Shadow Knight, and the Magical Girls IV
Chapter Four
Jaune was naked he realized. He also didn't know where he was. Only that he had a very thin sheet covering his remaining decency. This was not a first, however.
Waking up in a unknown location that is. He had made a habit of not dying, and that happened to lead him to going around in a fugue of blood-lost a lot times, collapsing, waking up, and getting back to it.
Waking up in somebody's house? That was new. Nobody had brought him home before.
He paused.
Phrasing.
Nobody had taken his unconscious body into they're house, and stripped him naked before.
He paused.
Phrasing.
He was not making this sound better.
Alright, he got it, nobody had stitched him up this good before, he hardly even noticed them, it was nice.
Still, he looked around for his clothes.
And, more importantly, his gear. He couldn't get back out there empty handed, he had tried that before, and it did not work well.
Getting off the table, he wore the sheet like a robe, not that it covered much, in fact, he felt more indecent wearing the sheer material over his body than if he were to walk around naked.
Standing up, he did check up and once over, finding a mirror against the wall, examining his status.
Well, he wasn't going to win Mr. Vale this year, it seems. Or any year, but at least his face was mostly untouched, other than a couple bruises from the explosion.
Explosion? Oh, yeah. That did happen, wow, that was crazy. How did that happen, was it a gas leak or...
Those Girls, with they're powers? Those Magical Girls. Why did they blow up a freaking street?
Were they insane?
Jaune thought about that, and nodded.
So, beside Shadow-Monsters that live underground, there were also super-powered crazy girls flying around at night.
He felt he could safely rule out this being a Government experiment now, and felt he could safely move to alien invasion next.
And, if this is an alien invasion, they're doing a terrible job.
Just release a dna-altering virus and be done with it.
Maybe, just maybe, just because Aliens discovered FTL travel didn't make them anymore intelligent than them, it could easily be like a dog falling into the drivers seat and accidentally starting the car.
Jaune shook his shaggy hair, enough musing, he decided. He needed to leave, he had no idea how long he was out for, but he needed to get back out there, the longer he waited, the more people would suffer.
"Holy-, Amber! He actually woke up! We didn't kill him!" A voice spoke then paused, and Jaune felt himself being looked at. "Oh! Also, he's gorgeous when he's not bleeding out!" A unfamiliar voice-, no wait, he heard it briefly earlier, spoke from behind him.
Turning around, he saw her, a woman of average height and build, coming out of the bathroom. Her hair short and close-cropped, with a brown-black hair, and large, pale blue eyes who looked at him curiously.
She dressed loosely, wearing blue hot-pants, and a white tank-top, revealing she had a sleeve of tattoos on either arms. She smiled at him, and Jaune felt a sense of danger from her, as he took her measure, noticing while she was average height and build, she was tightly muscled and lean.
Like a fighter.
"Hey, ease up, tiger." She called out nonchalantly. "I don't bite, not unless you ask nicely." She teased him.
Jaune took a step back, whole body tensing up, he did not like this. He was at the disadvantage here.
"Who are you?" Jaune asked bluntly, feeling the world narrow on to her, studying her like a frog on the lab table, looking at her stance, breathing rate, eye dilation, and a hundred other little things that might suggest that she was dangerous.
"Gee," She blushed. "Don't go looking at me like your about to eat me up," She paused and looked away. "Vernal, Vernal Mayday." Something clicked in her head. "Wait, you're legal right? I mean you're built like a statue, but you look kind of young, oh shit, you're not. I've been coming onto a minor."
"I'm 17," Jaune admitted. "So, yeah. I'd appreciate it if you would stop."
"Yeah, I'll get back to you in like year, cool?" She said weakly. "Unless...?"
"No. Uh, no. Sorry. I kind of have a whole, wait, I don't need to explain myself." Jaune said half to Vernal, and half to himself. "So, how'd I get here, and where is my stuff."
Vernal opened her mouth to explain, but turned her head seeing something. "I'll let amber explain. So, sit down for a second, it won't kill you."
Jaune sighed, doing as he was told. "Could I have my pants back?"
Vernal gave a awkward smile. "Sorry, uh, we kind of cut them off of you to get you fixed up."
"Oh." Jaune said sadly. "Thanks. So, it was you that fixed me up?"
She nods, taking a seat across from him, holding a cup of coffee. "Amber and I, speaking of which-"
Jaune saw a door open, and a pretty brown-skinned girl make her way towards him in a way that he found reminiscent of his older sisters. "Thanks the Brothers!" Then she wrapped her arms around his neck. "We thought you weren't going to make it a couple times last night!"
Jaune hadn't been hugged in a long-time, not since he had started making it his life's work to fight against the Shadow Monsters. He had put up barriers between himself and everyone, family included.
It might have been selfish to isolate himself, but if he died out there, he didn't want anybody to be sad when it happens.
So, he felt very surprised to be hugged by a pretty girl he hardly knew.
He opted to pat her bat half-heartedly.
Then he looked at the clock. It was morning, if barely.
Well, the Shadow-Monsters would be retreating now anyway, so he didn't have anywhere to be yet.
Then she pulled back. "First off, thank you. Second off, what the hell was all that last night?!" She asked grabbing his shoulders.
"Yeah, Amb's was up in arms about giant scorpions or something, and then you show up, Mr. Knight. I've heard about you, uh, that's why I hit on you, I thought you were a bit older... Anyway, whats up with your one man-crusade." Vernal looked at him from behind her coffee.
Jaune gulped. Then he sighed. Then he looked them both in eyes one after the other.
"I'll do my best, but first, I need something to eat." His stomach backed his claim with a growl. "Second, I'd like some pants." Amber took a look down at his barely-covered body and blushed, backing away slowly. "Third and finally, I don't have all the answers myself, so if I miss something, it's not because I not telling you, it's because I don't know. So, are you sure you want to know? Something knowing the truth is scarier than knowing nothing at all."
Amber looked to Vernal, who looked back with a nod.
"I want to know."
"Same."
Jaune took in a breath, clearing his lungs. "Well, it started last year, in the my sophomore year of high-school,-

Ruby waited in front of the school as the sun rose. She let out a yawn that wouldn't be out of place on a puppy, and stun-locked anybody who might have seen it out of cuteness.
She never got up this early! School didn't start till 9am, so most days she slept until 8:50 and then rushed to school! But, today was different, today was the first day of the rest of her life with Jaune!
Ruby blushed.
Phrasing.
As Best Friends Forever, that is, and totally wasn't waiting on him because, she didn't have his number, and wanted to ask him to be her bodyguard this afternoon, so she could pick up almost-illegal smut.
She definitely wasn't doing that.
"Morning, Ruby." Came a kind voice, that nearly made her jump out of her skin.
Coming up jogging next to her was her other BFF, Pyrrha, who glistened with a sheen of sweat, that drew attention showing off her toned, flat stomach, as she was currently in her jogging outfit, which consisted of a deep-red sports bra and athletic shorts.
Many boys, and girls, had dared waking up before school to catch a glimpse of her in the state, though none actually had the courage to go talk to her.
Nobody wanted to get on the bad side of the champion of Mistral Junior Historical Martial Tournament, 4 years running, and idol in her own right, Pyrrha Nikos.
Ruby clutched her chest. "You half-scared me to death!"
Pyrrha giggled. "I'm sorry. Anyway, what are you doing here so early? Did you forget something? School doesn't open for another hour, you know?"
Ruby's eye drifted away. "Uh, you know, just waiting to get some good ol' education! Can't wait for school!"
Pyrrha raised a eyebrow. "Is that so, Ruby? In that case, I can quiz you over yesterdays classes while we go on a short 10k jog."
Ruby paled. "I'm good!"
"So, what are you really here for?"
Ruby shyly looked at the ground. "Jaune."
"Really?" She looks around. "Where is he?"
"Not here."
"What time does he get here?"
"I don't know." Ruby pouted. "I don't even know where he lives! Nobody would tell me!"
"Who did you ask?"
"Yang, Weiss, Blake, Myself, CCT..."
"I'm sorry, I don't know either."
"Not that you could find that out just, by asking around," Came a strict voice that made both stand ram-rod straight. "The Arc's are notoriously private, and live on the edge of town." Ms. Goodwitch, the disciplinary of Beacon and Deputy Head-Mistress.
At least in public spheres, beyond that, she was also a master of supernatural art of Aura, and lead trainer for the current generation of the defenders of Light.
Also known as, Magical Girls.
"They're also know for being trigger happy, so don't go intruding on they're compound." The Head-Mistress added idly.
"You mean house, right?" Pyrrha asked weakly.
Ms. Goodwitch fixed her glasses. "No, no, I don't. Though," She looked at the two girls. "You two shouldn't worry about that." They're was a certain glimmer in her eyes.
"That said, why the interest in Mr. Arc, Miss Rose? Has he acted in a manner untoward to you? If you desire it, I could have him expelled by this afternoon."
"No! He's great!" Ruby said in a panic.
"Yes, he's been nothing, but a gentleman to her," Pyrrha added hastily.
"I merely was joking, Mr. Arc isn't a bad boy despite his image. It's good to know he's finally reconnecting to people, again. That said, you won't find him this early, he's made a bad habit of arriving just as the bell rings, the sheer about of tardys he should have would have gotten anyone else expelled, if not for the cowardice of the teachers at this academy. I wouldn't expect to see him at earliest for an hour or more."
Ruby dropped to her knees in sorrow. "That means," She pauses. "I got early for no reason!"
Ms. Goodwitch smiled at her, but there was certain evil to it that made Ruby shiver. "I wouldn't say that, in fact that means we have time to train away any," She pause with a grin. "Any flaws in your 'skills' miss Rose."
Pyrrha gave her a sympathetic smile.
"And, you too, of course Ms. Nikos." The teacher turned to her with a smile.
Pyrrha smiles falsely, shuttering internally.
"Though, I'd like to ask a favor, though. When you find Mr. Arc, direct him to me, I need to have a conversation with him."
"Really? About what?" Ruby asks.
"His grades, Ms. Rose. They have slipped well below Beacon's standards, and we need to address this, or he will have to leave the school." "What!? Oh man," She turned to Pyrrha. "What do we do, Pyrrha? We're going to lose our new BFF!"
Pyrrha kept up her fake smile. "It's fine Ruby, we can help him out, and soon enough, it won't be a problem." Though she was calm, Pyrrha also felt worry. Jaune was the first excitement she had felt in her civilian life in years, losing him would be terrible.
Ms. Goodwitch gave them a pleasant smile. "I am proud to see the camaraderie in between you two and your fellow students, hopefully this will be a good influence on your fellows." Then a faint purple glow surrounded the two girls, forcing them to walk forward. "Now, lets us get some training done with the time we have."
Internally Pyrrha and Ruby screamed.
----
At some point during his story, Jaune had acquire a fluffy pink bathrobe and some athletic shorts that one of Amber's previous boyfriends had forgotten.
He hadn't bothered to tie the robe shut, leaving his scarred and muscular chest out to the air, if one looked to the side, they could see stitches going up his sides and the angry red-pink flesh under it.
In front of him was a empty plate covered in grease stains, and another, and another. He was a monster, he had eaten everything in they're refrigerator over the course of his story, it was horrifying, and not a speck on him.
Still, Vernal had to admit, it was a attractive quality in a way, a strong body needed a lot of fuel, it just another way of showing strength. Still, he was buying them grocery's.
"Monsters are real. I go out at night and fight them, also they're some sort of gang of super-powered girls blowing up things. I have no idea why, and they're probably a conspiracy to prevent this knowledge from getting out, as no information exist on these things. The End." Jaune finished, summing up his tale.
"Wow, that's crazy." Vernal added.
"Yes. It's also true."
Amber was staring into her coffee. "So, huh, yeah. I don't really have a response for all that."
"Don't need one." Jaune drained a glass of water. "You have the knowledge now, it's up to you how your use it. You saw it with your own eyes, it's up to you to do ignore it, or seek it."
Jaune looked at the time. He was late for school. He shrugged, not like he actually accomplished anything there, maybe it was time to drop out? Not like he was going to graduate, much less, make it through the year.
It wouldn't hurt for him to skip a day, he had done so before after particularly bad hunts. But, he probably should get home, but how was he going to bring his tools back with him, his clothes were shredded?
Jaune sighed. He needed more caches.
"Alright, I'm in." Amber said suddenly.
"What?" Jaune said with all the warmth of the hadal zone. "Excuse me, but I wasn't making a recruitment pitch. I was just giving you answers, to make sure you're careful, not to come and help me."
Amber frowned. "I wasn't asking."
Vernal raised her mug. "Me too, then."
Jaune looked at them bewildered. "I tell you monsters are real, and your first response is, 'I'm in?' What's wrong with you, two?"
Vernal grinned. "Same thing as you, I suppose."
"You can't expect to tell people to do as I say, not as I do, can you?" Amber added. "Look, I'm not saying I want to go out and be a street-warrior like you, but you clearly need help, you're in over your head, and the fact you're alive is a miracle that only the Brothers could make happen."
Jaune had no response for that.
"I'm saying, we're going to help you from now, we can't have The Shadow Knight going around dying from blood lost, can we?" Amber continued.
"Fair point. Also, please don't tell anyone, I don't want to get locked up." Or break out of jail, Jaune thought.
"No problem, and I don't think most people are eager to find-out that they're vigilante hero is a teenager." Vernal added.
Jaune leaned back in his seat, and got up. "I guess, I should get going, I'll be back for my stuff later. I'll bring over some notes later, maybe you two can figure out something I haven't."
"What do you mean, leaving? You are need rest." Amber said firmly.
Jaune looked at the clock. "Un, I have school?" He lied about his intentions.
Amber handed him a slip of paper. "Now you don't, you have a doctor's note, now go sleep on that couch."
Jaune nodded meekly, and within minutes he was in a deep, dreamless sleep.
Vernal and Amber watched him sleep for a moment.
"So, we're helping him now?" Vernal ventured, not against the idea.
"Yep," Amber added. "I mean, think about it, Vern. We can't get clearer sign then this. For so long, we've tried to get out of the 'life', and now a bonafided hero drops in our laps, if that not a sign, I don't know what is." Amber bit her lip. "But, I do know, if we want to be better people, we gotta help him."
Vernal laughter. "A underground doctor for the Xiong family, and A ex Branwen tattoo artist want to be the good guys now? Well, sure why not?" She grinned ruefully. "If we want to wipe our sins away, I don't see a better shot."
"Yeah, me, neither."
In his sleep, Jaune stirred, briefly, as though internally accepting they're pledges of loyalty. Not that he wanted that responsibility, not in any number of years.
His life was stressful enough, the idea of being responsible beyond what he already did was way too draining.
----
Ruby stormed over to the table. "He skipped school!" Ruby bellowed at her pals, who took her storming over in the same way one did to a toddler fighting them with a foam sword.
With barely held back giggles. Ruby was far too ... Ruby to be make anyone shake in fear.
"Is that so?" Weiss said with faux-curiosity. "Well, guess we won't be seeing much more of him then. It's obvious that he doesn't take school seriously enough to be worth our time."
Yang leaned back, shirt stressing against her ample chest. "In other words you can't stand him standing us up?"
"That is not what I said!" Weiss huffed. "Why not ask that fool's friends?" She jerked a thumb toward a solitary table with two pretty girls sitting by themselves, with only one doing any talking.
But to be fair, she was doing enough talking for ten, and the other was doing enough listening for any 3 letter agency.
Ruby paused. "He has friends?" She then corrected. "Besides me, you guys that is. Jaune is. My BFF. Your guys too, so that makes them my BFFS too, and-"
"Ruby." Blake said politely. "Turn your mouth off before you burn your brain out."
Ow. "I resemble that remark." Ruby said glumly. "Anyway, how'd you know that he friends before me?" Ruby looked at Weiss with narrowed eyes of suspicion.
Weiss casually pulled out a stack of documents. "Please, the Schnees have eyes everywhere."
"Expect to ethics." Blake added.
Weiss growled. "Not now, Blake."
"Or your father to what your mother gets up to in her spare time."
"Last warning." Blue flames briefly shot from the pale heiress's eyes.
Blake smirked and went back to reading.
Weiss, though, took that as a victory, and went back to haughtily presenting information to Ruby.
"Weiss ..." Ruby said quietly. "I think it's cool if you have a crush on Jaune, but stalking him isn't the right way to go about it." She looked at Weiss with eyes full of pity.
"I DO NOT HAVE A CRUSH ON JAUNE ARC!" Weiss bellowed, face red and breathing heavily.
"Classic tsundere." Blake said to Yang.
"I know right?" Yang nodded, turning to Ruby. "Poor girl is down bad." Her sister nodding along, with Ruby put a hand on her friend shoulder, and gave her a thumbs up. "You have my full support, bestie. Oh, this means you get to be my bestie in law and Jaune too!" She turned to look for him. "Congrats, Jaune! Oh right, he's not here." She then pouted.
"What do you think Pyrrha?" "Oh, me?" Pyrrha said looking up from her studying. "Hmm. I don't approve of stalking." Internally, she mused. 'She can have her turn when I'm done.'
The cafeteria was quiet in awe, Jaune Arc was barely above scum in the school, but internally they're respect for him grew three-sizes that day, for he pulled a Schnee.
To him they all thought, 'Mad respect, bro, mad respect.'
Weiss screamed and then stormed away in a flash of anger, no one questioned it, assuming it some-sort of Tsundere quirk.
"Poor girl, can't take her own feelings." Ruby said with pity. "Well, guess I'll go ask them about Jaune, maybe they can explain why he decided he wanted to be a dirty, selfish, skipper of school and classes, who is a meanie jerkface."
"Wow, Ruby. I didn't think you could be so foul-mouthed." Yang teased lightly.
"Well, that's just how I feel, ok?" Ruby pouted, once again not understanding sarcasm. "I'm sorry that got so caught up in my emtions."
"It's fine," Yang waved her off, and standing up. "Lets go fine out what his friends know."
The remaining girls then walked over to the ginger and raven haired girls.
"So, that's why I think Spruce Trellis is a alien from the planet hidden from us by the Authority." Ginger girl said with utter confidence.
The black-haired girl merely nodded, then turned to them. "Hello, what do you need?" She added bluntly.
"I didn't do it." The ginger added.
"We haven't even asked anything, yet." Yang said.
"You got nothing, and you will never have nothin." The ginger continued, then leaned back, crossing her arms.
"My apologies for her behavior." The black-haired one said. "Can we help you?"
Ruby put her hands on the table. "Where is Jaune Arc?" She said bluntly.
The red-head picked up a butter-knife, waving it threatening it dangerously at Ruby. "You got nothing on us! He didn't do it! I have his alibi, He's a gentle soul! I trust him with my life, I'd have his baby's if Ren wasn't here! Jaune would never kill anybody who didn't deserve it! That's it!" She jumped on the table. "They're on to him, Ren! We got to protect him!" She then tried to jump at the girls, only for the other girl to grab her by the shirt and put her back down on the seats.
Ren shrugged, passing off that moment of insanity as if nothing had happened. "My apologies, but we haven't seen Jaune today, is something the matter?" Ren asked politely, but all the girls felt they're blood-chill under her gaze.
Ruby took a step back, fighting the urge to use her aura on them. "N-no, it's just he's my new bff, and I'm worried about him when he didn't show up today."
"Oh." Ren said simply. "Good. In that case, he's probably not feeling well today, he's been working a night-job recently, and from what he's told me, it's very exhausting."
"You're Jaune's friend!" She turned to Ren. "He's allowed to be making them on his own?" Ren shrugged. "Awesome! That's means your my friend too, now! I'm Nora, Nora Valkyrie, and this is my partner in crime, Lie Ren!"
"Just Ren, please."
The girls made introductions, quickly, before sitting down.
"So, Jaune has a job?" Pyrrha probed, her respect growing for him. "And, still comes to school? I thought his family lived on a compound, why does he need a job?"
Ren steepled they're fingers. "That's his business, not ours, but he's very skilled with his hands."
"That coming from ... first hand experience, eh-eh?" Yang joked.
Ren nodded. "Yes, he does beautiful work, and always left me satisfied."
"Oh, your close like that?" Yang leaned back, surprised.
Nora nodded furiously. "Oh like you wouldn't believe! We've been tight forever, I know both of them so well, I could paint you a picture of them both naked blind-folded!"
The Magical Girls in Public Dress blush. 'Wow.'
"I didn't think he had relationships like that." Ruby muttered.
Yang blushed, looking away. "Maybe, we should talk about something else, now."
Blake leaned in with interest. "Go on."
"Um. Does he meet with you two often?" Pyrrha asked, trying to be discreet.
"Not as much as we used, too." Nora sighed. "But, it's always memorable when we do!" She then immediately brightened up.
"Jaune has a very busy life outside of school, so we make the most of our time here at school." Ren added.
"You mean, here?" Blake leaned forward.
"Yeah, we're joined at the hips here!" Nora exclaimed. "We're like buns in the oven of life!"
Ruby coughed, still red. "So, good to know. Think you can tell us some more stuff about Jaune, my, I mean our, bestest friend forever?"
Nora opened her mouth.
But, Ren covered it. "I'm afraid that you'll have to wait till Jaune is back," Ren gave a look at Nora. "Jaune should be the one to ..." He paused looking for the word. "To explain his quirks to his, I mean, our friends."
Nora nodded. "Right. Sorry, girls. Oh, but I could tell you about that time Jaune busted me out of Juvie!"
"That was a dream, Nora." Ren sighed.
"It was an awesome dream, Ren."
"Could you tell me anyway?" Ruby asked, eager to hear it.
Nora looked at her in surprise. "Really?" She searched Rubys face, then smiled, only to look nervously at the other girls. "You three wouldn't mind, would you? I've been told I talk too much, before."
Yang nodded. "Go for it, girl! I love a good story."
Blake shrugged, then put her book in her lap. "I don't mind a change of pace."
Pyrrha searched Nora's face. "Does Jaune listen to your dreams?"
Nora gave a mega-watt grin. "Oh, like you wouldn't believe, he even askes question! I mean," She looked shy for a moment. "We met in middle-school, and I had been talking non-stop about my dreams, and Ren hadn't been there to help, uh, what's the word, put a leash of me?"
More blushes.
"And, so meanies had told me to be quiet, which I get, but they didn't have to be jerks about it. And, all of a sudden this blonde boy I never met stands up and tells them, he wasn't done listening to me." She smiled in a far-off way. "He actually got into a fight for me, over it. That was the first time he had ever fought anybody, unlike his beefy-bod now, he was a 60lb twig, and got his butt handed to him."
That was a hard to picture in Ruby's head, despite only knowing Jaune for a short time, at least better now, it was hard for him to picture him losing. To anyone, actually. Even to her, or the other girls.
She shook her head, that was absurd, Jaune was strong, but he didn't even have Aura.
But, Ruby had to admit, he had a strength of will and character that made Aura seem so minor by comparison.
Nora laughed. "He didn't care though, just kept getting back up, telling the guy that I needed to be apologized too he's always been so stubborn.
"He was crying, nose-bleeding, eye completey black with bruises, and he just would not stay down, it got to the point where the other boy got so tired of him he couldn't move, and Jaune stood of over him.
"Imagine for a second, how scary that is, you're some big 12yr and beating the snot out of boy half your size. You feel great, high as heaven, and then he gets up.
"Your hands get heavy, your arms start to hurt, you can't breath right anymore. He stands up again, bleeding, bruised, but not beaten. Your hands ache from hitting so much, you trip, and he stands over you, dripping blood off his face, and his eyes stare into yours, just repeating the same phrase.
'Tell her you're sorry, tell her you're sorry, tell her you're sorry,' over and over again.'
"Anyway, he got so scared of Jaune, he wet himself and changed schools! It was great!" Nora cackled.
Ren nodded. "I wasn't there for it, but I came to the office as soon as I heard Nora had been called up there. Jaune was there holding her hand," Ren turned to her with a smirk. "You forgot to mention you were crying into his chest about how sorry you were forgetting him hurt, and that you'd be his best-friend forever, and then immediately saw me, and then, she told me, I was his best-friend forever, too." Ren sighed wistfully. "We've been inseparable ever since.
"Ren!" Nora whined. "Don't go making me look like cry-baby!"
"That's beautiful." Yang rubbed her eyes, her voice choking.
Blake and Pyrrha staring at her like she grew a second head.
"Excuse me," Yang said still rubbing her eyes. "Sorry, I don't want to get all soppy and weak. I just can't stop myself when I hear something like that." Ruby patted her sisters back.
Nora looked away. "It's cool. Glad you liked it..."
The table went silent.
"Would you mind if we started coming to set over her with you two girls, during lunch?" Pyrrha asked hesitantly.
Ren smiles. "No, not at all." He paused. "Wait, girls?"

i personally feel like jaune's armor is meant to serve a story purpose, not to be practical. his armor and weapon are hand-me-downs in his family, so it's supposed to look archaic in remnant's more sci-fi fantasy world. other male characters like ren or qrow don't wear armor as well. it doesn't deny that the female designs are sexualized, just that male characters wear more clothes, and jaune's armor is unique to him.
like, blake and ren both have ninja-esque fighting styles, but ren's outfits are sleeveless at best, while blake has shorts, tights, and crop tops in her wardrobe.
I definitely agree in that RWBY-specific way of, "That feels like the original intention but then they didn't do anything with it, so..." In the very early episodes Jaune is absolutely introduced as an old-school outlier using archaic hand-me-downs that, as you say, nicely contrast the sci-fi nature of others' designs. It's a choice that raises a lot of cool questions about Jaune (Why does someone presumably working to keep a low profile after sneaking in choose to wear such unusual armor? Did he feel pressured to continue this legacy by his family? Did he just take what he could get given his lack of experience?) as well as the history of Remnant (Is this level of aura control a semi-recent development? Why would huntsmen further endanger themselves by giving up that extra layer of protection? Does the change have anything to do with Remnant's politics, with armor more representative of the military vs. cute / impractical fighting outfits representing individual freedom?) But then NOTHING happened with Jaune's design, so across the whole of RWBY it feels less like a choice specific to him and more a part of that larger gender trend.
It hasn't helped (me, anyway) that armor isn't fully unique to Jaune. Pyrrha gets armor... except it's far more sexualized with lots of skin showing and heels. Yang has her gauntlets (which do more than just shoot), but she needs the crop-top and shorts too. Mercury looks like he's got plate to protect his upper arms on top of his jacket. Cardin gets a full set of armor similar to Jaune's, as do two of his teammates. And as recently as the last Volume we meet the Knight of Remnant's supposedly beloved fairy tale... who also turns out to be Jaune, despite the fact that the Knight could have been anyone, including a woman. 99% of the fighters aren't bothering with practical clothing, but when they do it's always given to the guys.

Note
Not the guy who asked about DILF Jaune, but imagine if Nora started being her "bubbly" self around Jaune?
Wearing her crop tops & booty shorts on/around him?
Now that's just not fair.
Jaune found himself to be a man who had for the most part forsaken desires. He'd lived his life simple, and albeit alone, but he'd been happy with that. Of course, that meant he had very little experience with women, that weren't his sisters of course.
He was fine with kids, he often taught them after all, but teenagers? That was something else... especially young huntresses at the peak of their lives.
So... it was a bit odd to see young women so overtly showing off their bodies. He knew of course, that huntresses were different, and when out there in the wild it wasn't odd. He also supposed that perhaps there were male gazes upon them at all times, so they were used to it.
So as such, he chose to pay no mind to Nora, who he had learned simply enjoyed wearing less.
"Good morning Nora."
"Mornin di- Jaune-Jaune!"
A quirk of his eyebrow was all he gave her in passing, even as she turned around, tugging on her tight threaded booty shorts which looked ready to burst from the seams with how filled they were. With a shrug of his shoulders, he went back to working on breakfast.
"Alrighty, well if you can wake up the others, please let them know I'll be making breakfast already."
"Of course!" He missed the nearly silent, "Damn it." As she went upstairs.
While it would have been obvious to anyone else that the girls themselves were interested in Jaune. He'd spent his entire life not having to deal with such... luxuries, and as he'd gotten older thoughts such as procuration were no longer in his mind.
Also, it's not like they'd be interested in someone who could very well be their fathers. That would just be silly.

Queering Your F/M Jaune Ships Part 1: Pride of the Roses
With this series, I am embarking on a quest to make F/M ships involving Jaune as queer as can be, because there’s not enough of it IMO. First stop is War of the Roses, done in lieu of Lancaster and Whiteknight separately because I like the polyam ship a bit more. Plus I think Weiss deserves two dorks at once. Enjoy!
~~~
Weiss was conflicted.
On one hand, she was ecstatic to get to go to Pride for the first time, especially with her boyfriend and girlfriend. Over the course of the past year, she’d (sorta) figured out her sexuality, acquired two lovely partners, and had even been exploring her gender (which was still a work-in-progress).
On the other hand, from how Ruby and Jaune described it, Pride sounded so intimidating. So many people, so much singing and chanting and noise, all under the hot Vale summer sun. It sounded like the worst sensory environment imaginable. Ruby and Jaune were well aware of Weiss’ aversion to such conditions, but Weiss had insisted that she could do this. She wanted to experience this, to be a part of something she had never been a part of before. She wouldn’t let the fear of sensory discomfort get in the way of that. Or at least she would try her best.
“If at any point it gets to be too much,” Jaune reminded her as he lounged on their bed, “just tell us, okay?”
“Yeah,” Ruby agreed as she pulled on the tank top she had rainbow tie-dyed the day before. “It can get pretty wild, so just say the word and we can go hang out at that one coffee shop you like instead.”
Weiss chuckled at her partners’ displays of concern for her. It made her feel cared for, but she shook her head. “Trust me, I think I’ll be able to handle it just fine.”
“You’re not just doing this for us, are you?” Jaune asked. “Because I don’t care what we do to celebrate, so long as it’s us.”
“I want to do this,” Weiss assured him with a nod, heading over to the closet to retrieve the outfit she had planned to wear—a crop top in the colors of the bi flag, and a pair of rainbow short shorts. “This time last year, I didn’t have any of this queer stuff figured out. Now that I do, I want to mark the occasion.”
Ruby stepped closer to her and smiled. “Well, however today goes, know that we’re both super proud of you.” She kissed her cheek, then upcapped a face paint marker. “Now, get dressed so I can draw on your face!”
When the whole process was finished, the three of them were more colorful than a 64 pack of crayons. Weiss had her outfit on, with a bi flag painted on one cheek and a polyamorous flag on the other, with various rainbows, hearts, infinity symbols, and affirmations like “queer cutie” and “bi babe” all over her arms and legs (Ruby had gone overboard with the paint, but Weiss figured that was the point). Meanwhile, Ruby wore her tie-dye top, a trans flag skirt, and some demigirl leggings that she made herself. Her face and arms were similarly covered in colorful paint.
“Not looking forward to how much I’m gonna sweat in this thing,” Jaune remarked with a nervous chuckle as he tugged his trans flag binder on.
“Says the guy who wears a hoodie almost every day,” Ruby said.
“Binder sweat is totally different from hoodie sweat.” He took a deep breath, then stretched his arms over his head. He didn’t bind that often (hence his love for baggy hoodies), but today seemed like a good occasion to break out this bad boy. The fact that it fit so well made it all the easier.
“Maybe wear something other than jeans, too?” Weiss added. “Sweaty man?”
“I don’t look good in anything else other than jeans,” Jaune claimed.
“False!” Ruby said. “You also look good in swim trunks.”
Jaune blushed. “Well, you’re biased.”
“She’s objectively right, though,” Weiss said, coming over and wrapping an arm around Ruby’s shoulders, making the demigirl smile.
“Yeah, you’re depriving us by hiding those sexy calves!”
Jaune scoffed. “Ruby has a thing for calf muscles. Take a note of that, Weiss.”
Weiss stuck out a paint-covered leg. “Already knew that. She wrote ‘hottie’ on the back of my leg of all places.”
“It’s the first thing that comes to mind when I look at your legs,” Ruby muttered, blushing and fidgeting with her fingers.
Jaune turned towards them and sighed, resting his hands on his hips. “Well, are we ready to go?”
“Oh no, mister. You’re not getting out of this,” Ruby said threateningly, holding up several face paint markers.
“Oh no...”
“Weiss, hold him down if necessary.”
Weiss nodded, slowly approaching him. “On it.”
“No—!”
((Response to accidentally deleted dare sent by @kr-xero: “Mass dare—everyone randomly swaps clothes with someone else, even the guys”
For this dare, Jaune, Ren, Sun, Neptune, Flynt, Fox, and Yatsu have been added!
And for the purposes of this skit, everyone has to wear their new outfits for an entire day!))
Name Randomizer (these pairs swap with each other):
Emerald & Penny Flynt & Neo Sun & Pyrrha Ruby & Yang Blake & Nora Yatsu & Elm Cinder & Ren Jaune & Neon Neptune & Coco Ilia & Velvet Ciel & Fox Harriet & Weiss
Team JNPR’s dorm...
Nora: Jaaaaaaune, come on! The mall is gonna be closed soon.
Jaune, from inside the bathroom: I’m not going.
Nora: Jaune, whoever you swapped clothes it, it can’t be that bad. Like, Ren swapped with Cinder, and he actually looks pretty good.
Ren, nodding: Who knew thigh-high socks were so comfortable?
Nora: And I got Blake’s, and can I just say, this bow is cuuuuute.
Jaune: Good for you two. I’m still not going.
Nora: Who did you swap with anyway?
Jaune: Neon.
Nora: ...
Ren: Now we get it.
Nora: So what though? You’ve worn a dress before.
Jaune: Yes, and it was elegant and beautiful. This? This is not elegant at all!
Nora: But Jaune, it’s mall day!
Pyrrha, walking in from the kitchen: Uhm...
Nora, looking over and gasping: Ohhh my gods.
Ren, blushing: Let me guess. Sun?
Pyrrha, chuckling: Indeed. I tried to be as authentic to the original as I could, but I couldn’t quite pull off the, uhm....Sun’s unbuttoned look, without a sports bra underneath.
Nora, slamming her fist against the bathroom door: Jaune get out here, Pyrrha abs! I repeat, Pyrrha abs!
Jaune: So what?! We’ve all seen the Pyrrha abs!
Nora: *gasp* Blasphemy!
Jaune: FINE! *the door swings open, revealing Jaune in a blue crop top and pink skirt* There! Happy?!
Ren: *stifles laughter*
Jaune: Oh fuck, even Ren is laughing?
Nora: Jaune, you look good.
Jaune: Do I? Do I really, Nora? I look good in this?
Nora: Yeah!
Jaune: Then why do I feel so ridiculous?!
Pyrrha: It does show off your more...shapely features...
Jaune: ...Oh.
Nora: The gang’s all here, let’s go to the mall!
Pyrrha: Mall trip!
Nora: Woo!
Jaune: Wait! *getting dragged along by his team* Pyrrha, what was it you said about my shape—?
Blake, Sun, and Neptune hanging out at a downtown Vale cafe...
Blake: Wow, Sun. For once, your titties are concealed.
Sun, proud of his shiny chest plate he got from Pyrrha: I’m cool with it.
Neptune, looking over Coco’s sunglasses and nodding: That skirt really works for you, too.
Sun: Bro, that’s kinda gay.
Neptune: So what if I am?
Blake: Boys, focus.
Neptune, chuckling: On what?
Blake: I dunno. Something besides flirting with each other right in front of my salad.
Sun: You’re just mad because for the first time in your life, your weird knees are showing because you’re wearing Nora’s skirt.
Blake: My knees are not weird, they’re normal!
Sun, glancing under the table: I dunno...
Blake, crossing their legs: Watch it, monkey.
Sun: What?
Neptune: Did you just try to look up their skirt, bro? Not cool.
Sun: If I catch you trying to look up my skirt later, I will snap those glasses in half and tell Coco it was your fault.
Neptune, suddenly terrified: You wouldn’t.
Sun: Try me, bro.
Neptune: But I like having all ten fingers.
Sun: Then you better keep things above sea-level, got it?
Blake: Ha. I get it.
Neptune: Was that a hydrophobia joke?
Sun: Maybe... *reaches towards Neptune’s face* Those shades look a little smudged, lemme get that for you—
Neptune: NO! *smacks his hand away*
Ruby, Weiss, Penny, and Ciel at the arcade...
Ruby: YEAH! HIGH SCORE!
Ciel, tugging on the collar of Fox’s top: You know you can use the mallet to whack the moles, right?
Ruby: Why bother when I can punch them?!
Weiss: Just because you’re dressed like Yang doesn’t mean you have to—
Ruby: H’YAH!
Weiss: Punch...so much. Where’s Penny, by the way?
Penny: I’m behind you.
Weiss: AHH!
Penny, a blanket over her head: My apologies for startling you.
Ciel: Why do you have that blanket over your head? And where did you get it?
Penny: Uhm, the prize counter? And I’m using it to conceal myself. Emerald’s top is very revealing... *whispers* My joints are showing. Even the abdominal ones...
Ruby, taking a break from whacking moles: Here, Penny. *takes off Yang’s jacket* Put this on instead.
Penny, peeking out from under her blanket: Oh, thank you, Ruby. *puts on the jacket instead*
Ciel: How did you get enough tickets to win a blanket like that? That must have cost thousands of tickets.
Penny: The movements of the enemy characters on a lot of these games are really simple. I simply have all of their patterns memorized.
Ciel: Woah, that’s really cool...
Weiss: Not to mention, that combo of Yang’s jacket and Emerald’s jeans is...actually a really stylish look.
Penny: Oh. *poses* You think so?
Ciel: OMG...yeah...
Weiss: *blushes* Oh...
Ruby: *nosebleeds* So cute...
Yang, Flynt, Neon, Elm, and Harriet on their way to one of Neon’s parties...
Neon: Geez, does Jaune Boi not have any fashion sense? The bunny rabbit hoodie is cute, though.
Flynt, tugging on Neo’s top: Man, speak for yourself, I feel like I’m being slowly hugged to death. Seriously, who’s decision was it for me to have to trade with the smallest adult person in the world?
Yang, gesturing widely, doing her best Ruby impression: It’s but the will of the universe.
Flynt: The fuck does that mean? *coughs* For real, one flex and this thing’s gonna be ribbons.
Neon: And then Neo will turn you into ribbons for ruining her outfit.
Flynt: This thing’s stretched to all four corners of fuck by this point. It’s already ruined.
Neon: Oh well, Neo will understand, I’m. *glances back at Elm and Harriet* How are the two newbies feeling?
Elm, in Yatsu’s outfit: Pretty good. Kinda glad I traded with someone...not tiny. Sorry, Flynt.
Flynt: Riiiight.
Harriet, practically glittering in Weiss’ dress: I swear....I hate this.
Yang: Why? It actually works for you.
Harriet: That’s just the thing. I feel so...girly. If one of you makes a joke and I giggle, like, full-on giggle? I’m ripping this dress off and jumping out the nearest window.
Neon: Depending on where this party goes tonight, we might all end up doing that.
Yang: Atlesians are weird...why can’t Weiss be more like you guys?
Team CFVY studying in the library...
Coco: I’ll hand it to Neptune, he doesn’t have the worst sense of style, but... *takes the goggles off her head and glares at them* It’s not great.
Fox, in Ciel’s outfit: I’m certain I look great. Right, guys? I know I feel great.
Coco: Come on, Fox. You know you love it. Though the blue beret on red hair doesn’t quite click.
Fox: How embarrassing...
Coco: Velvet’s feeling herself, it seems.
Velvet, taking selfies: Hey, Ilia’s got good taste. I’m taking advantage.
Yatsu: Didn’t we come here to study? Rather than debate fashion?
Coco: It’s like you don’t even know me.
Cinder, Emerald and Ilia waiting in the hallway...
Cinder: Ugh, Neoooo! *knocks on dorm room door* How long does it take to put on a tux?
Emerald: I’d guess a little while. Lotta buttons.
Ilia: Sh—he did swap with Flynt. He’s probably trying to do his own quick tailor job so he doesn’t look like he’s wearing something insanely huge.
Cinder: Ren’s outfit is big on me and I’m dealing just fine.
Ilia: Yeah, but Neo is, like, a third of Flynt’s size.
Emerald: Why are you staring at me?
Ilia: I’m what?
Emerald: You keep looking at me.
Ilia: Oh. I guess I’m just not used to you wearing a dress.
Emerald, messing with the skirt of Penny’s dress: It does feel kinda weird. But also I feel really cute?
Ilia: You look really cute.
Emerald: Aw, thanks.
Ilia: Huh?
Emerald: You said I look cute.
Ilia: Out loud?
Emerald: Yeah?
Ilia: Oh...
Emerald, chuckling: You look really cute in Vel’s outfit, too.
Ilia: Oh.......
Cinder, interrupting them by banging on the door again: NEO! Come on!
Neo, suddenly whipping the door open, dressed in Flynt’s outfit: *flips the hat onto his new short hair* Ladies.
Cinder: Oh gods...
Ilia: Woah, Neo, you look so cool!
Neo, bowing: Thank you. I try.
Emerald: Did you cut your hair while you were in there?
Neo, shaking his head: Illusions.
Emerald: Oh, riiiight. That must be really useful, being genderfluid.
Neo: It is. Glad to know I.... *glances at Cinder* I can still pull off the masculine look. *winks*
Cinder: Uh-uhm.... *turns and starts walking away* T-Took you long enough, let’s just get going before we lose anymore time...
Emerald: But the movie doesn’t start for a while, we’re good—
Cinder: I said let’s go!
Emerald, looking at Neo: How do you do it?
Neo, shrugging: I honestly don’t know. Cinder’s always been easily flustered.
Ilia: Most obvious thing I’ve heard today.
Too Much
Daemons dissolve into Golden Dust when they die, everyone knows this. Their bodies were made of the stuff after all, and they returned to it when their person died.
But then again, so does Pyrrha Nikos.
All are of the Dust, and all turn to Dust again
AO3 LINK
With eyes sharper than any human’s, Qrow Branwen kept a close eye on the battle raging beneath him. Dustakhia flew beside him, their wingtips almost touching with how close they were. Tonight was not the kind of night to get separated.
Grimm tore through the streets and the skies, all red eyes and white bone. The White Fang were still wreaking havoc down there as well. Thank the gods that Jimmy’s damned robots were finally shut off, though who they had to thank for that Qrow couldn’t say for certain.
From his birds-eye view, pun very much intended, he spotted the Nikos girl running out of the tower, followed closely by that one blonde kid. No Oz though, guess he was still below taking care of the would-be Maiden.
Guess it was time for that whole shebang to happen.
Not a moment too soon, he thought, swooping to one side to dodge a dive bombing Nevermore. Things were getting worse by the second, and they weren’t likely to get another chance by the way the night was going.
“Qrow!” shouted his daemon over the rushing wind. He looked where she was indicating and would have raised his eyebrows in recognition if he currently had any.
Oh shit. Speaking of how the night was going.
A certain dark haired Faunus was weaving through the battlefield, dodging Grimm left and right, all while dragging someone with a hauntingly familiar mane of blonde hair along with them. Behind her, the Faunus’ panther daemon dragged an equally unconscious bear.
Ice flooded his body. Yang and Titus weren’t moving. Why weren’t Yang and Titus moving?!
Meeting Dusty’s eyes he nodded, fairly certain that he would have been unable to verbally respond even if he’d been in human form, but he knew she understood. They were the same person after all.
Wings tucked to his sides, he dove towards the two figures and their daemons. Qrow’s eyes picked up on odd details, like how Yang’s friend was limping, or the tears on her face, or how she was running from something, but there were no Grimm on her metaphorical tail.
Qrow just barely had time to notice how Titus was dripping golden Dust from a wound in his foreleg that mirrored the one in his niece’s arm before he was nearly knocked out of the air by his other niece.
His squawk of alarm was echoed in his daemon, and Dusty looked distinctly ruffled where she flapped a meter or so away from him. Being pulled up short in the middle of a dive was never pleasant, and tonight already had his nerves on their last thread.
He eyed the ground, searching for the tell-tale bright hair that would indicate where his definitely injured niece was, but it was gone.
Qrow did manage to spot Ruby’s cape and Eurus’s familiar grey-furred form darting through the swarming mass of Grimm. Every so often she vanished in a cloud of brighter-than-normal petals and reappeared behind a soon to be melting Grimm, usually flanked by her daemon to ensure the kill.
They’d be okay, even in this horror show.
But where was Yang?
“We’ll find her,” Dusty called to him, feeding him reassurances through their bond. He only hoped she was right.
He swooped down alleyways, forever thankful for the sharp eyesight granted to him in this form. It was necessary to find Yang, and finding Yang was paramount.
The only disadvantage of his enhanced eyesight was it allowed him to see more clearly than any human the extent of the carnage hiding in these shadows. Bodies ripped to shreds and left to rot, most in poses that indicated they’d been slaughtered running or trying to hide.
Golden Dust from dead daemons covered everything like the most macabre glitter imaginable.
The worst bodies were the ones with injuries he recognized as ones not made by the Grimm. Bullet holes from white-shelled robots and violent extremists alike. These weren’t victims of nature, even twisted nature. These people were victims of other people.
Qrow’s only comfort was that he had yet to recognize Yang or her black-haired friend among the bodies. And the longer he looked, the more likely it became that they’d made it to the docks were Glynda had ordered everyone to retreat for evacuation.
To his right, Dusty called softly that she hadn’t spotted them either, which was comforting at least. Her quiet words were cut off by the roar of a rocket from overhead, and Qrow looked up just in time to see… a locker?
The blue flames were unmistakable, he’d used the same lockers when he’d gone here after all. But why would there be a weapons locker being launched this late into the battle? All the kids that weren’t armed by now were probably dead, as horrible as it was to think about.
“We’re not having any luck here,” Dusty remarked, and Qrow would have snorted at her choice of words if he’d been able to. Even without looking, Qrow could feel her rolling her eyes at him. “You know what I mean you idiot.”
He did, but hey, sue him. The world was falling the fuck apart, he was gonna take the levity he could take, even and especially if it was at his own expense.
“We should regroup at the docks,” and he followed her when she soared back above the rooftops, “Glynda’ll be wondering where we are.” Yeah she would, but he knew perfectly well that Dusty was only saying this to hide her own worry about their niece.
Gliding over the rooftops, he saw more bodies than he had since his days with the tribe. And even then, never this many all at once.
His heart sank when he vaguely recognized a group of bodies. Same coating of golden Dust on all three of them, but the weapons in their hands identified them as students. Students he vaguely recognized from alcohol-blurred memories of a tournament fight with Nikos’ team.
“Only three bodies,” Dusty commented, echoing his own thoughts. “Maybe the fourth got away.” At least one of them was around to be optimistic. Qrow didn’t really see the point.
Finally reaching the docks, he let out a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding at the sight of the huddled form of his firecracker. And if she was here, and not being crowded by medics and other yahoos, then her injury wasn’t life threatening. Thank the gods.
Swooping behind a lamppost, not even bothering to find a less conspicuous place in his hurry, he landed as a human already running towards the cluster of huddled figures. Dusty swooped after him, wing tips brushing up against his head as she kept pace. The cluster of people was much smaller than he’d been expecting, even after seeing the amount of bodies more first hand than probably anyone besides the dead themselves.
He recognized Yang, obviously, and her black-haired friend. His niece was still unconscious, lying more limp and expressionless than he’d ever seen her and… dear gods… her arm-
Qrow shook himself. There would be time for all that later. He’d just barely relaxed upon seeing that Yang was safe when his heart clenched again upon realizing that now his other niece was missing, along with her white-haired teammate. Winter’s kid sister.
Glynda wasn’t here so he turned to the only other adults present. “Where’s Ruby?” he rasped to Oobleck and Port before he’d even fully reached them. Dusty came and settled on his shoulder as he finally stopped, flapping her wings and shifting restlessly, betraying his own emotions.
The two teacher’s daemons weren’t much better, but they both seemed to be holding themselves together as best as they could. “Miss Rose and Miss Schnee insisted on returning to the tower,” Oobleck said sharply before Port could go off onto what would surely be a well-meaning but long-winded tangent.
“You hafta go after them!” insisted a battered looking blonde kid from where he was crouched beside a pair of even more worse for wear kids.
Qrow glanced down at the pair, who seemed to be struggling to get up for some reason even with obvious injuries covering them head to two. Their poor daemons were soaked in Dust, but they too were nudging their humans into more upright positions. What the hell?
Probably seeing his confused expression, the blonde kid said, “Jaune and Pyrrha are still down there.” As if he was supposed to know who they were. The kid’s teammates he supposed but still...
Pyrrha.
Pyrrha Nikos.
He connected the dots.
“I’ll be right back,” he growled at nobody in particular, taking off at a run back towards the tower where he could see signs of a battle. Fire and gold, but that was all he could see from this distance. That dragon was unmistakable though.
“Make sure Yang gets to a mediship as soon as possible!” Dusty called back to the assembled, ignoring the shocked expressions they bore from his daemon speaking to them directly. Screw the taboos. Enough was falling apart tonight, why not that as well.
Slipping his form back into feathers, he shot through the air like a missile. As the crow flies was the saying, and by the gods he flew that night.
Qrow flew and he saw.
He saw Nikos’s blonde friend crumpled next to the locker he’d spotted earlier. Dead or dying, probably. A golden dog was lying on the ground beside him, so not dead yet then. He had no time.
He saw Jimmy fighting like the machine he was, his daemon a whirlwind of fur and claws beside him. He saw Glynda brushing Grimm aside with a flick of her riding crop like they were no heavier than paper. He had no time.
He saw Winter’s kid sister fighting almost dancing in a snowstorm of glyphs. The flash of her rapier cutting through the oil-smoke bodies of countless Grimm was only outmatched by the glow from the symbols that swirled in the air around her. He had no time.
He saw a pathway of a dark echo of those glyphs tracing their way up to the top of the tower. He saw the last flicker of his niece’s cape and her daemon’s tail disappear over the lip of the tower. No time, no time, no time-
He didn’t see a flash like a bonfire and a sudden end to the fight at the top of the tower.
He did see a flash like wings of light and fire, and he heard the gut-wrenching scream and howl that accompanied it.
Qrow was out of time.
If it weren’t for Dusty immediately racing for where the brilliantly white light was barely fading, he probably would have dropped right out of the sky. Only the insistent tug at their lengthening bond kept him moving forward.
Summer. Oh gods it couldn’t be happening again. Not Ruby, please, gods, please-
Shooting over the edge of the tower, he was human before he hit the ground. “Ruby!” he shouted, gathering his niece’s body up into his arms. Dusty was at his side nosing her beak through Eurus’s fur. But neither the girl nor her wolf were responding.
They weren’t responding, but the sheer fact that Eurus had yet to scatter into golden Dust was evidence enough that Ruby was still alive. Qrow was shaking with sobs, and Ruby’s head was lolling unresponsive against his shoulder, but she was alive.
Speaking of golden Dust…
After who knew how long, Qrow drew back to look around, suddenly remembering that there had been a fight here. And judging by how the loser had been dispatched, he probably shouldn't lower his guard against whoever was the new Fall Maiden. With a wary glance towards the dragon, he counted himself lucky that it at least seemed incapacitated.
But the Dust… It was everywhere. Far more than there should have been, even from the death of an elephant sized daemon.
And where was the body?
Laying Ruby gently on the ground beside her equally unresponsive daemon, he lurched to his feet and finally looked around. The wind that whipped through the destroyed office made him register on a distant level that his face was wet with tears. But in this disaster area, he had no time for them.
Gears lay everywhere, along with cracked pillars and most of the ceiling. The CCT was definitely busted, but that was barely a concern at the moment. Where was the body?
Stumbling forward, he glanced backwards towards Dusty, who was still sitting beside their niece. She’d keep watch for now, her stance seemed to say. He thought he’d reached the limit for how grateful he could be for his daemon, but apparently he’d been wrong.
Qrow stepped carefully over shattered bits of building and what looked like the remains of Oz’s desk. Dust was covering every surface in a film of glittering sand, and he still hadn’t found the body.
Reaching what had to be the epicenter, judging on the concentration of Dust and at the very edge of his bond with Dusty, he realized why.
Sitting in the middle, atop a pile of golden powder and beside what looked like a trail of footprints of a woman about Winter’s size, he found a crown of bronze.
Only the crown though. Its owner was nowhere to be seen.
The almost-bonfire he’d barely seen suddenly made sense, as did the abundance of golden Dust, too much for just one daemon. Pyrrha Nikos was gone. Gone the way a daemon went, dissolved into golden light and Dust at the moment of her death.
Not even a body left to bury. Ruby hadn’t died the way Summer had at least, but it seemed like poor Miss Nikos had taken her place.
Me: “I should probably be writing so I don’t get so desperate at the last minute that--”
My brain: “The El Goonish Shive characters as students of Beacon academy MAKE IT HAPPEN GO GO GO!”
Me: “FINE. I’ll draw notes, but I’m not necessarily doing the story!”
So anyway here’s some notes for a story I’m not necessarily doing.
Team SPET (Spectral), led by Grace
Grace Sciuridae:
Faunus, Vale origin. Squirrel tail, “antennae” forelocks, and clawed fingernails/toenails (not actual claws, she just let them grow out.
Emblem: An acorn, generally worn as a pin on her sleeve.
Outfit is a loose long-sleeved shirt in green, black pants, bandoleer belt with a sheathe for her weapon and pouches, and no shoes/gloves.
Beacon uniform adjustments: no shoes, and she doesn’t wear the neck ribbon thing, but otherwise standard girl’s outfit.
Semblance: Extensorary. Grace can extend her aura to feel anything in the area, manipulate objects, or simulate flight.
Weapon: Shade Tail. A zweihander that splits into two bladed whips. Possible Dust effects.
Backstory: Kidnapped as a child by Damien, who in this universe is an absolutely insane faunus-supremacist that thinks he can control the Grimm, Grace lived several unkind years in the forests of Vale before managing to escape and arriving at Beacon academy. Ozpin let her in as a student mostly to provide her the protection of paperwork, since from what she’s describing Damien might be tied to the Bigger Secret of the world. She becomes partners with Tedd during initiation. Her upbringing does leave her mostly the same as EGS prime canon, ignorance of all social norms included, but she has an especial dislike of the creatures of Grimm due to Damien’s madness. Also she doesn’t get racism. Period.
Susan Pompoms:
Human, Argus origin. Appears mostly the same as EGS canon, with exception of single blonde side-braid.
Emblem: Venus symbol, used as a belt buckle.
Outfit is a dark blue longcoat has straps on the back, through which backpack straps are run to hold onto her Big Box O’ Stuff. Wears blue pants held up by belt and going into calf-high boots, black leotard, and black three-finger half gloves. Shoulder armor and a metal backbrace.
Beacon uniform adjustments: Boy’s uniform instead of girl’s, but otherwise standard.
Semblance: Portation. Susan can mark any container as hers and teleport whatever's in it to herself and back.
Weapon: Morrígna. A warhammer that can split into a sword and mallet. The mallet can morph into a one-handed gun.
Backstory: The early parts of the backstory would remain basically the same, but she doesn’t meet Nanase until Beacon and has only a passing familiarity with Sarah as ‘Oh yeah, her family comes to Argus sometimes.’ But she would have a friendship/rivalry with Pyrrha, which might lead to some interesting interactions with Jaune. She winds up partnered with Elliot during initiation. And, upon realizing how completely unaware of social norms sheltered Grace is, would be very vocal about certain people not abusing her.
Elliot Dunkel:
Human, Mantle origin. Literally looks the same as canon, because why break a good look?
Emblem: An oval with some abstract lines, seen as a symbol on his shirt.
Outfit is a White cape and black crop-top, black pants and white shoes, belts in an x-shape over his belly with pouches for carrying things.
Beacon uniform adjustments: he does not wear the white undershirt. That’s it. The jacket’s buttoned up, but he doesn’t wear the undershirt.
Semblance: Soul Fury. Elliot can draw on the negativity of others, such as pain and fear, in order to increase his own physical attack strength. He has trained this to a degree that he is capable of jumping to intense heights.
Weapons: Honor and Justice. Arm-mounted bladed tonfas, capable of shooting grappling hooks from the wrist to either drag himself to a location or to bring a foe to him. Used to be part of the Four Ideals, but leg-mounted equivalents went to Ellen.
Backstory: Saved Tedd from some bullies during one of his visits to Mantle, became close friends. Otherwise standard backstory. Some people might note his childhood doesn’t mention his twin sister, and he’ll say there was a whole money-legality thing until recently. Anybody with a truth-sensing semblance will know he’s lying. The truth, however, is Very Classified. Like seriously you don’t know how classified it is.
Tedd Verres:
Human, Atlas origin. Left half of his hair is the original ‘long hair’, right half is the new ‘pixie cut’.
Emblem: A circle with three lines extending from it, which is placed on his equipment.
Outfit is a light blue longcoat with internal pockets (and everyone is going to comment on that since none of the other characters have pockets), light blue pants, black shirt and boots. Also some purple armor around his chest that is slightly rounded and matching greaves on his legs.
Beacon uniform adjustments: wears the girl’s outfit, but with a tie.
Semblance: Copyscan. Tedd can identify other people's semblances with some observation, and make limited-use copies of them with physical contact.
Weapon: Convergence. A gauntlet with an extendable shield, which also stores copies of semblances. Ted also has an energy pistol called Expedience.
Backstory: Tedd’s dad still works for a coverup agency, but now it’s the RWBY-canon ‘Keep Magic and the existence of Salem an utter secret’ cover-up agency. Tedd was brought into this against his father’s wishes when General Ironwood realized the potency of his semblance, but this also gave him access to a few classified doohickies such as this fused universe’s version of the Dewitchery Diamond. Going to Beacon is meant as a ‘field test’ of Tedd as an agent, at least according to Ironwood, but there’s also his dad wanting him to have friends that aren’t involved in all the top secret drama. Also yes, he does have a copy of Ellen’s gender change spell in Convergence which she willingly refreshes for him, and he will sometimes spend time as a girl. (Possible connection to May Marigold down the line?)
Team STNE (Stone), led by Sarah
Sarah Brown:
Human, Mistral origin. The only real difference is that her hairband now sports fancy curls and flanges and also it’s made of bronze as a sort of informal helmet.
Emblem: a double-sided question mark which is engraved into her arm guards.
Outfit is a pink knee-length dress, belt with four pouches radially aligned. Armored boots, greaves, and with her shoulders, all bronze.
Beacon uniform adjustments: none, but she still wears her headgear.
Semblance: Lookout. Sarah can instantly take in details about her environment to a highly detailed degree, with a range that extends the more aura she pours into it. While she can examine things that might be hidden, i.e. the inside of a closed book, she cannot change anything.
Weapon: Zauberei. Spear/staff that can shift into a rifle and split into a pistol and dagger. It sort of looks like a giant paintbrush?
Backstory: An ordinary Mistral combat student who went up against Pyrrha Nikos and Susan during some combat tournaments and got a case of starry eyes for both of them. Upon hearing they were going to Beacon, she decided to go too because why not? What she doesn’t realize is that she’s going to be put in charge of a team of Secrets and Drama. She winds up partnered with Justin during initiation.
Justin Tolkiberry:
Human, Vale origin. Aside from a very fancy set of earrings in one ear, he looks about the same as his canon counterpart.
Emblem: Abstract fire, which is displayed prominantly on the back of his gi.
Outfit is an open orange gi with lots of red fire patterns and buckled belts around the ankles, thighs, biceps, and forearms. Also sandles. And he does have a belt around the pants with a few pouches.
Beacon uniform adjustments: Wears sandles instead of shoes.
Semblance: Not known, exactly. Justin knows he can ignore damage sometimes, but the details are unclear.
Weapon: Dashing Delver. A rectangle-headed shovel that turns into a tower shield/sled.
Backstory: Basically the same as canon Justin, except that because Remnant is more accepting of LGBT+ people overall he wasn’t bullied and was just very irritated at Mellissa. Also Elliot and Nanase were on entirely different continents so there’s that. He’ll be the snarky rational one when everything about his team is revealed.
Nanase Kitsune:
Faunus, Menagerie origin. Has naturally dual-colored hair to match her naturally dual-colored fox ears.
Emblem: A heart-shaped fox head thing she wears on her shirt.
Outfit is a black jacket, yellow croptop with emblem in red, red skirt with yellow trim, red armbands, black shoes, and a pouch belt that hangs off one hip instead of being used as a belt.
Beacon Uniform Adjustment: She keeps her armbands.
Semblance: Fairy Companion. Nanase can summon fairy companions to herself or anyone she has an emotional connection with. These fairies run off her subconscious unless she deliberately controls them, and can be used to communicate, scout, or detonate as weapons. Their size is controllable, ranging from ‘hold in one hand’ to ‘outright as big as Nanase herself’, though they always appear to be wearing what Nanase is at time of summoning. Larger fairies take proportionally more aura to summon.
Weapon: Faewind. A backpack with four cable-attached fairy wings. Each wing is a bladed arm/leg shield with inbuilt nozzles that serve either as short-range blasters or a jetpack when retracted.
Backstory: The Kitsunes are a very important family in Menagerie, with a lot of political clout, and Nanase is expected to reflect that as her mother sends her to Beacon in order to indirectly represent Menagerie at the Vytal tournament. Nanase, however, is using this first chance to not have to be a Perfect Icon to actually search for her own identity. She becomes partners with Ellen during initiation, and picks up on how Ellen is really not comfortable talking about her own past. There’s a slow gradual growth of trust going on, and Nanase slowly comes to realize she might love this girl.
Ellen Dunkel:
Human(ish), Mantle origin. Looks the same as canon because of course she does.
Emblem: A rectangular mirror with a suspiciously familiar diamond shape in the center, painted on her shirt.
Outfit: Where Elliot wears a cape, Ellen wears an open coat. But otherwise it’s basically the same, if adjusted for female.
Beacon Uniform adjustments: She doesn’t wear the socks. That’s it. She wears the shoes but not the socks.
Semblance: Shift Beam. Ellen is capable of generating a beam of light from her palm. If the target has no active aura, it is impacted with a degree of force relative to the amount of aura input. If a target does have aura, the beam can cause temporary physical alteration; Ellen is still learning the ins and outs of this, but she can usually make other bodies more like hers (i.e. physically female). This is noted to be unusual, since no other known semblance outright shapeshifts people. Consequently, she tries to avoid using it in ways where this can be observed.
Weapon: Courage and Virtue. Leg tonfas. Complete with jump-jets. Used to be Elliot's.
Backstory: Officially she’s just the long-lost twin of Elliot’s who recently got back out of the foster care system. Unofficially, the dewitchery diamond exists in this fused universe and Ellen has to keep her origin a secret because if Salem heard about her hooooo boy! The original plan was for her, Elliot, and Tedd to all be on the same team so they could protect each other but she wound up partnering with Nanase and then on a seperate team and now Ellen is conflicted between explaining her origins to her partner and not wanting people to freak out. But she does slowly start to explain her various quirks, as people (especially Nanase) start to notice stuff about her.
The Plot:
I dunno, team SPET and STNE interact with teams RWBY and JNPR and get involved in the world-spanning conspiracy? My brain is saying this is enough for now.
- D-cup breasts
- Petite, athletic body with strong muscles underneath her skin
- She has golden eyes
- Like her brother, her facial features are very androgynous
- Also like her brother, she has a blue aura
- Her skin is a bit paler compared to her brother's
- She has a bit of a bubble butt
- She can always be seen wearing an arrowhead necklace that her girlfriend had given her
__________
Outfits
Combat/Casual: She wears a corset over her torso colored black with a white cropped tank top under it, leaving a good portion of her chest visible and has a zipper in the front. There are two short shoulder sleeves that are connected to the corset as well. The corset also has a thin strap going across her chest, connected between the sleeves with a buckle in the middle. Around her waist she wears a white belt where she keeps a couple of red pouches connected to. She wears a pair of tight, black pants that have sections of red around the knees. On her right thigh is a harness in the shape of an 'x' connected to her belt from the top and wrapped around her thigh at the bottom, with a round magnet in the middle. Above the harness is where the sheath for her shortsword hangs from, which doesn't get in the way at all when she draws either her sword or crossbow. Hanging from her belt at her left hip is a quiver for her crossbow bolts. She wears a pair of very light, black knee-high boots with two thin straps and buckles around the top of each boot. She wears a pair of black sleeves over her arms with holes for her thumbs, and with patches of white on the undersides of the forearms.
Casual 2: She still wears her normal boots, but she wears a pair of tight grey pants, black stockings over them that reach just below the middles of her thighs, and a tight black sleeveless top with a skirt to it, reaching an inch or so below her rear. Her pants have black bands around them on the thighs. Over the pants she wears a pair of black mini shorts under the skirt part of her top. She also wears a hood over her head that is connected to a small piece of clothing that wraps around her midsection just under her breasts. The entire garment is colored dark red, and has holes cut out in the hood for her fox ears. She always keeps her sword on her at her right hip.
________
Bio
- First year student of Beacon and member of team CIAN (Cyan)
  - Eighteen years old
  - Bisexual
  - Parents are Raine Daturas and Vivian Strife, and her identical twin brother is Inigo Strife-Daturas
- Likes to joke about being the older sister, due to her being born five minutes before Inigo
- When science became reliable enough, Raine and Vivian had signed up for Raine to be impregnated by using a mix of medicinal dust, Vivian's DNA, and other things to combine with sperm cells and it was implanted in an egg in Raine's womb. It took numerous tries, but Inigo and Indigo were born two years behind Ebony and the others
- While Inigo trained hard to be accepted into Beacon early, Indigo didn't have that luxury due to her highly antisocial attitude at a young age. When Inigo had gone to combat school, Indigo was instead given training by the Rangers themselves due to Vivi being commandant, and decided by a vote by all Rangers. Due to this training, Indigo had to spend the entire duration of combat school as a normal student would, and went into Beacon two years after Inigo.
 - Much like Inigo, she sees Star as an older sister
 - While she doesn't use a longbow as a weapon as her family does, she does have one to fire for recreational purposes with her brother. She isn't as skilled though
- She decided to train a bit more under Star's father more than what Inigo did, and her sword was created in his honor
- She can act like a tsundere at times
- Very much like her brother, she hates to be called short and will yell at the person that does it
- Trains constantly and has excellent balance
- She also takes heavily after Vivi in her manner of speech, using words like "This one, his, he," or things like that
- Loves for her ears to be taken care of and given attention by those closest to her, especially her girlfriend.
- While she doesn't have a tail like her brother, she loves for her hair to be brushed
- Her girlfriend is Kairi Aideen
- After she began to date Kairi, she started to take lessons from Alyss on bellydancing. She was a fast learner and loves to use water to swirl around her with her semblance.
________
Weapons and Semblance
Weapon 1: Crossfire: A custom, light, mostly wooden crossbow that packs a powerful punch. It has two limbs to it in the front that are in a horizontal 'X' formation with two strong chords, connected in the middle to launch its bolts. The front of the crossbow and the limbs are made of metal. The main body is dark red wood while the limbs and the metal they're attached to are white. The chords are a red color and are infused with water dust, letting Indigo use her semblance to easily pull them back while she is already bringing out another bolt to fire. The stock is very simple, made of lightweight black metal and can fold to the crossbow's left side when needed. The arms also fold to the sides as well, and can easily be stored on her thigh thanks to the magnet on the harness there attaching to the folded stock. Crossfire is complete with a small scope with two magnification levels, medium and long, and the top has a simple sight for close range.
Weapon 2: Diamond Vulpes: A simple looking shortsword with two flares in the blade at separate spots, and a wider flare at the base. The blade is a diamond-like color, fifteen inches long and an inch and a half wide, and the hilt is four inches long with a simple circular pommel. The hilt is black metal mostly with spirals of red across it. The hilt has the capability of extending a long shaft from the pommel to four and a half feet long including the hilt, turning the weapon into a glaive.
Semblance: Even Flow: Shared semblance with her twin brother. Indigo can control any type of liquid completely. She can freeze it or make it scalding hot. She can turn it into mist like a smokescreen. It extends to snow too. The downside is if she makes the liquid boil, her body and her own blood gets hot and it gets harder to breath the longer she keeps the temperature high while it’s in her control, and she could suffer a heat stroke. Freezing the liquid makes her body and her blood cold and she’ll begin to shiver more and more the longer she has the liquid frozen while it’s in her control, and she could suffer hypothermia. She does her best to keep a balance.
________
Sexual Information
- (If futa) Seven inch long, thick Canine cock
- Can make her body take a slime form thanks to her semblance, turning her body and hair into a light blue color.
- Can make water have the consistency and thickness of slime, and can make any tentacles or other appendages like that blow loads of fake cum that feels like the real thing. It’s still water, so it’s safe.
 - While she hates to be called short, she likes the size difference between her and her girlfriend
  - She loves to use her semblance to create water tentacles to pleasure herself, and Kairi
- When she isn't using her water tentacles on Kairi or another person, she's actually fairly submissive
- She loves to just watch other girls get fucked either by someone else, or by the tentacles she can summon
- She and Kairi have an open relationship so that Indigo can watch Kairi being fucked, and she absolutely loves to watch Kairi be fucked by someone else
- She loves to hear dirty talk from Kairi as Kairi is being fucked in front of her
- Loves shower sex
- Loves sex while swimming
- She is a huge switch, and loves to be either dominant or submissive
- (Jauneverse Harem) When she's able to, Indigo loves to have Jaune boost her aura so that she can make multiple slime clones of herself and reverse gangbang him. She needs a good amount of water to do this, but Jaune's semblance makes it possible for her to make the clones easily with the water.
RWBY Volume 7 Chapter 5 Rundown
I really did not expect to get a daily huntress life montage episode, but here it was. Luckily that’s not all it was, and the ending is definitely gonna set events in motion to upset the status quo. But we can’t reach the ending unless we go to where it starts.
And it starts with Penny giving a sunrise wake up call to Team RWBY in their Atlas dorm. They’re in wall indented bunks, wearing matching Atlas Academy pajamas... and with the loose shirts it looks like they grew in more than just height over the last few Volumes, especially Weiss. Guess those dresses bind the chest pretty tightly. Or maybe they made one character model for the Atlas pajamas outfit and then changed up the face, hair, and other important details like Yang’s arm but left the torso basically the same? Regardless, they’re all very tired... except Ruby, who’s excited to start doing official Huntress work.
Next thing we know everyone’s gathered in a briefing room to get the rundown on the day’s missions, and Jaune is coerced to give his cup of coffee to Marrow. Stupid puppy dog eyes... Clover starts briefing everyone, and his monologue plays over a montage of everyone doing the very thing he’s talking about. How convenient for show with minimal tell. Most of the missions are going to be escorting supply runs out to the Amity launch site and fighting off whatever Grimm might gather around the mine or strike on the road. But since so much construction stuff is going to making Amity a communication satellite, they can’t mend the damage to Mantle’s border wall so they have to do some Attack on Titan style Garrison work and defend the wall from approaching Grimm. We see Nora adorably playing with Ren’s braid, or maybe redoing it for him that morning, before they set to work on perimeter defense. Then the Bees are seen in the mine with Marrow killing Grimm, since it is a volatile part of the launch site and worth defending. He calls their combat styles into question, specifically how they don’t seem suited to work well together and they might want to mix up who teams up with who. But they execute a flawless tag team take down on a Beowolf and that quiets him down for a bit. Let’s get into that a little, because people have been getting a lot of impressions on it. Here’s how I see it. He comes from a team where all the members were chosen specifically to compliment each other. These are girls who met and were partnered by random selection, and had to learn how to make their styles meld together, so from the outside looking in it seems disjointed but when they apply themselves they have synergy. So it’s a matter of perspective, really.
But then we get to my third favorite part of the episode, and the moment we had been teased about since RTX. Jaune is indeed helping a group of preschoolers cross the street on the way to school, with a stop sign that has six sides instead of the eight real world signs do... odd. And this earns him the attention of five flirty, posing, winking, Real. Thirsty. Moms. A sixth even comes up and gives him a casserole she made... apparently something she’s done before. And she’s not taking no for an answer, shoving it into his hands even while acting all flustered and shy. Nora is watching from nearby and attributes his mom-magnet status to the new haircut. Makes you wonder if these ladies would still be into Jaune if they knew he was only about 19?... But even this has a point. It’s still important to help out with day to day troubles and jobs around Mantle to help the public know that the huntsmen and huntresses are there to keep them safe.
Clover assures them they can use their free time however they choose, and everyone seems to take full advantage of that. The Rose-Xiao Long sisters spend their time hunting down Grimm that get into the city, while the Schnee sisters bond over strengthening Weiss’ summoning abilities... even if Winter doesn’t want to directly show praise or approval of her sister’s growing finesse. But another very practical activity emerges, training with the Ace Ops. Jaune and Ren get their butts kicked in some Atlas equivalent of the X-Men’s Danger Room by Vine and Elm respectively, but seem to learn a thing or two from the experience. Ruby tests her speed against Harriet as the two run in circles, with a little help from Weiss’ glyphs as she also gets to practice keeping up with Ruby’s movements to place the glyphs where and when she needs them. But Oscar gets the executive treatment, sparring with Ironwood himself to try and pry some of Oz’s muscle memory and fighting skills loose and hopefully bring Ozpin out too.
Next thing we know it seems to be the next morning and Ruby is excitedly telling Penny about her and Weiss’ mission the previous day complete with sound effects and wild hand gestures, while Blake drags a sluggish Yang away by the wrist to get ready for work. Jaune has learned his lesson and brought Marrow a coffee of his own, but Nora is still asleep in her chair. Can’t trust her with caffeine... Team RWBY are at varying levels of enthusiasm as they stare at the mission board, and as the days seem to fly by that energy starts to drain from all of them until its a team family napping pile. If you’re a shipper like me you can enjoy Blake sleeping with her head in Yang’s lap and Weiss leaning against Ruby’s shoulder to snooze, and if you’re not you can still enjoy the whole group comfort dynamic and Yang catching some z’s on her sister’s other shoulder. It’s a moment for all types.
But then IT happens. The best thing we could have ever hoped for all Volume. Team FNKI is Back, BABY!!!! Flynt got some fresh clothes including a jacket, while Neon wrapped her pigtails up into buns that look like cat ears and changed her whole wardrobe. She kept her cat collar-like choker and roller blades but added a white jacket connected to paw padded fingerless gloves, a crop top connected to a pair of short shorts with stars on them and a white belt by what look like suspenders, and blue leggings with a rainbow stripe down the outside and a few holes worn into it. It’s a whole ass look and she makes it work. But for all her clothing changes, her in-fight attitude is still just as bratty and insulting, calling Nora slow even as she smashes pillars to run directly at her. Ren is hiding behind a pillar and trying to shoot at... gasp, a third member of Team FNKI!!! His weapon is a whip and his outfit is mostly white and gold with a very deep cut to his shirt. Curious to see if we learn anything more about this person. But we don’t have time for that, because we bear witness to a MURDER. Neon took notice of Ren putting in so much effort against her teammate as she did a flip over him and froze Stormflower with her glowsticks, and goes for Nora’s jugular. “Where’s all that energy when he’s around you?~” ABSOLUTELY. ROASTED.
Nora takes the white and gold guy with a grenade before hopping on Magnhild and somehow riding it like a witch’s broomstick using repeated grenade shots as she chases after Neon... past Oscar fighting a guy wearing blue and black? No... it can’t be.
Tumblr media
They based the other two members of Team FNKI on that goddamn dress meme from 2015???? You brilliant bastards... what else could we expect from the people who made a raver chick out of Nyan Cat and a jazz musician from one of their own Minecraft jokes? So JNR and Oscar are doing their best against Team FNKI, much to Ironwood’s subtle amusement. Flynt and the blue guy, whose name we later learn is Kobalt, are beaten and Neon is cornered in the center of the training room by Jaune Ren and Oscar, then ambushed from above by Nora. Even with a black eye that disappears within 4 seconds, Neon is very impressed with how much they’ve grown since the Vytal Festival. And she seems kinda flirty with Oscar, much to his flustered confusion. Jaune returns the compliment to a certain degree saying they kept them on their toes a good many times. Flynt invites them to lunch, and Nora says she could eat a sandwich the size of a human being. Kobalt, the human she was comparing its size to, is not amused that he gets hypothetical lettuce on his head. Weird how much her fantasies can affect reality like that... But before they can all head off to bond, Ironwood needs JNR+ Oscar for a mission so they promise to try and meet up again.
We shift to Ruby, Penny, Qrow and Clover in a transport bringing supplies out to the launch site and driving past a few adorable penguins, though Ruby is bored by the long drive when an airship would be faster. But Penny informs her the supplies would be too heavy and use up too much Dust fuel when they should be conserving it for coming fights. The girls have a conversation about making friends and finding time to balance between work and social lives while the men are in the back playing cards and shooting the shit. Clover keeps winning. But they still have a heart to heart about how good of an influence Qrow has been for these truly gifted kids even if he doesn’t want to give himself that credit. He tries to shift the praise back to the Ace Ops for keeping the teens safe in Atlas, but Clover says its a no brainer, since the new generation is the ones who will inherit the planet they’re still trying to save, and that hopefully they can keep the world in better shape than the current adults are leaving it for them. Some real world parallels about environmental protection and all that if you ask me, and it’s subtle enough that I don’t mind at all. Qrow confirms that he really is off the booze by saying that once upon a time he would have drank a toast to that sentiment, and Clover calls him out on his behavior. But not the alcoholism, the deflecting praise. He deserves to feel good about what he’s done, because he really has been doing a better job than he thinks.
The truck comes to a stop, and the cause is unlike anything they would have expected. Robyn Hill and her Happy Huntresses have set up a roadblock. Penny stays in the truck as a last resort, while the other three get out to try and talk to Robyn. She wants to know why they’re bringing stuff that could be fixing the wall and protecting Mantle to a mine in the middle of the tundra. Turns out the sheep faunus from last episode really was one of her agents and reported what she saw. You might think there would be no harm in telling Robyn that they’re trying to make Amity into a new communication tower so global communication can be restored. It’s a noble thing to do and I doubt she would object to such an ambition, even though she would have liked to know sooner. But the more people you tell about it the more chance there is the wrong people will hear it. So if Watts got word about it and told Salem she might actively choose to send a lot more Grimm to ruin the launch instead of there being a few that naturally wander onto the site. Or if Jacques found out he might make a smear campaign out of it by spinning the truth. Also, it may not be for Clover to tell.
He goes by the book in all things, so he would have to run it by Ironwood to know if this is info they can afford to share with Robyn. So he tries to play it off as getting lost out in the snow where everything looks the same, but she calls him out on it. He says Amity is at the mine for routine maintenance, but she’s not buying that either since usually only drones and select technicians do the repairs, the next tournament isn’t for a while, and the supplies they’re taking are more than what would be necessary not to mention better suited for Mantle wall repair. She demands answers for the shady military business she’s taken careful notice of, and for the materials to be handed over for the good of the people. But Clover gives that a hard pass and encourages her to focus on her political campaign so she can request materials be taken where they’re needed through the proper legal channels, especially when she shifts her questions over to Ruby and Qrow and the young huntress tries to assure her this is also for the good of Mantle. She seems very ready to fight for the sake of raiding the truck here and now, and everyone’s hands go to their weapons... until Penny pops out of the truck with her swords drawn and demands Robyn stand down and call off the camouflaged huntresses approaching the back of the truck. Guess her sensors are better than the human eye. Her pleading for Robyn to let them through peacefully works and the barrier gets taken down. But Robyn swears vengeance, she’ll get to the bottom of this secret no matter the cost. Potential antagonist? I hope not.
But enough of that tension, time for Schnee vs Schnee sparring: Weiss’ Knight vs a large Beowolf Winter spawned, but Winter has years more practice and skill so she wins a pyrrhic victory. The Knight gets slashed to death but it impaled the Beowolf with its sword. She criticizes Weiss’ technique, but it turns into a backhanded compliment that she’s made her sloppy moves a part of how she fights and makes them work for her. Weiss recognizes that’s her sister’s way of showing approval, and calls her out on being nice like that. The elder sister is mortified that her stern attitude has been called into question, but she calms down and acknowledges that Weiss has grown a lot during their time apart, she’s confident enough to make jabs like that and stand up to Dad. Winter is proud her sister has found her own independence and has made her own kinder worldview, since her own leaving the Schnee name behind was the best thing that ever happened to her. They can carve their own path together, though she still thinks Ironwood’s side is the best place to be with that path. Weiss is skeptical since she knows a bit more than the General about Salem and all that, and she doesn’t like the way the kingdom has become under his leadership, what he has let it become. Winter assures her this downward spiral is temporary and the satellite will fix everything, Ironwood is doing some tough things but it’s what he feels is right. Weiss had to deal with Ozpin keeping world shattering secrets and leading them on a deadman’s quest because he thought that would keep his self interests and plans on track, so even if she doesn’t admit that much she’s openly more skeptical. Winter stands firm that Ironwood wouldn’t keep secrets from her, but Weiss calls her on that. Can she be sure?
This is enough to spurn Winter into making a decision, to lead Weiss to the depths of Atlas Academy, through the facilities and labs and past a secure access door... to a viewing room. Overlooking a room where an old woman is resting in a hospital bed. There’s a sink and some cupboards, some paintings on the wall and an easel next to the bed, and a few medical pods on the left side of the room while the bed is on the right surrounded by health readout screens. The bedridden Winter Maiden was a painter. Oddly enough, the pictures on the wall seem to be concept art from the credits of the last few Volumes: the aquatic market in Menagerie, the Mistral train station, and the cave overlooking the forest where Nora and Ren found the Nuckelavee’s spoils of war are the ones I can recognize at the moment, but I’m sure the other 2 have relevance. But enough with the small details, let’s address the Goliath in the room. Winter has been personally attending to the Winter Maiden, named Fria, in her final days, how appropriate. In fact, that’s the plan. Winter will literally be the next Winter Maiden, so she’s the only person Fria is allowed to interact with so she can be the last person she thinks about when she dies. Which could be any day now. But I can smell a monkey wrench a mile away and there are a few that could be thrown into this plan. Fria is a very Norse sounding name so it’s possible she’s related to Nora and she could think of her in her last moments, the granddaughter she laments she may never see again after they parted so many years ago. Or if some grand attack comes to Atlas and Winter is otherwise engaged, Weiss will be the only one who knows to come bring Fria to safety and the worst might strike leaving one of our main 4 as a Maiden. All I’m saying is, there could be a lot that goes wrong. But for the moment, Winter is ready to take on this responsibility even if it seems like a dick move of Jimmy to have her volun-told to be next in line. But she calls back to Weiss’ growth and accepting what she can’t control. Her entire military career may have been a paved road to this outcome, but she’ll still make her own choices along the way and be the Maiden her way to make a real difference in the world with these powers. It’s not for Ironwood or their Father’s sake, but for herself.
Unfortunately, speaking of Father and doing things your own way, Jacques holds a press conference to proclaim how Ironwood’s embargo have caused everyone to suffer equally, himself included. That’s a load of garbage, he’s just moody that he’s 5% less rich and dropping. But he also announces that he will be closing down every SDC owned business that isn’t Dust mining and refining. It’s a “necessary measure” with how the embargo is effecting businesses and making it supposedly nonviable for those businesses to stay open and still be effective. Another lie, he just doesn’t want to have more money leaving his pocket as employee wages. This is clearly part of the strategy Watts suggested to him, keep as many doors closed as possible so he can horde the wealth he still has while spinning it to be Ironwood’s fault. He comes off as another victim doing what is necessary so people don’t hate him directly for it and he can win voter support. And it’s not like Robyn Hill can do anything to make the SDC give people their jobs back, so why vote for her? It’s a seemingly perfect plan, as infuriating as that is to admit. And it sure sets off the people of Mantle, as they start a riot in the streets. Guess our good boys and girls will have to deal with that some time soon.
A whole lot to think about while we wait for next weekend’s episode. But it was still a very good chapter in my opinion. What did you think?
