Turn Me On, Goddammit!
Få meg på, for faen! (Turn Me On, Goddammit!) (Jannicke Systad Jacobsen, 2011)
This movie is just fine. Didn’t blow my mind, but it was well-made from every angle. I forget how I heard about this film. It was either mentioned in an article I was reading or a compelling still from it crossed my path somewhere on the internet. I found the title* intriguing but I probably would not have watched it if a dude had directed it. I tend to be suspicious of dudebros telling stories of the sexual awakenings of young women/girls. But I tend to want to hear it any time a woman tells a story about a woman or girl’s experience.
I remember when Broad City was first on the air, I read an article that talked about how many comedies there are about dudes in their teens and twenties who are adrift and stoned and horny and how that is presented as funny and charming and cool, but girls and women aren’t granted the same room to be like that. Women are supposed to be serious and sober and sexy but unhorny and have their shit together. And the writer was applauding Broad City for giving women a space to be the way that Abbi and Ilana are. It was an awesome article and I agreed with the points it made.
But anyway, this movie is about a 15-year-old (I think that’s her age) girl living in a small, rural town in Norway (and rural in Norway don’t fuck around - the outdoor shots in this film are amazing). She deals with bullying and social ostracization in her friend group and school, and that stuff is handled realistically and with depth. But the main thing that I love about this movie is that this girl is unapologetically horny. I feel like we (as in American film and television viewers) don’t bat an eye when presented with a boy or young man whose entire being and consciousness (and surrounding feature film or TV series) are focused on gaining sexual access to any girl or young woman who will grant it. These stories are usually crass and just objectify the hell out of some women. But with a film like this, which superficially simply flips things and tells the story of a horny girl, it’s made clear (at least it seems clear to me) just how different and not-equal these stories of sexually frustrated boys and sexually frustrated girls are.
Alma has a crush on a certain boy, but also has a larger and sort of non-specified desire to fuck somebody. She runs up the phone bill talking to a guy on a phone-sex line. She frequently gets lost in sexual fantasies and comes to to somebody yelling at her to get her attention. These are all things that a dude in a dude movie would do, but they never feel like Zack Morris or American Pie or Woody Allen here. They feel personal and serious and never like she’s viewing an entire gender of people as interchangeable or consumable or disposable. And when I say she’s unapologetically horny, I mean that when her mom confronts her about the phone bill, she says she called a phone sex line because she’s horny. And when her mom is mortified by the directness of that response, Alma refuses to soften her language or deny her desires. This movie feels personal and idiosyncratic. Maybe that’s another difference. Horny guy movies tend to coast on the idea that EVERY guy is this way, but whenever I watch a movie that explores a woman’s sexuality, it feels like it’s just her story and isn’t trying to speak for anyone else. Which is actually a way of way more successfully and honestly being universal.
*Sometimes the “God” is dropped from the English version of the title, but I’ve seen both and definitely prefer “Goddammit” to “Dammit”.

*banned film rec list*
These are not banned films. This is just a list of all MY posts which were either taken down by Tumblr, or that I took down to prevent them spamming my inbox. Basically, so I can tell that if any of my posts are flagged, it means they were flagged incorrectly. (I would like to note that the only posts flagged were ones containing female breasts and that I truly disagree that screenshots of women who consented to being filmed topless in movies which were released in theatres need be banished from my blog. I just thought the cinematography was nice.) So this is a rec list of all the posts that are no longer visible. Many are great films that I adore. If watching a bunch of movies that happen to contain at least one well-framed shot of nudity is your thing, this is a rec list for you. It’s also for me to remember.
