Clearly the GRR has far-reaching implications for women. But what happens when they point this out? First, the bombastic know-alls who’ve ignored every female writer, lawyer and policymaker for five years pull out their manly opinions. Like Alastair Campbell, who chided Laura Kuenssberg for an interview with Sir Keir Starmer in which she dwelt on the GRR, which affects half the population — but not the important half. Or Lord Falconer, who pompously wafts away concerns, tweeting that “the vast majority” of new male GRC holders “are likely to be genuine”. So what’s a few women facing sexual assault or indecent exposure, an intimidated lesbian or two, or a class of girls unhappily undressing with a teenage boy? These “It might never happen, love” guys don’t think women deserve legislation that protects us in principle. We’re expected to pray that careless laws, framed for others’ benefit, don’t hurt us in practice. And if they do, it’s just an “isolated incident”. Suck it up. And the next one. There’s no pattern. Let’s ignore the inconvenient truth that males commit 98 per cent of sex crime and 90 per cent of violence, whatever their gender identity.

Today, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed the Tennessee Disability and Aging Act, legislation that merges Tennessee’s Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (DIDD) and Commission on Aging and Disability (TCAD), creating a new Department of Disability and Aging (DDA). The bill received unanimous, bipartisan legislative support and was backed by numerous stakeholders.
“When I became governor, I made a commitment to shrink the size of government, ensuring we efficiently and effectively serve all Tennesseans,” said Gov. Lee. “Creating a new Department of Disability and Aging is one example of our work to deliver on that promise, enabling better coordination and stronger advocacy.”
Adults 65 years and older are the fastest-growing demographic in Tennessee. With a rapidly increasing aging population, the state must ensure it has the infrastructure in place to serve the needs of older adults.
TCAD is Tennessee’s federally designated “state unit on aging,” currently overseeing Older Americans Act programs and providing leadership relative to aging issues throughout state government. Tennessee is one of two states that did not previously house its “state unit on aging” within a cabinet-level agency.
Additionally, there are many similarities in the supports and services DIDD and TCAD provide to enhance the quality of life and independence of the populations they serve. Unifying these two agencies will provide for better coordination on areas of shared priorities.
“The consolidation of these government agencies will enhance coordination and advocacy for all Tennesseans to live and age with as much independence and dignity as possible. I appreciate Governor Lee for his commitment to ensuring our government operates efficiently while also providing better services to our citizens.” - Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson, R-Franklin
“Tennessee is a model for the nation when it comes to making government work more cooperatively and efficiently for our citizens. Unifying these agencies will enable better coordination and stronger advocacy helping all Tennesseans live and age with as much independence as possible.” - House Majority Leader William Lamberth, R-Portland
“The merging of the Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities with the Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability is an advantageous step in ensuring all Tennesseans can live and age with independence. I was pleased to sponsor this legislation so both individuals with disabilities and our seniors can be represented by a Commissioner and Department that totally focuses on issues and services important to them. I am confident the newly formed Department of Disability and Aging will offer exceptional service and provide a voice for these valued citizens.” - Senator Becky Massey, R-Knoxville
“People with disabilities and older adults should have the opportunity to age in place while having independence, health, and a high quality of life. I’m excited to work with our partners in both communities to ensure the Department of Disability and Aging is doing all it can to support people to live the lives they envision for themselves.” - Commissioner Brad Turner, Department of Disability and Aging
“We are witnessing a significant milestone with the creation of a new cabinet level department merging the state Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and the Commission on Aging and Disabilities. This is an important step forward for the aging community for today, tomorrow and generations to come. Community advocates representing the 129,000 Tennesseans living with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias in addition to the over 360,000 family caregivers celebrating the actions taken here today.” -Janice Wade Whitehead, Tennessee Commission on Aging & Disability, President & CEO of Alzheimer’s Tennessee

U.S. users email your representatives this, and make sure to include your zip code:
I am your constituent. I am strongly in favor of defunding Israel. I want my opinion logged on every single one of these pieces of legislation. It is an atrocity that the USA is sending our taxpayer dollars, weaponry, and other support to Israel in order to aid in the genocide of the Palestinian people. It does not reflect the will of your constituents, and I demand that you correct this by voting for/against the following bills, resolutions, and legislation.
To be frank, I will be basing my vote for you in upcoming elections on this issue. I will be watching closely to see how you vote on issues regarding funding to Israel. I will not vote for you in the next election if you vote to send any money, support, or weaponry to Israel. I will be voting for you if you vote to block money, support, and weaponry to Israel.
This is the current legislation I am for, and the current legislation I am against. I would like your office to record my opinion for each bill, and I would like you to take this into consideration when you vote.
I am FOR the following, and expect you to vote for this and co-sponsor, either now or when matching legislation reaches your office.
H.Res. 786: by Rep. Cori Bush
H.Res. 388 by Rep. Rashida Tlaib
H.R. 3103 by Rep. Betty McCollum
I am against Joe Biden’s proposal to spend billions of dollars on Israel via a package for Israel, Ukraine, Taiwan, and the US border. Biden is asking for $100 BILLION for this package and it is only 1 YEAR'S worth of funding. This is ABSOLUTELY unacceptable, and I am against you voting for ANY bill that spends even $1 on Israel. I do not care what else is in the bill. If it gives money to Israel, I am against it.
I am AGAINST the following, and expect you to vote against this and not co-sponsor, either now or when matching legislation reaches your office.

I am against any legislation that allows troops to deploy to the Middle East in support roles for Israel, as proposed by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin.
I am against Netanyahu’s ground invasion of Gaza, which will inevitably lead to mass killings of Palestinian civilians and escalate violence. If there are any future bills supporting this, you need to vote against them and not co-sponsor.
The U.S. Constitution and the War Powers Act stipulate that only Congress can authorize the president to use military force in a foreign war, except in cases of self-defense. Previous administrations from both parties have ignored this, with unauthorized strikes in places like Syria and Libya. I want you to stand against ANY use of military force that supports Israel or hurts Palestine.
And of course, I am against the usual funding of $3.8 billion PER YEAR to Israel. This 10-year agreement began in 2016. I do not want a renewal in 2026, and in the next election, I will vote for representatives who WILL NOT VOTE TO FUND ISRAEL. I will be keeping track of how you vote now, and I will not vote for you if you decide to fund Israel in any way.
I am a single-issue voter for this. I want you to defund Israel. I do not want a single dollar spent on supporting Israel. I will be paying attention to how you vote in the upcoming weeks and months, and if you vote to fund or provide weapons, troops, or intelligence to Israel, I will NOT vote for you in the next election.
We are paying attention to the budget. We know when you're giving aid to a country committing genocide instead of helping your constituents in the USA. Both myself and tens of thousands of other constituents have spent years saying that we don’t want our hard-earned taxpayer dollars going to Israel. The lack of willingness to fund anything for American citizens, but the quickness with which you take action for Israel is telling. It is unacceptable.
As an elected official, you have the opportunity to listen to the public and stand against genocide. Israel is currently committing war crimes against Palestine. You can stop this by defunding Israel. THOUSANDS of Palestinian people have been killed, 1/3 of them children, in just a couple of days. One child every 15 minutes is being killed. YOU can prevent this by refusing to send additional weapons and funding to Israel.
We are currently spending BILLIONS of dollars EVERY YEAR on Israel. I do not want my money going towards the ethnic cleansing and genocide of Palestinians. Not a dollar more.

Best crime and thrillers of 2023
Given this year’s headlines, it’s unsurprising that our appetite for cosy crime continues unabated, with the latest title in Richard Osman’s Thursday Murder Club series, The Last Devil to Die (Viking), topping the bestseller lists. Janice Hallett’s novels The Mysterious Case of the Alperton Angels, which also features a group of amateur crime-solvers, and The Christmas Appeal (both Viper) have proved phenomenally popular, too.
Hallett’s books, which are constructed as dossiers – transcripts, emails, WhatsApp messages and the like – are part of a growing trend of experimentation with form, ranging from Cara Hunter’s intricate Murder in the Family (HarperCollins), which is structured around the making of a cold case documentary, to Gareth Rubin’s tête-bêche The Turnglass (Simon & Schuster). Books that hark back to the golden age of crime, such as Tom Mead’s splendidly tricksy locked-room mystery Death and the Conjuror (Head of Zeus), are also on the rise. The late Christopher Fowler, author of the wonderful Bryant & May detective series, who often lamented the sacrifice of inventiveness and fun on the altar of realism, would surely have approved. Word Monkey (Doubleday), published posthumously, is his funny and moving memoir of a life spent writing popular fiction.
Notable debuts include Callum McSorley’s Glaswegian gangland thriller Squeaky Clean (Pushkin Vertigo); Jo Callaghan’s In the Blink of an Eye (Simon & Schuster), a police procedural with an AI detective; Scorched Grace by Margot Douaihy (Pushkin Vertigo), featuring queer punk nun investigator Sister Holiday; and the caustically funny Thirty Days of Darkness (Orenda) by Jenny Lund Madsen (translated from the Danish by Megan E Turney).
There have been welcome additions to series, including a third book, Case Sensitive (Zaffre), for AK Turner’s forensic investigator Cassie Raven, and a second, The Wheel of Doll (Pushkin Vertigo), for Jonathan Ames’s LA private eye Happy Doll, who is shaping up to be the perfect hardboiled 21st-century hero.
Other must-reads for fans of American crime fiction include Ozark Dogs (Headline) by Eli Cranor, a powerful story of feuding Arkansas families; SA Cosby’s Virginia-set police procedural All the Sinners Bleed (Headline); Megan Abbott’s nightmarish Beware the Woman (Virago); and Rebecca Makkai’s foray into very dark academia, I Have Some Questions for You (Fleet). There are shades of James Ellroy in Jordan Harper’s Hollywood-set tour de force Everybody Knows (Faber), while Raymond Chandler’s hero Philip Marlowe gets a timely do-over from Scottish crime doyenne Denise Mina in The Second Murderer (Harvill Secker).
As Mick Herron observed in his Slow Horses origin novel, The Secret Hours (Baskerville), there’s a long list of spy novelists who have been pegged as the heir to John le Carré. Herron must be in pole position for principal legatee, but it’s been a good year for espionage generally: standout novels include Matthew Richardson’s The Scarlet Papers (Michael Joseph), John Lawton’s Moscow Exile (Grove Press) and Harriet Crawley’s The Translator (Bitter Lemon).
Historical crime has also been well served. Highlights include Emma Flint’s excellent Other Women (Picador), based on a real 1924 murder case; Laura Shepherd-Robinson’s story of a fortune teller’s quest for identity in Georgian high society, The Square of Sevens (Mantle); and SG MacLean’s tale of Restoration revenge and retribution, The Winter List (Quercus). There are echoes of Chester Himes in Viper’s Dream (No Exit) by Jake Lamar, which begins in 1930s Harlem, while Palace of Shadows (Mantle) by Ray Celestin, set in the late 19th century, takes the true story of American weapons heiress Sarah Winchester’s San Jose mansion and transports it to Yorkshire, with chillingly gothic results.
The latest novel in Vaseem Khan’s postcolonial India series, Death of a Lesser God (Hodder), is also well worth the read, as are Deepti Kapoor’s present-day organised crime saga Age of Vice (Fleet) and Parini Shroff’s darkly antic feminist revenge drama The Bandit Queens (Atlantic).
While psychological thrillers are thinner on the ground than in previous years, the quality remains high, with Liz Nugent’s complex and heartbreaking tale of abuse, Strange Sally Diamond (Penguin Sandycove), and Sarah Hilary’s disturbing portrait of a family in freefall, Black Thorn (Macmillan), being two of the best.
Penguin Modern Classics has revived its crime series, complete with iconic green livery, with works by Georges Simenon, Dorothy B Hughes and Ross MacDonald. There have been reissues by other publishers, too – forgotten gems including Celia Fremlin’s 1959 holiday‑from-hell novel, Uncle Paul (Faber), and Richard Wright’s The Man Who Lived Underground (Vintage). Finished in 1942 but only now published in its entirety, the latter is an account of an innocent man who takes refuge from racist police officers in the sewers of Chicago – part allegorical, part brutally realistic and, unfortunately, wholly topical.

The left-wing (mainly bearded) men who harangue, vilify or threaten women for the new heresy — that biological sex is real, immutable and meaningful to our lives — claim to be the real feminists. Whereas the women they violently detest — especially the high coven who supped with Goody Rowling — are rebranded bigots, Terfs, Karens, prudish pearl-clutchers, suburban wine moms, killjoys waiting to die.

JANICE TURNER
Vibes beat facts for Meghan the influencer
The duchess knows that American viewers will fall for the faux-spontaneity and curated candour at which she excels
Janice Turner
Friday December 09 2022, 9.00pm
In a downpour outside the Hilton Midtown on 54th Street, I argue with a Meghan superfan. The duchess is “courageous”, she tells me, a “humanitarian” who brought vaccines to poorer nations, balm to Uvalde in Texas after its high school massacre. While I, part of the racist British media which drove her out, should be ashamed.
Waiting for the Sussexes to arrive at the Ripple of Hope dinner, to accept a prize for “moral courage”, I try to convince this African-American lady that the British people — reflected in the press — overwhelmingly welcomed Meghan as a refreshing, modern addition to public life. “I read your newspapers,” she says. But I live in my country, I protest, to no avail.
Finally, the blacked-out SUV pulls up and the small, damp crowd surges forward, phones raised, to catch a grim-faced prince and his tiny, beatific, white-clad wife. Amid American cries of, “We love you Meghan!”, from nowhere a British man booms: “Harry, how does it feel to destroy the royal family?”
After the Netflix series, this is a voice in the wilderness, at least beyond Britain. The Palace, and indeed journalists, can pinpoint inaccuracies: it was untrue that Netflix asked the royals for comment, that footage “proving” Meghan’s press harassment came from Katie Price’s trial and a Harry Potter premiere. Or that UK media racism boils down to three exhibits, repeatedly flashed up on screen: Rachel Johnson’s crass use of “exotic DNA” in a largely pro-Meghan piece, an ugly “straight outta Compton” headline and the phrase “niggling doubts” which Americans think originates in the N-word, but whose etymology is Viking Danish.
But facts, as I found in New York, are like taking a knife to a gunfight. Modern media battles are won with “vibes”, and in this theatre of war Meghan is a five-star general. An “influencer” long before she was royal, she parlayed, via her blog The Tig, a meh acting talent on a second-rate series, Suits, into a business, a platform to speak for fashionable causes and endless free stuff. Now her mastery of that cutesy, Instagram faux-spontaneity and curated candour fills her Netflix series: her vibe-bombs strafe the royal family as they load their muskets with facts.
Watching Harry & Meghan I reflected that there are two types of celebrities who detest the press. The first wish only to do their work while remaining utterly private: they pull on baseball caps, build security walls, resent publicity obligations, are livid when scandal pulls them into the news. Among them are Hugh Grant and noted recluses like JD Salinger.
Then there are celebrities who hate the press because it does not say exactly what they want: it snaps them rolling drunk, points out shortfalls between lofty views and personal deeds; it takes the piss. Mistaking journalists for PRs, they crave maximum exposure with minimum scrutiny. This camp includes Steve Coogan and much of Hollywood.
The trouble is that Harry belongs to the former but Meghan the latter. No one has greater reason to hate photographers than a prince raised in the gaze of a gazillion lenses, who as a bereaved child — as Netflix poignantly shows — had to greet weeping strangers on TV. His natural instinct was always to flee: he sought anonymity in the open vistas of Botswana and later in the ranks of the military.
Meghan played on his visceral loathing of the press to lure him to California: he speaks of “M” relinquishing her world to enter his, then “pretty soon after that” giving up his world for hers. But for Harry this was no escape. More even than she hated the press, Meghan fumed at Palace protocols which fed the media photographs of her children.
She has a point: watching wriggling Prince Louis at the diamond jubilee rendered the notion of “royal child” archaic and cruel. But Meghan’s instinct was not to safeguard her kids’ privacy but monetise it herself. On Netflix we see their faces and intimate moments, like baby Lilibet beside a photograph of “Granny Diana”.
But then Meghan is always performative: constantly triangulating how a party, an African bush sunset, a post-coital pillow pic will play in the world beyond. An influencer can’t stop influencing. Even when Harry in the next room is arranging candles and preparing to propose, she’s filming it on her phone for a friend: “Oh my God, he’s really doing it!”
Meanwhile Harry never looks at ease. “Yes, I’m nervous,” he snaps before a red carpet gala, while a gowned Meghan bathes in attention. His video diaries are awkward, cursory. Hers are pitch-perfect: the scrubbed face, the artful tear. When a laughing Meghan performs the lavish curtsy with which she supposedly first greeted the Queen, his face clouds with distaste. He chose her — Wendy to his Lost Boy — but not her version of public life.
Most egregious and distasteful is the deployment of slavery, Windrush, colonialism, even the murder of Stephen Lawrence, to justify their lifestyle decisions, to purge a prince of privilege, to render them saintly, beyond all reproach. Historic injustices are emptied of horror and meaning, to become swatches on their mood board.
Meghan can’t even get her story straight: she says race was never a factor in her life until she came to Britain, yet also that her character in Suits, which her agent believed her too white to play — “I thought she was a freckled, sun-kissed Californian girl” — was a biracial groundbreaker.
But what’s truth? It’s enough that a cycle of allegations and rebuttals have become a self-perpetuating publicity machine, pitching Brit against American, widening racial divisions which Meghan was once so perfectly placed to bridge. For now at least, the Sussexes burn hard and bright, on that high-octane fuel of vibe.

all told i've read a total of 48 books this year, which is way more than i thought i'd read when i was going through my list. technically it's probably closer to 40 because some of the books are DNFs or books i'm still trying to finish - but nonetheless i think i had a pretty varied and rewarding reading experience this year! the list for next year is everything i didn't read on this year's list, plus like two small steno pages of books i've written down since then - about 220 books. i'll probably add even more as the year goes on.

Speaking to Sky News, he (Iain Anderson) said "We need to lower the temperature on all sides of this wherever you sit on this." That is classic abuser deflection. To not fully admit to any problems on their end but to try to make it a "we" problem.
The new boss of controversial charity Stonewall has failed to condemn the abuse aimed at the Harry Potter author in a Sky News interview dubbed a 'masterclass in obfuscation'.
Stonewall's new boss has failed to turn over a new leaf in a "car crash" interview where he was confronted with the abuse from trans activists aimed at JK Rowling.
Iain Anderson has recently been announced as the new Chair of Trustees for the charity at the heart of the gender controversy. Stonewall, once regarded as the front line for gay right causes has become embroiled in the bitter divide over transgender rights and women's rights.
Speaking to Sky News, he was confronted with the vitriol and ongoing abuse hurled at prominent gender critic and women's rights advocate Rowling and others who have lost jobs because of their views. Criticised for not taking the chance to condemn the abuse, he called on those on either side of heated debate to “lower the temperature”.
Many slammed his appearance, calling him out for failing to directly answer questions on trans women's inclusion in sports but he hinted at a shift from previous hardline stances that saw the charity heavily lambasted when he claimed he supports exemptions that can be used to exclude transgender people from women's prisons and toilets. He did, however, not go into detail.
Tumblr media
He said: "We need to lower the temperature on all sides of this wherever you sit on this.
"We need a strategy for [discussing trans rights] as opposed to megaphone diplomacy. That's what I really hope for, that's what I hope we can do in the months ahead and maybe through the election period ahead.
"I want us all to have a respectful conversation but the thing for me is I want my community to be able to fulfil the opportunities that are available to it. That's the thing that guides me in all of this."
Journalist Victoria Smith did not take kindly to his statement. She said: "Like an abusive husband telling the world he's decided to be magnanimous towards his 'troubled, difficult' wife in the hope they can 'work things out'"
Columnist Janice Turner: "This @BethRigby interview with @iain_w_anderson is a car crash. He simply will not answer a single question. A masterclass in obfuscation."
James Esses, a child rights campaigner said: "It is beyond parody that Stonewall Chair has told people to 'lower the temperature' on the trans debate. Stonewall have been stoking the flames of this fire for years now and are responsible for pushing an ideology that endangers children and women."
On the topic of banning biological males from female single-sex spaces, Mr Anderson said:"There are protections that are in place. Those protections were put in place for a very, very good reason.
"I do support these protections, absolutely. The question is, do we need to look at the legislation that's currently in place? Does it work? I think it does work."
This is a shift in Stonewall's previous stance on the issue. In 2015, the charity wrote to parliament's women and equalities select committee seeking a review of the Equality Act 2010 to "remove exemptions, such as access to single-sex spaces".

TORI ANDERSON, CORBIN BLEU, JEFFREY BOWYER-CHAPMAN STAR IN ‘CAMPFIRE CHRISTMAS,’ A NEW, ORIGINAL MOVIE PREMIERING JULY 16, ON HALLMARK CHANNEL
Caitlin Stryker, Matt Hamilton and Alec Santos Also Star
Part of the Network’s Annual “Christmas in July” Programming Event
STUDIO CITY, CA – June 24, 2022 – Tori Anderson (“NCIS: Hawai’i,” “Love Under the Olive Tree”), Corbin Bleu (“Love, for Real,” “High School Musical”), Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman (“Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.,” “UnREAL”), Caitlyn Stryker (“Sealed with a Kiss: Wedding March 6,” “A Million Little Things”), Matt Hamilton (“Turner & Hooch,” “North to Home”) and Alec Santos (“Rise and Shine, Benedict Stone,” “Virgin River”) reunite at the camp where they first met in “Campfire Christmas,” a new, original movie premiering Saturday, July 16 (8 p.m. ET/PT), on Hallmark Channel as part of the network’s annual “Christmas in July” programming event.
Peyton’s (Anderson) parents decide it’s time for them to retire and will be selling the summer camp they run where so many memories have been made. But first, they host one final Christmas in July celebration that was a beloved camp tradition, for all their alumni and their families. Peyton is thrilled to reunite with friends Beckett (Bowyer-Chapman), now a Broadway star; now-married camp sweethearts Janice (Stryker) and Dave (Hamilton) and Chris (Santos). But she’s much less excited to see Thomas (Bleu), her former boyfriend who broke her heart when he ended their romance after high school. As the friends spend time together during traditional outdoor camp activities, crafts and Christmas pageant rehearsals, they reconnect and reminisce. Peyton, Thomas, Beckett, Janice, Dave and Chris help each other take stock of where they are in their lives and gain insight into what paths they want to take next as they start on their own happily- ever-afters.
“Campfire Christmas” is from Muse Entertainment. Jesse Prupas is executive producer. Oneida Crawford serves as associate producer and Allen Lewis is supervising producer. Charles Cooper is producer. David I. Strasser directed from a script by Anna White.
