Reality and delirium became one and the same. You weren’t sure if you were conscious or not when you heard your name being called through the void. It wasn’t until your back hit the raft and the cold evening air hit your sodden skin that you were certain you were alive. With a deep gasp, you filled your lungs back with air, coughing up the last of the water you had swallowed.
You tried to thrash, not sure if you were safe or not, but your flailing limbs were held firmly.
“You’re okay,” you heard the familiar southern twang.
Your eyes shot open to take in the darkness of the night sky in the middle of the ocean. You could have been unconscious for a second or an hour, and the remnants of the raft could have floated anywhere in that time. Barely any of the raft was still floating with Sawyer and Michael still there with you, Jin and Walt no longer visible in the night.
“Sawyer,” you whispered.
The only warmth to you came from your heart. The thought of him calling for you, searching to save you, gave you some kind of hope for the two of you, even if it could just be a sign he was a decent human being- both outcomes were equally unlikely.
A weak smile curled onto your lips as you reached out a hand to rest on top of his.
“What’re you smiling at?” He asked, thinking you had completely lost your mind to have found any form of joy in your circumstances.
“You were calling for me,” you croaked. “You do care.”
Sawyer rolled his eyes at you. Deep down part of him did care and when he breached the waters surface and couldn’t find you, he felt a pain that he had never felt before, one that wasn’t coming from the gunshot to his shoulder.
“I was also calling for Jin,” he stated.
You gave his hand a squeeze. “Don’t ruin the moment.”
You sat up on what was left of the raft. There was barely anything that was left of it, nearly all the supplies gone, leaving the three of you in a worse state than you had been before. You turned your attention back to Sawyer, red merging into the general wetness of his shirt.
“You’re hurt,” you whispered, your head still a little bleary.
“I was shot sweetheart and hauled your arse back up here,” he huffed. “But I’ve got bigger worries than a bullet.”

Is This What You Wanted
Tumblr media
Chapter three of the Miracle Aligner series
Warnings: Smut, swearing
Alex's POV
Reluctantly, my eyes peel open to reveal a bright daze of sunlight, seeping through the blinds of my hotel suite. I slowly shift and stretch my aching limbs, completely disoriented. Symptoms of a hangover begin to arise and I groan in discomfort.
Rising to my feet, I head to the restroom, paying no mind to the clothes that littered my bedroom floor. It was only until I glanced at the mirror that was I reminded of the night before.
Red bruises decorated my chest to my jaw. Though, one spot in particular was more significant than the rest: a bite mark that covers the left side of my neck. My lips part loosely at the sight.
Suddenly, my skull starts pounding as visions of last night's events cloud my mind.
1:57 am
After roughly swiping my key card, the force of Jennie's kiss causes my back to bang against the front door of my room, now awkwardly fiddling with its knob.
The door swings open and I flip our bodies around, backing her towards the bed with urgency. Our moans intermix as our mouths move together fervently and our tongues collide, fighting for dominance. I grip her body for support. I was utterly intoxicated by her cherry taste.
Jennie then rips away from the kiss to take a breath and I instinctively chase after her. My hunger for her was insatiable, and I could tell from the lustful look in her eyes, that the feeling was mutual.
I smirk as I regard her beautifully flushed face, dimly lit by the golden bedside lamp I left on. I affectionately caress the smear of faded lipstick that adorned her lips, and I imagine my own.
I touch my forehead to hers and her eyes flutter closed. I observe her chest rise and fall as we mellow out.
My own chest does the same, my heart hammering widely against my ribs.
"Stunning Red." My compliment makes Jennie's eyes open, peering up. She grins instantly and I shudder at the sight. Her eyes flare with a wicked thought.
Unexpectedly, Jennie drops to her knees in front of me, hands sliding down my chest until they reach my thighs. My jaw drops at once. "Christ," is all I can muster as her hands rise to meet my belt buckle. The clasp opens and I rejoice in the release of my waistband. My head tilts back. When she draws me out of my slacks I whimper, "Jennie."
"Alexander," she replies pleasantly as if she isn't holding my cock in her fist. Becoming exasperated by her attitude, I warn, "Don't start."
"Okay." She politely utters, abruptly dropping her hands from my body. My eyes go wide and my head shoots to look at her knelt-down frame. "Don't be a tease, you know what I meant," I growl at her.
Till I met this woman, I didn't know just how pent-up I'd been. I feel as though I've been unleashed and now need her more than anything.
Without hesitation, I pluck her up from the ground and toss her onto my bed, making her yelp. I briefly gape at her scrambling on her back, shuffling the bed sheets around. Looking at her I demand, "Fuck, tell me what you need."
...
"Fuck." I rub my hand coarsely against my slack jaw. My eyes then pop in my reflection. Rushing back to my bed, I behold the empty mattress. Disappointment blackens my chest.
The redhead from yesterday was nowhere to be seen. My shoulders slump in defeat.
Surely last night had not been so bad she had to flee at dawn? From what I could recall, that was not the case. So where had she gone?
Glancing to my right, I take in the mess of papers scattered across my desk. Making my way over to it, I noticed the newfound placement of my sheets meant my lyrics were read by my recent guest. Reading them now, I can't help but be self-conscious. They really were grim, and seeing how things turned out last night, Zach and James had a point.
Millions of ideas were racing through my mind; I couldn't stop the urge I had to sit and write, thinking about what happened hours ago.
"Anything you need, tell him what you're needing."
"Get down on your knees, get down on your knees again."
2:08 am
My bare body flattens against her lush one. I take mental notes of her figure, deliberately engraving every curve to memory.
Jennie flips us around, hovering above me with a sinful grin.
"What 'I' need?" Her sensual voice echoes throughout the room, and I nearly melt into the sheets.
A groan is the only response she receives before slamming our lips together, and I react energetically.
Our bodies interlace and I place one hand between her shoulder blades, and the other through her red locks, gripping it at its roots as my mouth deepens the desperate kiss. Her arm, in turn, wraps behind my neck, embracing me, while the other gropes my tricep. Jennie then wrenches her lips from mine, "What I need is you inside me Alexander."
I stare at her awe-stricken, my thoughts incoherent. To stop myself from almost begging, I attach our lips once again in confirmation. Jennie straddles my waist while her palms enthusiastically roam my body. When our lips break apart, I study her aligning her base with mine, marvelling at how heavenly she looks as she rips open a condom.
I suck in a sharp breath once my tip pierces her entrance.
...
"You're hovering above my bed looking down on me."
"Dracula teeth, lipstick on my pillow via my cheek."
I smirk mindlessly at the page.
After two hours of pensive reminisce of yesterday's affair, I devised at least two songs worth of lyrics. I can already visualize the sound for them; their titles are as clear as day, and dedicated to my mystery woman.
My phone's incessant buzzing takes me out of my thoughts. Moving towards my bedside table, I click on the text notifications, ignoring the 27 missed calls covering my lock screen. With a scowl, I begin to read my texts.
8:46 a.m. Zach: Where the fuck are you? I get you're still upset but we've got work to do Al.
9: 27 a.m. Miles: Darling I've been calling you non-stop. Pick up if you're alive.
12:31 a.m. Jaime: OOOIIIIIII
Just before I close the app, I notice a text from an unknown number.
1:03 p.m. (1+416-555-0144): Heyyyyy it's Mickey (the bartender from last night)!! You left your 🎸 here. If you don't come and get it, it may or may not be sold on ebay ;))))
Immediately I wince. After Red took me by surprise, I clearly neglected to remember the $3,000 guitar I travelled with. My favourite guitar. I wail out a cry of frustration. Then I pause. Now I had an excuse to see her again.
I bolt around the room, grasping at clothes left and right, then heaving on my boots. Hurriedly, I search Les Cactus on Google Maps and head straight for the door.

James Sawyer Ford x Fem! reader - Tent Buddies
Word count: 1075
Summary: Imagine having to stay in Sawyer’s tent because you broke your ankle and every other tent is full.
Warnings: none, I think
Tumblr media
“No! You don’t have to carry me! I’ll be all right!” you said, but it was already too late. “You cannot walk all the way back to camp. Have you taken a good look at your ankle? It normally does not look like that”, Sayid said, as he lifted you over his shoulder. You sighed. Your ankle did hurt really bad, but now you felt like a burden. “I’m sorry, Sayid”, you said. “Don’t be, I’ll be fine. Your ankle on the other hand...” You winced as you tried to move your foot. “Stop that and just relax.” Thunder rumbled in the distance. “There’s a storm coming. I’m sorry, but we’re going to need to hurry a bit.” Sayid started to jog a little faster, causing your legs to bounce up and down a bit, making you slowly cry out in pain. “It’s not far anymore, I promise.” You nodded, trying to hold back tears at the same time.
“Jack!” Sayid yelled as he entered the camp. Jack hurried out of his tent. “What happened?” he asked. “Y/N accidentally stepped into a hole in the forest and, well... her ankle...” “Yeah that’s not looking good.” Jack got a worried look on his face. “I have two other patients in my tent, so I’ll have to treat you here. I’m sorry Y/N. It won’t be comfortable, but I have no other choice.” You groaned. “Just do it. Just make the pain go away.” Jack hurried to his tent to  grab some medical supplies and a sheet for you to lay down on. “Now, I am going to have to set your ankle. This will hurt, but only for a few seconds, okay?” You nodded, signifying that you understood and that he could continu. “Here, you might want to bite down on this.” He gave you a wooden stick. “Really?” you asked, annoyed. “This is so medieval.” “Trust me, okay?” You sighed and put the stick in-between your teeth. Jack put his hands around your ankle, making you wince in pain. “On three. One... two...” and as he said ‘two’ he pushed your broken bones back into place with a loud ‘crack’. You bit the stick as hard as you could and cried out in pain. “That was it! The worst is over!” Jack tried to comfort you,but you thought you were going to faint from the pain. “Y/N? Stay with me!” Jack shouted. “I’m okay”, you managed to mumble. Jack returned to his work. He had managed to make a pretty decent splint. “Normally, I would have asked you what colour cast you wanted, but since there’s not much choice, I’m afraid you’ll have to do with white”, he said, motioning to the white sheets he used to bind your ankle. You chuckled. “Thanks doc.” Big drops of water started to fall from the sky and the thunder started to get closer. Jack looked up at the sky. “There’s a storm coming. Where is your tent?” “I haven’t got a tent. I have just been sleeping outside.” “Shit. Sayid! Can you help me carry Y/N? We need to find her a tent to stay in.” “But the only tent where there’s still some room is...” “Yeah I know,” Jack interrupted Sayid, “but we haven’t got a choice. He doesn’t have a choice.” “He?” you thought. Who were they talking about?  Jack and Sawyer carried you to one of the tents. “Sawyer?” Jack asked. Your eyes widened. “Oh no,” you thought to yourself. You have had a crush on Sawyer from the moment you had met him on the first day after the crash. It was pointless, however. You knew he had feelings for Kate, or so you thought, at least. “No,” Sawyer said from inside his tent. Sayid angrily pulled back the plastic blue tarp. “This is not a time for jokes, Sawyer. You’re going to agree to this whether you like it or not.” “Exactly to what do you want me to agree?” Sawyer asked, annoyed. “To let Y/N stay in your tent,” Jack stepped in. “I know you don’t particularly like company, but Y/N doesn’t have a tent to stay in and every other tent is taken.” “Why can’t she just sleep outside? It’s a lovely beach,” Sawyer said, without looking up from his book. “Because I had to reset the bones in her ankle just minutes ago and there’s a huge storm coming straigh towards us.” Sawyer sighed. “Fine. But you owe me,” he pointed towards Jack. Jack nodded and motioned to Sayid to get you from outside. “Congratulations on your new home, Y/N,” Sayid said and he carried you inside.
It took some time for you to get comfortable, since there wasn’t really any soft surface for you to lay down on. “I love what you did with the place,” you said, in an attempt to lighten the mood. “Thank you. Lucky for me, my favourite colour is blue,” Sawyer said, motioning to the blue tarp. You chuckled. He continued reading. “I like your glasses,” you said. “Hm?” “Your glasses, I like them.” “Thank you. Do they make me look smart?” “Very. What are you reading.” Sawyer held his book up to you so you could read the title: ‘Braveheart’. “Is it any good?” “It’s all right. Do you want a book?” “Yes please! I am bored out of my mind!” “Let me see what I’ve got for you.” Sawyer started rummaging through his collection of books. “Robinson Crusoe? Lord of the Flies?” “How fitting,” you said, sarcastically. Sawyer let out a small chuckle. “Aha, maybe this one?” He held up ‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’. “Yeah I’ll take it.” Sawyer moved towards you to hand you the book. “Oh wait!” you slapped your head in a dramatic manner. “How stupid of me! I’m so sorry but I don’t have my librarycard with me.” Sawyer looked confused at first, but then he smiled. “You’re a funny one. But it’s all right. Only this once, though.” “Thank you.” You stretched out your arm to take the book. “It’s all right if you take off your shirt.” You immediately retracted your arm. “What?” “I’m kidding! I’m kidding!” He urged you to take the book and you did. “You can make it up to me once that leg of yours has healed,” he said with a wink. You could feel your cheeks starting to turn red and you quickly opened your book, hiding your face behind it.

Pairing: Penelope Ford/Delilah James Quote: Swingers? What is a swinger? Verse: Music Mentions of [here].
Tumblr media
It was always weird when you got to meet your ex’s new partner. Penelope Ford could attest to that. There were times when she had been the new girlfriend, meeting the women she had replaced. Most of the time it was as a taunt, her boyfriends showing their exes how they had upgraded. A part of her would always feel selfish, feel bad for the old girlfriends, but she always knew there was a reason. Penelope knew she was beautiful. Her long blonde hair always laid loose on her shoulders. Her icy blue eyes always popped because she wore makeup that complimented both her features and her outfits. Penelope also knew she was talented. She sang vocals for her band, a female pop-punk group called Bubblegum Ambition, but she was also a guitar player. She loved music more than she loved most people, including her former boyfriend Joey Janella. The duo had often played the same festivals, Penelope with her girls and Joey with his band Air Raid Crash. It was a good relationship until Bubblegum Ambition had become more and more popular, getting more attention than Air Raid Crash. The two had started arguing more and more until they realized they were better off as friends. That’s why Penelope had agreed to be the other woman in the situation, the woman meeting the new girlfriend. The little beachside club was nice, nicer than anything Penelope had expected for someone Joey was dating. Penelope glanced around the nice décor, the music being played by the woman at the piano jazzy and upbeat. Again, it wasn’t something that Penelope had expected, nor did she expect the cute woman playing the piano. “Miss? You wouldn’t happen to know where Joey Janella is, would you?” Penelope questioned as she took a spot on a chair near the piano. The brunette glanced over at Penelope and the blonde took a deep breath. She was stunning. Not in a modern sense, but as a classical beauty. This woman was stunning in the way that Monroe or Davis were stunning. Her chocolate brown eyes seemed to stare through Penelope’s soul. “Oh! My Joey isn’t here. I’m Delilah.” Penelope gave a soft sigh. Her Joey. This was the new woman. Was this how she had made so many people feel in the past? “Oh…well…I should go then. Can you…” “He’s not the one who called you. I was,” Delilah smiled, “You’re the lead singer of your own band, right? Bubblegum Ambition?” Penelope cocked her head to the side, intrigued. She felt like this could be a trap, but Delilah didn’t seem like the type, “Yeah, I sing for Bubblegum Ambition. Play the guitar too. And you? You obviously play piano. Are you in a band?” “Oh no, no. I’m a swinger,” Delilah dismissed with a giggle. Penelope was glad she didn’t have anything in her mouth or she would have choked. Maybe Joey’s new girl wasn’t as innocent as she thought. “Uh…swinger? What’s a swinger?” Penelope couldn’t help but notice how Delilah seemed to turn a soft shade of pink. “Oh no! I’m not a…well…I didn’t mean it like that. I play swing music! Ellington, Armstrong. That kind of thing.” “Takes talent to do that, baby girl,” Penelope grinned, “bet you have it in spades. But…if that’s your music, why call me?” “I…well…I was thinking maybe…” Delilah hesitated, running a hand over the back of her neck, “maybe I could play with you.”

THE BEST OF DANIEL BRÜHL
Tumblr media
It’s dumb, honestly.
You get this seemingly brilliant idea of turning to foreign films so you’re forced to read subtitles and focus—a problem you’ve been noticing of late—but in doing so, you end up with a more destructive distraction.
“Who’s that guy, again? The one in all those international productions?” That’s how I found myself on my Daniel Brühl marathon-turned-obsession.
It was his role as the cute Nazi in Inglorious Basterds that first put him on my radar. Over the years, I would see him in The Fifth Estate, Burnt, Woman in Gold, The Zookeeper’s Wife, and The King’s Man. Midway through All Quiet on the Western Front, I was like, “All this needs is that German actor…” and I had to chuckle when he later appeared on screen. I also checked out the first season of The Alienist because I was intrigued by what he and Dakota Fanning as leads would do with such a spooky-looking show.
Adorable as he was in his breakout role in Good Bye, Lenin!, it was his performance in the critically-acclaimed Rush that caused me to spiral. Similar to when Benedict Cumberbatch took on the modern version of Sherlock, it was like seeing Brühl with new eyes. His playful take on Helmut Zemo in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was the final nail in the coffin. I don’t imagine it’s all too different from what Tom Hiddleston did to fans of Marvel as Loki.
I’m actually at the tail-end of this obsession now that I’ve seen everything I can get a hold of—around 39 films, two TV shows, a documentary, a music video, countless interviews, a bunch of ads, and a handful of fan cuts—but he has a lot of works worth recommending so I thought I would share them on here. This will mostly be a subjective list with priority on projects I found most interesting which showcase his range best. Like, I enjoyed The Bourne Ultimatum but he was on screen for a total of 2 minutes so I wouldn’t include that here.
Tumblr media
RUSH (2013) This biographical sports film written by Peter Morgan—the man behind The Crown—centers on the rivalry between Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda in the 70s. Not a fan of F1 or sports in general. I have nothing against either, just zero interest. But this character-driven film, much like Ford vs Ferrari, had me at the edge of my seat the entire ride. And it surprisingly has one of the best meet-cutes—and accidental wingmen—I’ve seen yet.
Brühl delivers an Oscar-worthy performance in this role. For someone who needed a lot of convincing he could do the character justice, he truly went above and beyond. For one, he befriended and studied Lauda, the iconic F1 figure he was portraying. No easy feat considering Lauda being, well… Lauda. In interviews, Brühl recounts the story of the memorable invite he got from Lauda to meet in Vienna. This would be their first meeting and Lauda told Brühl outright that he should only bring hand luggage so he can piss off if they don’t like each other.
He would end up staying a few days and buying additional clothes.
He also spent a month in Vienna to nail the accent, making sure to capture the arrogance and irony innate to it. And although he got driver training for the role, he also considered the tiniest details like which went on first: helmet or gloves? There was also the tricky business of looking graceful entering a tiny F1 car—a bigger challenge for Chris Hemsworth who plays Hunt—but an obstacle all the same.
All the hard work paid off. It was well-received by audiences, critics, and the F1 world. The first time Lauda saw the film he went, “Holy shit, that’s really me”. Lauda’s friends thought he did voiceover work for it. Director Ron Howard was so pleased with Brühl’s performance that he went out of his way to show an unfinished cut of the movie to the producers of The Fifth Estate (2013). This gracious act would land Brühl the co-lead role opposite Benedict Cumberbatch.
Tumblr media
GOOD BYE, LENIN! (2003) Can't tell if it's just because the two films have the same composer and were created around the same time, but this tragicomedy set in East Germany reminded me so much of my beloved Amélie. This is definitely more dramatic and political but it has that same mix of whimsy, heart, and charm. With its budget, it was meant to be an indie film, but the story of a son who would recreate a faux-socialist world to keep his mother alive captured the heartstrings of audiences, not just in Germany but also worldwide. Brühl plays the son and his success with this film was a double-edged sword: although it would open doors for him internationally, he would also be typecast as the “nice guy” in his home country.
Tumblr media
INGLORIOUS BASTERDS (2009) This has one of the best, most intense opening sequences in all of cinema… and one of the greatest villains. In this wild alternate universe from Quentin Tarantino, he rewrites the ending of World War II. It’s the right balance of dark, hilarious, and entertaining—my favorite from the auteur’s works. Here Brühl plays a cute and charming Nazi, which is very confusing to the senses.
Aside from Brühl, it was also my first introduction to Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender, and Melanie Laurent—all fantastic European actors who’ve crossed over to Hollywood after the success of this movie. “Crossing over” seems ubiquitous now but, at that time, giving most of the lead roles to then relatively unknown actors must have been a risk. But for this, it was necessary. Language plays a huge part in this trilingual film and casting native speakers grounded it in authenticity. Tarantino originally had Leonardo di Caprio in mind to play Hans Landa. Whether he meant for him to learn German or to speak English with a German accent, who knows. Either way, it’s safe to say that would have been a different film.
Tumblr media
THE EDUKATORS / DIE FETTEN JAHRE SIND VORBEI (2004) This anti-capitalist film, which has become a cult classic, captures the spirit, idealism, recklessness, and angst of young revolutionaries who just want a better world. Where one stands on the measures taken, or even their sentiment, can be considered a litmus test. With or without reference to this quote from the movie—“Under 30 and not liberal, no heart. Over 30 and still liberal, no brain.”—is up to the viewer.
There needs to be a suspension of disbelief for the series of events that takes place but the setting is necessary for the clash of worlds to happen. It’s not a perfect movie but the issues they debate about in length… they’re still discussions we’re having nearly 20 years later.
p.s. this has my favorite behind-the-scenes of all of Brühl’s projects. Though he hasn’t lost his sense of humor, he seems to have become more reserved as he got older. HERE, at this period in his life, he’s a total goofball bordering on loose cannon.
Tumblr media
THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER (2021) Though I’ve enjoyed quite a few MCU movies, I’m not invested in the universe at all, so watching this wasn’t a priority. In fact, I was ready to settle on YouTube compilations made by devoted fans of all the scenes Brühl was in. Upon seeing clips, however, I got intrigued by his character so I still ended up watching the miniseries and also Captain America: Civil War (2016).
Both were better than I expected. Civil War is more serious, while TFATWS is more playful, but both face relevant issues along with formidable foes. Brühl’s villain in Helmut Zemo is fascinating because he tears the mighty Avengers apart with mere patience, fury, and intelligence… and his motivations are understandable. He lets his character loose in TFATWS—at one point, on the dance floor—and it’s magnificent. His mission is still the same, but this time he does it with a lot of charm, humor, and fabulous Sokovian style. A Turkish delight, personified.
Tumblr media
ME AND KAMINSKI / ICH UND KAMINSKI (2015) Brühl’s Sebastian Zöllner is a repulsive and sleazy journalist who has greasy hair and wears too much cologne but I can’t get enough of his chaotic energy. His magnum opus is hitched on a legendary artist dying and his fantasy is to turn the orphaned daughter into a sugar mommy. It’s all kinds of messed up but he plays the hell out of the smarmy dirtbag so it’s a lot of fun. This is Brühl’s second collaboration with Wolfgang Becker, who directed Good Bye, Lenin! Daniel Kehlmann, the writer whose eponymous book this film was based on, would later write Brühl’s directorial debut, Nebenan.
Tumblr media
NO REGRETS / NICHTS BEUREUEN (2001) This is reminiscent of the slightly problematic but highly enjoyable teen comedies and coming-of-age films of the 90s. It’s like an edgier Can’t Hardly Wait: boy goes through cringe-worthy measures to get the girl he’s long been pining for, his two closest pals have nothing but dumb advice to offer, yet he still ends up on the path to self-discovery. It’s awkward, chaotic, frustrating, and beautiful—but such is adolescence.
Brühl and his co-star Jessica Schwarz fall in love on the set of this film. And although they would break up years later, the tenderness between their scenes together is palpable and there’s something rather bittersweet about seeing that captured in perpetuity.
Tumblr media
For a more straightforward rom-com, he has Lila, Lila (2009). It’s about a guy who passes off a manuscript as his own to impress a girl and the hilarity that follows. It’s on YouTube for those who need a fun and light watch.
Tumblr media
THE ALIENIST (2018 – 2020) Based on the novel of the same name, this moody psychological thriller set in late 19th century New York follows a psychiatrist—then called an Alienist—who investigates a series of grisly murders with methods still considered new and controversial at that time, such as psychology and fingerprinting. He gets by with a little help from his friends, John Moore, an illustrator for the New York Times, and Sara Howard, a society woman who works in the NYPD.
In the lead role of Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, Brühl plays the dark, complex, and mysterious Alienist whose study of mental pathologies and deviant behaviors reveals much of himself and his past.
Tumblr media
LESSONS OF A DREAM / DER GANZ GROßE TRAUM (2011) This film is loosely based on Konrad Koch, an educator and pioneer who brought football to Germany in the late 19th century. In the movie, the sport is used as a means to pique students’ interest in the English language and culture—both considered barbaric by the Germans at that time. A heartwarming tale of a teacher who overcomes insurmountable odds and inspires students along the way, it’s the German equivalent of Dead Poet’s Society.
Tumblr media
ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (2022) This story, the third adaptation of the 1929 novel, “Im Westen nichts Neues”, conveys the futility of war like no other. There aren't as many films on World War I as there are on World War II, fewer ones that tell it from a German perspective, so this is doubly unique in that regard. Powerful watch but 10/10 not like to relive it again. Apart from producing it with his company, Amusement Park, Brühl plays Matthias Erzberger, the German State Secretary who pushes for armistice talks with the Allied forces.
Tumblr media
An ideal companion watch to this would be Joyeux Noël / Merry Christmas (2005), another WWI movie Brühl stars in, which depicts the unbelievable Christmas truce between French, German, and Scottish soldiers in 1914. His linguistic ability shines here as he shifts between German, French, and English effortlessly. (Half German, half Spanish, Brühl speaks a total of five languages: those three plus Spanish and Catalan.)
Tumblr media
The Zookeeper’s Wife (2017) and Alone in Berlin (2016) also recognize the bravery of defiance at the height of tyrannical regimes. Although between the two, I would skip the latter.
Tumblr media
JOHN RABE (2009) This biographical film set in China tells the incredible true story of a German businessman who uses his Nazi Party membership to create an International Safety Zone in Nanking. This was in the late 1930s, during the Rape of Nanjing. In this six-week carnage by the Imperial Japanese Army—which includes sexual assault, mutilations, and killing contests—upwards of 200,000 Chinese are brutally murdered. The protective zone manages to save around the same number of civilians.
Brühl doesn’t play the titular Rabe, but his character, Dr. Georg Rosen, is one of few Westerners who decides to remain and protect Nanking even as conflict escalates. Dr. Rosen was a German Diplomat instrumental in the creation of the safety zone.
p.s. with all these heroic roles in his catalog, I’m convinced Brühl would be a frontrunner to play President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, should a movie be made about him and Ukraine’s conflict with Russia. You heard it here first.
Tumblr media
NEXT DOOR / NEBENAN (2021) This is Brühl’s directorial debut. Here he plays a darker, fictionalized version of himself. Definitely not for everyone but quite enjoyable if you’re familiar with his major works and public persona, appreciate the ingenuity of one-location movies, and delight in British-style meta humor.
Pre-requisite viewing for maximum enjoyment: Good Bye, Lenin!, Captain America: Civil War, and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

Raft- James Ford (1)
Tumblr media
Pairing: James Ford x Reader
Characters: James Ford
Warnings: N/A
Request: N/A
Word Count: 401
Author: Charlotte
Sawyer did everything in his power to make it clear to you that he did not care about you. The fact that you were only one of a few survivors floating on a bundle of sticks in the middle of the ocean, didn’t seem to mean anything to him, instead the two of you were nothingness. On the island he had seemed to care for a moment, or maybe you just wanted to see that; maybe you just wanted to see something more between you other than your physical relations. You tried to ignore how much that hurt though, to be used and discarded and seen as nothing worth a second look but even the knowledge that once you found help for your fellow survivors, then you’d be unlikely to ever be in contact again.
It had been futile hope though. It was not much of a raft and there were only just enough supplies for the five of you to survive with if you were lucky enough to find land or another vessel soon and if you weren’t that lucky, then you had no idea what you were going to do. That quickly stopped becoming a problem. You didn’t know how far out the raft have travelled when hope grew, and you found a ship.
Time travelled quickly and slowly at once. With the help of a flare, the ship sailed up to the raft, but it wasn’t the saviour you had wanted. In the flash of an eye Sawyer was shot and flung off the raft into the water, Jin swiftly following to save him. Both you and Michael went to defend Walt, but it didn’t matter what you did because he was taken from you without mercy. You were doing your best to keep your balance as an item was thrown onto the raft. You had no idea what it was but the panic in Michael’s eyes told you everything you needed. Before you could decide what to do, Michael gave you a shove, jumping into the water behind you.
You weren’t even fully submerged before the raft was engulfed in flames, wreckage flying out in all directions.
A chunk of one of the logs flew out of the raft, the water not breaking its force before it slammed into your back. The wind in your lungs was shot out, being replaced by water as darkness consumed you.

The Element of Surprise

Chapter four of the Miracle Aligner series
Alex's POV
It didn't take me long to arrive at the pub. Practically sprinting in, I spot Mickey raising a chair off a table. "Mickey?" I call with uncertainty. His head shoots in my direction. Upon seeing me, a blinding smile envelops his face and I nearly spin back out the door. "Alex Turner!" He shouts and I immediately recoil. Realizing his mistake of announcing my name, he slaps a hand over his mouth. "Sorry," he apologizes in a muffle, stalking towards me. "It's alright mate." We both then stand there awkwardly, unspeaking. "The guitar Mick," I voice plainly, snapping him out of whatever trance he's in. "Shit sorry!" He gestures widely, pivoting away from me.
When he returns, handing me the guitar, I don't move. Mickey gives me a once-over quickly. "Uh- can I have your number?" "No." "Thought so." He pouts. "So why're you still here?" I frown at his words and he lifts his hands in protest, waving them. "Not trying to be rude, just like, why?"
"Is Jennie here?" I pronounce while looking over both of Mickey's shoulders. He stares at me, looking puzzled, before clearly grasping my motives. He smirks. "No. Should I leave a message for you?" I ignore his mocking tone. "When's she in?" His face twists, "Not sure I can give out that kind of information buddy." His previous smirk creeps onto his face, "Unless there was a specific reason I should?" Mickey states suggestively. I roll my eyes and click my tongue. "No reason," I spit out.
Obviously regretting his decision to provoke me, Mickey sighs deeply. "I'm joking." Patting my forearm he admits, "But seriously, I legally can't give out staff member’s information to customers, even if they're Alex Turner." My temper eases when I survey his honest and sullen expression. Thinking, I rotate my head, taking in the pub's interior. Did I really come to this shithole last night?
"Does this place sell anything edible?" I doubtfully ask. Mickey visibly loosens.  "Yes, we do." He pulls out a chair for me, "Take a seat and I'll fetch you today's special." I barely nod in affirmation before he speeds off to the kitchen.
...
Two days later
Growing tired of checking my phone's clock for the seventh time tonight, I shove it back into my jacket pocket. Rising from my chair, I adjust my cap, dejected for the third time this week. Red was a no-show again.
"Leaving so soon?" Mickey exclaims from behind the bar. I swivel my neck and reply with a shrug, "I'm not really interested in finding out Friday's special, sorry Mick." He snickers. "It's not like you to give up so soon. I almost have the urge to give her a call." At this, I nearly flung my body over to Mickey. "You would do that?" I ask in disbelief.
"You've been here for the past three days." He laughs, "Some may find it creepy, maybe she'll find it charming." "Why haven't you offered to do this before?" I snap back.
"You never asked." He states plainly. I almost lay one on him then and there, but the promise of a call stops me from punching him. "Well?" I implore him, clasping my hands together in a plea. He nods meekly. "My phone's in the locker room, wait here if you can," he teases, making his way to the back room.
Five minutes later he returns, phone in hand, ringing her up. I glance at the screen which reads Rogen. "Rogen?" "Last name." He replies fleetly before the ringing ceases. "Heyyy J." The compulsion to snatch the phone from his hands rises expeditiously when he has the nerve to look at me and grin. "Yeah. He's here, again." He taunts. I nearly snarl.
Thousands of thoughts fizzled in my head. "Yeah sure," he babbles before delivering his phone to me. I hesitantly clutch his phone, mumbling, "Hello?" "Alexander?" "Alex." I correct, sighing with relief at the sound of her melodic voice. "Have you been coming to my place of employment for the past three days?" She questions me like I'm a toddler who got caught drawing on a plaster wall. "Yes I have, thank you for noticing," I retort humorlessly. Her laughter echoes through the phone.
Now smiling, I glance at Mickey, who carries the same look, and I spin away from his gaze with a sneer. "Sorry I've just been busy, and I like to stay as far away from that nasty place as I can." She states matter-of-factly.
I chuckle till my smile withers. "You left, without leaving your number Jennie." I resist reprimanding her, and she sighs quietly. "I know, sorry." She pauses. "I can be such a guy sometimes." I snort at her words. "May I have your number now Red?" I look to the ceiling for help while awaiting her answer. After a beat, she replies, "Hand me over to Mickey sweetie." My face flushes and I distractedly hand the phone to Mickey who looks equally confused. His expression then resolves and he states, "You might wanna get out a pen and paper sweetie."
...
"Get your head outta your arse Al! Focus." Zach demands with a shout. My eyes lift from my phone screen reluctantly.
Texting back and forth with Jennie had become a weekly habit. Two weeks to be exact. With my album's writing, recording, and everything in between, we haven't had the chance to connect properly. The desire to see that red hair once more was becoming overwhelming, so, my latest text entailed a "will you" and a "go out with me?" Said text also had yet to receive a reply for the last three hours.
The anticipation was killing me and I could hardly focus on my bandmates. "You disappear for days and come back with incredible songs, but somehow have lost the ability to count." Zach bellows in anger. "You missed your bit again Turner!" I stare blankly at Zach after his outburst, causing both Jamie and Miles to erupt with laughter. "Mate, what is wrong with you?" Miles questions while laughing. "Nothing," I grumble. They all give me a look of skepticism.
"Well snap outta it, we just gotta finish this last verse." Jaime dumbfoundedly shakes his head. Embarrassed, I plunge my phone into my jeans pocket and place my fingertips on the strings of my guitar.
...
Six hours later, our second song is finally done and I head out towards my hired car. At that moment, an incoming text staggers my step.
11:43 p.m. Jennie "Red" Rogen: Did you just ask me on a date Alexander? May need to think this one through XXX
Entering the car, I religiously read over her text. Feeling both rejection and bliss was a hell of a lot for one man alone. What's she playing at? All week we've been flirting, and now she's refusing me, sending kisses via text.
I'm at a loss for words and clearly hard of hearing as the driver repeats "Where to." His voice carries more of an edge the second time 'round. "Sorry mate," I pause, rethinking my destination while the driver's eyes leer at me through the rearview mirror. "Take me to Les Cactus." He nods a huff and instantaneously hits the gas.
...
As soon as we reach the curve, I hop out the vehicle and march towards the pub's entrance. I was done messing around. Now, a rather witless decision to confront Red head-on has become my top priority.
Beelining towards the ever-present bartender, I freeze. Red's back faces me and her scarlet lips brush Mickey's ear lightly, whispering. Her side presses against his while her hand clasps his shoulder. Stunned, I simply watch their interaction, scrutinizing the smile that consumes half of Mickey's face. My fists and jaw clench as various speculations of their conversation adorn my thoughts. I didn't like a single one of them.
Suddenly, Mickey detects me, eyes widening. "Alex?" As soon as my name leaves his mouth, Jennie's hand drops from his shoulder and her body whirls around. Like Mickey, her eyes enlarge and fill with confusion. Composing myself, I continue forward. Confidently striding to her, I get close enough that I have to peer down quite a bit. Maintaining eye contact I assert, "I did, so what's there to think about Red?"
I clock how she tenses, face unreadable. I audibly gulp. It's strange seeing such a woman speechless. But that silence didn't last long. "How bold of you to assume it would be so simple Mr. Turner." A sly smile grows on her face. I blow out the wind stuck in my lungs. "Nothing seems to be simple with you Jennie." I'll never get enough of saying her name, though, I like how calling her Red seems to rattle her.
A grunt is the only reply she gives before speaking again. "I don't even know you," she giggles. "Don't you think it's a little late to worry about that Red?" I clap back with humour, to which she grins knowingly. "How do you I don't regret that?" Her question nearly makes my assured demeanour falter. "I know you don't regret that night Red," I state with indifference. "And why's that?" "Because I was there." She stills, again, left speechless.
"Tomorrow night, I'll text you when and where," I mention nonchalantly before turning towards the exit. "Goodnight Red," I chuckle over my shoulder, glancing back one more time to drink in the priceless look on her face.

Femme like you - Chapter 1
Summary: You are the new tour manager for Arctic Monkeys during The Car era. You are practically the only girl in the team, also younger than the rest (27), so your skills are immediately called into question. In particular, by the frontman who is not used to being led by a woman.
Word count: 3,1k
Warning: age gap
A/N: Hi, you all!!! I'm so thrilled and excited to do this kind of stuff, but it feels like I'm making my dream come true. This series won't be very long even though I have an eye-watering number of moments I want to release in this fic, but English isn't my first language and it's pretty tough to write in it (so if you find any mistakes don't be afraid to text me and correct). I spent a lot of time to write this small opening chapter, that’s why following parts won't appear regularly, but I promise to uptade them every 2-3 weeks! They will definitely be longer that the opener😉
I read a lot of works with Alex, 'cause my addiction doesn't seem to disappear, so this idea just popped in my head and I couldn't resist. Never thought that I would be an author, not a reader in Tumblr, but voila - here I am. I really expect you to love it❤️
And yes, I know that their current tour manager is Steven Champan, but for the story I changed it slightly, hope you won't mind :)
Tumblr media
“James, seriously?” Alex looked away in bewilderment from the bottle of Hennessy to Ford.
“More than you can imagine” producer chuckled. “I will be with my family in Scotland, I haven’t seen them in a while, and she will replace me for the UK and European parts only, it’s about one and a half months”.
Turner looked him up and down with a displeased look, still sitting on the couch with a bottle in his hands “That’s ridiculous. She has never worked with us! She will break into all our well-established processes, not knowing the specifics of the work and will only interfere. We'll make it on our own, not the first time, man, huh?” Alex decided to soften his tone a little to appease his friend and cutely knitted his eyebrows.
“Al, you are being childish. C’mon, we have already agreed on everything, she is a good specialist, don't let yourself be deceived by her appearance” Ford threw a jacket over his shoulders, silently saying that the conversation is over.
“Just because she's your friend's daughter doesn't mean she's good!” The singer spat out the last argument hoping to reach out to the conscience of their producer.
“Give her a chance, you won't be disappointed” James said mysteriously, closing the door quietly behind him and leaving the disgruntled frontman alone with his obsessive thoughts.
***
You sat in your car in the parking lot in front of the Domino Records headquarters, nervously clutching a Starbucks cup. There were still 20 minutes before the meeting, but you arrived early. All the documents had already been signed, the agreements had been discussed, but the most thrilling moment remained - the meeting with the group itself and the technical crew.
When James Ford, your father's old friend from university and at the same time music producer for Arctic Monkeys, called you several weeks ago with an unusual request, you simply didn't have a chance to refuse. You've been dreaming of working in this industry since 16, especially since you adored this group and were at their concerts six times. Being their manager for one part of the 7th album tour sounded like a fantasy, but here you are, sitting in front of their label building, where you have a meeting with the musicians. If you caught the lucky girl syndrome, then you definitely didn’t want to let it go. At least not now.
From the trance into which you plunged by shaking coffee in the cup, you were brought out by the deafening creak of tires on asphalt. You immediately snapped out and looked in the rearview mirror. An elegant Cadillac whistled and stopped 3 parking lots away from you just passing the dividing line.
You weren't stupid not to realize whose car it was. The passenger got out, slamming the door sharply. He was wearing a beige trousers and matching jacket with black vest underneath, translucent red aviators were on despite a cloudy day. Paying no attention to your car and not even bothering to close his, a man quickly walked inside the building.
You followed the door closed behind Alex Turner itself with a blank look, finished your coffee in one gulp and also got out of the car, taking your purse from the passenger seat. Having heard about his "punctuality", you assumed that everyone else had already arrived, so you walked to the building as well. "There's no point in delaying this moment, let's start early" you bravely told yourself.
The studio in southwest London wasn't as big as you expected it to be. The guard pointed you to room 14, saying that you were already awaited. Inside, the bright corridors were hung with rare photographs, including images of early Monkeys' concerts. You smiled slightly as you looked at the photos of four young people laughing with their hands in their pockets. "Nice time" you thought.
You didn't really understand why you were so inflamed. You are all adults, lads have been warned about the change in management in advance so it won’t be a surprise for them, what could be the problem? You had enough work experience to know what to do, you were excellently good-looking and successful, then why did your palms sweat? Immersed in your thoughts you didn’t notice that you had reached the end of the corridor and stopped at the half-open door, from behind which quiet voices could be heard.
“Oi, she better buy me a bottle of beer on the way, my head hurts after yesterday. Why did I come so early, gosh?”
“It's been 5 minutes since you've been here, and you've already blown my mind’’. Seemed that it was Matt.
"I prefer to come sober to meetings scheduled in advance, but for the future I will keep in mind to see you no earlier than Tuesday, Mr. Turner”. Maybe it wasn’t the best greeting phrase, but you just couldn't resist. When you entered the room with these words, 7 surprised pairs of eyes met your figure. Alex, Matt and Nick were sitting on a leather sofa in the center of the room, Jamie was pouring water into a glass at a side table, Steven was sitting in a chair talking to Ben, who was reclining on the arm of this chair, behind them was a man whose name you didn’t know.
"I'm sorry," you quickly became embarrassed, realizing how inappropriate those words sounded. Silence reigned in the room for a few seconds, but was quickly interrupted by the awkward coughing of that same unfamiliar man. "Um guys, this is your new tour manager for these two months, Y/N Y/S" He said softly enough, stepping out from behind the chair and holding out his hand for you. "I'm Marcus, James' assistant, the rest you should know".
"Yeah, right, he told me about you, I'm very glad to meet you," and carefully shifting your gaze to the others you added "everyone".
You stood in your knee-length leather boots, denim shorts and an oversized cream-colored jacket not knowing what to do with the burning eyes on your persona.
"Actually, I brought a homemade cider as an ice-breaker, it's in my trunk, so after the official part of the meeting we can try it. Not beer, but still tasty," you said with an apologetic smile, trying your last attempt to ease the conversation. The room froze in silence once again, and in this moment Matt laughed out loud, slapping his knee and throwing head back on the headboard. Jamie and Nick joined him, smiling broadly, while Ben, Steven, and Marcus chuckled hoarsely as they looked at each other. Only Alex remained frowning as he continued to scan your figure.
"I like her already! Great move, miss Y/S" Matt said, obviously being amazed.
You breathed a sigh of relief as you sat down in the chair Marcus offered you. He was noticeably younger than the others, near your age, which immediately made you sympathize with him.
"Well, when we finally got to know each other, let's get down to business. As you all know James is on an unscheduled vacation due to family circumstances. Hence we are going to work with Miss Y/S in UK and Europe festivals, while I will assist her. I know that Y/N discussed with James all the main points about dates, places and stuff, but now we have to delve into details of the organization process itself. Ben and I will explain the tech part and the lads will share their preferences" Steven began the discussion by leaning a little closer to the center of your improvised circle. He seemed to be a very wise and at the same time charismatic man. Attractive, but platonically.
“Sorry, may I interrupt before we start” It sounded more like a statement from Alex. “How old are you, once again?"
"I'm 27, Mr. Turner. And let's make it clear, since this still raises questions. Yes, I'm quite young relative to you and indeed a stranger to your team. But I've known James for a long time, as well as your work, whose main fan I have been since 18. I have been in show business for 7 years now and worked with Maneskin at the very beginning of their career. It’s not difficult for me to provide my CV if necessary, but I’m here because I sincerely want to help my father's friend and ensure that you have the most comfortable atmosphere during your stay in Europe. I have an idea what it's like to be on tour for a year, I understand how tired you are, and that you need conditions for rest and creation. So I'll let you do your job without the interference and you’ll give me freedom to do my work properly, I'm sure we both do it very well, especially since you are not the only one, Mr. Turner, who can make a show out of nothing”. At these words the drummer whistled, turning to the gloomy vocalist, but you continued “I’m really extremely happy to be a part of Arctic Monkeys team, for me this is a great opportunity to test myself and work with such big people like you. So I don't see any problems in our interaction, taking into account that I'm here temporarily.
You glanced at the men with a soft, but tenacious look, catching your breath “Didn't seem to miss anything at this point, deal?”
Steven was the first to answer, smiling paternally at you and accepting your little speech. You also noticed that Turner shook his head, but smirked to himself, which relaxed your muscles a bit. If you didn't get along from the first sentence, then at least you can establish a normal business relationship. You understood that the nature of a rock star is unpredictable, following the development of the group and the change in the image of the frontman for many years, but you couldn't imagine that he would talk so irritably to new people. Yes, he certainly behaved ugly, but you also started the dialogue with a caustic comment. Apparently, you deserve each other.
After the temperature in the room dropped and everyone took a more relaxed posture, you began to discuss current tasks. Your first gig will be in Bristol on May 29th, so you have two weeks to get ready. In fact, everything has already been done even before the start of the whole tour. Now your duty is only to coordinate the setlists with the guys for each performance, to make sure that all agreements with venues are fulfilled, the rider is completed, the equipment is working properly, the buses are ordered, the hotels have confirmed the reservation, and the whole team has arrived safe and sound. Okay, maybe it's not so little, but you're ready for any challenge. This is your passion after all.
You will ride in a separate minivan with the management team, and not with the guys, which in general wasn’t a big surprise for you, but in hotels you will be provided with a separate room, unlike the rest of the staff, who live in double suits. You didn't know what caused such generosity, but you were pleased anyway. You talked for about an hour, agreeing to meet again at the sound check in a week, and then only before leaving for Bristol. During this time you will have to study all the venues, call the transport company and confirm the details of the trips.
Your meeting ended on a positive note, the guys were asking you about your life, your education and hobbies, you said that you had been dancing professionally for many years and even took up drumming at the university, to which Matt happily promised to give you lessons, triumphant that he finally met someone who doesn't play the guitar, but the drums.
“Be careful, Matthew, if it turns out that she is more talented than you, we’ll replace you without any hesitation. She looks better” Nick joked and immediately got the middle finger in response from the drummer. Even Alex genuinely smiled, looking back at the friend.
"Oh, don't worry, it's unlikely. But as for the cider I wasn't joking, at least I'm definitely good at that"
"Wait, did you make it yourself?" surprised Ben.
"Yes, I live in the suburbs of London and have my own small garden, I make cider for friends during the season"
"You know what, I'm already tired of this stuffy room, you say it's in your trunk?" Matt, confirming his status as the most talkative member of the group, stood up impatiently, stretching his stiff limbs.
"Yes, let's go and give it a try" you said, also getting up from your chair. “Who is with us?” you raised an eyebrow in question and the answer was six men who rose to their feet.
"Definitely need a smoke” murmured Alex in addition, patting his pockets for a pack of cigarettes.
“Damn, where did James find her?” you heard Jamie's question addressed to Steven as you left the room with Matt and couldn’t hold back a short, but self-satisfied smirk. "That's not the last ace in the hole, Jamie" flashed through your head.
"I'm asking the same question" but instead of Champan, the voice was given by Alex.
"Al, will you calm down today or not? Did yesterday's booze give you such a headache?" Cook hissed almost angrily.
But you didn’t hear the answer, moving away along the corridor to the exit.
***
When all the lads came out from the studio, you and Matt had already taken a wooden case with 12 bottles of cider out of the trunk of your white Range Rover and put it on the hood. Coming closer, Alex threw a jacket over his shoulders and took out cigarettes, offering you one.
"I don't smoke, thanks," you replied calmly. He arched an eyebrow in surprise and took a pipe of tobacco between his lips. “You better start, darling” He took a quick puff, blowing smoke in your face, and looked intently from under his eyelashes. Despite the sweet name, from his lips it sounded somehow humiliating. You didn't answer, turning around and taking one of the bottles, silently passing it to him. He thanked you, and you gave each man a bottle as well. "For the new leg of the tour! Cheers!" Steven exclaimed, raising the bottle in the air and you all clinked glasses together.
The eight of you stood in the parking lot next to your car. You and Marcus leaned on the hood, Chapman nestled next to your right, and the guys were in front of you. You stayed in pleasant silence, interrupted by the chirping of birds from a nearby square and breezes of the wind that swayed your styling. Satisfied sigh followed by Marcus and Jamie, which made you laugh cutely.
"Enjoy?" you asked playfully, taking a sip.
"Y/N, that's amazing! I’ve never thought our team would feel so acutely short of a personal alcohol supplier" Jamie savored the taste, taking small sips.
"It's only 6% alcohol, I brought this one on purpose, knowing that you will most likely be driving. But there is also 12% sort in my basement, so in case of anything, you know where to find me"
"Actually not, but for the sake of such a case, we will definitely get your address from James" Nick answered cheerfully.
You spent 20 more minutes talking about the process of making an apple brew and sharing your alcohol tastes. “What a topic to discuss” you hummed to yourself. Eventually you gave Ben, Marcus, Jamie, and Matt one more bottle, promising to bring more of 12% sort to the concert, and you were about to leave when suddenly your phone rang. A dark and mystical tune played from the back pocket of your shorts.
"Woah, that’s pretty old one" Alex said with unexpected liveliness.
"One of my favorites from yours" you replied quickly, pulling out the device. It was James. You decided to call him back when you would be alone, so you dropped the call, texting him that you would call back later.
"Hey Al, we haven't played it in a while. What do you think, mate?" Matt asked conspiratorially, giving him a little nudge on the shoulder.
"We’ll see, I think it's possible. NME will especially rejoice at this, still considering it insanely vulgar" the singer rolled his eyes, but couldn't help smiling.
"Isn't that right, Mr. Turner? Whose propeller is it then?" you grinned as you took an empty box and returned it to the trunk of the jeep.
"Miss Y/S, don't make me doubt your foresight as well" to your surprise, he came over to help you close the tailgate. You dusted your hands and shifted awkwardly from one foot to another, being locked between the car and the frontman. You could literally see wrinkles around his eyes and cider-wet lips that now were gently stirring.
"Who called?" the man asked more quietly than usual. "Uh, James, I think I should call him as soon as possible"
"Yeah, most likely" Turner reluctantly backed away from you, letting you through, and you walked to the driver's door.
"Well, guys, I was very glad to see you, I'm sure fruitful work awaits us!" you smiled reassuringly, swaying from heel to toe from jitters and excitement from upcoming events.
"See you in a bit, Miss Y/S, I will send you all our numbers and other necessary contacts tonight. Sleep enough these days, you will soon miss it" Steven winked and extended his hand to you for a handshake, so you answered him willingly.
“Goodbye, guys, see ya!” you only waved at other lads as you climbed onto the running board and sat inside the car. The Rover started with a pleasant growl, vibrating under your hands. You drove off, leaving the men in the parking lot, but noticing one fixed look of chocolate eyes in the rearview mirror. You attributed the recognition of the color of his eyes to a million views of concert photos on the Internet, but not to those few seconds near the trunk when you smelled his cigarette breath on your face.
That will be a roller-coaster indeed

10 Forgotten Muscle Cars That Deserve to Be Restored
by James Derek Sapienza
Source: General Motors We all know the story; it started in 1964 with the Ford Mustang. No, wait — I mean the Plymouth Barracuda. Or the Pontiac GTO. Or was it earlier with the Pontiac Catalina SD? The ’50s Dodge D-500 maybe? Debating the origin of the muscle car is like debating over the first rock and roll record; everyone you talk to has a different opinion, and no one is exactly wrong. Let’s just say that by the early ’60s, a generation coming of age fell in love with high-performance midsize cars coming out of Detroit, and for a few brief years, performance ruled the day. Naturally, the good old days seem to look better with each passing year, and as the book was written on the muscle car, a fair amount of contenders fell by the wayside.
Tumblr media
1. 1964 Studebaker Avanti R3
Source: Auctions America The Avanti isn’t generally counted among muscle cars, but then, Studebaker was never exactly considered a performance powerhouse to begin with. But the fiberglass Avanti had a long hood, short rear deck, and 289-cubic-inch V8 a full two years before the Ford Mustang did. In 1964 (after production officially ended), Studebaker bored out nine V8s to 304 cubic inches, slapped a Paxton supercharger on them, and dropped them into remaining Avantis. The result was a 171-mile-per-hour rocket, which the company claimed made it the fastest production car in America. This R3 was sold by Auctions America in 2010 for $96,250. With the collector market being what it is today, good luck finding one this cheap ever again.

2. 1965 Pontiac 2+2
Source: General Motors As far as classic muscle cars go, the ’65-’67 GTO is remembered to be about as big as they came. But with the success of the GTO, Pontiac wanted to take its go-fast formula to an even bigger car, which became the ’65-’67 2+2. Based on the full-size Catalina two-door, the 2+2 had its own unique 338-horsepower 421-cubic-inch V8, and in High Output guise, power jumped to 376 ponies, which when tuned right could rocket from zero to 60 in a mind-bending 3.9 seconds. Bigger, plusher, and often faster than its smaller stablemate, the 2+2 deserves a lot more love from speed freaks.

3. 1964 Mercury Comet Cyclone
Source: Ford For ’60s Ford products, the Mercury Comet was about as basic as they came. Closely based on the Ford Falcon, the ’64-’65 Comet could be livened up with Ford’s famous 289-cubic-inch V8. But for those who wanted more from their Mercurys, Ford built 50 Comet Cyclones for the dragstrip, complete with fiberglass hood, fenders, doors and front bumper, plexiglass windows, and the same 425-horsepower 427 V8 found in the Shelby Cobra. In ’66, Mercury introduced the production Comet GT with the 390 V8, and while they’re capable compact muscle cars, they couldn’t hope to match the insanity of their big block predecessor.

4. 1968 Ford Ranchero 500
Source: Ford It’s been long overshadowed by Chevy’s iconic El Camino, but the Ford Ranchero was America’s first car-based Ute. And while Chevy was offering the 396 V8 in its muscle trucks, Ford upped the ante in ’68 and made its restyled Ranchero available with a 335-horsepower Cobra Jet 428 V8. Unfortunately, a lack of weight over the rear wheels made the hot Rancheros a handful to drive, so very few were built with Ford’s biggest motor. While it seems like every surviving El Camino happens to be an SS model, we can’t remember the last time we’ve seen a Cobra Jet Ranchero. Come to think of it, we can’t remember the last time we’ve seen any Ranchero.

5. 1969 Chevy Kingswood 427
Source: General Motors Back in the ’60s, you could order virtually any option you wanted on a car, and companies would actually build it for you. So imagine you’ve got a growing family, and your Corvette just can’t handle them. What to do? Buy a Chevy Kingswood station wagon with Rally wheels, hideaway headlights, seating for seven, and the same 390-horsepower V8 found in your ‘Vette. Only 546 buyers opted for the big V8 in ’69, but a number of 427 Kingswoods spent the next decade making their mark on the drag strip.
Tumblr media
6. 1969 Oldsmobile Rallye 350
Source: General Motors When gearheads think of outrageous muscle cars from 1969, the Pontiac GTO Judge easily sits at the top of the list. But while the Judge has gone on to become a legend, Oldsmobile’s analog, the Rallye 350, is all but forgotten. Like the Judge (at least at first) it was offered in one outrageous color (Sebring Yellow), had color-matched wheels and bumpers, a spoiler, and a fiberglass hood. And compared to Olds’s top-dog 442, the car’s 310-horsepower 350-cubic-inch V8 made it significantly lighter, allowing it to scramble from zero to 60 in seven seconds and run the quarter mile in a respectable 15.27 seconds at 97 miles per hour. Just 3,500 Rallye 350s were built, making it one of the more obscure muscle cars to ever come from GM.

7. 1969 Ford Torino Talladega
Source: Ford Half a century on, the Plymouth Roadrunner Superbird and Dodge Daytona get all the love when it comes to NASCAR homologation specials. But in 1969, Ford tried its hand at aerodynamics too and built the Torino Talladega. Starting with a Torino Sportsroof, Ford worked with the Holman-Moody race shop to design a sleeker, longer front clip and rear fascia for the car. The Talladega was honed in the wind tunnel — a relative novelty for the era — and powered by the 429-cubic-inch V8 found in the Boss Mustang. Production was over by March; Ford only built 754 of them and they were barely advertised, but the slippery cars dominated during the ’69 season, winning 29 races. In 1970, however, the 200-mile-per-hour Superbird ruled NASCAR, and the Talladega’s time in the spotlight was over. Today, the Talladega (and near-identical Mercury Cyclone Spoiler II) are bargains on the collector market compared to the beak-nosed Mopars.
Tumblr media
8. 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix SJ
Source: General Motors The second-generation Grand Prix is largely remembered for its role in popularizing the Personal Luxury Coupe segment, but in its early days, it was one of the hottest cars on the street. With a long hood (the longest hood of any production car in ’69, in fact) and short deck, the Grand Prix was available with Pontiac’s 390-horsepower 428-cubic-inch V8, allowing it to scramble from zero to 60 in 6.5 seconds and run the quarter mile in 15 seconds at 97 miles per hour. Its combination of luxury and power made it the Grand Prix massive hit for Pontiac; within a few years, any semblance of performance would be gone.

9. 1970 Chrysler Hurst 300
Source: Fiat Chrysler Automobiles As early as 1970, Chrysler die-hards were feeling nostalgic for the 300-letter series, which ended in 1965. The 300-series carried on, but performance had taken a back seat as mid-sized muscle cars had picked up the go-fast mantle. Chrysler tried to recapture the magic for ’70 by outfitting a 300 coupe with the interior from an Imperial, a fiberglass hood and decklid, a 375-horsepower 440-cubic-inch V8, and a Torque-Flite automatic to handle all that power. At 18.5 feet long and 4,400 pounds, the big Chrysler could still make zero to 60 in 7.1 seconds and run the quarter mile in 15.3 seconds. With just 500 built, the Hurst 300s rank as one of the rarest Mopar muscle cars of all time.
Tumblr media
10. 1971 AMC SC/360 Hornet
Source: Chris Andrews Productions via YouTube In the ’60s, AMC’s red, white, and blue Rebel Machine and SC/Rambler muscle cars failed to move the sales needle for America’s last independent automaker, but they sure caused a scene wherever they went. For 1970, the company had introduced the compact Hornet and Gremlin to replace the Rambler, and with them came the SC/360 Hornet. With an available 285-horsepower 360-cubic-inch V8 under the hood, the small Hornet could hit 60 from a standstill in 6.7 seconds, and run the quarter mile in 14.9 seconds at 97 miles per hour. But in 1970, displacement still ruled the day, and despite being cheaper than a Plymouth Duster 340, AMC found just 784 buyers for its smallest muscle car. We think it’s aged remarkably well, and would love to take one of these ’70s-era sleepers to the drag strip.

Fontaines D.C. talk to Jack Saunders on BBC Radio 1's New Music show
Grian and Curley dropped by BBC Radio 1 to talk to Jack Saunders about the first single off their upcoming fourth album Romance, which comes out August 2024. I'll grab the audio clip once the broadcast of Jack's show is done. Sorry if this sounds like a blurb off the BBC site, I don't work for them but they should bloody consider that.
[On the lyrics to Fontaines D.C.'s first new single, 'Starburster']
Grian: "I felt a sense of immobility when I was writing these lyrics. I actually had the lyrics written, and was unsatisfied was them. I was on the way to record them and had a bit of a freak-out. I sat down and texted the producer James Ford and said, "I can't do this right now," I had to have it postponed. I sat down and just redid them because it wasn't what it was meant to be. And then it kind of came out in one go. It was sort of the experience of listening to yourself as opposed to expressing yourself."
[On the gasping breaths on Starburster, which Jack described as 'coming up for air']
Curley: I think working on this project breathed new life into us, we were excited to work on new sounds and go for it instead of being safe, which I don't think we've ever done, but on this one, we tried for it even harder.
Grian: You've got to take steps forward. Previously when we were releasing new music, we though that we might alienate some people with what we were going to release, but where in the past we may have thought that we didn't necessarily completely commit to the step, this time we did really jump.
[On the hip hop influence]
Grian: I was really into hip hop as a kid, and as you [Jack Saunders] mentioned, there's definitely a bit of a Gorillaz element to the production [the strings]. The focus came from a place of aggression and frustration, all the vowel sounds came out first and I had to figure out what the vowel sounds were.
[On the band's new aesthetic and bright coloured look, and 'finding light in a dark place']
Grian: The idea of the title is about embracing the necessary delusion in terms of how to function [in everyday life]. I imagine it as a world within a snowglobe, that you can slip into like a warm bath, but within that world is all the hysteria. It's about embracing that.
[On the album 'Romance']
Grian: We're releasing a new album, it's name is 'Romance'. That track [the snippet posted yesterday] is the opening track and it's also called Romance.
'Starburster' is BBC Radio 1's Hottest Record of the Week.
