#Jake Peralta adhd

I feel like sitcoms from the Golden Age (2000s and early 2010s) would often make too much fun of autistic people. Even the sitcoms that are my favourites, such as Brooklyn Nine Nine and Modern Family are quite harsh (don't get me wrong, they're still some of the greatest ones) and would only have main characters with traits of ADHD (such as Luke and Phil from Modern Family and Jake from B99), which is great, but never autistic ones. Characters with autistic traits would often get made fun for their traits.
What I think Community did waaaay better than any of them is that they have a canonically autistic main character and his autistic traits are embraced. Literally no one makes fun of Abed (the autistic character) except for that 1 time Jeff says he has "Asperger's" as an insult. Other than that none of the main characters ridicule Abed for his autism and treat him with respect and as a regular human being.
What I also like is that they're not acting like Abed hasn't struggled at all. They don't act like autistic people never suffer. Abed still has been bullied. Some people still call him weird and so on. However Abed has found his people. He has his found family that love him and I think it's pretty big and amazing that a show made in 2009 went this far.
Other than that Community also has a character with ADHD traits (Troy, maybe someone else too) and has PLENTY of LGBT+ content. I would definitely recommend it.
(i love community)

Me to my therapist: Sometimes I feel like the wild love child of Evan Buckley and Jake Peralta
*Next session*
My therapist: I couldn't stop thinking of what you said last week. I read about these two characters, then I review our sessions notes lately and today I will ask you some questions. I think you might actually have ADHD and we will try to prove it alright?
Me:...Say what now?

It bothers me still that Andy Samberg and Jack Black amongst others fully participated in the Color the Spectrum campaign even though autistic adults who have followed these figures tried to bring to their attention the fact that fundraisers promoting ABA are ableist conversion-therapy funding bullshit that don't even involve any actual autistic people having any say in it. And it bothers me further that supposedly progressive people keep hyping up these figures and these seems little backlash that's big enough for them to even notice. This isn't to shame people who admire these celebrities, there's always going to be some "unproblematic white man" celebrity or another that the internet latches onto, and I'd go so far as to not even immediately assume anything other than ignorance on the part of these two men, but the fact is that the most influence that can be had is from their own fanbase.
I wish the people who post so much about Black and Samberg hyping them up all the time and bring up School of Rock in every other conversation would devote some time at least to join in those autistic voices that had tried to reach out to these very influential men. People like these who are seen as paragons of virtue while having a huge following could make a huge difference in ending the honestly torturous techniques that these ABA therapies are developing. Y'all talk a big game about holding people accountable but it only ever follows after someone already pisses you off and it's always about punishing people rather than trying to change their behaviour in a way that actually benefits marginalised folk.
Calling out ableism isn't just for vague old tweets from some small creator whom you found cringe, it's also for celebrities you actively like whose involvement in these movements has major impacts. Read what autistic people have said about ABA if you aren't aware, but surely if you believe these idols to be the good people that they are, they would be willing to learn to be better? Or do us autistics have to wait for them to do something cringe till you will get mad enough to bring it up?

You know, I was expecting to find this Brooklyn 99 rewatch somewhat uncomfortable due to the blatant copaganda, absolutely, but I'd completely forgotten how upsetting I always find it when a character clearly has ADHD and the people around them respond with attempting shaming and criticism along the "needs to grow up, start taking things seriously" etc lines.

I have a theory. and- i’m fully aware people have thought of this but i just realized it so.
Several times throughout Brooklyn-99, characters tell Jake to ‘sit still’ and get mad at him for not being able to pay attention. He has trouble focusing, and it’s usually chalked up to him being immature, but i think Jake has ADHD.
When we see shots of his desk area, it’s covered with trinkets and objects that could be used as fidgets. In season 2 episode 20, Terry asks Jake why he ‘can’t sit still’, which is a really common thing to tell people with ADHD. In The Crime Scene, Jake hyperfixates on a case for months, even after he has to give up the case. We see examples of him fixating on his job all through the show.
In conclusion. Jake Peralta has ADHD.

I don't project ADHD and/or Autism onto characters, I just perceive

I really want Captain Holt and Kevin from Brooklyn Nine-Nine to be my dads.
They're so sweet and would accept my gender confusion!

Had a little cry about my ADHD and relationship with my mum, so I'm watching comfort TV and remembering that most of my favourite fictional characters are ADHD coded

thinking about how Nick Miller probably had adhd and was honestly one of the fucking weirdest characters on prime time television and yet after years of thinking I am nothing like this man and could never identify with him, I understand and identify with him the fucking most of all the characters on New Girl
