Broke? That's fine. I'm biting the bullet and going to place gameplay of the Gabriel Knight Series without commentary. Sexual themes, the occult, religion, disturbing imagery - especially for a scene in the second game that made me 0.0 fucking Von Zell - and oodles of generational trauma. If you like Buffy, Supernatural, Women of the Otherworld / Bitten, TVD, Shadowhunters, etc? You'd like this.
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. Non remake.
Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers. The remake.
Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within.
Gabriel Knight: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned.
While a lot of it is very 90s flavored, and some things might not translate well, it was pretty ahead of its time, especially in regards to the love interests in Gabriel's life. Activision owns it now and sadly, beyond the 2014 remake has been quiet. Sierra Online Games pushed the envelope with storytelling, and even diversity, especially when it came to storytelling and promoting women in the gaming (computer gaming) industry. We'd never have a Gabriel Knight if Jane Jensen didn't play King's Quest - which fourth game, Perils of Rosella, was the first of the series to star a female protagonist - and immediately loved it so much she wanted to get into gaming.
I'll also link to King's Quest someday, too, because that was a huge chunk of my childhood.
Enjoy!

“Women inspired one another even in the early days of games. Jane Jensen played Roberta Williams’ King’s Quest and loved it so much she applied to Sierra On-Line. She went on to co-write a game with Roberta, then solo write the Gabriel Knight series. Stories like these create a snowball effect.” - Mary Kenney, Gamer Girls: 25 Women Who Built the Video Game Industry

I pointed this out on Twitter a while ago, but Lestat from the Interview with the Vampire show looks like the lovechild of Gabriel and Von Glower from Gabriel Knight 2.

Reading the novelization of "Gabriel Knight: The Beast Within," and this has got to be one of the best typos ever:
Jane Jensen's teenage room, maybe:

Sometimes I think about the fact that Jane Jensen really just said fuck it, left game development, and now lives off writing & publishing thinly veiled Johnlock fanfics.
Like, Moebius is basically just Johnlock in a videogame form, though unfortunately it stays queerbaity and the mains are very unlikable as characters.
Also, did I mention her husband's name is Robert Holmes and he's a musician? The pure insanity of it all.

I’ve been meaning to post about this, Robert Holmes as a new album kickstarter out that has a little less than a week left. They just need a little more to be fully funded, and they have a bunch of cool rewards, including concept art, design bibles, and A NEW GABRIEL KNIGHT STORY THAT I DESPERATELY NEED!!
