 13% for counter-espionage, counter-proliferation and protective security.

Also worth mentioning, while MI5 agents have plenty of powers, they are not authorized to make arrests, and that is why they work with the Metropolitan Police AKA Scotland Yard, providing them with the necessary intelligence.

Recently, reforms have been made within the agency, and people now have the right to find out the kind of information that MI5 has on them, as well as ask if a deceased relative used to work for the agency. If the relative is still alive, however, MI5 definitely won’t spill the beans. So uhm... you might want to wait a little before trying to find out what that weird uncle does.

7.- Intelligence

MI5 makes use of several techniques to gather intelligence, such as:

Covert Human Intelligence Sources: Also known as “agents”, these people provide secret information during investigations and are NOT MI5 employees.

Directed surveillance: Following and/or observing targets.

Interception of communications: Monitoring emails or phone calls.

Bulk personal data: information about a large number of people used to identify a subject of interest.

Intrusive surveillance: Eavesdropping devices in homes or cars.

Equipment interference: Covertly accessing computers or other devices.

And in case you were wondering, yep, these are all legal because guess what? Individual rights can often be voided when it comes to national security.

Entering the Villain Era pt. 7

Pairing: Jake "Hangman" Seresin x Reader (f)

Summary: The one where she can dish more than he can handle. And, oh, does he deserve it.

Warnings: Swearing (as per usual), drinking (reader is of age), potentially some suggestive situations. Now we're rockin 'n rollin! Not sure where I want this to go right now....

"Mornin darlin'."

The words had barely left Jake's mouth when you spun around on your heel. You eyes narrowed and your hand dropped to the side with the folders tightly clenched between your fingers and your palm. You jaw set and you felt your aviators slide down your nose a bit.

"Don't you dare," you growled. There was a clear line of demarcation between here and what had happened last night. You were still fighting between how you were supposed to respond to Jake and the confusion was starting to eat at your usually icy demeanor. Jake quirked an eyebrow.

"What happens outside of work is not what happens here. Understood?" You saw something flicker in his eyes and his smirk lessened, but it didn't leave his face. You opened to say something more to dissuade him from trying you today, but he gave a two fingered salute and wandered off to change with a simple "ma'am."

You rolled your eyes, pushing you glasses up your nose and heading towards the office to turn on the comm system and the tracking radar- Hangman on a screen was the only way you were going to handle him together.

After a few hours of directing (and redirecting) the pilots to try and fly the course in the best way possible with optimal results, you stretched, closing another folder full of results to bring up to the main office. You spun around in your chair and were face-to-face with a smirking Maverick. You looked at him with little to no amusement, waiting impatiently for him to pipe-up whatever he was grinning about.

"You didn't tell me you had company last night..." he drawled, leaning against your doorframe. You rolled your eyes and huffed, pushing past him.

"Didn't know I needed to get approval to have a personal life," you retorted, stepping out into the hangar. You heard his laugh and your sucked your teeth, letting out an annoyed hiss. "What, Maverick?"

He shrugged, the smirk still plastered on his face and you glared at him before stalking off to the stairs. Your hand was resting on the cool metal of the door handle, about to apply pressure, when he spoke again.

"Just thought it was weird seeing Lt. Seresin's vehicle out in front of your place, that's all."

"So where were you anyway?" Phoenix interrupted, looking at Hangman across the pilot's lounge. He paused, mid-word, with Yale and shrugged.

"Why? You worried I'm gonna be home after my curfew?" He sneered with a grin, earning and exasperated eyeroll and groan from the female pilot.

"Coyote said he saw you bolt out of here after dinner- just trying to figure out what's messing with your head-"

"Yeah, you missed dollar wells at The Hard Deck." Everyone in the room turned their attentions from Phoenix and Hangman to Bob, who was perched in the corner. He was fiddling with a model of an A-10 Warthog and looked up when his comment was met with silence.

"I mean-" he stuttered, "That's what the sign said behind the bar..." Phoenix groaned and stood up, stalking her way over to Hangman and Fanboy and Payback both laughed (both with and at Bob).

"I don't want something getting in the way of this mission. It's going to be one of us up there and if your focus isn't on this mission than maybe-"

"Maybe, what?" he snarled, standing up from the chair he had be sitting in and towering over her. "Seems to me, none of this concerns you. Unless someone died and made you JTAC," his usual cockiness had returned in full force, and there was a hint of meanness underlying his words. The tension in the room changed and everyone noticed.

"Okay- so not getting into your head, was someone at least getting into your pants?" Coyote looked at Fanboy, hoping for some backup to break the tension. He was rewarded with a loud laugh as the tightness in the room dissolved. Hangman looked up at the pair, his sneer dissolving into a typical "cat caught the mouse" grin.

"I KNEW IT!" Fanboy yelled, wrapping an arm around Coyote and leaning in, "Okay, Hangman, spill. All of it." Hangman laughed, greatly enjoying the attention and the enormity of the real secret he was hiding.

"Hey now, you know I never kiss and tell..." he started, sitting back down and crossing an ankle across his knee as he fiddled with the cuticle on his thumb. Phoenix stalked away, sitting down on a barstool and leaning against the counter, clearly still annoyed.

"But you do fuck and brag," she countered, desperately trying to persuade herself that her interest wasn't piqued in Hangman's new conquest. Hangman looked at the ceiling and sighed.

"Exactly, birdbrain, I don't kiss and tell. So you're safe to assume it didn't get beyond that."

The trio of male pilots looked at each other in disbelief, confused at how Hangman's cockiness had returned from-a makeout session with some mystery woman? That certainly wasn't his style. The three mumbled a few incoherent sentences and then started back towards the foosball table, unsure of what had gotten into their teammate.

You knew he was mad about Maverick selecting Rooster as his wingman. He had been actively avoiding you since the announcement of him and Phoenix and Bob being the leads on the mission. 'Runner-up back-up squad' was not something Hangman was enjoying winning right now and you knew that.

You continued your briefings with the A-team, going over expectations and protocol, proving how much you had learned about all their dynamics and decisions. Most surprised was Maverick, who hadn't considered that you had been analyzing and anticipating everything he had done in the simulations and in real life.

As the crew exited out of the office, you checked your watching and looked at the setting sun, knowing tomorrow was the day everyone shipped off to the aircraft carrier. You were glad to have already packed and made your way out to your car, quickly noting the stares of a few of the reserve team members attempting to sneak glances at you as you left for the day.

"See you tomorrow, boys," you called over your shoulder, laughing to yourself as you heard them curse and one going as far to say "how the FUCK did she see us?!"

You walked across the tarmac on the ship and sighed, happy to be back on the water, but incredibly restless with the mission. You knew your team was ready, but they didn't know it themselves. You took your seat at the flight deck, headset and mic on, notes and battle plans to your right, a large mug of coffee on your left.

As you heard the aviators check in from their cockpits, you looked to your controller for the a-okay. When he gave you a thumbs up, you hit a button, forcing on a bright red light that assaulted your eyes.

"We are go. Let's get these motherfuckers, shall we?" You heard Maverick laugh over the radio and you smirked as a few admirals and other officials nearby turned to look at you. "We are wheels up, Maverick." You gave a thumbs up to the grounds crew leader below and he saluted up, giving a signal to Maverick as he took off from the ship.

The same thing happened twice more. "Rooster, we are go. Wheels up, kiddo." "Phoenix and Bob, wheels up, go blow something up." You barely remembered what you said beyond the initial checks, watching out the window at the F-18s were launched into the sky. You looked over to the screens, watching the beacons blink over and over as the trio neared their drop zone.

You took in a shaky breath, looking at Admiral Simpson who looked more annoyed than anything. Your eyes darted over to Hondo who had been leaning against the doorframe just out of your view until this moment. He shook his head and then gave you a quick upwards nod. You hit the button again.

"This is a go for backup-one. Hangman, this is a go," you got the thumbs up, "we are wheels up, Hangman." You refused to look at either of the admirals now flanking your shoulders as you waited for Hangman's confirmation. When Bates was about to speak, your headset crackled as you heard a jet engine start up outside the window.

"Yes, ma'am. Backup one is a go." You heard a hitch in his voice and you paused, knowing he was extactic to go, but also cautious of what he was going to find. You answered back to the unasked question in his voice.

"Got you all the way in, Hangman. You know what to do-" as you watched his plane launch, you saw Bob and Phoenix nearing back to the aircraft. As she communicated with the flight deck, your heart suddenly stopped when you saw Roosters beacon pop up on the radar in front of you. Then Maverick's appeared out of thin air. You motioned to Hondo to look at the screen. He gave you an incredulous look and shook his head with a small laugh.

"Hangman, take a look at your radar," you heard Phoenix say over the waves. When he didn't respond right away, you decided to jump in and do your job.

"Go bring those boys home, Lieutenant," you commanded, glad that Jake was already in the air and on target to help with some bogeys that had caught onto whatever Maverick and Rooster were flying.

"Yes ma'am!" came the enthusiastic reply. "Anything for you."

The example I have shipped with 3 magazines, 2 straight body magazines and 1 curved magazine. Mine also came with the sb tactical brace that most firearms of this style come with. As a little bonus the Stribogs come with a spare set of the polymer flip up sights and it all ships in a pretty nice hard case.

Out of the box it is a lot smaller than I had expected. (That’s what she said) It has a solid weight of 5lbs 1oz unloaded on the 8” barrel model. There is now a 5” barrel model available along with models that accept Glock magazines. There are 3 main models of stribog to look for, the original is the sp9a1 which a direct blow back with a reciprocating charging handle. Shortly after that came the sp9a1 gen 2 which is also a direct blowback model but with a non reciprocating charging handle. Which to me is a major plus. Then that leads us to the sp9a3 which is grand powers take on a roller delayed action. I am honestly not super knowledgeable or experienced with the sp9a3 considering I’ve never even seen one in person. All of the models ship with lower receivers that have fixed non changeable grips and take the proprietary stribog magazine. As long as I’m understanding this correctly, the neat thing is that the serialized part is the upper receiver portion. Therefore you could easily change out the lower to one of the many aftermarket options available that better suits you.

First shots- The first time I took the stribog out I was not exactly thrill with how it went. I had two failure to feeds in the first magazine. Then when I removed the magazine to clear the malfunctions the entire magazine shot the remaining rounds out. After two or three more times of picking about 28 rounds out of the snow I realized that the straight body magazines that they ship with these are absolute junk. The curved magazine that they send however is awesome. The curved magazines look better, seem to be made better, and have ran 100% flawlessly.

So after the initial hiccup the first time shooting it I have really grown to love this firearm. Since owning it I have added a couple small upgrades from HB industries to it including their short stroke buffer kit and their mini comp thread protector. I have since put a couple thousand rounds through it with nothing but good times and good things to say about it.

Grand Power has since released the 5” barrel models and the models that accept Glock magazines. Aftermarket support for the stribog seems to be pretty good with offerings from companies like HB industries, Jtac industries, and Arms republic. There are plenty of parts available online like handguard extensions, lower receivers that take different magazines, triggers, and grips.

I think the future is bright for the little stribog and I am excited to see what comes next for it. In the future I may try to get ahold of a sp9a3 to check out. In the meantime if you are interested in picking up a stribog for yourself then I would highly recommend it. That being said make sure you pick up a few curved magazines that way you can avoid the entire first situation I had.

I haven’t seen that many SPARTAN medics so I just made Lifeline the unique one. Archer has taken shots that would make Linda blush but no one knows of it because classified. Techie decided to introduce cyber warfare to the Covies. I also put the roles of these guys according to the SAS 4-5 man patrol designations. The unique thing that is practiced is that each member is a master of one field, very good at another, and gets a basic level of knowledge on the rest. This way, the patrol is not crippled when the specialist is wounded or killed.

Honestly, Archer being a SPARTAN-II is the only way I can see them being that good a sniper.

USAF F-16 fighters train in Bosnia on alert against "separatist activity"

Two U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons conducted bilateral air-to-ground training with joint terminal attack controllers (JTACs) from the U.S. Special Operations Command in Europe and the Bosnia and Herzegovina Armed Forces JTACs near Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on January 8, 2024.

This bilateral formation is an example of advanced cooperation between the military that contributes to peace and security in the Western Balkans and throughout Europe. It is also a show of force aimed at deterring the "separatist activity" of Bosnian Serbs that is in disagreement with the U.S.-mediated peace agreements, the U.S. government said.

The exercise aimed to support America's commitment to Bosnia's territorial integrity, amid growing tensions inflamed by Bosnian Serb nationalist leader Milorad Dodik, whom Russia supports.

January 9 is celebrated as Republika Srpska Day by Bosnian Serbs and marks the anniversary of the declaration of independence that started the conflict in Bosnia in 1992, which killed more than 100,000 people and led to ethnic cleansing and the massacre of civilians.

“Joint military events like this are a demonstration of the U.S.' lasting partnership with the Bosnia and Herzegovina Armed Forces,” said U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General Steven L. Basham, deputy commander of the U.S. European Command.

"American support for the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina is inflexible, forged over years of close cooperation. For twenty years, the Armed Forces of our two countries maintained a remarkable and robust military relationship between the military," added Basham. "The United States continues to provide assistance that will help its armed forces modernize and become a contributor to security, both regionally and globally.”

The training was part of the routine efforts of U.S. forces to exchange tactics, techniques and procedures with the forces of partner countries.

The mission of the F-16 fighters assigned to the 31ª Fighter Wing of Aviano Air Base, Italy, was supported by a KC-135 Stratotanker from the 100ª Air Refueling Wing, from the RAF Base in Mildenhall, United Kingdom, which provided air refueling for the F-16s and contributed to fulfilling all training objectives.

The U.S. Department of Defense and the Bosnian and Herzegovina Armed Forces share a common goal of contributing to continued stability in the region and are natural partners in their global commitment to global security.

In the 1990s, NATO intervened with military force, first through the beginning of Operation Deny Flight, which aimed to impose a United Nations no-fly zone during the conflict in the Balkans, and later Operation Deliberate Force, an air campaign against the Bosnian Serbian Army. In 1995, the US mediated the Dayton Agreements, agreed at Wright-Patterson Air Base, Ohio, with Republika Srpska, of a Serbian majority, and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, of Bosnian and Croatian majority, agreeing to peace as a single state.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned in November that the alliance was “concerned about secessionist and divisionist rhetoric, as well as evil foreign interference, including Russia”.

After the celebration of Republika Srpska Day on January 9, the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo condemned the actions.

“The United States has acted to address anti-Dayton actions like this in the past and will not hesitate to do so again in the future,” the U.S. Embassy said in a statement on January 9.

EUCOM said that the Air Force exercise held on January 8 aimed to strengthen peace in the Balkans.
