Jacqueline "Jackie" Tern. Definitely not the result of a very tipsy fairy godmother accidentally turning the pumpkin into a human.
Felt like doing a character for spooky month. I think she turned out cute 👍

Kingdom Hearts Disney Character Daemons
I’ve finally done it, and made a list of all 59 human Disney character’s Daemons that appear in Kingdom Hearts.
I’ve listed them in Game Order and then World Order, with Worlds appearing in subsequent games only listed in the first game they debuted in including all characters, even if they themselves didn’t appear in that game (eg. Olympus is only listed in KH1, but includes Meg). I’ve added notes as well for a ‘quick analysis or things I’ve found out while researching the animals, names or characters.
Since it’s a monster of a list, I’ve saved everyone some Dash space and listed everything under the cut.
Kingdom Hearts
Wonderland
Alice: Unsettled, usually in the form of a cat. Jacob (Dinah)
Tumblr media
Queen of Hearts: Anna’s Hummingbird. Basil
Tumblr media
Notes: I wasn’t sure if I was going to include the Queen or not- but I decided to, since there isn’t anything that says she’s not human. I chose a hummingbird for her for her frequent mood swings due to the fact that (male) hummingbirds can get very aggressive.
Olympus Coliseum
Hercules: Pegasus (he’s half mortal so, they’d be extraordinary)
Tumblr media
Megera: Ferret. Creon
Tumblr media
Notes: I’ve found myself with a stereotype that if I can’t find a particular animal for a Daemon, I simply make them a mustalidae, but I think it works with Megera as she gives off a fem-fetale confidence.
Deep Jungle
Tarzan: African Fish Eagle. Juana
Tumblr media
Jane: Jewel Beetle (Chrysochroa fulgidissima). Iain
Tumblr media
Clayton: Sabor
Tumblr media
Notes: These were some of the hardest Daemons I’ve had to place, since I could not think of what to give them (apart from Clayton). But looking closer at Tarzan and Jane’s personalities, I chose what I feel are fitting Daemons, with the Eagle being a symbol of bravery, and the Beetle being a symbol for intellect and quirkiness.
Agrabah
Aladin: Sadaf (Abu)
Tumblr media
Jasmine: Arabian Mau. Dara
Tumblr media
Jafar: Jacqueline (Iago)
Tumblr media
Notes: I did almost give Jasmine Rajah for her Daemon, but wanted something smaller and less imposing, but equally as outgoing, so I decided to keep in the Feline family. Also, TIL; Iago is Welsh for Jack.
Monstro
Gepetto: Fidela (Figaro)
Tumblr media
Notes: I do want to say that I think that once Pinocchio becomes human he would get a Daemon, and that Daemon would be Jimminy, granted by the Blue Fairy. But considering Jimminy’s role in the KH franchise, I thought it would be weird for him to be traveling with Sora + co.
Neverland
Wendy: Unsettled, Mostly takes the form of a Bluebird. Geoffrey
Tumblr media
Peter: Unsettled, usually the form of a Cuckoo. Ceil
Tumblr media
Slightly: Unsettled, usually in the form of a Vixen. Jackie
Tumblr media
Cubby:  Unsettled, usually in the form of a Black bear cub. Thea
Tumblr media
Hook: Slender Mongoose. Adelaide
Tumblr media
Mr. Smee: Mallard duck. Deryn
Tumblr media
Notes: Smee’s Daemon was going to be a Schipperke (a small black dog) until I looked up Smee’s name and found it was a common old name to call Waterfowl (mainly ducks and Smews), and his personality fit!
Kingdom Hearts II
Land of Dragons
Mulan: Cri-Kee
Tumblr media
Le Shang: Pallas Cat. Ushas
Tumblr media
Shan Yu: Hayabusa
Tumblr media
Ling: Japanese Macaque. Binh
Tumblr media
Yao: Hamadryas Baboon. Jie
Tumblr media
Chien Po: White-Cheeked Macaque.Yu
Tumblr media
The Emperor: Indochinese Tigress. Indrani
Tumblr media
Notes: I based Ling, Yao and Chien Po on the three wise monkeys in terms of Daemon themes. The White-Cheeked Macaque isn’t the best choice, however, since it was only recently discovered..
Beast’s Castle
Belle: Eurasian Jay. Clarus
Tumblr media
‘Beast’: Wild European Sow (Boar). Addison
Tumblr media
Notes: I wasn’t going to give Beast a Daemon at first- she’d only appear in his human form at the end credits scene anyway, but I chose to give him one of his design inspirations, since the personality matched.
Port Royal
Capt. Jack Sparrow: Sparrow Hawk. Wyleye
Tumblr media
William Turner Jr: Arctic Tern. Vilma
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Swann: Barnacle Goose. Aaron
Tumblr media
Capt. Hector Barbosa: Great Skua. Rossa
Tumblr media
Notes: Yes, they’re all birds because all of their names (apart from Barbossa) were names of birds. I changed Jack’s from just ‘Sparrow’ to ‘Sparrowhawk’ since I think that suited him more. Also, Skuas may look like a drab seagull, but they are mean little things that rob other birds for food and eat chicks!
Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep
Enchanted Dominion
Aurora: Boreal Owl. Garrik
Tumblr media
Maleficent: Diablo
Tumblr media
Flora: European Robin. Zephyr
Tumblr media
Fauna: Dunnock. Silvius
Tumblr media
Merryweather: Great tit. Onofrio
Tumblr media
Notes: I’ve already talked about the Fairies before and haven’t changed their Daemons. Aurora is an owl because owls are stereotyped into two things: being knowledgeable, and being tired all the time. Disney themselves play to this trope a lot too.
Castle of Dreams
Cinderella: Jaq
Tumblr media
Lady Tremaine: Lucifer
Tumblr media
Anastasia Tremaine: Lion Tamarin. Bion
Tumblr media
Drizella Tremaine: Peacock Pheasant. Felix
Tumblr media
Notes: I chose the sister’s Daemons for specific reasons. They’re both prideful in their looks, singing voice and being ‘better than’ Cinderella. the two most common animals that symbolize pride is the lion and the peacock. giving these animals as Daemons to the sisters gives them a falseness about them. They may see themselves as all these good things, but in reality- they’re nothing but a sham.
Dwarf Woodland
The Queen/Witch Hag: Panther(leopard)/Rook. Gunnar
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Snowwhite: Bluetit. Vardan
Tumblr media
Notes: When matching Daemons to characters, I like to do research on those characters, and as it turns out- the Queen was going to be given a black panther as an animal companion in early drafts of Snow White. This was changed to a crow that lives in her potions’ lair later on. I gave her two forms, because I could foresee her using magic on her Daemon to make the disguise more complete.
Dream Drop Distance
La Citè des Cloches
Quasimodo: White Dove. Natalie
Tumblr media
Judge Claude Frolo: Silver Fox. Agrippina
Tumblr media
Esmerelda: Djai
Tumblr media
Captain Phoebus: Goldcrest. Petra
Tumblr media
Notes: I don’t have much to say here other than Pheobus’ Daemon was chosen based on his name alone, since they are small birds with a very bright crest that looks like sunshine when it catches the light.
The Grid
Kevin: Tarsier. Doireann
Tumblr media
Sam: Marva (Marvin)
Tumblr media
Notes: I did this very late on and very quickly due to me forgetting that Sam and Kevin are humans in this world! even at a quick look, I think I got them right.
Kingdom Hearts III
Kingdom of Corona
Rapunzel: Pascal
Tumblr media
Flynn: Eurasian Magpie. Owena
Tumblr media
Mother Gothel: Orchid Mantis. Chrysanthos
Tumblr media
Notes: I only really had trouble with Flynn’s Daemon, but landed on a magpie because they both like shiny things- like enormous piles of money.
Arendelle
Elsa: Ermine. Vetle
Tumblr media
Anna: Mountain Hare. Kai
Tumblr media
Kristoff: Svalbard Reindeer. Bae
Tumblr media
Hans: European Wolf. Gerda
Tumblr media
Notes: I based Elsa’s Daemon from the early concept of Frozen, where she was going to be an evil queen with a coat of living Ermine. Other than hers, all other Daemons are based on the original Book’s characters, with Hans’ Daemon being named after the main character, which further amplifies the end twist.
San Fransokyo
Hiro: Japanese Beetle. Kei
Tumblr media
Gogo: Hedgehog. Hwan
Tumblr media
Honey Lemon: Bumble-Bee. Benigno
Tumblr media
Fred: Iguana. Pamela
Tumblr media
Wasabi: Mediterranean Mantis. Ginger
Tumblr media
Notes: I originally had them all as Insects, but I have forgotten what other insects I had for Go-go and Fred, but I still feel I gave them the right choice.
END If you’ve made it this far, congratulations! my days of hard work was not wasted!

“The Gateway” (2018)
Sci-Fi/Thriller
Running Time: 90 minutes
Written by: John V. Soto &  Michael White
Directed by: John V. Soto
Featuring: Jacqueline McKenzie, Myles Pollard, Hayley McElhinney
Jane Chandler: “Remember how your Dad died?”
This week sees the release of a throwback of sorts a direct to DVD sci-fi movie, “The Gateway” (2018) which by today’s standards is a bit of a dud but twenty years ago may have held the interest longer as well as actually being a novelty. However what really lets this movie down is the complete unoriginality of the plot which can be seen in almost any genre television series of the past few decades, parallel universes can be considered de rigueur for pretty much any genre show so if you plan to make a movie with this as its central premise it has better be very good or have some kind of unique hook to it, unfortunately “The Gateway” does not so it is an awkward as well as not a very satisfying viewing. When making low budget movies, of which this most definitely is, the standard genre to attempt is horror because of the many devices used it is easier to hide the fact that money is short, it is also easier to give characters depth while also moving the plot forward, especially if there are no twists or very little actual originality. If you look at the oeuvre of working directors there will always be at least one horror movie, maybe more as it is a great way to gain experience as well as sell these genre movies to streaming services or even on DVD.
However for some reason director John V. Soto has decided to create this sci-fi movie where it is obvious from the beginning that the budget is low and there is no hiding the fact especially with the locations, the actors and the script, which are not fantastic. In terms of the look of the movie it is shot in close up with very little wide shots so as to disguise, clumsily I might add, the fact that there were few usable locations as well as no money for CGI to hide the different dimensions which for a movie like this is one of the more basic requirements. The other aspect is the technology which look’s like it is from the 1990s not approaching 2020; not only that but the ay it works as well as the laboratory look like this is a student movie. In fact that it is what the entire movie reeks of, a student movie that has been out together with the assistance of other students.
Director and writer John V. Soto has a history in genre movies with his most notable success being the horror “Needles” (2010) that featured a couple of up and coming stars but since that has made fairly routine Australian thrillers which has led to this movie, more or less which again is not positive. It is a very odd thing but it feels like the director has been transported from the 1990s to now as the way in which these types of sci-fi stories are being told is very different, also as I have mentioned this story would normally have ended up on a television show not in a movie, there is very little to hold the idea of this story together which is a real shame.
“The Gateway” is based around a particle physicist grieving over the loss of her husband in a car crash travels to a parallel world to find him again, with dire consequences for her family. The plot is exactly that as well as thin as paper, not much work has gone into his beyond the initial idea of the story.
The lead actor is Jacqueline McKenzie who has the most experience in terns of high profile projects and frankly this movie is beneath her talents, she holds this together through her skill but there is little else to recommend as the performances by the rest of the cast is mediocre at best which means there is a gap in the believability of the entire movie but then that is just another nail in the coffin of “The Gateway”.
“The Gateway” if it was any kind of good movie would have ended up on Netflix as content is king and if a movie is any good but does not make the leap to a cinema you had better believe that the streaming giant would buy it for their international service, but this is not really good enough for them so we wind up with it on DVD which means it will probably not be seen. In saying tat it may end up on some service and if it does that is when I would watch this movie, but it does not need to be a part of any collection.

I wanted to post about the people who’ve bought my work over this past year. It is snowing today. It is a proper snow day. It looks like a winter wonderland and it is still coming down. I’m feeling pensive today a bit and I also feel that there is much to say. All saved up. Maybe several posts are soon to follow. I’ve jumped into the pursuit of making art with both feet for over three years now and it has been the most amazing ride of my life. Sometimes I have those moments of “What am I doing with my life? Shouldn’t I get a real job?”, but most of the time it is crystal clear obvious that this is exactly what I should be doing. I look around at our society. The traditional approach of pursuing life from one’s fears and intellect and what a disaster this so often is. I choose to live from love, not fear. I choose to stay rooted in a place of trust. I want to see this world change. If only within myself. The money I have is always exactly the amount that I need. The people around me form my tribe in direct relation to how closely I’m listening to my heart. I am a single woman of 35. This is rare and I realize that. However, as much as I long for a loving connection, I chose authenticity over security. I see that the world is changing for women and that maybe I am a radical part of that revolution. I think this is beautiful. Since I started making and selling my art after grad school a year and a half ago, several of my large paintings have sold. The most amazing, surprising and touching part about this, to me is the people who have bought them.  All of the people who’ve bought my paintings have been absolutely amazing inspiring people. I’m in awe of all of them. And I’d like to write about them here.
Thank you: Richard Hearns. Richard bought the first one called, “Hands” in Ireland, during my final show. It was the largest of all the pieces in my self-portrait series. (102"x64"). What is amazing about this is that Richard is one of Irelands most prominent artists. He is also one of the most uplifting and inspiring people I’ve ever met. He also happened to live directly across the street from the school. What I love about Richard is his playfulness and his absolutely commitment to living directly from his heart and trusting that. He is a perfect example of (an artist) someone who just went plunging happily after what most delights him and is successfully thriving at it. I loved that he wanted to buy my piece. What an honor.  He is a role model for me if I ever met one.
http://richardhearns.com/
Patsy Connolly.
The second person to buy a piece from me (from the same show) was Patsy Connolly. She bought, “Turns.” The first self-portrait that I painted. This piece is special. Partly because it is the first one I made and so features all the raw-ness of me working things out and also because I spent the most time embroidering into it. It is a small piece, but I spent many hours sitting near my little gas fire place/heater in my small apartment by the ocean embroidering Terns into it. Terns are birds that I discovered online can be found flying around about the southern coast of Ireland. I named the piece “Turns” as a kind of pun. All the paintings unintentionally have a sort of soul transformation process exhibited in them. I found it amazing to be surrounded by them in a room after I had finished, framed and hung them all: “Darkness”, “Quiet”, “Turns”, “into the Light.“…. Patsy is an artist as well and had a show hanging during my last weeks in Ireland. She is a beautiful painter of birds and other things, living in quite a magical house full to the brim with her art and surrounded by an amazingly lush garden that came out of her soul. I love it.  She had me over for tea and scones after the painting purchase. When I asked for herbal tea, we went out to the garden to pick nettles. such a joy and an honor to meet her, speak with her and have my artwork in her home. https://www.irishartsreview.com/new-generation-artist-work/patsy-connolly/
Theresa Leahy.
The painting "Swirl” went to Theresa Leahy for a live/trade. I stayed in Theresa’s spare bedroom in her magical “glass house” for a month in exchange for this painting. She has a room overlooking the ocean entirely walled with huge windows. I actually saw this house on a walk when I first moved to Ireland, before I knew Theresa, and thought to myself, “I want to live there.” :) And then I did!!! Amazing.  I met Theresa because I was recruited into a play being put on by a local theater troupe. Theresa was not directing this particular play, but rather acting in it. But I soon learned as I practiced with her that she is a born genius director. It was amazing watching her playful creative mind come to life while she thought of ideas for scenes. I love getting to witness people in the midst of doing what they are most passionate about. Its pure magic.  I loved seeing my art hang in her beautiful home by the sea. Who would have thought when I first saw that house on my walk?! Theresa has since moved to Malaysia. So I imagine my art is now hanging somewhere in a beautiful home in Malaysia now. How exciting!!
I wanted so much to sell all my paintings in Ireland so I didn’t have to figure out how to transport them back to the States (and disassemble them), but alas, I ended up taking with me “Quiet”, “Into the Light”, “Wind”, and “Darkness”. This turned out to be such a blessing. Not only did I get to display these pieces around my studio in Asheville and in my first two shows here, but they also, ended up being bought by extraordinary people.
Rob Meredith and Lynne Coté
I was so amazed when one magical day, I got a text that said, “Wanna sell some art?” I was a little confused at first and assumed they mistook my neighbor Jacqueline Maloney’s art for mine, which often happens. But no, they were looking at “Into the Light” and “Quiet”, not one, but two paintings! They bought them on the spot. This was a magical day for me.  Robby Meredith and his wife Lynne Coté ended up buying these two special paintings that I had mistakenly hoped to sell in Ireland and also came to my show at Odds Cafe and bought “Stephanie.” Robby eventually  came to a group show I participated in at the Asheville Area Arts Council and bought “Mountain Bird Sanctuary” and commissioned a piece as well. Needless to say, I was in awe and still am. There is so much I love about this surprising couple that magically appeared in my life. They are the first people to buy my artwork (big pieces) who were total strangers to me. In fact, I wasn’t even there when they decided to buy them. They have been so consistently supportive and enthusiastic about my art, I feel like a super hero.  I really do think that maybe they are like angels materialized in my life to cheer me on.  When they came to my show at Odds Cafe, Lynne whispered to me upon leaving, “We love you.”  What is better then this, I ask you?? I went to their new house just outside of Asheville to find that “Quiet” is hanging prominently in their living room, “Stephanie” will be hanging on the wall directly across from the front door so that its the first thing people see when they enter. “Mountain Bird Sanctuary” and the commission will be in their guest house and “Into the Light” is in Lynne’s office in the Cabi World Headquarters in southern California. What!!??? Robby encouraged me to quit my part time job and just make art all the time. I also love that Lynne, while I don’t know her that well, represents an ideal for me. A high powered leader of a woman, who has kids, is married and is also a CEO of a huge business. That is bad-ass. I aspire to be like that in my own way. This is something I’ve been thinking about quite a bit lately. So many women quit their careers or life ambitions to raise kids. While this might be the true hearts desire of some women, I think that far too often it is just the expected role that women fall into without even really thinking about it. It doesn’t have to be that way. We find ourselves in a society that is mostly run by men, while women find themselves bored after their children leave the house, looking for meaning and fulfillment.  (my musings on life, our society and being still single and childless at age 35 and how maybe its a good thing.)
Amber Smithson
I painted my friend Amber nursing her baby Clover Grace because I lived with them and witnessed this beautiful process often. Of course I wanted to photograph and paint it. I was so honored when Amber right away wanted to buy it.  Amber came into my studio for the photo shoot and I was able to get to know her a little more. What was most beautiful and special about this is actually a little bit personal, but what the hell, I’ll tell it here. Amber and her husband, Kerby are in an open marriage and when I first met them, Amber immediately flew off to Hawaii for several months. During which time I spent some time with Kerby. Not a lot, but enough that, as it was my first time involved with someone in an open marriage, I felt a little bit awkward when Amber came home. Fast forward a year later and I find myself returning from Ireland and moving in with them and some friends. It was the most obvious place for me to live. It very much had the feeling of this-is-where-you’re-meant-to-be about it.  I love just letting things happen as they are meant to and not resisting it. I got to be friends with this very amazing and powerfully open-minded couple. I’m so grateful for this. Some of my most favorite moments in this house were the mornings when everyone else had gone off to work and it was just me and Amber and clover sharing coffee in the kitchen together.  I love that I made this painting and that Amber has it. It captures a moment in time so special and fleeting. What a happy full circle.
Margaret Jemison
“Darkness” was quickly purchased the day after the show went up at Odds Cafe by a friend and fellow artist, Maggie Jemison. Maggie is one of the most talented dramatic art magicians I’ve ever met. She is a deep deep spiritual soul who is delving into her soul work profoundly and courageously. Hearing her read a poem is a powerful experience. I was so blessed to have her read at my first show at “Downtown Books and News” during the open mic poetry reading. She has recently bought a mountain top (basically) in appalachia. Her beautiful new home is literally on the very top of a mountain. It is surrounded by a meditation house, an art studio, an “office” house, and a wood shop. I think this painting is perfect for her. “Darkness” was one of my favorite paintings That I made in that series. It is the only one where I used Indian ink, since I ran out of blackberries. Darkness is a part of all our journeys and it certainly has been part of mine. Darkness is our soul swimming up from the depths, finding the light, breaking the surface. However uncomfortable, it is necessary. At least it has been for me. I included this poem by Nigerian poet Ben Okri with the painting, tucked into the back. :
Remember that all things which happen
To you are raw materials
Endlessly fertile
Endlessly yielding of thoughts that could change
Your life and go on doing forever …
So fear not, my friend.
The darkness is gentler than you think.

1) Jacqueline is actually at least averagely tall, Kapre is just gigantic.
2) Kapre's face does that all the time. Jack's only when they're trying to look intimidating
