Celebrated for its music, color, and nearly nonstop dancing, Black Orpheus won big at Cannes and at the Oscars, where it was named the best foreign language film of the year. It remains a film of great energy, one of those movies that cause you to hold your breath when the music stops and menacing silence takes hold. Sure, it can be criticized -- and has been, even by President Obama, in Dreams From My Father -- for its sentimental portrayal of its characters as simple, carefree folk and its sanitizing of the favelas in which they live. But the film takes place in the realm of myth, not reality, and even if we must take our myths with a touch of skepticism, we shouldn't miss the point of what they tell us about larger things like love and joy and jealousy and death.

Black Orpheus (1959)
Black Orpheus is a 1959 romantic tradedy film written by Marcel Camus and Jacques Viot. It was also directed by Camus. The film is based on Orfeu da Conceição by Vinicius de Moraes. The film is set in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil during Carnaval.
Young lovers Orfeu (Orpheus in English) and Eurydice run through the slums of Rio during Carnaval, trying to get away from a hitman dressed like Death and Orfeu's vengeful fiancée Mira. The film passes between moments of fantasy and stark reality. This retelling of the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film in 1960. It was also President Barack Obama’s mother’s favorite film.
The film had a compelling story and was visually beautiful. The only other movies that I can think of that are just as beautiful are animated films. The use of the colors of costumes, the lighting, and the beautiful scenery in Brazil made the film absolutely gorgeous to watch.
I loved seeing small symbols of the myth throughout the film. For example, the sun emblem. In some version of the myth Orpheus’ father was Apollo, the Sun god. When Orpheus is preparing to perform in Carnaval, his group chooses a Louis XIV theme (his palace is filled with Apollo and sun emblems/symbols).
I loved this movie so much. It made me think of the Tony Award winning musical Hades Town based on the same Greek myth. It also reminded me of West Side Story (1961). The film had a theatrical element to it. Maybe it reminded me of a movie that my mother would watch on Turner Classic Movies. Black Orpheus has that classic movie feel to it. This film showed me that Black Films can have the Old Hollywood glamour that a lot of Black Films missed out on. I’d love to find some more films like Black Orpheus that tell a beautiful stories with Black casts. Hopefully they’re not racist works that would make any Black person feel infuriated to see now.

O desfile das escolas do Grupo Especial do carnaval do Rio de Janeiro começou neste domingo (03). Se você é do tipo que gosta da data e dos desfiles das escolas de samba, mas não entende como é que a galera curte ficar no meio dessa multidão e com esse calor insuportável que deixa qualquer um de mau humor, aqui vão cinco dicas para curtir o Carnaval no aconchego do lar. Afinal, nada como ficar à vontade, poder ir ao banheiro a hora que quiser e não enfrentar fila para comprar bebida.
1 – MUITOS CARNAVAIS
“Eu faço música de carnaval porque gosto de música de carnaval, brinquei todos os carnavais, e tinha vontade de, um dia, ouvir as minhas músicas, eu mesmo pular na rua ouvindo uma música feita por mim. Então me interessa incentivar isso. Eu não sei se minha música contribui para isso. O trio elétrico sim, contribuiu para isso. Embora eu saiba que o fato de dar uma importância nacional a isso possa levar à turistização do carnaval baiano, embora eu fique entre a cruz e a caldeirinha, eu termino fazendo porque eu morro de vontade e, depois, porque é a possibilidade de eu apresentar um exemplo”, disse Caetano Veloso em entrevista a Ricardo Vespucci e Wilson Moherdavi para revista O Bondinho.
Lançada em 1977, Muitos Carnavais é a primeira coletânea de Caetano Veloso, porém um disco pouco conhecido do cantor e compositor baiano. O álbum reúne apenas suas canções de carnaval como a ótima Muitos Carnavais, que serve de título, e Atrás do Trio Elétrico, de 1969. Algumas delas tocam até hoje durante essa época como Chuva, Suor e Cerveja (Rain, Sweat and Beer), cujo subtítulo brinca com o nome da banda norte-americana Blood, Sweat and Tears. Um Frevo Novo é ótima e foi regravada pelo cantor Netinho no auge do sucesso, no disco ao vivo, de 1996, e Qual é, Baiana? que Gal Costa gravaria no álbum Água Viva, de 1978. Tem também uma boa regravação de Batatinha, Hora da Razão.
2 – UMA HISTÓRIA DO SAMBA: AS ORIGENS
Depois da aclamada trilogia biográfica de Getúlio Vargas, Lira Neto se lançou ao desafio de contar a história do samba urbano. Em Uma História do Samba: As Origens (Companhia das Letras), o escritor cearense pretende retraçar o percurso completo desse ritmo sincopado que é um dos sinônimos da brasilidade. Em virtude da riqueza e da amplitude do material compilado, recheado de documentos inéditos e registros fotográficos, o projeto será desdobrado em três volumes. Neste primeiro, Lira leva o leitor das origens do samba até o desfile inicial das escolas de samba no Rio.
O samba carioca nasceu no início do século XX a partir da gradativa adaptação do samba rural do Recôncavo baiano ao ambiente urbano da então capital federal. Descendente das batidas afro-brasileiras, mas igualmente devedor da polca dançante, o gênero encontrou terreno fértil nos festejos do Carnaval de rua. Nas décadas de 1920 e 1930, com o aprimoramento do mercado fonográfico e da radiodifusão, consolidou seu duradouro sucesso popular, simbolizado pelo surgimento das primeiras estrelas do gênero e pela fundação das escolas de samba.
3 – ORFEU DO CARNAVAL
Baseado na peça teatral Orfeu da Conceição, de Vinícius de Moraes, o filme ítalo-franco-brasileiro de 1959 é dirigido por Marcel Camus e tem roteiro adaptado por Camus e Jacques Viot. O longa conta a trágica história romântica entre a jovem Eurídice (Marpessa Dawn) e o motorista e músico Orfeu (Breno Mello). Os dois se conhecem durante o carnaval no Rio de Janeiro e se apaixonam, mas Orfeu tem uma noiva ciumenta. De acordo com a antiga lenda, o amor do casal é acompanhado de perto pela morte, e ele será capaz de descer aos infernos para salvar a sua grande paixão.
A trilha sonora é de Tom Jobim e Luís Bonfá. Vinícius de Moraes e Antônio Maria também tiveram músicas incluídas, mas, assim como Agostinho dos Santos, que interpretou a música-tema de Orfeu, Manhã de Carnaval, não receberam os créditos. O filme teve outra versão em 1999, sob o nome Orfeu, dirigida por Cacá Diegues.
Orfeu do Carnaval ganhou o Oscar de Melhor Filme Estrangeiro em 1960, representando a França. Trata-se da primeira produção de língua portuguesa a conquistar a estatueta do Oscar e a única na categoria de melhor filme estrangeiro. O longa também venceu a Palma de Ouro no Festival de Cannes em 1959.
4 – LADRÕES DE CINEMA
Ladrões de Cinema é um filme de comédia produzido no Brasil, dirigido por Fernando Coni Campos e lançado em 1977. Misto de cinema-realidade, documentário fajuto e experimento metalinguístico, Ladrões de Cinema é um interessante achado. Durante o carnaval, no Rio de Janeiro, uma equipe de cineastas norte-americanos tem seu material de filmagem roubado pelo bloco de índios que eles documentavam. Nada é falso e vemos de fato o carnaval, o morro do Pavão-Pavãozinho, as biroscas e vielas da comunidade.
Os ladrões, moradores do Pavãozinho, resolvem eles mesmos fazer um filme tendo por tema a Inconfidência Mineira. Toda a população do morro adere à ideia com o mesmo espírito e a alegria da preparação de uma escola de samba, com exceção de Silvério, que preferia vender o equipamento e dividir o dinheiro. O filme é realizado mas a polícia recupera o equipamento, captura os ladrões e a película tem um desfecho curioso.
5 – FILHOS DO CARNAVAL (HBO)
Filhos do Carnaval é uma série dramática brasileira exibida pelo canal de televisão a cabo HBO originalmente em 2006. A trama retrata o cotidiano dos bicheiros cariocas e como eles usam o carnaval para lavar dinheiro. Criada por Cao Hamburger e Elena Soarez, teve roteiro de Soarez, Hamburger e Anna Muylaert, e direção de Cao Hamburger, César Rodrigues, Flávio Tambelini e Luciano Moura, com direção geral de Cao Hamburger.
