Animal of the Day!
Titanis (Titanis walleri)
Tumblr media
(Photo from Florida Museum of Natural History)
Conservation Status- Extinct
Habitat- North America
Estimated Size (Weight/Length)- 150 kg; 2 m tall
Diet- Mammals
Time Period- Pliocene; Early Pleistocene
Cool Facts- Titanis was one of the larger terror birds that stalked the plains of North America for thousands of years. Incapable of flight, Titanis most likely relied on its long legs to outrun its prey. While a skull has never been found, it is assumed that Titanis had the massive, ax-like beak other terror birds of the time period had, leading to interpretations of what its complete skeleton may look like. Due to having excellent movement in their neck, it is believed that Titanis would chase down its prey and batter the animal to death with its massive beak. Titanis most likely went extinct due to competition from new predators, especially bears and big cats.
Rating- 11/10 (Could outrun a horse.)

Today Lithuania marks Freedom Defenders' Day to commemorate the 14 victims that lost their lives during Soviet aggression on January 13, 1991.
Fourteen civilians (some underaged and one woman) were killed and hundreds more were wounded when the Soviet troops stormed the TV Tower and the Radio and Television Committee building in Vilnius, the offices of present-day LRT, in the early hours of January 13, 1991.
The Soviet Union used military force in an attempt to overthrow the government of Lithuania, which declared independence on March 11, 1990.
Today we remember our heroes and stand united for the freedom and victory of Ukraine.
Russia was the same then as it is now, and if they're not stopped, there will be another January 13th and another Ukraine.

Today's flower is foxglove, or Digitalis Purpurea
Tumblr media
It is native and widely spread in the temperate areas of europe, and has also naturalised to north america and other temperate regions.
Its leaves, flowers and seeds are all poisonous to humans and some animals and can be fatal if ingested.
Symptoms of Digitalis poisoning include a low pulse rate, nausea, vomiting, and uncoordinated contractions of different parts of the heart, leading to cardiac arrest and finally death.
Foxglove symbolises ambition for someone. It is also associated with folklores about fairies

Prompt 13 - Wet
@jegulus-microfic January 13 Word count 439
It was relentlessly pouring down outside. The worst rain they’d had all year. No one was outside. Most had the sense to stay indoors until the downpour stopped. James Potter, however, was soaking wet through.
He had forgotten his keys yet again. When he’d walked the short distance from the bus stop, he discovered that his keys were not in their usual pocket or any of the other pockets on James’s person or in his bag. He’d decided to wait for his husband to return home. It’s only half an hour, he told himself as he settled onto the front step to wait. Five minutes later, the heavens opened.
So, that’s where we find James now, his clothes so waterlogged he’ll be surprised if he can stand they’re so heavy. His usually messy black hair is plastered flat to his head. He keeps needing to push his fringe back to stop it from dripping into his eyes.
Exactly 25 minutes later, a sleek black car pulls into the driveway. It idles for a minute until it’s turned off, the purr of the engine drowned out by the rain.
The front driver’s door opens a crack, allowing a long black umbrella to emerge from the dark interior. The umbrella burst open, obscuring the entire door before being carefully tilted upwards. One foot connected with the brick paving, then the other, smoothly followed by their owner.
Regulus stood, completely protected from the rain by his umbrella, staring down at the sopping man he called husband squashed up on the doorstep, trying futilely to find some small amount of shelter.
James looked up at him, squinting through his water-spotted glasses. To James, he looked like a dark angel, here to rescue him.
“Forget your keys again, did you, my love?” Regulus asked, a crooked smile playing in the corner of his mouth.
“Heh, heh, yeah,” James said sheepishly, pushing his fringe out of his eyes again.
Regulus sighed and moved around James to open the door. The rain had let up a bit, so he made James stand outside while he went to get some towels. He laid one inside the door and instructed James to stand on it and strip. James did so with a giant smile on his face.
“I’m going for a shower.” He said once he was fully de-clothed. Regulus nodded, trying very hard not to look down.
“Fine, I’m going to have a cup of tea.” He twirled around and disappeared into the kitchen as James plodded up the stairs, leaving a trail of wet drops on the carpet where he hadn’t quite dried himself off properly.
