"It is a surprising trajectory for us to be welcomed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 1991 four people in Los Angeles formed a musical group to stand where sound and solidarity intersect. We called ourselves Rage Against the Machine.
A band who is as well known for our albums as we are for our fierce opposition to the US war machine, white supremacy and exploitation
A band whose songs drove alternative radio to new heights while right wing media companies tried to purge every song we ever wrote from the airwaves
A band who shut down the NY Stock Exchange for the first time in its history
A band who was targeted by police organizations who attempted to ban us from sold out arenas for raising our voices to free Mumia Abu Jamal, Leonard Peltier and other political prisoners
A band who sued the US State Department for their fascist practice of using our music to torture innocent men in Guantanamo Bay
A band who wrote rebel songs in an abandoned, industrial warehouse in the valley that would later dethrone Simon Cowell ’s X Factor pop monopoly to occupy the number 1 spot on the UK charts and have the most downloaded song in UK history
A band who funded and organized delegations to stand with Mexican rebel Zapatista communities to expose the Mexican government’s war on indigenous people
A band whose experimentation in fusing punk, rock and hip hop became a genre of its own
Many thanks to the Hall of Fame for recognizing the music and the mission of Rage Against the Machine. We are grateful to all of the passionate fans, the many talented co-conspirators we’ve worked with and all the activists, organizers, rebels and revolutionaries past, present and future who have inspired our art."
-Brad, Tim, Tom & Zack
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Official Ballot Bio
The greatest rock & roll is the voice of change, and Rage Against the Machine shook the foundations of the status quo – lyrically, sonically, and philosophically. The band mixed hip-hop, punk, metal, funk, and rock in an entirely new way. They took aim at oppressive systems of power – cultural, political, and economic – and set a new standard for how to ignite a revolution through the power of music.
Formed in 1991, the Los Angeles quartet’s self-titled 1992 debut and 1996’s Evil Empire ushered rap-rock into the mainstream and established Rage Against the Machine as a powerful force that harnessed strength from defying sonic boundaries. Zack de la Rocha’s stinging, hip-hop-inspired vocals drew on his days fronting a hardcore band. The rhythm section of bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk heightened the urgency of de la Rocha’s delivery with deep, heavy grooves grounded by a pummeling backbeat – no rhythm section could maximize volume while staying in the pocket more skillfully. Guitarist Tom Morello took the rap-rock hybridization further than contemporary groups. He used pedals, toggle switches, and alternative tunings to incorporate effects normally created by hip-hop turntables, samplers, and synthesizers into the language of heavy metal through Rage’s driving riffs and iconic solos.
Rage Against the Machine were part of a musical tradition indebted to the MC5, the Clash, and Public Enemy. While plenty of 1990s rock bands supported social justice issues, Rage Against the Machine’s rebellious politics stood head and shoulders above. Onstage and off, the band members gave a voice to the powerless, calling out local and global inequalities and railing against censorship, corporate cronyism, and government overreach. Their lyrics were smart and pointed; “Freedom” highlighted the plight of Leonard Peltier, an imprisoned Native American leader, while “People of the Sun” showed solidarity with tyrannized Mexican citizens. Even today, their lyrics remain relevant. “Killing in the Name,” a stark indictment of racism and police brutality, still resonates deeply in cities across America. Rage Against the Machine forged brazen protest music for the modern world.
Selected discography:
“Killing in the Name,” “Bullet in the Head,” “Bombtrack,” Rage Against the Machine(1992)
• “Bulls on Parade,” “People of the Sun,” Evil Empire (1996)
• “Guerrilla Radio,” “Sleep Now in the Fire,” “Testify” The Battle of Los Angeles (1999)
• “The Ghost of Tom Joad,” “Renegades of Funk,” Renegades (2000)

The ultimate betrayal to me as an indigenous woman is watching indigenous activists, friends, family, people I look up to, praising Leonard Peltier when he assisted in the murder of an indigenous woman. All those native men who go "women are sacred" every two seconds and then turn around demanding the release of Leonard tells me that they don't actually care about our safety. Fuck most of AIM, fuck Leonard, make him tell the truth about Anna Mae Aquash so she can have justice.

A coalition of mostly House and Senate Democrats penned a letter to President Biden on Friday urging him to grant clemency to Leonard Peltier, a Native American activist convicted in the 1970s of fatally shooting two FBI agents at point-blank range. The Democrats – led by House Natural Resources Committee ranking member Raul Grijalva, D-Ariz., and joined by Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. – cast doubt on the circumstances under which Peltier was found guilty in 1977 of killing the two agents two years prior. The letter was sent ahead of Indigenous People's Day on Oct. 9. One House Republican has also signed on to the letter."As Members of Congress, we sign this letter with a deep commitment to the crucial role we play in upholding justice for all Americans – and to also hold our government accountable when we see a case of injustice, as demonstrated by the long incarceration of Leonard Peltier," the lawmakers wrote to Biden. " We stand with the Tribal Nations of the United States, Indigenous voices worldwide, and leading voices on human rights and criminal justice around the globe in support of Mr. Peltier’s release.""Over the course of his incarceration, particularly in recent years, key figures involved in Mr. Peltier’s prosecution have stepped forward to underscore the constitutional violations and prosecutorial misconduct that took place during the investigation and trial that led to his conviction," the letter continued.NEW YORK DEM'S CAPITOL HILL FIRE ALARM INCIDENT REFERRED TO FEDS FOR CHARGES SIMILAR TO JAN. 6 RIOTERSRep. Raul Grijalva led a coalition of 33 lawmakers, including Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, in sending the letter to President Biden on Friday. The Democratic lawmakers also noted in their letter to President Biden that Peltier is 79 years old, is suffering from numerous health issues, has been imprisoned for nearly five decades, and is currently being held in a high-security prison in Florida.READ ON THE FOX NEWS APPIn 1977, after a 25-day trial, Peltier was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to two consecutive life sentences of murdering FBI Special Agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams during a shootout in June 1975 at Jumping Bull Ranch located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.CONSERVATIVES CHEER BIDEN OMB DIRECTOR WARNING GOP CUTS COULD PURGE THOUSANDS OF FBI, ATF AGENTS: 'GOOD START'The two agents entered the reservation to arrest an individual wanted for burglary before they engaged in the shootout with several individuals, including Peltier. The agents were wounded by gunfire before they were ultimately murdered, the court found, by Peltier at point-blank range. Peltier fled after the shooting to Canada, where he was captured and extradited back to America to stand trial. While he, Democrats and various activist organizations have repeatedly claimed the trial was marked by lack of sufficient evidence proving he killed the agents, Peltier's conviction has been upheld several times on appeal, even after making its way to the U.S. Supreme Court on two occasions, in 1979 and 2004. The U.S. Parole Commission rejected Peltier's request for parole in 2009.Leonard Peltier is led across the Oakalla prison exercise yard to a waiting helicopter after being deported from Canada to face charges of murdering two FBI agents."We in the Federal Bureau of Investigation vehemently oppose granting Mr. Peltier parole," former FBI Executive Assistant Director Thomas Harrington remarked in a statement during the parole proceedings."The intentional and vicious attack by Mr. Peltier was not simply a blatant attack on two FBI special agents; it was an attack on law enforcement as a whole – an attack on the rule of law," Harrington said. "The inevitable haziness brought on by the passage of time does not diminish the brutality of the crimes or the lifelong torment to the surviving families.
"And the FBI Agents Association (FBIAA), a professional association that mainly represents active FBI special agents, has repeatedly argued against granting Peltier clemency. As part of that effort, the group penned a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland in late 2021, stating the facts of the case and expressing concern that advocates are "working to mislead the public, the Department of Justice, and the White House.""The FBI Agents Association strongly opposed executive clemency for Leonard Peltier," FBIAA President Natalie Bara told Fox News Digital in a statement Friday. "Activists sympathetic to Peltier continue to mislead elected officials and the public in order to secure an early release for this unremorseful murderer of FBI Special Agents Jack Coler and Ronald Williams.""FBIAA will continue to counter these efforts, and we stand with the entire FBI family in our determination to ensure that Peltier serves his full sentence."In addition to Grijalva, Jayapal, Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders, Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib, Ted Lieu, Jamaal Bowman, Cori Bush and Ilhan Omar also signed the letter. A single Republican, Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, has also signed the letter. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.Original article source: Democrats call on Biden to release Leonard Peltier, activist who fatally shot two FBI agents

Nick Estes is a historian and a writer. Author of two books “Our History is the Future,” and “Red Nation Rising.” He is part of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe. He has a strong relationship with multiculturalism due to his activism for Indigenous rights. He founded “The Red Nation” which is a podcast heavily focused on Indigenous history, politics, a culture all coming from the basis of the left’s perspective. In this podcast (and in his other works) he challenges several dominant cultural narratives that often exclude indigenous voices, beliefs, and cultures. He strives to challenge these narratives that have often caused prejudice and stereotypes to indigenous communities and to bring light to more accurate and respectful depictions often left out. The four key areas of struggle Estes claims exist for Natives within the realms of colonialism are indigeneity, liberation, resistance, and coalition. Indigeneity is a “political condition that challenges the existence and domination of colonial nation-states.” Liberation resembles the restructuring and transformation he believes Natives are owed. Resistance stands for the battle Natives have had against colonialism for centuries. Coalition resembles community engagement in these struggles.[i]

“Letter from Leonard Peltier.” 2023. The Red Nation. https://therednation.org/blog/. Accessed July 20, 2023.
Estes quotes “We seek to not just challenge power, but to build power.” This statement reminds me of Sojourner Truth’s “I Sell the Shadow to Support the Substance.” Both quotes resemble a marginalized culture that seeks to gain recognition and power, not just be victims of it. Estes generates a conversation regarding race, ethnicity, and culture because he sees and portrays himself on the frontlines of a battle that his Native race and culture has faced for centuries. His work attempts to promote the importance of Indigenous voices regarding social justice, climate issues, colonialization and the ongoing struggles faced that stem from these issues. He wants to create cooperation between both Indigenous folks and multicultural societies that have formed here in America at large. He believes every culture’s voice is a staple that must be heard and understood. He believes that contemporary issues faced here today should include indigenous people’s voices in solving these problems. Ultimately, Estes is a powerful voice representing a population that may have been marginalized in certain ways over Americas history and he seeks to bridge those gaps that have been long left open.[ii]

I was listening to the news today and heard about Leonard Peltier. He has been a prisoner for 46 years for a crime he didn’t commit while defending the Olga Lakota Nation. Leonard is a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians.
“Three men were indicted on charges of murder of the FBI agents. Two of the defendants, Bob Robideau and Dino Butler, were exonerated by an all-white jury on the grounds of self defense. But the third person accused, Leonard Peltier, had sought refuge in Canada and wasn’t tried at the same time. The FBI then decided he would pay the price for all three men, despite his innocence.’
There’s a petition to release him from imprisonment after nearly half a century ofrom his friends, family, and loved ones.
There is a also a walk of 1,103 miles from Minneapolis to DC to raise awareness on behalf of Leonard Peltier that lasted multiple months and has been completed today
The walk and prayer for Elder Peltier has been heartfelt, heavy and healing,” Walk to Justice organizer Rachel Thunder told Native News Online. “Our walkers are out every day at 5 a.m. to make sure the 20-plus miles are covered to get this message to Washington D.C., to free Leonard Peltier.” - Sept 29, 22
We just walked for 1,103 miles for our elder Leonard Peltier,” walk organizer Rachel Thunder said at Sunday’s rally. “We just marched 1,103 miles for our people, for justice for our people. When Leonard is free, we are all free.”
Leonard Peltier is the United States’ longest serving Indigenous political prisoner,” Dr. Nick Estes told Native News Online at Sunday’s rally. “The lawyers who actually put him in jail are here marching with us today, demanding that lawmakers and President Biden take action. Forty-seven years has been too long.”
I’ve just learned about this and definitely want to read and learn more, I thought I’d put these up because it’s something everyone should know. Especially as we draw closer to “thanksgiving” non indigenous inhabitants of Turtle must remind themselves not only do we live stolen land but that settler colonialism, genocide, and attacks on Indigenous sovereignty is a active part of our daily life, enshrined and enforced in government, laws, and policies.
ICWA is at risk too right now no child should be taken from their community and no adult should be in jail for defending their land, water, and communities

Leonard Peltier has been in prison for 44 years for a crime he says he didn’t commit.
His trial was riddled with misconduct that would never hold up in a U.S. court today. Prosecutors hid key evidence. The FBI threatened and coerced witnesses into lying. A juror admitted she was biased against Peltier’s race on the second day of the trial, but was allowed to stay on anyway.
There was never proof that he murdered two FBI agents during that 1975 shoot-out on Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. But the FBI needed someone to take the fall. The agency had just lost two agents, and Peltier’s co-defendants were acquitted based on self-defense. This was happening as the FBI was fueling tensions on the reservation as part of a covert campaign to suppress the activities of the American Indian Movement, or AIM, a grassroots group of activists focused on drawing attention to federal treaty rights violations, discrimination and police brutality targeting Native Americans.
Peltier, an AIM member, was there that day. So based entirely on testimony from people who had been threatened and intimidated by the FBI, and operating within a 1970s-era criminal justice system tilted in favor of the U.S. government and against Indigenous rights activists like Peltier, the U.S. Attorney’s Office successfully charged him with murder.
By all appearances, the FBI wants Peltier to die in prison while serving two life sentences.
