au where jeff’s only a little older than todd and todd and jeff have a close relationship so todd’s over at welton every now and then and he meets neil (i know this is like 80% of my jeff anderson aus and 75% of my precanon anderperry aus but bear with me)
neil’s gets a big fat crush on him and ya know
he hangs out with todd whenever he’s there and he kinda knows jeff now too only becuz of that
so one day he’s there, doodling in his notebook (”neil anderson”) and someone sees it and like its not like todd’s a student here
he only comes now and then to hang out iwht his brother for like 5 minutes and then get whisked away by neil
so they just see anderson and rumor spreads that neil’s got a thing for jeff and it gets back to the jeff anderson and jeff’s like ‘wait im like a solid 3% sure my brother’s got a thing for neil so i need to not only turn neil down but also guide him towards todd’
so jeff spends days upon days trying to hint to neil that there’s a better anderson for him
and like neil’s so confused as to whats going on
and he talks to charlie about it and charlie’s confused to becuz like both of them really just see jeff as todd’s (or neil’s crush's) older brother so the idea that jeff thinks that neil could like him doesn’t even cross his mind
and in the end todd comes over and hears that neil’s got a thing for an anderson and at first he’s like ‘omg what if its jeff’ but then he’s like ‘omg what if its me’ and he’s like how do i find this out
so its just a long long time of neil trying to confess to todd, todd trying to figure out which anderson neil likes, and jeff trying to turn neil down whilst also setting him up with his brother
its a mess

saw a poll asking how may years apart they thought todd was from jeff, the common answer being either three or four and whilst i agree this is true or somewhat true i have my own theory.
the boy's spoke of jeff like they knew him, like he was a legacy, but a legacy heard of, like they were there to watch him become valedictorian.
if you get where this is going?
they sent todd to a different school on purpose.
my theory is that because the boy's are seventeen, and todd was starting during the new school year, jeff can't be just a year older than him. they way his parents spoke of him, and the way they treated todd like a child, he was clearly older.
this could be from no older than five years honestly, but still old enough to wedge some type of gap between the two. (this is why i saw more like four or five years - just stay with me though).
they sent todd to a different school on purpose.
why do i think this you may be asking?
we know from neil's dad that the schools pretty pricey, we also know that todds parents have the money, just not for him.
they sent jeff to the best of the best, and whilst he could've been going there since before he was even double digits, they didn't. they didn't until after jeff had left, todd probably didn't want to go at first, and honestly, they didn't care because they got to focus on jeff.

I always believed that when Neil and Todd get together, the poets and Mr. Keating are the ones to know first. Though they didn't tell Mr. Keating directly, he just knew from the way the dynamic between the two had changed, only for a slight, but it's damning evidence to know that they're finally together.
And Mr. Keating was elated of course, knowing how much those two make each other better.
Charlie knew first, which was unsurprising due to the fact that the night after they confessed to each other, Charlie barged into their room and saw them both cuddling in Neil's bed. He decides to let you two rest for a little longer, though that's the only recluse he'll give from the barrage of teases that the two will get from him.
After months in the relationship Todd, surprisingly confessed to Jeff about his relationship with Neil. Both knew that on Neil's side, he had no one to confide in, his father being a bastard and his mother who might be supportive but the fear of her telling her husband was too much of a risk they were not gonna take.
And then Todd called Jeff, who was surprised at the call. Sure they'd been trying to mend their distance for the past months after he visited, but it was surprising that it was Todd who called first.
"Hello! This is Jeff Anderson speaking, who is it?"
"Hey Jeff."
"Oh Todd, what a pleasant surprise." It really was Jeff notes. But he did take notice of how his brother's voice seemed nervous, hopefully, he didn't get into trouble like getting expelled.
"I need to tell you something, uh I haven't told our parents about it and I wanted you to know first."
To say Jeff was touched by that was an understatement, it meant that all the time they tried to work it out slowly doing their thing, and if Todd has something to tell him that he trusts him enough to tell him. He would deny a stray tear falling from his cheeks from the emotions he's feeling though.
"Alright what is it, Todd?" He asked in a soft tone. Then remembers something and adds, "And don't worry, not a word from this call will get to Mom and Dad"
He could hear a sigh of relief from the other side which means he said the right thing, and thank god for him thinking ahead.
"So you know Neil right?" That made Jeff's eyebrows raise.
"Your roommate, your best friend?" He chuckles at the thought. "How could I not you speak of him in every call we had." He teases and he could hear the groan from the other side making him smile wider.
"Ugh, Jeff not now."
"Fine fine, so what's with Neil?"
"So umm..." There was a second of silence on the other side Jeff thought the line was cut, but then it comes back later. "well... me and him..."
Jeff knew he had to be patient even if he was, if he's honest, wants Todd to tell him already, but he doesn't wanna destroy their progress, they've talked about this already.
"MeandNeilaredatingnow."
It was surprisingly quick that Jeff had to double-take. That was the fastest he heard Todd talk and he didn't understand any of it.
"What?"
Hear Todd taking a breath before he spoke. "Me and Neil are dating." "Oh." Jeff said, surprised at the news but somehow a part of him was not as surprised as he thought? Or maybe it's because he thought something bad had happened and knowing it was not downplayed his reaction to it. "I thought he was expelled or something." It slipped on his mouth before he could think of it. "Jeeeeefff." He could hear Todd groan from the other side, though he knows the other is scared stiff at what his reaction will be.
To be frank Jeff, unlike most of the fathers in Vermont, he's not one to believe that a man loving another man or a woman loving another woman is a sin. Frankly, he believes that love is love whatever gender it is. And that's not gonna change now with Todd.
"I'm happy for you Todd, I really am."
"Really?"
"Yeah!" Jeff couldn't help but smile. "I know it must've been hard just trying to tell me and I'm proud of you." He really was, and hearing the sigh of relief from the other made his heart swell.
"Thank you Jeff." He hears Todd say.
"Oh no need to thank me, and we could talk about it more when I visit this weekend. I think this talk requires us to talk face-to-face right? Plus I wanna talk to Neil too."
He hears Todd groan. "Don't tell me-"
"Yes, he's gonna get the big brother talk."
"Jeff!"
"I know he's a big help to you but this is different since you're in a relationship now." Jeff said donning his big brother voice, as he calls it.
"Alright Alright, we'll continue this talk when you arrive," Todd said before a lapse of silence befalls both of them.
"I'm happy for you."
"Thanks, Jeff."
And the two spoke of their days before hanging up, a promise to talk more when he arrives at Welton this weekend.

@inahallucination JEFF CRUMBS, also gonna write a part 2 just writing Jeff's 'big brother talk' to Neil is already funny in my mind"

jeffrey anderson is a GOOD fucking big brother. he is definitely not perfect, and he was far from it when he was attending welton and todd was in elementary/middle school, but overall, he’s a good brother.
i feel like as they get older, jeffrey realizes that todd is the only family he can rely on to be completely honest with him, and that will love him unconditionally. he always knew this as they were close as children, but time and their parents stressed the small cracks that started forming in their relationship.
by the time todd is at welton, jeffrey tries to call him at least once a week. some calls are short, while some leave todd hogging the phone (and subsequently making the welton phone bill skyrocket) for an hour.
todd appreciated the change in pace, especially when he ran away with neil. he was glad that he had someone in his corner that approved of him and neil.
and support them jeff did. he did everything from covering for them, to coming to neil’s plays and todd’s poetry readings, to treating neil like a true brother in law, to even just acting like that’s how it’s supposed to be: neil and todd against the world together.
jeffrey has enough common sense to realize that todd is the only family member that he has that he can fully rely on. and despite the fact that their parents are shit bags and don’t appreciate him, he’ll highlight the fact that todd is just as important as he is in everything he does by loving his brother.
or maybe i’m just projecting my sibling feelings because i see a bunch of stuff of jeffrey being a jerk to todd and it hurts me cause i could never be a jerk to my sister ahhhh.
