Brazil's Bolsonaro, Facing Investigations, Hid at Hungarian Embassy
Tumblr media
On Feb. 8, Brazil’s federal police confiscated former President Jair Bolsonaro’s passport and arrested a pair of his former aides on accusations that they had plotted a coup after Mr. Bolsonaro lost the 2022 presidential election.
Four days later, Mr. Bolsonaro was at the entrance to the Hungarian Embassy in Brazil, waiting to be let in, according to the embassy’s security-camera footage, which was obtained by The New York Times.
The former president appeared to stay at the embassy for the next two days, the footage showed, accompanied by two security guards and waited on by the Hungarian ambassador and staff members. Mr. Bolsonaro, a target of various criminal investigations, cannot be arrested at a foreign embassy that welcomes him, because they are legally off-limits to domestic authorities.
The stay at the embassy suggests that the former president was seeking to leverage his friendship with a fellow far-right leader, Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary, into an attempt to evade the Brazilian justice system as he faces criminal investigations at home.

Another unwelcome climate change milestone.
You may have heard about Taylor Swift cancelling a concert in Rio de Janeiro because of the heat. This is how hot it was.
The record was hit on Sunday in the town of Araçuaí, in Brazil's south-eastern state of Minas Gerais. The unprecedented weather has been attributed to the El Niño phenomenon and climate change. Forecasters say some of the heat is likely to ease this week. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), only three state capitals will see temperatures approaching 40C, CNN Brasil reported. The government agency said Araçuaí's high of 44.8C had beaten the country's previous record of 44.7C, measured in 2005. The heat has seen red alerts issued across the country, weeks before the beginning of summer in the southern hemisphere. Brazil's energy consumption has soared to record levels as people try to keep themselves cool.
The state of Minas Gerais is located in between Rio and the national capital Brasília. It is not a remote area. And in the Southern Hemisphere, this is the equivalent of mid to late spring. To paraphrase Ned Stark, Summer is coming.
The high temperatures led to Taylor Swift cancelling one of her concerts in Rio de Janeiro after a fan fell ill and died before a show on Friday. According to the organisers, 23-year-old Ana Clara Benevides Machado had sought help at the stadium after feeling unwell. She was transferred to hospital but died one hour later. Official research released two weeks ago showed that the average temperature in the country had been above the historical average from July to October. Extreme weather is becoming more frequent and more intense in many places around the world because of climate change.
Climate deniers may try to blame the record heat on the latest El Niño. But that ignores the fact that it hadn't gotten this hot in Brazil during any of the previous recurring El Niños.
This is yet another indication that climate change is testing the limits of where humans can survive.
Brazil's previous president, Jair Bolsonaro, gave the green light to deforestation of the Amazon rainforest. The neo-fascist "Trump of the Tropics" in three years during his term oversaw the deforestation of an area larger than Belgium.
Tumblr media
Bolsonaro in his own way added to the misery Brazil is currently experiencing. He is a climate traitor to his own country.

Brazil's Bolsonaro Is Indicted For First Time Over Alleged Falsification Of Own COVID Data
It's the first indictment for the embattled far-right leader with others potentially in store.
Tumblr media
Brazil’s Federal Police have accused former President Jair Bolsonaro of criminal association and falsifying his own COVID-19 vaccination data, marking the first indictment for the embattled far-right leader with others potentially in store.
The Supreme Court released the police’s indictment on Tuesday that alleges Bolsonaro and 16 others inserted false information into the public health database to make it appear as though the then-president, his 12-year-old daughter and several others in his circle had received the COVID-19 vaccine.
During the pandemic, Bolsonaro was one of the few world leaders railing against the vaccine, openly flouting health restrictions and encouraging society to follow his example. His administration ignored several emails from pharmaceutical company Pfizer offering to sell Brazil tens of millions of shots in 2020 and openly criticized a move by Sao Paulo state’s then-Gov. João Doria to buy vaccines from Chinese company Sinovac when no jabs were otherwise available.
Brazil’s prosecutor-general’s office will have the final say on whether to use the police indictment to file charges against Bolsonaro at the Supreme Court. It stems from one of several investigations targeting Bolsonaro, who governed between 2019 and 2022.
