Zitiron- a creature with the bottom half of a fish and the top half of a knight.

The zitiron only shows up in three sources that I can find- the Ortus Sanitatis (published in Germany 1491, author unknown), Van der Naturen Bloeme (early 14th c) by Flemish poet Jacob van Maerlant, and De natura rerum (1244 CE) by Flemish writer Thomas of Cantimpré. Van der Naturen Bloeme is actually just a Dutch translation of the Latin De natura rerum, so technically there's only two original sources. The only reason I mention both is that the original De natura rerum- which is sourced from a large number of works by philosophers and writers such as Aristotle, Pliny the Elder, St. Ambrose, Jacques de Vitry, and too many others to explore them all as original sources- doesn't have any illustrations and is in Latin, which I can't read, making it a personally useless source. But Van der Naturen Bloeme does have illustrations- the third image in this post is Jacob van Maerlant's interpretation of the zitiron I assume to be outlined in De natura rerum.

The only other original place that a zitiron can be found, according to the internet, is in the Ortus Sanitatis, a Latin natural history encyclopedia with no known author published in 1491 in Mainz, Germany. It has illustrations, the second image in this post is the author's interpretation. But again, I can't read Latin and it's hard to read the stylized text to put into google translate.

There is almost no information about the zitiron online, which is a shame because it's a really interesting figure. If you can read Latin or medieval Dutch I would LOVE to work together to place the origin of this mythological creature and learn more about it!

For the drawing, I wanted to honor Jacob van Maerlant and Thomas of Cantimpré's Flemish heritage. The helmet, chainmail, shield, and goedendag on the zitiron are representative of what the Flemish forces wore and used at the Battle of the Golden Spurs, a 1302 victory of the French that is a source of pride and celebrated every July 11th by the Flemish today.

TLDR: The zitiron is a little known creature from the Middle Ages or perhaps antiquity, with the bottom half of a fish and the top half of a knight. My drawing is inspired by the Flemish culture of two of the only writers to leave any information about the zitiron.

If you've got the time and can read Latin, could you take a look at the two Latin texts I mentioned? For the Ortus Sanitatis, I was able to flip through the whole thing and find the page that has the info on zitirons. It's on page 730 here- (x). But for De natura rerum, which you can access here (x), I have no idea where it could be. There's a translation project for it ongoing through Kalamazoo College, but I don't see anything relating to zitirons or relevant mythology on their page so far. And if you can miraculously read medieval Dutch, here's the link to the page on zitirons in Van der Naturen Bloeme (x).

Assassin's Creed x Red Dead Redemption crossover?

Like, the Van der Linde gang meet Connor or something. Does he join the gang for a bit, or does he meet them searching for Charles Lee? Maybe he meets them as a child or something, like his village was just killed and he was lost. Maybe Arthur acts as a father figure, or Dutch takes him in and grows up with Arthur and John.

Unfortunately, Ratonhnhaké:ton wouldn’t work for this crossover because RDR2 is set around 1890s while Ratonhnhaké:ton was born in 1756. If you want a crossover, it’s more possible for the Van der Linde gang to have met with Ratonhnhaké:ton’s grandchildren or great grandchildren. Maybe they might even be already bearing the Miles last name?

If you really want it to be Ratonhnhaké:ton, maybe he gets reborn as his great grandchild and he chases after the Van Der Linde gang because they might have a POE or have a document that the Templars and Assassins want?

If you want a canon character, I would suggest Jacob traveling to America for a while and getting entangled with the Van der Linde gang because he was searching for Templar activities or he’s looking for a POE?

Or maybe he’s just there to get a break after the whole ordeal with Jack?

Antoon van den Heuvel, Antoine van den Heuvel or Anton van den Heuvel (nickname: 'don Antonio') (c. 1600 – 5 August 1677) was a Flemish history painter and draughtsman. After training and working in Antwerp and Rome, he returned to his native Ghent where he was one of the important creators of altarpieces for the churches in the region.

Antoon van den Heuvel painted mainly religious scenes and portraits. He is usually regarded as a representative of the international Caravaggesque movement. His Lamentation in the Church of Borsbeke relies upon a painting by the Dutch Carravagist Gerard van Honthorst of the same subject for its composition and a number of motifs.

His style is, however, not that easily reduced to the Caravaggesque movement. His early work showed a preference for contrasting colours and strong lighting, with little use of transitional tones. But compared to his contemporary Jan Janssens, one of the foremost representatives of the Ghent Caravaggisti, Antoon van den Heuvel rarely showed Caravaggesque elements. Only in one work, 'Mary with the Christ Child and the Rosary' of 1634 (Church of Nazareth, Belgium, he adopted one of the motifs of Caravaggio: 'The Madonna with the snake' (Rome, Galleria Borghese).

Van den Heuvel's style is in its linear compositions and bright lighting more Classicist in nature and closer to the work of Agostino Carracci, Annibale Carracci and Lodovico Carracci and their followers. He must have seen their work during his residence in Rome.

Van den Heuvel also borrowed motifs and compositions of contemporary Flemish painters such as Rubens and Caspar de Crayer.

His later work between 1640 and 1650 is less colourful and therefore appears less expressive.

Van den Heuvel also made designs for engravings. The paintings (some of them after designs by Rubens) that he (and other painters) made on the occasion of the Joyous Entry of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria in Ghent in 1635 were engraved to be included in a publication authored by Willem van der Beke (Guilielmus Becanus). The publication entitled Serenissimi principis Ferdinandi Hispaniarum infantis S.R.E. cardinalis triumphalis introitus in Flandriae metropolim Gandavum was published by Johannes Meursius in Antwerp in 1636. Leading Antwerp engravers Jacob Neefs, Pieter de Jode II and Antony van der Does made the engravings for the publication.

A portrait painting made by van den Heuvel was used by the prominent engraver Paulus Pontius as the basis for his engraving of a portrait of the Flemish poet Jeremias Pierssene.Guillaume Duvivier, an engraver who was active in Ghent in the 17th century, made an engraving after a painting of Antoon van den Heuvel which shows two servant women in a kitchen. This genre subject is atypical for van den Heuvel who mainly painted religious scenes and portraits.

BLOGTOBER 10/25/2022: TAILGATE/BUMPERKLEEF

I have a burning need to talk about this movie because I haven't heard about it nearly enough, and it's a real treat. I expect the relative silence on TAILGATE means that, like me, others may have glanced at the summary and thought that they'd seen this movie before. I mean, how many road rage thrillers does one need, and how different can they be from one another? There may also be an air of familiarity around specifically Dutch movies about road-based peril, since the THE VANISHING takes up so much space in this arena. In any case, I am here to tell you that what may sound generic on paper is uniquely horrifying in practice.

When Hans (Jeroen Spitzenberger) takes his wife and two girls (Liz Vergeer and Roosmarijn van der Hoek) on a trip to visit his parents, it makes for a showcase of minor league bad behavior. The average, white, upper-middle class family totally lack appropriate boundaries, which you understand immediately when one child announces that they'll be late getting on the road because her mother Diana (Anniek Pheifer) is taking a shit. Hans's mother Trudy (Truus te Selle) calls relentlessly to ask pesky questions about every detail of their trip, as Hans passive-aggressively ignores her, refusing to allow anyone to pick up the phone even to give her an ETA. Trudy is a lousy hostess, planning a lot of boring activities and fixing up all sorts of inhospitable food, leading Diana to buy the girls burgers and fries, which they casually throw out the window into moving traffic. The children bicker about whose turn it is with the iPad, as Hans engrosses them in a conversation where they come up with all sorts of insulting things to say about other people's driving. In fact, he is so involved with this heckling that he nearly slams into the van in front of them when it breaks abruptly…

Just the scenes of garden variety bad driving that kick off TAILGATE are frightening enough on their own, but it features a heavy hitting bad guy played by the wonderful Willem de Wolf (who you may recognize from Paul Verhoeven's BLACK BOOK), known here as Ongedierteverdelger Ed, or Exterminator Ed. Ed is obsessed with etiquette and responsible behavior in a Hannibal Lecter-y kind of way, but instead of being a sophisticated psychiatrist, Ed is a pest control specialist, and there lies an important part of what makes TAILGATE so special. Ed's modus operandi for punishing the impolite is his spray rig for an extremely toxic and corrosive chemical that has horrifying effects on the human body. This film is an exercise in how to deeply disturb the audience without featuring much in the way of actual murder. The killing at the beginning of the film is upsetting, but you don't realize exactly how bad it really is until much later in the film, when Ed menaces Hans's family with the tools of his trade.

I can't help delving into spoilers here because I was so taken with TAILGATE's revolting climax, during which Hans, saturated with Ed's poison, is reduced to a hallucinating mass of weeping blisters, and he has to be dragged to safety over a window sill. The ensuing shower scene is on par with JACOB'S LADDER in terms of things that you hope never happen to you in a bathroom. This is the only horror outing from writer-director Lodewijk Crijns, unless I'm missing something, but he really seems to have a knack for it; the film is suspenseful, gruesome, and highly efficient, and I can't recommend it enough if you've got the guts for this sort of thing.

talking with an o'driscoll has set new limits to her patience and she could thank the creator for having gifted her that patience in the first place. after having stayed up all night, fiddling with indecision, she was now riding slowly beside the frye boy, eyes closed, set to the rhythm of their horses' deep breaths sucking in the warm open air. but what she's about to do only leaves her cold in the hot sun. she likes to think she's fast enough to draw and shoot, but sitting is awkward. the blanket heavy on her shoulder does wonders and hopefully, she'd gain his trust just enough to chase off suspicion. do or don't, woman. he'll kill you one day eventually if you let him. if you'll let him? did it really come down to this? it happens all so fast: first, she whips to grab an arm to pull forward, whipping her revolver from her left with her right hand and just as the barrel skims over jacob's leg, or horse, smoke plumes between them twice. sokanon instantly pulls away ( whether or not jacob crashes to the ground, she can't tell ) as she rides away several feet to get a better idea of the mess. eyes are set, hardened by their differences, guilt lined in a deep frown, " if it's any consolation, jacob, I'm sorry. "

        𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐨𝐛 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐮𝐬𝐮𝐚𝐥, plummeting him into a quiet mood with a small scowl carved across his lips, his brows knitting together as he stared into the bright sunlight. All the holes and threadbare material in his jacket and vest didn’t help ease the heat, he could feel the sweat building up underneath his collar as they rode slowly in the morning sun.  Luckily, Sokanon didn’t seem to be in a talkative mood. He preferred talkative company when he wasn’t grumpy; they always aired out their weaknesses without any prodding, but the quest ones made for better company on the long haul. Mysterious company, nonetheless, but manageable for the long stretch ahead. 

        But the quiet was questionable. With his knowledge of his companion, Sokanon had grown too quiet. As he eyed the expression on her face, it looked like she wanted to say something, but barred herself from doing so. His voice was hoarse, which only added to his rough intonation as he spoke.

        “You look like you have something to say.“

        He shifted in his saddle, clearing his throat, as his eyes lingered on Sokanon. She looked forward, her mouth shut tight. She closed her eyes as if she was contemplating. And contemplating she was, for in a second, Jacob saw the flash of silver, and next thing he knew, his horse roared and he was thrown off his mighty steed. In a matter of seconds, Jacob tumbled to the ground stomach-first. Dust kicked up around him and he gasped, sucking in a harsh breath of dirt and gravel that only inflamed his stomach further. It felt like he dropped from the top of a gambling boat, head first into the water below to make his escape. He felt just as dizzy and disoriented as if he plummeted head-first into the icy water. The damn heat didn’t matter anymore., he was suffocating under the mess of elements.

        ❝ Fucking bitch! ❞ Jacob yelled in pain, a wet substance clung to his hand when he reached down to cover his leg. Then the pain started, sending him wincing and groaning again as he shifted his weight onto his good leg, crawling pathetically across the gravel. He didn’t care to hear what Sokanon had to say, it hardly mattered to him when this strike of betrayal stung so deep. A venomous scorpion, that’s what she fucking was. Shouldn’t have trusted anyone that was once a Van der Linde, no matter if they believed his gospel or not. He created venomous sinners, not saints.

Ik had nog nooit van het museum gehoord, maar kwam er op weg naar en van het Museum voor Schone Kunsten toevallig langs. Nu ja, zo toevallig is het niet, want het museum ligt op een paar minuten lopen van het hotel waar ik overnacht. Terug in het hotel zocht ik op internet naar nadere gegevens over het museum en het leek me een bezoek waard. Wat ik uiteindelijk te zien kreeg overtrof echter al mijn verwachtingen.

Museum Mayer van den Berg - want daar heb ik het over – toont de zeer diverse kunstcollectie die Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901) bijeenbracht. Zijn vader was ondernemer en zijn moeder stamde uit een ondernemersgeslacht. Vijf jaar na de dood van zijn vader liet Frits de handels- en industriële activiteiten over aan zijn broer Oscar en wijdde zich vanaf toen vooral aan zijn passie voor kunst, die hij deelde met zijn moeder. Frits bleef zijn hele leven ongehuwd. In 1901 kwam plotseling hij om het leven bij een ruiterongeval. Dankzij de inspanningen van zijn moeder, Henriëtte van den Bergh werd drie jaar later het museum geopend. Daarmee realiseerde ze postuum de droom van haar zoon. Sinds 1951 wordt het museum beheerd door de stad Antwerpen.

De verzameling van Frits Mayer van den Berg is enorm en, zoals gezegd, zeer gevarieerd. Van munten en archeologische opgravingen tot schilderijen en beelden en van plakkaten en kant tot zuilen en kasten. Al die voorwerpen zijn ondergebracht in een zeer huiselijk aandoend museum. Frits zag ‘zijn’ museum als een huiselijke en bewoonbare plaats. Voor de inrichting daarvan verzamelde hij meubels en decoraties. Zijn moeder heeft de visie van haar zoon op voortreffelijke wijze vormgegeven.

De eerste zaal in het museum is gewijd aan portretten. Er hangen werken die zo groot zijn dat ze vrijwel zeker niet in zijn oorspronkelijke woonhuis opgehangen konden worden. Dat belette Mayer van den Bergh echter niet ze aan te schaffen. Drie grote familieportretten hangen naast elkaar. Ze dateren allemaal uit vrijwel dezelfde periode. Toch hebben ze elk een totaal andere stijl. Het portret van Meyndert Sonck en familie is het meest recente, maar ook het minst dynamische werk. Sonck bekleedde allerlei officiële functies in de stad Hoorn. Het familieportret is strak, formeel en stereotiep. De kinderen zijn rijk uitgedost, wat de welstand van de familie etaleerde.

Willem van der Does, die later burgemeester van Den Haag zou worden, liet zijn gezin op een aanzienlijk dynamischer manier vastleggen door schilder Johannes Mijtens. Ze bevinden zich in de buitenlucht en dragen deels fantasiekleren, maar hun kapsels zijn modieus voor de tijd. De gezichten komen heel levensecht en spontaan aan. Wat ook opvalt is de positie van de handen, die bij de meeste gezinsleden een prominente rol spelen.

Bij de aanbidding van het pasgeboren Kind Jezus door de drie wijzen (of voor de katholieken onder ons: de drie koningen) bieden zij het kind cadeaus aan. Op de meeste schilderijen waarop de herders het Kind komen aanbidden, blijven geschenken achterwege. Wat hadden die arme herders immers weg te geven? Toch staan ze bij Jacob Jordaens niet met lege handen. Een van de herders blaast het vuur aan, een tweede speelt voor de Heilige Familie op de fluit en vooraan biedt een herder Maria een kom met melk aan. Warmte, muziek en melk; daar kunnen geen goud, mirre of wierrook tegen op!

note: her background is the same for all her verses EXCEPT for hunger games.  used to live with her husband and someone ends up murdering him,   which makes her dip into a dangerous life.   sadie is chaotic neutral in all of her verses.  and a slytherin,  if you’re into that like i am.   rdr verses: my main one follows the events of the game pre-epilogue where she’s running with the van der linde gang as an outlaw.  epilogue/post-epilogue verse consists of sadie being a bounty hunter and bodyguard.   then by rdr1 she’s mostly retired from the bounty hunter life and is living alone in mexico. also includes alternate post rdr2 verse where she’s either become the sheriff of a small town or has become the leader of an outlaw gang of only women. 

fallout 4 verse: sadie’s an unaffiliated bounty hunter in the commonwealth.   although she denies being part of the minutemen,   she constantly helps them get rid of enemies/threats and can sometimes be found in their settlements trading supplies or getting some rest.  she spends a lot of time in goodneighbor and picks up a lot of her bounties from there.  she is mostly always seen with her hugely grossly mutated two-headed horse,   bob.   absolutely loathes raiders of all kinds since her husband was murdered by a group of them.

far cry 5 verse: her home and her husband were burnt down in the whitetail mountains by jacob’s peggies.  doesn’t openly side with the resistance but just like in her fo4 verse,  she goes out of her way to help them and support their cause.   is an absolute fucking menace to the cultists and is known for burning down wolf beacons.

hunger games verse: sadie was chosen as a tribute for District 10 when she was 18 years old. She was the lone victor, although not without suffering serious physical and emotional damage. her vocal cords were paralyzed from a blow by District 2’s tribute, and she lost strength in both of her hands due to having her fingers and wrists broken. she’s been the best mentor she could be but no one from her district has won, so she’s become extremely pessimistic and has sunken herself heavily into the bottle.   openly sides with the rebellion against the capitol.

modern verses of all kinds, gta 5 inspired: she operates off the black market/~dark web~ as a mercenary/hit woman.   has a very extensive criminal record for minor crimes but she has never been caught for her more major ones.   does a good job of passing off as an ordinary widowed woman–   lives on a farm on the outskirts of a big city by herself with lots of farm animals.   also sells the produce from her farm for dirt fuckin’ cheap at the local farmer’s markets and donates a lot of food to women’s shelters.

hunger games verse: sadie was chosen as a tribute for District 10 when she was 18 years old. She was the lone victor, although not without suffering serious physical and emotional damage. her vocal cords were paralyzed from a blow by District 2's tribute, and she lost strength in both of her hands due to having her fingers and wrists broken. she's been the best mentor she could be but no one from her district has won, so she's become extremely pessimistic and has sunken herself heavily into the bottle.   openly sides with the rebellion against the capitol.

modern verses of all kinds, gta 5 inspired: she operates off the black market/~dark web~ as a mercenary/hit woman.   has a very extensive criminal record for minor crimes but she has never been caught for her more major ones.   does a good job of passing off as an ordinary widowed woman--   lives on a farm on the outskirts of a big city by herself with lots of farm animals.   also sells the produce from her farm for dirt fuckin’ cheap at the local farmer’s markets and donates a lot of food to women’s shelters.
