Meta: Mac's Army Service Uniform
I've been meaning to post this for a while, and I was finally able to finish up the last bit of research. I did a deep dive into Mac's Army Service Uniform because I was super curious what it would say about his Army service. These observations are based on screenshots from S05E05 Jack + Kinematics + Safe Cracker + MgKNO3 + GTO.

Beret

The distinctive unit insignia on his beret is for the 1st Armored Division.  The 1st Armored Division is an active unit of the US Army located in Fort Bliss, Texas. Known as the “Old Ironsides” and consists of over 17,000 soldiers. Source  More info

Unit award: Army Meritorious Unit Commendation.  It is awarded "to units for exceptionally meritorious conduct in performance of outstanding services for at least six continuous months during the period of military operations against an armed enemy occurring on or after 1 January 1944".  Source
Identification badge is the same as his distinctive unit insignia for the 1st Armored Division.  (Note: This appears to be in the wrong spot based on the graphics I found of how the uniform insignia, badges, and ribbons should be worn.)

Left Side of Coat
Combat Badge: Combat Infantryman Badge.  It is awarded for "performing duties while personally present and under fire while serving in an assigned infantry or Special Forces capacity, in a unit of brigade, regimental, or smaller size, engaged in active ground combat".  Source
Ribbons:
Army Service.  It is "awarded to all members of the Regular (Active) Army, and Army National Guard and United States Army Reserve in an active reserve status, for successful completion of initial-entry training, which for officers is considered to be successful completion of their basic/orientation or higher-level course". Source
National Defense Service.  It is awarded for "military service during periods of national emergency or any other periods designated by the Secretary of Defense". Source
Global War on Terrorism Service.  It is awarded for "support of operations to counter terrorism, whether stationed in the United States or overseas". Source
Skills Badge: Expert Marksmanship Source (Note: Unfortunately, there's not a clear enough shot of the clasp to see what weapon he's an expert marksman with.)

If anything is incorrect, please let me know, and I will update this post.
I have two observations about Mac's uniform. The first is that I was super excited that Mac seemed to have done his training in Fort Bliss, Texas, but the 1st Armored Division was moved to Texas on May 13, 2011, and we know that Mac and Jack met in 2011 after Mac had been in the Army for a couple of years. (Their first DXS mission was in March 2012.). Prior to Fort Bliss, the 1st Armored Division was based in Germany, if I understand the Wikipedia article correctly.
Secondly, Mac is an expert marksman! It's just very interesting given his dislike of guns. It makes sense that he would have trained with and handled firearms in the Army, but I didn't expect him to be so good with a gun.

I'm being forced to watch 5x05 by other people in this household and OMG the story holds up even less on rewatch. Just... WHYyyyyyyyy. This is such a crap story. Could they not have worked extra hard to make a story that at least made more SENSE?
Like I'm sorry, but the connection between the Eye of Horus and the wall safe is... nonexistant. NOBODy would've made that connection. That's just wishful thinking by whoever wrote this thing. And the photo of Kovac? Whaaattt noooo Jack recognized that photo in season 3. If that was a stock photo wouldn't we have found out like 2 seasonsa go? And Vitez is a crap badguy. I hate her, an not because she's evil, but mostly because she's such a weak character with no actual reason for her apparently years-long deeply-rooted plots.

Now that I've had a bit more time to reflect on the new episode, I think I'm ready to share some of my thoughts about it and where I'd like to see the show go from here.
First off, I love the episode. I actually encourage anyone who stopped watching the show after Jack left to watch it. It's a beautiful tribute to his character, and in my opinion, the writers, actors, and director handled it so well.
I'll be the first to say that I've not always been impressed with the way that the writers have handled Jack's character in the past (I felt they did a pretty good job of mentioning him in S3, but not mentioning him in S4 felt entirely unrealistic). But the tone, the mood, the characters' reactions, the respect, straight out of the gate were perfect in this episode. It's so much better than the show runners pretending that Jack had never existed. It hurt, but I felt such a sense of validation seeing the other characters talk about him again, reminisce about him, and mourn him. It was cathartic in many ways and offered closure I've needed so badly since Eads left the show.
I realize that some people have no interest in this kind of closure and want to live in hope, and I absolutely understand and respect this. But I think a really masterful stroke was accomplished by the writers here, one that offers closure to those of us who wanted a proper end to Jack's storyline, and also that offers hope to those who want to see him come back. After all, there are some glaring factors that could indicate that Jack might yet be alive and could even return if Eads ever made the decision to do so: We never actually see the body, we know that "Kovac" faked her death and Jack knew he was in danger so it stands to reason that he could have done the same, and of course, the mention of the manniversary could have actually been referring to him faking his own death during their last one, a clue that he's actually alive and in hiding.
Either way, whether Eads will ever decide to come back or not, the show has offered an out to those who do not want to believe Jack is dead. It hints that he might still be alive and on the run, and there is nothing wrong with believing that is the case. In a sense, they've made it where in canon Jack is simultaneously alive and dead at the same time (Schrodinger's Jack if you will). And I think that's the best move they could have made in this case.
I also am a hurt/comfort junkie, and Mac is my favorite character, so I absolutely enjoyed the raw emotions that he and the others experience. Time will tell if the writers will continue to afford Jack and the situation the proper and realistic attention they deserve, but going forward, I hope to see a number of things:
I want to see Mac struggle to come to terms with this newest and most devestating loss. The breakdown in the bathroom was a good start. I want more. I want him to barely hold it together, perhaps to grow paranoid or reckless after loss after loss, with this one the straw that broke the proverbial camel's back. I want to see him and Riley turn to each other for comfort and companionship. Whether or not they get together, I want Riley to help Mac and Mac to help Riley.
I want Desi to realize that her approach to Mac and his emotions is toxic. I want her to find a new way to deal with loss than her solution she mentions to Riley - "beer."
I want Jack mentioned and referenced more. I want his death to leave a shadow over the team. I want Matty to sometimes have a faraway look in her eyes and we all know exactly who she's thinking about.
I want Jack to be remembered, honored, respected, and treated like an actual character again. Not that the entire show has to stop and be about missing him, but I want to feel like his memory still exists in this universe.
If possible, I'd love for him to come back, to actually be faking his own death. But if not, I will move on as the characters do. Despite its faults, I still love this show and its characters and will keep watching no matter what. I will also remember and urge others to do the same.
Also, it's important to remember that even though the writers' approach has sometimes been far from perfect, the show runners didn't make Eads leave. The writers didn't write him out of the show because they wanted him gone. Eads made his own decision to leave, and I respect that. The writers have done their best with what they have, and I applaud them for keeping the show going for two and a half seasons after one of the most popular characters left. That's not an easy feat.
And I really, really hope that this show will get many more seasons to come.

to continue the theme of “meg cries while watching MacGyver”, I burst into tears four separate times watching 5x05
given all of the MacRiley hugs in prior episodes it feels deliberate that during this grief they didn’t hug ONCE, especially after everything about last episode
i’m just saying

The beginning was HEARTBREAKING. I knew Riley would go back to pizza and skee-ball, and the story she told about Jack was so bittersweet as was the rest of the team’s. The hidden safe in a wall and Interpol bursting in was pretty cool, and the plot twist with Tibor knowing Jack was hilarious. The revelation that Kovac was still alive turned the plot in a new direction. Kidnapping someone is pretty par for the course, but them getting taken out by a sniper isn’t so much. Riley doing forensics was awesome, and you could tell how determined she was to catch Kovac. Bozer protecting Riley was really sweet, and I honestly thought he was going to get shot closer to center mass, so at least he didn’t (getting shot still sucks though, needless to say). Riley taking care of Bozer was also really sweet. The team taking inspiration from Jack to save the day was a great homage, and Riley recording the confession was awesome. Russ’ outburst about ruining his carpet was very expected, and Riley getting the GTO made me want to cry. I’m taking the ‘no body, no proof’ approach, and I’m going to keep believing he’s alive until we get conclusive proof to the contrary.

I am not ready in the slightest to be told Jack died in tonight’s episode of MacGyver. Why?! They could have just left him written out. Why do this?! 😩💔🤦🏻‍♀️ I have a small shred of hope that maybe he needed to fake his death, but I’m not holding my breath on that option.
