When Natasha appeared back on the platform alone, after retrieving the soul stone, everyone was shocked and confused. Natasha just sat there as she held the stone in her hand. She still couldn’t believe what just actually happened and her best friend was suddenly gone. The two fought hard against each other and yet, she was defeated and still here. A tear rolled down her rosy cheek, she didn’t know what to say to the others. All Natasha could do was replay the last moments she was with you. You had bettered her, she held onto you as tightly as she could as she hung there from the zip line cord you had attached to her. Tears started to form in the waterline of her eyes as she looked down at you. She could feel her grip on you start to weaken as she held onto the cord. She could tell by the look in  your eyes that you were pleading with her to let you go. She groaned as she adjusted, still trying to hold onto you and the cord. She wasn’t ready to let go.
“No, I’m not gonna do it.” She was barely able to get the words out through gritted teeth and tears.
She watched as you glanced down at the ground beneath us before you looked back up at her. She could see the acceptance that was in your eyes, you were accepting that this was your fate.
“It’s okay.” Your voice was soft and somehow filled with understanding.
She tried to reach for you with her other hand but she couldn’t quite reach you. “No, please. No.”
She hated the way her voice cracked at every word. Even more than that, she hated the way you were simply nodding your head gesturing that it was okay.
“Let me go Tasha.”
She wondered how you were so calm right now.
“No, I can’t. I need you.” A huge lump had formed in her throat, making it hard for her to speak.
A small smile curled up onto the corner of your lips. “Let me go. It’s okay.”
“No!” Natasha screamed out to you, she didn’t recognize her own voice as she screamed.
She couldn’t believe the scream from her, let alone that not even a sound came from you. You had pushed yourself off of the rock with your feet causing her to let go of you. She was sobbing at this point as she looked at your unmoving body on the ground below as she clung on tightly to the zip cord.
She was brought back to the present by the sound of Steve’s voice. She couldn’t bare to look at him, she couldn’t bare to look at any of them. You were important to every one of them, you had helped them all in some way.
“Natasha, what happened? Where is she?”
Steve’s questions caused her bottom lip quiver as she continued to stare at the floor. He didn’t sound upset but she still couldn’t bring herself to explain what happened. A small, painful squeal escaped her as she tried to find her words.
“Nat? You’re starting to scare us, what happened?” This time, it was Clint’s voice she heard, she could hear the concern in it.
Natasha really tried to talk but another painful squeal escaped her. “The price for the soul-” she had to cut herself off and take a deep breath. “In order to take the stone, you must lose that which you love most. A soul-”
She couldn’t finish it, she was thankful when Nebula spoke up. “A soul for a soul.”
A heavy realization comes over everyone at Nebula’s words. They couldn’t believe it, you sacrificed yourself to help undo what Thanos had done. Even the ones who didn’t know you too well like Rocket, Scott, and Nebula felt a wave of sorrow wash over them. You barely knew them and yet, you welcomed them with open arms and treated them kindly. Clint rushed over to Nat and pulled her up into his arms as she continued to sob. Clint felt a few of his own tears fall down his cheeks, you were like a sister to him. You helped convince him to come back and to put up the Ronin mantle. Tony’s voice broke the sorrow filled silence but everyone could hear the waver in every word.
“Did she,” Tony had to pause for a moment. Before Morgan, you were the closest thing to a daughter he had. “Besides us, did she have any family?”
“No, just us.” Steve answered, his voice cracked at the end. Before he found Bucky again, you had taken his spot as his best friend. You’d stuck by his side through everything these last couple of years.
Bruce remained quiet but he could feel his color drain from him before a few tears rolled down his cheek. Rhodey was at a complete loss for words, over the years, you had become close and he admired you for what you stood up for. A sniffle escaped Thor before he started to speak, grief was very apparent in his voice as he spoke.
“If it’s alright, I’d like to put something together. In my opinion, she deserves to be honored like a true warrior.”
“Sure buddy, I think we can all agree to that.” Tony nodded his head as he agreed.
The following day, Thor had everything ready to go just before sunset. He had a small canoe set up with a podium in the middle that was decorated with beautiful flowers. A small group had gathered to honor you. Once Thor was satisfied, he turned back to everyone and gave them a short nod. Tony and Steve then stepped forward and helped Thor push the canoe out into the lake. Everyone watched in silence as the water carried it towards the opening of the lake. Clint readied his bow with one of his special arrows, Thor had asked him to do the honor of setting the boat on fire. He took a deep breath just before he released the arrow. As soon as the arrow touched the cane, it set it on fire. A few moments of heavy silence surrounded them as the burning canoe floated down the river. Once it was out of sight, Thor then took Stormbreaker into his hand and he hit the bottom of the handle on the ground. All but Steve turned around to head back inside, he stood there a moment longer as he watched the ashes float up to the now night sky.

James Rhodes x Female!Reader: Part of the Package Deal
Tumblr media
Summary: When you got married, people warned you that you wouldn’t just be marrying your husband, you’d be marrying into his family. Too bad no one ever warned you you’d be marrying into his friendships, too.
Rating/Warnings: All (Post-Captain America: Civil War; Captain America: Civil War Compliant; Hurt!James “Rhodey” Rhodes; Married!James “Rhodey” Rhodes; Vitriolic Best Buds; Mild Swearing; Avengers Compound)
Challenge: “100 Little Drabbles” by Wingu on Lunaescence Archives
Prompt: Break
Tag List: @imaginesfire
Notes: This is my first go at writing Rhodey outside of his occasional appearances in longer Tony-centric works. It’s long overdue, and I might have gone a little overboard with Tony just because I feel bad that I always focus on his friendship with Bruce instead.
Part of the Package Deal
Gravel crunched beneath your feet as you stepped of your sensibly-sized and -colored rental car onto the Avengers Compound’s sweeping grounds. Several huge buildings rose up around you high enough to block out the sun crawling westward toward the horizon. You pulled your sunglasses off to get a better look at your surroundings. So this was where Jim had been spending so much time for the past year. And how could you blame him? This place blew your modest home in Malibu out of the water.
No, no, no! Pinching the bridge of your nose, you shook your head back and forth until it cleared of the usual Stark razzle-dazzle. You refused to let anything here impress you. Tony thought modern architecture and flashy tech were enough to make up for the fact you never heard about your husband unless he’d been involved in an accident? Well, not anymore.
With one sharp exhale, you squared your shoulders and snapped your attention to the nearby doors. According to the map you’d printed off the internet, these led into the living quarters for the Avengers. You took one handle and yanked to no avail. Locked. Yes, you decided as you took a step back to look for any obtrusive security cameras, you were definitely in the right place.
“Tony!” You banged on the glass. “Tony, let me in!”
Peering inside revealed nothing but an empty room filled with exercise equipment. You knocked again.
“Tony, I did not fly all the way here from California for you to ignore me!”
“Mr. Stark is currently tied up in other matters. May I have your name, please?”
The cool, Irish-accented voice of a woman seemed to come from nowhere. You jumped about a foot away from the door. A minute or two of pulse-pounding shock later, you realized this must be yet another of Tony’s AIs. What had happened to JARVIS, you wondered. He never had to ask for your name.
“Your [Name], please,” the new AI insisted.
“[F Name] Rhodes,” you answered as you stepped back to the door.
“I have no such name on the approved visitor list for today. Please contact our publicity office to arrange for an appointment at a later date. Goodbye.”
“Hold it!”
No reply came forth. For all the good it would do, you smashed your fist against the door once more. Then you held your breath. Still nothing moved behind the glass. Had Tony’s artificial bouncer really just left you here alone?
“Ma'am, I’m afraid that if you do not vacate the facility premises in the next ten minutes, I will be forced to call in the authorities.”
Apparently not.
“Listen,” you said, still unsure of exactly where to look to get your point across. “You tell Tony that [F Name] Rhodes is here. If he still won’t let me in, I’ll gladly talk to whatever authorities you’re required to summon. If he wants the extra publicity, I don’t mind giving it to him.”
The woman didn’t answer. You wondered again what had become of JARVIS. JARVIS knew you. He would never have left you standing outside, listening for the sound of approaching sirens or Iron Man drones. Heck, he’d probably have opened the door without waiting to get permission from his precious boss.
Movement flashed somewhere in the back of the room a quarter of an inch away from you. A figure made its rapid way in your direction. Soon it was close enough for you to identify: Tony Stark had made an appearance at last. He looked uncharacteristically pale as he unlocked the door and pushed it open to allow you inside.
“Where’s Jim?” you asked after you dumped your purse on a nearby plastic chair—the only flat surface you could fine that wasn’t tile floor.
“Hello to you, too, [Name],” Tony said. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“Don’t play dumb with me..”
“You’re a long way from California. It never occurred to you to call first?”
“The line was busy.” You folded your arms across your chest and asked again calmly, “Where’s Jim?”
Tony pushed his hair from his forehead with a sigh. You noticed he was having trouble meeting your eyes. “Resting.”
“Resting where?”
“Can we not do this right now? Let me show you to a room. We’ve got plenty available. When Rhodey’s ready, we’ll all have dinner together. I might even be able to dig Vision up from wherever he got to. We can talk then.”
As though Tony could weasel out of a conversation you wanted to have with him. You’d known him far too long for any of his usual stalling tactics to work.
“Tony, I’ll tell you this one time before I start pulling this place apart with my bare hands: Give me. My husband.”
Your eyes locked with his. A long pause ensued. You could practically see the gears (or suitably high-tech equivalent) turning inside Tony’s skull as he struggled to come with some comeback witty enough to distract you. Too late. Before he could utter another word, you turned on your heel to follow the dim hallway leading from the room.
“Wait!” he called after you.
You stopped and look at him over your shoulder.
“I…I can’t.”
“Why not?” You could barely keep the anger from your voice.
“Because he isn’t ready yet.”
“He isn’t ready for what?”
“Ready for you to see him!”
Gritting your teeth in a silent snarl, you marched right back up to Tony and jabbed a finger into his chest where his arc reactor used to sit. “You have no right to keep me from him.”
“I know.” He took the hand still prodding him, but instead of shoving it away, he wrapped his own hand around yours. “[Name], I promise, as soon as he’s okay, I’ll take you right to him.”
“‘Okay’? ’Okay’? Why is he not okay? Did something else happen to him?”
“No, not exactly.”
“What is he doing here anyway? He should be at the VA!”
“Trust me. This the best place for him. I’ve got one of the best neurosurgeons in the country on speed dial. Admittedly not the best, because he wouldn’t take my calls—but this one is excellent, too, and she’s keeping a good eye on him! I’m doing the best with what I’ve got, all right?”
He probably thought you’d drop the point of your husband being kept at Avengers HQ instead of a medical facility. After all, Tony was the man that built the greatest technical innovation the world had seen in decades while being kept prisoner in a cave with a box of scraps. But this wasn’t the fate of Tony’s reputation or his company at stake here. It was the man you loved’s life.
“Not good enough,” you said.
Tony pulled you back as you attempted a second break for the hall. “[Name], would you listen to me? Rhodey is as physically and emotionally fine as he can be. All I’m asking for is a little more time.”
Something about that request broke the dam inside you. Every horrible feeling you had experienced over the last few days crashed over you—the fear, the anger, the stress, the worry, all of it. Despite your best efforts to keep yourself upright and strong, tears filled your eyes. You ripped your arm free of Tony’s grip so that you could wipe your face dry with your sleeve and level a dry glare at him.
“I have given you time, Tony. It’s been days. I should have heard it from you, not from CNN.”
“I admit, when you put it that way, I could probably have handled the reveal a bit better.”
“How do you think I feel, knowing Jim is out there putting his life on the line for you, only to hear he’s been seriously injured while I’m listening to the news over dinner?”
“Things have just been a little hectic around here since Steve decided to play Dirty Harry, okay? I swear, I was going to call you just as soon as—”
“As soon as what? I am his wife, Tony! I deserve—”
“[Name]?”
Both you and Tony looked toward the hall to see a familiar man creeping up it, his hands pressed against the white wall to help him stand.
“Jim!” you gasped at the exact same time that Tony said, “Rhodey?”
For one shining moment, you remained so stunned to see your husband again that you failed to notice anything different about him. All you could do was stare at him in happy wonder—until he reached the end of the wall and nearly tumbled to the floor without further support. He would have fallen, had Tony not been quick enough to see what was happening and leap to fill the place the wall once had.
“Thanks,” Jim said.
“Don’t mention it. What are you doing out of bed?”
The two of them made their slow, staggering way across the room. You watched with one hand over your mouth. Could this really be the same man that had stood at the end of the aisle at your wedding? He looked the same and sounded the same, but, oh, Jim. Thankfully, you noticed where the men were headed before you gave yourself over to more tears. Your purse was unceremoniously dumped to the floor just as Jim collapsed into it. A few seconds went by as he caught his breath.
“I thought I heard the two of you arguing,” he answered Tony at last.
“We weren't—” But the cutting look you shot Tony prevented him finishing his protest.
“Sure,” Jim said, then he looked at you. “When did you get here?”
“About fifteen minutes ago,” you replied.
“Well, it’s good to see you. I was beginning to wonder when Tony would allow me to have visitors.”
“He didn’t.”
Jim frowned. “What do you mean?”
“I’m only here because I found out what happened on the news. Tony has nothing to do with it.”
“Oh. Oh. I’m sorry, [Name]. I should have called you. Between the media blitz and all the physical therapy, it never even crossed my mind.”
You put your hand gingerly on his shoulder and were relieved that he didn’t collapse under the added weight. “It’s okay, Jim. I don’t blame you for my finding out this way.”
“It isn’t Tony’s fault.”
You snorted, causing Jim’s faint eyebrows to lift.
“It’s not.”
“Jim.” Now your hand moved to cup his cheek. “This happened because you were cleaning up one of Tony’s messes again.”
Admittedly, you didn’t have all the details lined up just yet. One never could trust the news to tell the whole or entire truth about something, but this fiasco smelled strongly of one of Tony’s harebrained world-protection schemes. His role in keeping Jim away from for months at a time was a well-worn subject of argument between you and your husband; bringing it up now when Jim was so weak wasn’t exactly fair. But you couldn’t stand seeing him like this, and the knowledge that Tony had something to do with his injuries again only aggravated you further.
“I swear, you got hurt less often back when you only worked for the Air Force,” you said throatily.
Jim pressed one of his hands over the one you had on his face, then waited to speak until you could control yourself enough to look him in the eye:
“[Name], you know I make my own decisions.”
“And those decisions change if you think Tony’s going to get himself killed,” you grumbled.
“And you know I’m willing to call Tony out when I think he’s being an idiot.”
“Which doesn’t matter when he doesn’t listen.”
“And you knew that when you and I got married, Tony was part of that package deal.”
Another glare in Tony’s direction met with an odd expression on his part. Before it had felt like he couldn’t look straight at you. Now it felt like he’d forgotten you were even there, so focused was he on Jim. Could that be guilt you read on Tony’s face? Surely not. You turned back to your husband with a sharp breath.
“At the time, I didn’t realize the deal would involve so much of you two flying around in metal suits.”
Jim let out a soft, low chuckle. His eyelids slid shut. When he dropped his arm to his side, you reluctantly pulled your hand away from him. Tony knelt beside him to put his hand on the shoulder you had so recently held.
“You had a rough morning. You should be in bed,” he said.
“I’m fine, I’m fine.” Jim tried to wave him off, but Tony stayed put.
“I mean it. You want to backslide? All that progress we made this morning? Gone, because your stubborn ass has to come running whenever I get in a fight.”
“You’re not in any condition to go toe to toe with [Name] right now.”
“When am I ever?”
The two of them grinned at each other in that infuriating way that only a couple of guys making a private joke could. Seeing as you were the butt of that private joke, you did not crack a smile. You allowed them to continue smiling, though, until their little “bromance” moment stretched on a little too long. Both men started when you cleared throat. Maybe they had forgotten you were still standing there with your arms crossed over your chest.
“And what, exactly, about this morning was so rough?” you asked frostily.
The look Jim and Tony exchanged that time was different—more raised eyebrows and frowning—but equally infuriating.
“What aren’t you telling me?” This question you directed at your husband. “I came out all this way to find out what’s been going on, so one of you had better spit it out.”
“Or what?” asked Tony.
“Tony, I think she’s serious,” Jim said.
“So am I. Is not knowing really grounds for a divorce? I’m just weighing our options here.”
With an aggrieved sigh, Jim shoved Tony out of his immediate personal bubble. Tony must not have wanted to keep their shared secret too badly, because he did nothing to prevent Jim from taking a deep breath and saying:
“Tony’s got me doing some…experimental physical therapy.”
Well, that wasn’t a comforting explanation. “So you’re a physical therapist now?” you asked.
“Among other things,” Tony said.
“Look.”
You could not ignore Jim’s soft request. Instead of firing back at Tony as you so badly wanted to, you returned your attention to your husband. He tapped at a glowing blue circle about halfway down his thigh. From that light sprouted a complicated system of pulleys and joints and even more lights that sprawled across Jim’s legs and hips. So eager had you been to see him alive and moving that you hadn’t even noticed this addition to his body.
“Tony made these for me,” he said. “Without them, I wouldn’t be able to walk at all.”
Your mouth opened. Your mouth closed. Again. Again. Again. Still unable to think of any way to express your thoughts on the matter, you raised your head to look at Tony. You were surprised to find his brown eyes shining when they met your gaze.
“We’re still working out the kinks. Rhodey is—” Tony coughed a few times, then went on, “Rhodey is amazing. He’s doing great. Really great. I’m just trying to get the braces up to his speed.”
“We’re both getting there. Together.”
Tony shook his head, unwilling to accept Jim’s encouragement. His eyes and yours were trained on each other like magnets. “You weren’t supposed to show up until he was perfect. That’s why I didn’t call. I wanted to give him back to you good as new.”
“Tony…” Jim began, but once more Tony waved him off.
“I owe you both at least that much.”
Neither you nor Tony seemed able to figure out what to say to each other after that. At least you finally managed to break eye contact. He looked back at Jim, tried to smile, failed, and awkwardly stuck his hands in the front pockets of his pants. You turned your head to blink rapidly at the wall, cleared your throat again, and tried not to cry. After struggling to find words to say to Tony for another minute or so, you gave up and went back to Jim instead.
“You really think this is what you need? Not rehab at an actual hospital?” you asked.
He didn’t miss a beat. “I trust Tony. This is what I want to do.”
Normally, Tony would have taken this compliment and rubbed it in your face until it ground to dust. That day he didn’t react at all. Didn’t blink. Didn’t grin. Didn’t so much as offer a single quip. He seemed to be waiting for you to make the next move. His behavior threw you off, and the more you thought about it, the more you realized just how little Tony was acting like himself at all. The whole catastrophe with Steve—and Jim’s injury—must have really rattled him.
Then it hit you: Jim wasn’t just staying here for his own sake; he could never be that selfish. Tony needed Jim just then just as badly as Jim needed Tony. You couldn’t tear him away.
“Fine,” you said.
“Fine?” Tony echoed.
“What’s fine?” Jim asked.
“You can stay. I won’t drag you off to the nearest VA like I was planning to.”
“You won’t?” A hopeful note crept into Tony’s voice.
“Really?” said Jim.
“Really,” you answered.
They both cheered. If you’d given them the time, you suspected they might have actually embraced. You did not give them the time, however. Tony could change his mind just as quickly as you, so you needed to get things arranged as soon as possible. Neither he nor Jim noticed you taking a step away from them, but they couldn’t fail to hear you say:
“Just let me go get my bags out of the car.”
You made a beeline for the door you’d come through before either of them could register what you said. Such ringing silence could not last. No sooner had you placed your hand on the door handle than did Tony shake off the lingering shock.
“Wait. No one said anything about you staying,” he said as he came after you. “No, no. This is a secure facility! I’m sure we can find you a nice hotel nearby if you really feel you need to—”
“Tony,” said Jim.
“She’s not an Avenger!”
“Yeah, and neither are we much these days.”
Then Jim tried to get to his feet. It looked more to you like he was having a seizure. His feet scuffed against the floor while his fingers grasped the edge of the chair he sat on. Very slowly and very arduously, he finally managed to stand. You held everything you had inside you very, very still to prevent yourself from running over to him and helping him over to Tony’s side. He got there all on his own several agonizing minutes later. There he clapped Tony on the shoulder and shot him a tired smile.
“Besides, you knew when [Name] and I got married, she’d always be part of the package deal,” he said.
Tony’s lips pursed together at that. They squirmed for a long time. At last, without bothering to so much as look in your direction, he said, “Fine. She can stay.”
“Thanks, Tony.”
“But you have to say in the wing where we house the orphaned SHIELD agents!” Tony’s call followed you out of the compound and back onto the lot where your rental car sat waiting.
“Tony—” Jim began in a warning tone.
The door shutting behind you prevented you from hearing the quarrel that surely followed. Those two were always like that, especially when it came to you. As you hefted your two suitcases from the car’s trunk, though, you found you didn’t care. You didn’t care about having to listen to Jim and Tony argue until they were blue in the faces or drunk. You didn’t care about the fights you and Tony would get into when he inevitably got bored and started picking on you. You didn’t even care that it looked as though you and your husband would not be returning to your home in California soon or ever at all.
No, all you felt in that moment was grateful. Tony Stark might have put a lot of stock into the work of his own hands, modern architecture, and flashy tech—but he put more stock into his friendship with you and with Jim.

Walking over to one of the tables in the room, your gaze wandered over all of the papers. You felt a little overwhelmed by all of the papers.
Jumping as a loud thud rang out into the mostly quiet cabin. You quickly turned around and sighed just seeing a book that fell off the table.
Walking over to the book, you picked up the thick novel. It didn’t seem to have any title.
Running your fingertips over the leather cover you wrapped for fingers around it and turned. You watched as the book open revealing what looked to be an index for this house.

we could be more | dean winchester | 8
Tumblr media
Summary: Ivonne Rainer was practically a trained killing machine. Stripped to the bone then built back up by her father in order to become one of the best, like he was. She was forced into hunting when she was nineteen, having developed powers that couldn’t be explained. That is, until she was paid a visit by Azazel’s lackey. Her powers were gone, she needed help, and that’s when she found her father’s journal. Pointing to Sam and Dean Winchester.
SERIES MASTERLIST
THE USUAL SUSPECTS
ᴺᴼᵂ ᴾᴸᴬᵞᴵᴺᴳ : ROLLING IN THE DEEP - ADELE
“Miss Ivonne Rainer.” A dude with black hair and green eyes stepped into the room, holding a case file. He was around my age, well built, and judging by the confidence, high up in the precinct. He was also, now that I mention it, sexy. “You’ve got a very chequered past, by the looks of it.”
“I’m not playing chess, mate, so just cut to the chase.” I retorted, tapping my watch. “You’ve got 48 hours, so why not tell me your name so we can move things a bit quicker?”
”Detective Sergeant James Rhodes.” He showed me his badge.
“Where’s the bad cop, eh?”
”With Dean Winchester. Good cop’s with Sam, and the even worse cop is with you.”
”I feel special. Flattered.” I smiled sarcastically. “Why are you holding us?”
”Your buddy Dean is being held on charges for suspicion of murder.”
I frowned, leaning forward. “Murder?!”
”You sound genuinely surprised. You should’ve gone to acting school.”
”Who could he have murdered?”
“We’re getting onto that.” He replied, opening a file and giving me a once over with a hint of red on his cheeks. I smirked a little, leaning back in my chair. “Let’s just look through your file first. I’ve got a lot of research on you, Ivonne. You’re 27, born in ‘79 in Jersey to Michael Rainer and Audrey Rainer neé Singer. You went to a good primary, got a score of 174 on your LSATs, an almost perfect score on your SATs and scored a full ride to Princeton on the course of economics while trying to help your younger sister Quinn battle cancer, which ultimately failed.” I gritted my teeth. “But, here’s the catch. One year after your admission, you were forced to drop out due to your father’s untimely death, a murder which was never solved. Do you want me to continue?”
I stayed silent.
“Tough crowd. About a month after your father’s death, you were the centre of an open and shut case eight years ago in which your brother Carter descended into insanity and killed your family by sticking knives into their throats, and also killed your mother’s unborn child. However, in defence, you shot him after he tried to do the same to you. You were proven innocent after a CCTV recording placed Carter as the killer of your sister Lily and your mother. You went off the grid, but then conveniently seven or eight years later, you were kidnapped by your boyfriend Xavier Jackson, but you broke free, wrestled for his gun and shot him twice, killing him. Your witness? Sam Winchester.”
“You done relating my life story?” I scoffed. “I’ll admit it, you’re cute and this macho, intimidation act is as well, but if you’re aiming to take me out to dinner after this, you’re gonna have to take a step back and reassess the situation.” He looked taken aback, and I nodded. “I’ve met people like you before, Serge, and I know exactly how to deal with them.”
“We’re here to discuss Dean Winchester.”
”And so far all you’ve done is relate something that isn’t important and check me out.” I smirked. “Get on with it, will you?”
”Why I listed every bit of your family history is because one thing doesn’t add up.” He put down the file. “How you ended up with the Winchester brothers. You have no connection to them. Your family had no contact with the Winchesters. So how did you end up with a man who’s charged with assault, murder and grave desecration and his brother?”
“I found them.” I frowned, pulling out my dad’s journal. “Read about John, Sam and Dean Winchester, knew I had to find ‘em. I had a stalker after me. Not anymore, but Dad’s journal knew that they could help me and they did.”
”What about Tony and Karen Giles?”
”Anthony Giles was a friend of John Winchester.” I explained. “I went with Sam and Dean once they found out that he was dead, throat slit with no trace of any bad things happening in Giles’ life to make him do such a thing.”
Tumblr media
“There you go.” Sam gave Dean and I a cup of coffee while Dean handed Sam a paper while I dried my hair with a t-shirt. I was wearing a baggy black cashmere jumper with jeans, my necklace around my neck as usual.
“Anthony Giles.” Dean stated.
“Who’s Anthony Giles?” I asked, leaning in with my hand on Dean’s shoulder.
“He’s a Baltimore lawyer. Working late in his office, check it out.”
I read the paper, raising an eyebrow. “Room was clean, throat was slit… but no DNA or prints.”
”Keep reading. It gets better.”
“Security cameras failed to capture footage of the assailant.” Sam muttered.
“So either someone tampered with the tapes, or…”
“There’s an invisible killer.”
“My favorite kind. What do you think, Scully? You wanna check it out?”
“I’m not Scully. You’re Scully.”
“No, I'm Mulder. You're a red-headed woman.”
“You two are idiots, more like.” I sighed. “Let me dry my hair, then we’ll head out.”
“C’mon, Beanie,” Dean laughed, “you look good with wet hair.”
“Then again, it doesn’t feel great in cold air.” I winked. “Maybe next time.” I rifled through my box of IDs, buying my lip. “Who are we today?”
“Insurance investigators.”
“I’ll get my suit from the Mustang.”
Tumblr media
“But, if you think about it, Dean couldn’t have murdered Tony, being at my house, right?” I asked.
“You’re right.” He nodded. “Tell me what happened next.”
“We went to see Karen, to help her keep herself together. And boy, she was fallin’ apart.”
Tumblr media
Karen Giles sat on her sofa, sniffling and wiping her nose on a tissue. “Insurance. I totally forgot about the insurance.” She whispered, holding back the fifth wave of tears.
“We're very sorry to bother you right now, but the company is required to conduct its own investigation. You understand.” Sam pressed on, and she nodded. I forgot to mention, we were insurance investigators.
“Sure.”
“So, if you could tell us anything you remember about the night your husband died.” I asked, sitting down next to her.
“Uh, Tony and I were just supposed to have dinner. He called and said he was having computer troubles and that, that he had to work late. That was it.” Karen recounted, and I nodded.
“Do you have any idea who could have done this to him?”
“No, like I told the police, I… I have no idea.”
”Did Tony mention anything, you know, unusual to you? In the days before his death?” Dean asked.
“Unusual…”
“Yeah, like… strange?”
“Strange?”
“Y’know, like… weird noises, visions-“ I cleared my throat, stopping Dean.
“He had a nightmare the day before he died.” She whispered, and Carl wrote it down on my flip notebook, and I was loosely holding the pen to give an impression that I was writing and not a magic pen.
“What kind of a nightmare?” Sam frowned.
“Uh, he said that he woke up in the middle of the night and there was a woman standing at the foot of the bed, he blinked and she was gone, I mean, it was just a nightmare.”
“Did he say what she looked like?” Dean asked.
“What the hell difference does it make of what she looked like?!”
“Our company’s thorough, Mrs Giles.” I smiled, stepping in to save Dean’s butt. Again. “We’d like to get a detailed description of the days prior to the incident so then we can make a good analysis. As many details as you can spare, if that’s ok.”
“Yeah.” She nodded, calming down, while Carl wrote down ‘good job’ on the paper. “He said she was pale, and she had dark red eyes.”
“Thank you for your time.” I gave Karen a side hug, giving her my fake calling card, but had my burner phone number. “Call me if you need anything.”
Tumblr media
“I told Karen to call me if she had any problems and then we set off.”
“Doesn’t explain why you broke into Anthony Giles’ office.” He persisted.
“Okay, look, Karen called us later, said that there was some stuff that she wanted from Tony's office, but the police weren't letting her in- like, a picture of the two of them in Paris, and some other stuff. She gave us the key. It wasn’t a break in.”
Tumblr media
“Hey. Anthony Giles' body was found right about here.” Sam gestured.
“Throat slit so deep, part of his spinal cord was showing.” I read out, sitting at the computer.
Dean whistled. “What do you think? Vengeful spirit? Underlining vengeful?”
“Yeah, maybe. I mean he did see that woman at the foot of his bed.” Sam shrugged. I found something at the printer, whipping it out.
“Take a look at this.” I showed it to them. It had the word/thing ‘danashulps’ written all over it. “Dana Shulps.”
“A name?”
“A name that’s everywhere.” Dean chuckled. “Well, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
Sam checked the desk, shining his torch down. Then he breathed on it, revealing the word Dana Shulps. “Well, I think we’ve crossed over to a whole new level of weird.”
“Tell me about it.” I typed quickly, trying to crack the password to Giles’ computer.
”Maybe Giles knew her.” Dean suggested.
“Or it’s the name of our red-eyed mystery girl.” Sam shrugged. We went through available files, I scoured the internet, hacked into police databases, but…
“Nada.” I grimaced. “No girl name Dana Shulps ever died a horrible death or even existed. The surname Shulps isn’t even a name.”
“So what now?” Dean groaned.
“I’m a few clicks away from unlocking Giles’ laptop.” I clicked my tongue. “There could be something in his personal files.”
“How long?” Sam asked.
“Fifteen minutes, give or take. Carl, lend a nib.” Carl started helping, while I counted down the seconds until-
There we go.
“Seriously?” Sam sighed.
 Dean’s fart noises.
Tumblr media
”Your story checks out.” Rhodes nodded, closing the case. “But fact remains that Dean was found at Karen Giles’ murder scene.”
”Fact remains that Dean Winchester saved my life.” I frowned. “On multiple occasions, won’t specify which, and if that warrants anything, it warrants a hell lot of respect and favours. Come on, Serge. You’re smart, it’s obvious. You’re probably the type of guy to take one look at who you’re dealing with and say whether they’re guilty or not. And you’ve taken a long, hard look at Dean. At me, maybe even Sam. Give me your honest opinion. Do you think any of us are guilty?”
”No.” Rhodes admitted. “Facts don’t add up. Dean wasn’t holding a weapon when they found him. He wasn’t present at the murder of Tony Giles. No prints, no DNA, just him conveniently at the scene. But I’ve got nothing else to work with, unless something else is at play here, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was because a murder isn’t that clean cut.”
“What if it was something else?” I shrugged.
“What are you suggesting?”
“At the crime scene, we found two words written over and over. Dana Shulps.” I showed him the printed paper. “Help me figure out what this means. If you find Dean guilty after this, go ahead, arrest him, put him on trial and get him in prison with a lifer, but for now, consider the fact that he’s innocent.”
James sighed, conceding. “Fine, but it has to look like I’m interrogating you.”
“Not so much of an even worse cop, huh?”
“I bend to reason. Now, Dana.” I wrote down the name, staring at it.
“Best thing I’ve got is an anagram.” I shrugged, tapping a pen on the table.
“Scramble it, then?” We both wrote down the words in different ways, switching things up, thinking, until I got something.
“Ashland sound familiar?” I asked, and he nodded.
“Ashland’s a street name.” A woman knocked and walked in, and she looked to be in her late forties. Her badge read ‘D. Ballard.’
“Detective Ballard.” Rhodes’ demeanour switched up, turning to Ballard with a smug air. Wow, that was quick. Smoother than butter. “How’re things going with Sam Winchester?”
“Story matches Dean’s. How about Rainer?” Ballard replied.
“We’re getting somewhere.” He smirked, glancing back at me. “Miss Rainer and I were having an intense heart to heart, but story still matches the other two’s. Though, I have to say, tough customer. Not sure Pete would be able to keep his cool for long if he had her.”
“I doubt it too.” She nodded. “Keep at it, we can only hold ‘em for 48 hours.” She left, and Rhodes switched again, turning back to me with an easy smile.
“How’d I do?”
“You lie almost as well as I do.” I grinned. “Am I turning a good boy soft?”
“Cut the bad girl act, Rainer.” Rhodes chuckled. “Yeah, I have to admit, I was checking you out, but I can look through a guise if I see one.”
“Again, flattered.”
“You’re a hard case to crack, aren’t you?”
“I like to give people a challenge.” I wrote on the paper. “Get this to Dean and Sam, any way you can without being spotted. They need to know.”
He took the paper, standing up. “I hope to God that you’re right, Rainer.” He left, leaving me to contemplate all my life decisions.
”Trust me, I hope so too.” I sighed.
Tumblr media
Rhodes came into my room later, looking grim.  “I got you a ticket out, but Dean’s decided to confess. You might wanna come watch.”
“Confess to what, though?” I asked, picking up my leather jacket and putting it on.
“That’s what I wanna find out.” We went into the interrogation room, where they were setting up a camera.
“Beanie.” Dean grinned upon seeing me. “Are you ok?”
”I’m doing fine.” I nodded.
”Your boyfriend decided to confess, sweetheart.” One detective smirked. “Speak directly to the camera, and state your name for the record.”
Dean faced the camera, a smug smirk on his face. Wait, I know what he’s going to do. “My name is Dean Winchester. I'm an Aquarius.” Here we go. “I enjoy sunsets, long walks on the beach, and frisky women. And I did not kill anyone. But I know who did. Or rather what did. Of course it can't be for sure, because our investigation was interrupted. But our working theory was that we're looking for some kind of vengeful spirit.”
”Excuse me?” Ballard scoffed.
“You know, Casper the bloodthirsty ghost?” Dean shrugged. “Tony Giles saw it. I'll bet you cash money Karen did too. But see, the interesting thing is the word it leaves behind. For some reason it's trying to tell us something. But communicating across the veil, it ain't easy. You know, sometimes the spirits, they, they get things jumbled. You remember ‘REDRUM’. Same concept. You know, it's, uh, maybe word fragments... other times, it's anagrams. See, at first we thought this was a name, Dana Shulps. But now we think it's a street. Ashland. Whatever's going on, I'll bet you it started there.”
“You arrogant ass.” Detective Sheridan hissed. “Tony and Karen were good people, and you're making jokes.”
”I’m not joking, Ponch.”
”You murdered them in cold blood just like that girl in St. Louis!”
“Oh, yeah. That wasn't me either. That was a shape-shifter creature that only looked like me.” Sheridan lost his temper, hauling Dean up by his collar and slamming him against the wall. I was going to step in when Rhodes held me back, other officers jumping in to help.
”Pete!” Ballard gasped.
“That’s ENOUGH!” Rhodes yelled, stopping everyone. “I’ll cuff him myself, just go return to your jobs. Rainer, you stay with me.” Everyone left, leaving Dean, Rhodes and I alone.
“Well done, you locked me up.” Dean grimaced as he looked down at the cuffs now around his wrists.  “Whatcha gonna do, gloat?”
”Ask you two if this Casper thing is real.” The answer took Dean aback, and he blinked at Rhodes, wondering why. “I talked to Rainer. The facts don’t add up, and a spirit seems most obvious when it comes to a murder with no prints or DNA.”
“Beanie, you sly fox.” He chuckled.  “She can talk her way out of anything.”
”Long story short, yeah, it is.” I nodded. “Shifter is real too, all of the likes of it are.”
”So, Ashland?”
“Street name.” Rhodes nodded.  “Why this spirit is trying to tell us that, I’m not sure.”
”The girl died there.” Ballard stepped in, and Dean sighed, rolling his eyes and opening his mouth to speak. “Can we make this quick? I'm a little tired, it's been a long day, you know, with your partner assaulting me and all.”
“I want to know more about the stuff you were talking about earlier.” She gulped.
“Time Life. Mysteries of the Unknown. Look it up.”
”Let’s pretend for a moment that you aren’t entirely insane.”
“Mhmm.”
”What would one of these things be doing here?”
”A vengeful spirit? Well, they're created by violent deaths. And then they come back for a reason, usually a nasty one. Like revenge on the people that hurt 'em.”
I noticed something on Rhodes’ wrist, and I took out, pushing up his sleeve.
“Where did you get these?” I asked.
”These weren’t there before.” He gulped, looking freaked. Ballard pulled up her sleeve too, showing the bruises.
“You two saw it, didn’t you?” Dean frowned.
“How did you know?” Ballard gasped.
“Because Karen had the same bruises on her wrists. And I'm willing to bet that if you look at Giles' autopsy photos he's got 'em too, it's got something to do with this spirit, I... I don't know what.” He paused, staring at Ballard’s stunned expression as she turned away. “I know. You think you're going crazy. But let's skip that part, shall we? Because the last two people who saw this thing? Died, pretty soon after. You hear me?”
“You think we’re going to die.” Rhodes breathed.
“You need to find Sam.” Dean urged. “He can help, and so can Ivonne.”
”You’re giving up your brother.” Ballard stammered.
“Go with Beanie. She’ll find Sam and they can help figure this out. You can arrest him if you want, or you can let him help you.”
“Lead the way, Rainer.” Rhodes agreed, and I immediately walked out of the door, both of them following.
Tumblr media
I knocked on Sam’s door at the motel. “Jim Rockford? It’s Tabitha from room service.” Sam opened it immediately, spotting the two behind us. “They saw it. This is James Rhodes and you know Detective Ballard.”
”Get in.” We all got inside, and Sam hugged me before turning to the other two, holding their wrists. “These showed up after you saw it?”
“Yeah.” Rhodes nodded.
“You know, I must be losing my mind. You're a fugitive. I should be arresting you.” Ballard shakily told us, but we shared a look.
“Fine. Arrest Sam, then.” I shrugged. “After we save your life. For now, just trust us to do this, ok?”
“She’s right, Diana.” Rhodes vouched, and she conceded. I gave him a thankful smile, pulling out Sam’s folder of crime scene photos and booking photos.
“Okay, great. Now, this spirit. What did it look like?”
“She was, um, really pale, and her throat was cut, and her eyes, they were like, this deep dark red? It appeared like she was trying to talk to me. But she couldn't. It was just... a lot of blood.” Diana stammered.
“Alright.” I showed them the photos. “I’m gonna flick through these one by one, and you’re gonna tell me if you recognise her.” I went through the photos one by one, and then Rhodes cleared his throat when I stopped at one.
“That’s her.” He nodded.
“Yeah.” Diana agreed.
“Claire Becker? Twenty eight years old, disappeared about eight or nine months ago.” Sam frowned.
“But we don't even know her. I mean, why would she come after us?”
“Well, before her death, she was arrested twice. For dealing heroin. You ever work narcotics?”
“Pete, Diana and I did.” Rhodes gulped.
“Did you bust her? Any of you?” I asked.
“I did, but I got her a shorter sentence than she was going to get.”
“It says that she was last seen entering 2911 Ashland Street. Police searched the place, didn't find anything. Guess we gotta check it out ourselves. See if we can find her body.”
“What?” Diana coughed.
“Well, we gotta salt and burn her bones. It's the only way to put her spirit to rest.” Sam explained.
”Of course it is.”
“You guys go and have a glass of water. Keep an eye on each other. Ivy and I need to talk.” The other two went into the room behind us so Sam and I could have a chat.
“Rhodes seems to be taking it well.” I smiled. “Ballard, not so much.”
“I think Rhodes is taking it well cause of you.” Sam smirked, and laughed when I raised an eyebrow. “Don’t think I don’t see the sparks. Dean would’ve already commented on it.”
“He’s a man of the law.” I sighed. “I have more fake IDs than I’ve had birthdays.”
“Maybe that’s the danger of it. Forbidden love-“ I slapped him across the head with a piece of paper. “Ow, okay, okay!”
“You better not mention to this to Dean.”
“I think he knows.”
Tumblr media
We walked into an abandoned warehouse, my gun drawn just in case.
“A firearm?” Rhodes scoffed.
“It’s licensed, so untwist your boxers.” I smirked.
“So what exactly are we looking for?”
“We’ll let you know once we find it.” Sam informed, then we split up, searching for a possible place to hide a body. I scaled the wall, knocking on it to try and find a bit of hollow wall that I could bust open-
“Sam!” I heard Diana yell, sounding scared. “Sam! James! IVONNE!” All three of us came running back, and we found Diana alone.
“What happened?” I asked. “Did you see Claire?”
“She, she was here.”
“Did she attack you?” Sam questioned, looking around.
“No, she was just… reaching out to me. She was over there by the window.“ There was a shelf blocking the window, so Sam and Rhodes got to work and moved it, revealing the word ‘ASHLAND SUP’.
“I’m guessing the SUP started the word supplies.” I grinned, then followed the reflection to a wall on the other side. “Sam, did you bring the sledgehammer?” Sam held it up, so I took it and started cracking a hole the wall. I peered in, and nodded. “Yep. There’s something here.” Sam joined me and helped me tear the rest of the wall open, revealing Claire Becker’s body.
“God.” Rhodes breathed.
“Something about this is bothering me.” Sam frowned.
“You’re digging up a corpse.” Diana pointed out.
“Digging them up is pretty par for the course. But why would a vengeful spirit lead us to her corpse?” We bent down to take a look, and Diana reached out, touching the necklace.
“Does it mean something to you?” I asked.
“That necklace. It’s rare, custom made on Carson Street.” She pulled out the same one from her neckline. “I have one just like it. Pete gave it to me.”
“Now this all makes perfect sense.” Sam nodded, piecing it all together.
“What does?” Rhodes frowned. “Apart from Pete killing Claire.”
“Claire’s not a vengeful spirit, she’s a death omen.” I explained. “She’s not killing people, she’s warning them that they’ll die by the same hand she did. You see, sometimes spirits, they don't want vengeance, they want justice. Which is why she led us here in the first place. She wants us to know who her killer is.“
“Detective, how much do you know about your partner?” Sam asked.
“Oh my god.” Diana gasped.
“What?”
“About a year ago, some heroin went missing from lockup. Obviously it was a cop. We never found out who did it. But whoever did it would need someone to fence their product.”
“Someone like a heroin dealer. Someone like Claire.”
“I’m going to make a phone call, find out where Dean is.” Rhodes stood up, pulling out his phone and walking to another corner. “If we’re right, he could be next.”
“Did you bring the Mustang?” Sam asked me, and I held up my keys.
“Yeah.” I nodded, then turned to Claire’s body. “We’ll catch him.”
Rhodes came back, looking freaked again. “Pete just left with Dean. Said he had to be transferred and just took off. He’s not answering the radio, either.”
“We need to cut him off.” I grimaced, cocking my gun. “He’s in a county vehicle, so we need to access the lo-jack and find the route. Let’s go!”
Tumblr media
I was driving with my pedal to the metal, with Diana and Sam in the back and Rhodes at the front with me.
“Tell me.” Rhodes turned to me with a smile. “How does a girl like you end up in a job like yours?”
“What do you mean, a girl like me?” I chuckled, raising an eyebrow.
“You’re smart, quick on your feet, obviously good with a gun. You got almost perfect scores on your LSAT and SAT, got into Princeton, practically a shoo in almost anywhere. You could’ve been great on the force, instead you’re hunting the impossible.”
“Hunting the impossible seems like a better option, in my opinion.” We reached the GPS location of the county vehicle, appearing behind Sheridan just as he was about to kill Dean.
“Pete!” Diana yelled. “Put the gun down!”
”Diana?” Sheridan gasped. “How'd you find me?”
“I know about Claire.”
“I don't know what you're talking about.”
“Put the gun down!”
“Oh, I don't think so. You're fast. I'm pretty sure I'm faster.”
“Why are you doing this?” She asked.
“I didn’t do anything, Diana.” Sheridan lied, while I flicked down the safety pin on my gun.
“It’s a little bit late for that.”
“It wasn't my fault. Claire was trying to turn me in, I had no choice.”
“You had a choice, Pete.” Rhodes frowned. “Instead you killed an innocent woman. Then why Tony and Karen?”
“Same thing! Tony scrubbed the money, he got skittish, and then he wanted to come clean. I'm sure he told Karen everything.” He reasoned. “It was a mess; I had to clean it up. I just panicked.”
“How many more people are going to die over this, Pete?”
“There's a way out. This Dean kid's a friggin' gift. We could pin the whole thing on him. Right? No trial, nothing. Just, just one more dead scumbag.”
“Hey!” Dean barked, but backed away when the gun was turned on him. I rolled my eyes, ready to pounce, but with a gun trained on Dean it wouldn’t be wise.
“No one will question it. Diana, please. I still love you.” I gave Diana a look, but she put her gun down. “Thank you. Thank you.” Sheridan turned to Dean, but then Diana quickly picked up her gun, shooting Pete in the stomach and making him fall, giving Dean time to roll out of the way.
“Then why don’t you buy me another necklace, you ass?!” She hissed, before she was tackled herself, and Sheridan got up, instantly going for the gun, facing off Rhodes and Sam. However, Claire showed up behind Sheridan, making him turn around and gasp in horror as she smiled, giving me time to pull the trigger and shoot him in the back. He fell to the floor, more permanently this time, and Claire gave me a nod before disappearing.
“Hell of a shot.” Rhodes breathed, glancing to me.
“Thanks.” I smiled. We gave Diana time to mourn her partner, then she came back to us.
“You doin' all right?” Sam asked, concerned.
“No, not really. The death omen Claire, what happens to her now?”
“Should be over. She should be at rest.”
“So, what now, officers?” Dean asked.
“Pete did confess to me. He screwed up both your cases royally. I'd say that there's a good chance that we could get your cases dismissed.” Rhodes explained.
“You’d take care of that?” I smiled.
“I hope so. But the St. Louis murder charges? That's another story. I can't help you. Unless... I just happened to turn my back, and you walked away. I could just tell them that the suspects escaped.”
“You sure?” Sam blinked.
“Yeah, they’re sure, Sam.” Dean urged.
“No, I mean, you could lose your jobs over that.”
“Look, we just want you guys out there doing what you do best. Trust me, I'll sleep better at night.” Diana sighed. “Listen, you need to watch your back. They're gonna be looking for the three of you right now. Get out of here. I gotta radio this in.”
“Do you know where my car is by any chance?” Dean asked.
“It’s in an impound lot on Robertson’s.” She gave Dean a look. “No. You’re not stealing it.”
“Of course not.” I smiled, patting the boys on the shoulder. “We’ve got my Mustang, and we’ll improvise. We’re good at that.”
“Clearly.” Rhodes grinned, and Dean and Sam shared a look.
“We’ll meet you at the car.” Dean smirked, dragging Sam with him. Diana had slipped off, leaving me and Rhodes.
“This’ll be one heck of a story to tell.”
“I bet.” I laughed, storing my gun in my arm holster. “Just leave out the part of the death omen and people won’t call you insane.”
“That sounds best.” He chuckled. “You’re a really hard case, Rainer, you know that, right?”
“I’ve heard. Well, I’ve better get going.” I smiled, then pulled my car keys out of my pocket. I stared at them, then raised an eyebrow. “Wait, I have my keys. If I have them, how are the boys in the-“ My focus was thrown off course by a pair of lips on mine, an arm wrapping around my waist. I dropped my keys because of the impact, forgetting about them and cupping the nape of his neck, the other arm hanging loosely around it. I could feel his smile, tilting his head-
“HAUN HAUN! YOU GOT THE GIRL, OUI OUI?!” I pulled away, turning to where Dean was.
“DEAN WINCHESTER, I’M GONNA KILL YOU!” I yelled, then stepped back from Rhodes. “Sorry about them.”
“Nah, you’re good.” He picked up my keys and gave them to me, kissing me again quickly and then my hand. “It’s gonna take a lot to forget you, Rainer.”
“Don’t worry about that, Serge, nobody can forget me.” I handed him a note with my burner cell number. “Call me sometime. If I don’t pick up, I’m hunting another demon. And, uh, call me Ivy.”
“Then call me James.” He took the note, pocketing it. “I’ll lead the cops off your trail. Just go, and don’t die, cause those two will need your help. You’re a smooth talker.”
“I guess that solves the mystery of why I joined them in the first place.” I smiled. “See you around, James.”
“You too, Ivy.” I walked back to the Mustang, unlocking it and getting in.
“You boys are idiots.”
“I like him the best.” Dean smirked. “Cool dude.”
“Yeah, we love a rogue officer.” Sam teased.
“Shut up, you two.” I groaned, flooring it and waving goodbye out of the window to James, who was watching me leave.

FNF prez Eddie Muller responds to film noir fan questions fielded by the Foundation's Director of Communications Anne Hockens. In this episode, we discuss, A WOMAN’S FACE, DECEPTION, CRY VENGEANCE, proto-noirs, the prevalence of the amnesia trope in film noir, and more. We wind with a discussion of film noir posters. Sorry folks, no cats this week.

This week’s questions:
When you do Grand Lake intro and outro shoots, what kind of crew do you have or is it self-inflicted? Jay and Connie, Ann Arbor
I have heard you mention several times on your show that were plans to make a film version of Dashiell Hammett's book RED HARVEST. But you also added that this film was never made for various reasons. Does a screenplay of that film exist and can it be purchased? Loren, Chicago
Can you think of an actor/actress with a noir performance that surprised you given the films or TV you had seen them in before? Ryan from Rhode Island
It seems that many classic noir actors and actresses were able to parlay their fame into popular TV series in the 1950s and '60's.  Do either of you have a favorite TV show in that regard? Joe, Redondo Beach CA
Before film noir became a thing in the 1940s, there were other films that had strong noir elements, either in style or content or both. What are some of the best and/or most influential proto-noirs? Kathleen from Chicago
I just recently saw A WOMAN'S FACE. I thought it was excellent and Ms. Crawford was superb in the role of Anna Holm.  Eddie, would you consider it a film noir and if so, would you consider showing it on NOIR ALLEY? Richard, New York
I just watched DECEPTION (1946) for the first time. What an amazing film with the main performances by Bette Davis, Paul Henreid, but especially from Claude Rains. I wanted to know your thoughts on the film, but especially the ending. For me, it was a total letdown. Marty, Fond du Lac, WI
What are your favorite noir movies that use amnesia as a major plot device? Why did it become so popular? Ciao, Andy
After reading Sharon Knolle's article "Hard Luck Dogs: How Animals Reveal The Tender Heart of Noir" in Noir City issue 17. One of my favorite dog cameos is a dachshund that wanders into a shot and appears to be begging the camera operator for a snack in CRY VENGEANCE. I was wondering if you might have some insights or thoughts on this fun noir film.  Any info would be greatly appreciated. James in Atlanta
Film noir movie posters are great to look at. All the ones I’ve come across seem to have pulp influences.  What started that? Was it pulp paperbacks or magazines? We’re all noir movie posters of the time (40’s and 50’s) generally the same in this regard or were there any more subtle styles? Eddie: I remember you mentioning that you purchased a bunch of old movie posters. Which turned out to be your favorite? Steve in Exeter New Hampshire

FIC REC WEEK 2 – WINTERIRON FAVORITES
SERIES: The Silver Age by copperbadge
Pairing: Bucky/Tony Rating: E Words: 87,354 Tags: 1960s, PTSD, Recovery
Summary: An alternate universe in which Tony Stark was born in 1950 and the Winter Soldier was recovered in 1967, after a failed attempt to assassinate Howard and Maria Stark.
Reasons why I love it: One of my favorite things about this series is Tony's relationship with his parents, which is something I never thought I'd say, since most fics portray them as irredeemable. Tony's characterization in this is also fantastic, and I really love Bucky's emotional development. Plus, the family feels that start to creep in towards the middle make it all even better. I love this series, and I highly encourage you to check it out!
This series consists of:
The Soldier And The Hurricane
Pairing: Bucky & Tony, Howard/Maria Rating: T Words: 18,899 Tags: Canon Divergence, Parent-Child Relationship, Recovery
Summary: When the Winter Soldier fails to kill Howard and Maria Stark and is taken prisoner in the summer of 1967, his salvation comes in the unlikely form of a Russian-speaking, father-disobeying, endlessly-tinkering seventeen-year-old: Tony Stark.
Reasons why I love it: There is so much subtle world building in this. All the references and talk about “modern” science really drive home what time period this is set in. And while I absolutely love Bucky and Tony's budding relationship here, what really stole my heart was – unexpectedly – Howard Stark. He's such a great character in this, and I really love how he's portrayed as a genuinely caring father, even if he can't always show it. This fic is amazing on its own, but it's only the start to this fantastic series, so let's hop over to the next!
The Pretender And The Prince
Pairing: Bucky/Tony, Peggy/Angie Rating: E Words: 25,934 Tags: PTSD, Super Soldier Serum, Post-Recovery
Summary: It's the fall of 1967, and Tony Stark is determined to do his father proud as the new head of Stark Robotics. Between his growing relationship with Tony and his new life as a recovering assassin, Bucky's just trying to stay on his feet. Then someone takes a shot at Tony in the middle of a busy workday, and all bets are off...
Reasons why I love it: Aaaah, young love! I adore all of the action in this, and I really enjoyed the surprise appearance of someone I didn't expect to see. Angie is beyond lovely, and Howard continues to be one of my favorite characters in this fic, who would've thought. Jarvis and Ana are actual angels, and Bucky and Tony's developing relationship makes me want to swoon. This fic is fantastic, a perfect sequel to the first!
The Captain And The Ghost
Pairing: Bucky/Tony, Rhodey/Carol Rating: T Words: 26,030 Tags: Arctic Exploration, Cold War, Steve Recovery
Summary: In the summer of 1970, Tony Stark is leading the expedition ship Marvel in search of the body of Steve Rogers. He has good friends with him: ship's captain Carol Danvers, medic Sam Wilson, best friend James Rhodes and boyfriend James Barnes, as well as scientist Vernon van Dyne and his daughter Janet. But they've also been assigned a diplomatic observer from the USSR named Natalia Romanoff, and the barren chill of Greenland is not the only threat dogging their search.
Reasons why I love it: The whole arctic rescue mission is fantastic. Natasha makes for a really interesting character, and it's great to see real life events so seamlessly woven into the story. Also, the brief arc where Bucky completely trounces Tony's insecurities in regard to Steve is great. This fic is amazing, and a wonderful addition to this series.
The Comrade And The Carnie
Pairing: Bucky/Tony, Natasha/Sam Rating: G Words: 4,871 Tags: 1970s, Avengers Family, Amusement Parks
Summary: The Stark Family And Adopted Waifs field trip to Coney Island to buy Natasha a hot dog started out with nine people and ended with ten. Well, Clint didn't take up much space and was impressively skilled...
Reasons why I love it: Picking up a stray Clint Barton, because why not? I love Maria's Home for Wayward Orphans, and Natasha continues to be a delight. And I'm so happy she got her promised hot dog. I love this fic, and I hope you check it out for yourself!
The Music Room And The Penthouse
Pairing: Bucky/Tony Rating: T Words: 1,802 Tags: 1970s, Broadway, Musicals
Summary: Maria Stark makes a place for her son's many friends; Tony also makes his own place for them.
Reasons why I love it: The way Tony talks about Natasha and how he wants to help her hit me out of nowhere with the feels. I love that we get to see a quiet moment between him and his mom, I feel like I haven't seen that nearly enough in fandom, because it's beautiful. And oh my god, the music scene is so fucking sweet, it's amazing. I love this one!
The Ranger And The Stray
Pairing: Bucky/Tony, Clint/Coulson Rating: T Words: 6,330 Tags: Kidnapping, Friends to Lovers, Star Wars References
Summary: Clint Barton was always the kid brother in the background, until one day he definitely was not.
Reasons why I love it: Fuck yeah, Shieldhusbands are in! Clint's crush on Coulson – and Coulson't crush on Clint later on – is so fucking cute. They deserve each other, awkward beans that they are. Also, the line “as surrogate little brothers went, Clint made a pretty good Stark” made me aww out loud. Plus, canon crashing in is always fun. I love it.
The Brother And The Mother
Pairing: Clint/Coulson Rating: T Words: 3,488 Tags: 1970s, Family, Blackmail
Summary: Clint's brother shows up, and Clint disappears.
Reasons why I love it: I'm so happy that we get more Shieldhusbands after the last one. In unrelated news, Maria Stark is a fucking boss ass queen, and I love her. The whole Clint Barton defense squad is fucking adorable, and I love how they literally treat each other as family. This is such a great ending to this series, and I enjoyed every word of it. Please go and check it out for yourself if you haven't, because the whole thing's amazing!

Braking Their Fall
This is a fill for today's @flashfictionfridayofficial prompt [#FFF212 Gotta Go Fast] along with my @allcapsbingo Pararescue Sam Wilson square. It's a remix of my Stony No Powers AU in-progress fic Falling for You and contains spoilers for Chapter Two (coming this weekend) - so read at your own risk!
Fandom: MCU/Marvel Pairing: Sam Wilson & James ‘Rhodey’ Rhodes (background Steve Rogers/Tony Stark) Rating: Teen Tags: No Powers AU, Skydiving, Peril, Remix
“Shouldn’t Steve and Tony’s drogue have deployed by now?” Jim shouted over his shoulder as they cleared the plane. Sam had been a little iffy about having another airman as a tandem skydive client - the phrase ‘knows enough to be dangerous’ came to mind - but Jim Rhodes had been great so far, paying attention during the briefing and listening to Sam’s instructions as they buckled themselves together and headed out the door.
“Yeah,” Sam shouted back - his partner and client had jumped first and were almost a minute into their freefall. “He’s probably showing off a little. Trying to impress your friend.”
“I’m sure Tony was impressed the moment he laid eyes on Steve. Probably like to lay a lot more on him, if you know what I mean.”
“He would be totally down for that,” Sam replied, but he was starting to get a little concerned. That drogue was an important element of a tandem jump and it wasn’t like Steve to hot dog this much. Then he spotted the plume of red smoke.
“Shit,” Sam swore.
“I see it too,” Jim replied. “They’re in trouble, aren’t they?”
“Looks like it – you up for a real dive?”
“Just tell me what I gotta do.” Jim was immediately all business; anticipating Sam’s instructions by pulling his arms back into his body and straightening out his legs. Sam in turn jettisoned their drogue and shifted them into a head-down position so they could pick up speed.
Years of pararescue experience had honed Sam’s reflexes, and he and Steve had practiced this kind of maneuver before, but never when they were both tandeming. While Jim’s extra weight should overcome the additional air resistance during their dive, it was still going to be a real close thing as to whether they could catch up to Steve and Tony in time.
As they approached their fellow skydivers, Sam strained his eyes to see what had gone wrong. It looked like the release cord had separated from the handle and was flapping just out of Steve’s reach. Jim was doing an amazing job of holding still and letting Sam control the dive; clearly he understood the gravity of the situation.
Sam steered them as close as he dared; it was going to take perfect timing to grab the cord and then pull it hard enough to release the chute without sending Steve and Tony tumbling out of control.
“I got you!” Sam shouted, darting out his hand at the last second to yank on the cord. They shot by, Sam leaning hard to one side to clear their airspace, then looking back to see Steve’s chute filling with air.
“Did it work?” Jim craned his neck around to try to spot their companions.
“Hell yeah it did!” Sam crowed triumphantly. “Hang on - blowing our chute now!”
It was a harder jolt than usual; going from what must’ve been over a hundred and fifty miles an hour to right around twenty. But Jim just let out a grunt. “Are they going to be all right?” he asked a bit breathlessly a moment later
Sam looked again to make sure Steve had control of the chute and was heading toward their drop zone. “Yeah, looks like it. Might be a rough landing for them, though.” He steered their chute back on course. “Speaking of rough - you okay?”
“I’m not used to losing a couple hundred feet in altitude without a plane around me,” Jim replied, “but yeah.” He looked back over at their companions drifting earthwards. “You know, if things work out between them - they’re gonna have a hell of a meet-cute story.”

Summary:
The Avengers have all moved into the tower, and that includes Loki. Thanksgiving has just past, their first all together, and now Tony gets to introduce his found family to a personal holiday tradition - Big Sandwich Night.
Notes:
The inspiration for this fic comes from this Tumblr post, originally posted by @mousemilf, based on a family tradition of their own that they discussed in that post. It sparked a need in me to write some fluffy 2012 post-NY Battle Avengers all living in the tower with Loki fic. Yes, there is a big sandwich, and yes, I managed to make myself real damned hungry while writing it.
I hope you all enjoy this little out of the blue ficlet full of fluffy, happy, foody goodness.
End Notes:
Please feed me. It's after midnight, and I'm hungry. I'm a gremlin.
Also yes, the Friends references were intentional (unplanned but intentional), and cookies to those who get why I used them.

1500 words written today -- on the downswing of the chapter and it’s possible I’ll finish tomorrow, though the way my Sundays go, probably not.
Snippet from Of Home Near chapter 4.
“You went through my sketchbook?” Steve demanded.
“What part of ‘suspected of being a double agent’ don’t you understand?” she said.  She tapped a finger against the page.  “Identify these people, please.”
It was one of the pages of faces and busts he had drawn.  Steve shot her a betrayed look, then leaned over it and said, “Clint Barton, James Rhodes, Maria Hill, Sam Wilson, Wanda Maximoff –” as Peggy’s finger moved from one sketch to another.  “Thor, Nat, King T’Challa, Bucky Barnes –”
He hesitated, shut his eyes briefly, and said, “Tony Stark –”
Peggy’s head shot up. “Stark?”
Steve shook his head, but it was in frustration, not denial.  “He’s Howard’s son.  And he hates me, for the record; I haven’t seen him in two years since we…tried to kill each other.”
Peggy’s eyebrows were still raised towards her hairline.  It wasn’t an enormous surprise to hear that Howard had a child, given his general tomcat ways, but it was still something of a shock.  Not to mention – “Tried to kill each other?”
Steve’s jaw tightened. “It’s a long story.”
“Shorten it,” Morita suggested.
He shook his head again, but said, “Tony and I were – friends, I guess, before; we worked together. He’s got a suit…that’s not important.”
Peggy guessed that meant something other than the product of a Savile Row tailor’s shop, but didn’t interrupt him.
“I found out something about how Howard and Maria – Howard’s wife, Tony’s mom –”
“Howard got married?” Peggy interrupted.  “To a woman?”

Summer Fic Reading Bingo
Tumblr media
I usually try not to read in the fandom I'm currently writing in (Marvel) for fear that it will muddle up my characterizations with what I'm reading, but since my go-to for reading right now is Witcher fic which is historical in canon, I had to dip back into Marvel to find something historical AU. Fortunately, several fics in this series checked off boxes, and I got my first bingos!
The series is called The Silver Age by copperbadge and it's a canon-divergent AU that takes place subsequent to Howard Stark surviving the Winter Soldier's assassination attempt and capturing the Soldier instead. Featuring teenage Tony (at the start) and then younger versions of almost all our beloved characters.
Historical AU:
The Soldier and the Hurricane by copperbadge When the Winter Soldier fails to kill Howard and Maria Stark and is taken prisoner in the summer of 1967, his salvation comes in the unlikely form of a Russian-speaking, father-disobeying, endlessly-tinkering seventeen-year-old: Tony Stark.
Domestic/curtain fic:
The Pretender and the Prince by copperbadge
It's the fall of 1967, and Tony Stark is determined to do his father proud as the new head of Stark Robotics. Between his growing relationship with Tony and his new life as a recovering assassin, Bucky's just trying to stay on his feet. Then someone takes a shot at Tony in the middle of a busy workday, and all bets are off...
Daring rescue:
The Captain and the Ghost by copperbadge
In the summer of 1970, Tony Stark is leading the expedition ship Marvel in search of the body of Steve Rogers.
Gen fic:
The Comrade and the Carney by copperbadge
The Stark Family And Adopted Waifs field trip to Coney Island to buy Natasha a hot dog started out with nine people and ended with ten. Well, Clint didn't take up much space and was impressively skilled...
For angst...well, I read another Witcher fic that was 100k of angst and marked complete when it was very much NOT complete, and in fact ended on a cliffhanger, so we're not going to talk about that one.
Four more fics until blackout! If anyone has recs for these topics in fandoms I'm in, please lay them on me. I'm not usually one for high school au or bodyswap, but I think the point of @ficreadingchallenge is to expand my horizons so I'm game to find out!
