This is Transmitter Brewing’s last weekend in Long Island City
Tumblr media
Transmitter’s LIC brewery in 2015 (Photo via Instagram)
Transmitter Brewing will sell its last bottle in Long Island City this Saturday, as it prepares for its move to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Their Long Island City brewery, located practically under the Pulaski Bridge that spans Newtown Creek, has been open since 2014, gradually growing within its tight confines. That space quickly maxed out as the brewery expanded production, and eventually made Transmitter the only “no-tap taproom” in New York -- exclusively pouring beer from bottles at their tasting room even as kegs rolled out the door.
Tumblr media

The move to the Navy Yard will vastly expand their capacity, and will allow the brewery to introduce its first true taproom. The brewery will be in the newly-renovated Building 77 (141 Flushing Avenue), sharing a building with other food and beverage manufacturers including Russ and Daughters and Jalapa Jar Salsas. Transmitter hopes to open their doors to the public there by early May.
The final days in the LIC brewery will be this Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, March 28th through 30th.

Coachella Eats and Drinks
These days, a good portion of my festival experience is spent tasting, sipping and munching on some wonderfully delicious things. Festivals like Coachella provide attendees with the opportunity to try new foods from well known restaurants to brand new food trucks. I really like taking the time to see all my options and letting my tastebuds explore at a festival.
This year at Coachella, there will be over 100 vendors. While some are separate with only VIP access, there’s still a lot to be explored in the GA spaces as well. The food and drink at Coachella is another great reason to arrive early. I did some reading on everything offered at Coachella this year, and pulled some bullet points together of what sounds like things I would want to try.
Location: Craft Beer Barn - GA Admission
Beer Belly - offers duck fat fries and grilled cheese with bacon
Bludso’s - The best BBQ in LA, offering slow-smoked meats Texas style
Fat Dragon - tea bar and custom flavored fortune cookies
Tumblr media
Location: VIP - VIP Admission
Hanjip Korean BBQ - enough said
The Venue Sushi - sushi bar and sake lounge
Location: The Boardwalk - GA Admission
Jalapa Jar - they specialize in salsa...I mean I’d try...
Little Fatty - Chinese food
Fritz Coop - batterless fried chicken
Sweet Combforts - Belgium Liege waffles...on a stick. These will be in all the Instas for sure
Location: Food South - GA Admission
Mallow Mallow - fancy s’mores!
Matchabar - I’m super into matcha right now, so this is something I’d try
Tumblr media
Outstanding in the Field - I also just learned about this family style, sit down dinner you can sign up for if you have a festival pass. It’s a four-course meal, and isn’t cheap, but is a cool idea to explore. Dinner costs $225. Check out the lineup of chefs they have doing the meals.
What’s interesting though, by looking at this meal plan, I noticed you can still buy GA festival passes (as long as you buy one of the dinners). Interesting to know if someone was DESPERATE to get a ticket to Coachella...they’re actually still available for purchase this way...
Tumblr media
Pop Up Restaurants - are only available to access via VIP. You can book reservations in advance through Open Table, or just walk up to be served. There are three pop up restaurants this year: Kindred (vegan), Little Sister (East-meets-West), and Playa Provisions (gastro-pub).
Now, let’s talk booze. Coachella has beer gardens scattered throughout the festival. They sell craft on draft, mixed cocktails and cold beer. Some end up more crowded than others (by the main stage, always more crowded), so scope out the location for them all so you can hop around if you need to. Here’s what you need to know:
Craft Beer Barn - local, regional craft beers on tap. What’s cool to check out here is Beer Belly’s Rare Beer Bar that features limited and rare releases, intros and bottle cellar. It changes daily, so if this is your sort of thing come back each day!
Craft on Draft - this means craft cocktails on draft. Coachella hosts the largest craft cocktail offering in the world, so to help dispense these drinks fresher, colder and quicker, they come from stainless steel draft systems. Shane McKnight has been the Coachella craft cocktail curator for 7 years, so he knows what he’s doing.
VIP only - Broken Shaker - handcrafted cocktails made with exotic ingredients from around the world
PDT - NYC’s celebrated speakeasy will be making it’s Coachella debut this year offering high end cocktails. PDT stands for Please Don’t Tell
The Cabin - premium whiskeys and top-shelf craft cocktails offering a mountain atmosphere in the desert
213 Bars - a collection of bars from LA
Heineken House - basically a giant house party, the Heineken House has its own lineup which is amazing to say the least. I find myself hanging out at the Heineken House at many festivals
Tumblr media
So just a few more reasons to get excited to be at Coachella! Even if you think you can’t budget for it, try to budget for one unique meal or snack a day at the festival. Do your research ahead of time so you know all your options and you won’t regret the little splurge!

Coming Attractions: 2019′s NYC Brewery Openings
Tumblr media
Some future members of the New York City Brewing Class of 2019
New York City now has 40 breweries across its five boroughs -- a far cry from the four that were open when we started this site nearly a decade ago. While that may seem like a lot, on a per capita basis, the city is well below the national average; New York City has 0.6 breweries per 100,000 people aged 21+. If the city were a state, we’d rank dead last in breweries per capita, just behind Mississippi. Obviously, the simple cost of entry in the city helps keep the number low here, but every year, the number of breweries in the city keeps growing... and that won’t stop this year. Here are some of the forthcoming breweries that will help add to that number in 2019.
Tumblr media
(Photo via Instagram)
Evil Twin Brewing, Ridgewood, Queens
It’s probably one of the most anticipated openings of 2019. Jeppe Jarnit-Bjergso’s long-running nomadic brewing company has a future home in Ridgewood, Queens, off the Halsey Street stop on the L Train. It’s the first time he’ll have control of a brewery where Evil Twin beer is made, so the small batches will be brewed without compromise. A spacious taproom will open on the premeses, along with a food truck to complement some of Evil Twin’s well-known high-gravity beers.
Tumblr media
(Photo via Instagram)
Wild East Brewing Co., Gowanus, Brooklyn
Long in planning, co-founders Brett Taylor, Tyler March and Lindsay Steen landed on a space for their brewery on Sackett Street in Gowanus late last year. True to their name, the beers will use “traditional Belgian brewing techniques with modern American craft beer innovations,” promising an array of IPAs, pilsners, farmhouse-style ales, barrel-aged sours and more.
Tumblr media

Torch & Crown Brewing Company, SoHo, Manhattan
Manhattan’s only production brewery will open this year at Sixth Avenue and Vandam Street. Torch & Crown’s goal was to bring craft brewing culture closer to the masses, choosing a daunting central location over other NYC breweries off the beaten path. They’ve already rolled out two beers, a Hazy IPA and a Dry-Hopped Lager, with much more to come, including a taproom at their SoHo brewery.
Tumblr media
(Photo via Instagram)
Greenpoint Beer & Ale Co., Greenpoint, Brooklyn
After a raucous New Year’s Eve party, the original location of Greenpoint Beer & Ale Co. on North 15th Street closed its doors to prep for a move up the street. The transition is happening quickly, with fermenters already landing in the new space, as pictured above. The new location, on Manhattan Avenue near Ash Street, will have some of the same creature comforts of the old location (including a skylight), and is slated for a springtime opening.

Transmitter Brewing, Navy Yard, Brooklyn
One of several existing New York City breweries to add a location in 2019 will be Transmitter Brewing. After five years in a maxed-out space under the Pulaski Bridge, they will expand into the bustling Brooklyn Navy Yard’s newly-renovated Building 77 at Flushing and Vanderbilt Avenues with a brewery and taproom. Transmitter will join several other food production tenants in the first floor of the space, including Russ and Daughters and Jalapa Jar.
Others to watch for:
Folksbier is building out a new brewery on Dikeman Street in Red Hook that will significantly increase its production capacity.
Finback Brewery has started work on a second production facility in Brooklyn, on President Street in Gowanus.
ICONYC Brewing Company has taken delivery of new equipment at their forthcoming larger facility and tasting room in Long Island City, Queens.
Big aLICe Brewing has announced a barrel room and taproom at Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Let’s talk about VariEATy
We’ve been contacted by the very nice people at Variety, the Children’s Charity. They help disadvantaged youth and communities through therapeutic and life transforming art therapy.
Where do we come in? Well, glad you asked:
They are running a fundraiser the week of April 29th-May 6th called VariEATy, and, if you couldn’t guess, it involves food trucks. A percentage of the money that you spend at the following trucks that week will be donated to this worthy cause:
Gooey & Co.
Butter & Scotch
Jalapa Jar
Coolhaus
Wafels & Dinges
We’ll send you reminders as we get closer to the dates and as they add more trucks.
