I get mentally exhausted whenever I'm forced to think of Stan Lee for any amount of time so I was really dreading reading the chapter of Ditko Shrugged that concerned the creation of Spider-Man but I ended up being pleasantly surprised that author David Curie ended up debunking many of Lee's claims and arrived to the conclusion that Lee never gave Kirby or Ditko a "brief synopsis" to work from. History, for better and for worse, seems to look like it will be kind to Steve Ditko, we've come a long way since Blake Bell's otherwise impressive work Strange and Stranger: The Worlds of Steve Ditko, that mentioned that Lee *did* give Ditko a plot synopsis to work from without any accompanying evidence beyond "Lee and Marvel's lawyers said that happened."
Some brief notes however;
Tumblr media
Tom Scioli's Jack Kirby: The Epic Life of The King of Comics properly states that Kirby was the person that introduced the concept of Spider-Man (or, Spiderman, sans hyphen), with the art in the third panel being Night Stalker, though I've not seen any Night Stalker art by Kirby where the character had the web gun. Scioli's work crams in an amazing amount of detail but the fact that Ditko was assigned to start Spider-Man over from scratch after noticing that Kirby's version resembled The Fly too much is completely glossed over for space reasons I assume, keeping in mind that Kirby was so busy in the 1960's that the addressing of Spider-Man's creation has to share the page with that of Iron Man and The X-Men. Curie mentions this specifically but doesn't draw any specific conclusions as to who came up with the "idea" of Spider-Man, likely due to the fact that it is a rabbit hole and for all intent and purpose doesn't really matter in the context that the character as published is a co-creation of Ditko and Lee alone.
Both books however present the impetus for Spider-Man's creation as originating from a source other than Kirby, Scioli mentions that Martin Goodman wanted to continue expanding the superhero line and Currie more or less credits Lee with at least coming up with the name "Spiderman" if nothing else. The truth as it where seems to be an ongoing process of building up (or exposing) after decades of falsehoods.

Episode 796: Tom Scioli on I AM STAN LEE and STAR WARRIORS
Today's show brings another returning guest: a cartoonist so well-known for being in tune with the vibe of Jack Kirby in his own work that when he published his Kirby biography Jack Kirby: The Epic Life of the King of Comics in 2020, there's no doubt a large portion of the readership wondered what had taken him so long.
The delay was most likely due to the fact he was busy making a name for himself with such projects in the comics mainstream and independent arenas as The Myth of 8-Opus, G0dland, Transformers vs GI Joe, American Barbarian, Go-Bots, and many more. He also takes the time to not only be the fifth-Beatle-esque third Cartoonist Kayfaber on that popular YouTube channel, but co-host his own Total Recall Show with Matt Zeoli. But today, Tom Scioli is here to talk with Greg about a new collaboration between himself and The King (separated by 80-ish years or so) as well as his new biography on the other half of the Kirby-Lee partnership: I am Stan: The Graphic Biography of the Legendary Stan Lee.

Underrated: Jack Kirby: The Epic Life of the King of Comics by Tom Scioli
Underrated: Jack Kirby: The Epic Life of the King of Comics by Tom Scioli
This is a column that focuses on something or some things from the comic book sphere of influence that may not get the credit and recognition it deserves. Whether that’s a list of comic book movies, ongoing comics, or a set of stories featuring a certain character. The columns may take the form of a bullet pointed list, or a slightly longer thinkpiece – there’s really no formula for this other…

#JackedKirby - You remember that time the FF protected the Moon Landing??? 🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓🌔 Being that we just passed the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 manned moon landing (July 16th 1969) I thought it would be cool to look back at the time Stan and Jack portrayed the Marvel version of that event... and how the First Family helped NASA accomplish the epic task!!! 🌕🌖🌗🌘🌒🌑🌓🌔 Fantastic Four #Issue98 came out in May of 1970 and is near the tail end of “The Run”, Jack and Stan’s epic 102 Issue journey (plus annuals!) together on the FF. The issue features Reed getting a cryptic transmission from space about an impeding threat... and it happens to coincide with the upcoming moon mission!!!! This is an obvious “ripper from the headlines” story and the cover (pic 1) makes sure to highlight it in the story title “Doomsday on the Moon!!!” 🌕🌖🌗🌘🌒🌑🌓🌔 Kree Sentry #459 wants the Apollo mission to fail so he plan on sabotaging it... but not if the FF can stop it!!! Ben, Reed And Johnny (sans Sue) spring into action after drawing conclusions that Reed’s message is tied to the upcoming space mission... 🌕🌖🌗🌘🌒🌓🌔 I also really love the use of actual newspaper headlines in the story to highlight a real life event taking place in the 616 universe... Pics 2/3/4 all show the characters reading about the Apollo Mission and utilizing this info to further the story. Another cool twist is that the heroes arrive home just in time to see Neil Armstrong’s epic first steps on the moon and hear his “one small step for man... one giant leap for mankind” declaration with Jack recreated to close out the issue (pics 5/6). Done perfectly... historically accurate and wonderfully rendered by The King!!! 🌕🌖🌗🌘🌑🌘🌒🌓🌔 #JackKirby #Kirby #KingKirby #FF #FantasticFour #Kree #MoonLanding #NeilArmstrong #BuzzAldrin #Marvel #Comic #Comics #ComicBook #ComicBooks #70sComics #ComicsOfThe70s #IGcomics #ComicsOfIG #50thanniversary #MoonLanding https://www.instagram.com/p/B0OjFq-Bf1k/?igshid=1i6jzy5gwpdr1
