chag sameach and happy chuseok!
This year, for the first time ever, I built a sukkah. It was tough. I'm not going to lie, even doing it on the cheap it was expensive. There was a lot of hot, hard work.
But I am so, so proud of myself.
I put in the effort to make sure my kids have access to both of their cultures through me, and then I got a shady hut to sit in this last week. I also am making sure to be visibly, loudly, publicly all my selves, so another queer, neurodivergent, mixed race Asian Jew out there knows they aren't the only one.
For those who don't know, Sukkot is a Jewish harvest-time festival celebrating the harvest with some ancestor veneration. It's not a big deal holiday anymore, but it was one of the three pilgrimage festivals during Temple times. I've seen lovely photos of streets in eretz yisrael lined with many sukkot. Chuseok is a Korean harvest-time festival celebrating the harvest with some ancestor veneration. It's not such a big deal holiday anymore, but many people still use it as a time to travel and spend time with living relatives. I hear tell of planes and hotels being booked out for months and traffic being horrendous as people roadtrip to childhood or ancestral hometowns.
Here's some photos of mixed race Jewish Korean queer joy. If you follow the link at the bottom, you can watch the video with voiceover on my instagram. (I could download the video, but because I added the theme from Practical Magic behind my words instagram wouldn't let me download my own voice.)
Come with me and enjoy!
Image description: a light skinned mixed race person with dark hair and eyes, large dark green glasses, a white kerchief, and a light blue jeogori with dark blue collar and cuffs and white dongjeong smiles at the camera, gesturing with one hand upwards and back to the grass fence sukkah wall behind them.
Image description: building the sukkah. A series of five shots, the first two with the person described above wearing a long sleeve green tee and a striped buff straw sunhat on a cloudless sunny day. They use white cotton twine to stitch reed fencing to a metal pop up tent frame, with the top lowered to waist height. The third shot, without people, shows the roof completed and raised to useable height, with flowering bougainvillea and white oleander in the background against a cloudless blue sky. The fourth shot shows the sukkah with walls and an orange outdoor extension cord going into the sukkah. The top has more schach of flowering bougainvillea, pyracantha with orange berries, and an olive-like ornamental covering the roof under the metal frame point. The last shot, at night, shows the interior of the sukkah with a round outdoor table and four patio chairs with cushions inside. Sandbags hold the corners of the sukkah, and a large blue tapestry with a combined sun and moon is pinned to the back wall. Outdoor lights are strung so the sukkah interior glows brightly against the dark night.
Making songpyeon! Songpyeon are as important to Chuseok as a hanukkiah is to Xanike or a seder is to Pesach. They are two to three bite rice cakes traditionally stuffed with sesame seeds, pine nuts, beans, or chestnuts, mixed with honey. They are steamed on pine needles to make a sweet, earthy, chewy treat. I wanted to buy them, but nowhere locally sells them. The white and purple are from our first batch, and the decorated green and purple are from batches six and seven. We had seven batches in 48 hours, and I am grateful my preschooler has been getting plenty of playdough time at school - they were really good at making songpyeon!
A note on togetherness: it is traditional to make songpyeon at home together. I have many memories of the work and stress that went in to pulling off picture-perfect holidays, and while the photographed objects are perfect, the smiles never reach our eyes. I committed to making ugly art and focusing my energy on enjoying time with my four and one year old. I want their foundational memories to be enjoying time together, not me screaming at them to make perfect edible art. It was only on the last batch, when we had an empty afternoon stretching out before us, that we tried some more beautiful candies. I think they turned out great.
The white are plain, the purple is made with blueberry juice, and the green with green tea powder. We stuffed ours with a mix of honeyed pine nuts, honeyed white sesame seeds, and honeyed black sesame seeds. We also made a batch tinted rosy brown with beetroot powder.
Image description. Set of seven photos showing songpyeon being made. The first three show a plate with measured but unstuffed pieces, shaped pieces, and the same person as above in a black shirt, black apron, and teal tichel using a spoon to stuff a white songpyeon with sesame seeds. These all sit on a table with a large print of orange fruits, leaves, and flowers. The songpyeon are white and purple. Below that is a set of four images with green and purple songpyeon decorated with purple and green flowers to leaves. They are simple in design. The first two show the paler, uncooked pieces sitting on cloth liners and pine needles in a bamboo steamer basket on the table, and the last two are steamy shots showing the cooked pieces, now darker, still in the steamer basket in the pot on the stove.
Some shots of the sukkah just before the triple holiday started: Chuseok, Sukkot, and Shabbat. After all the work I did (plus baking our challah), we got takeout for dinner.
Our lulav is not standard. We don't have an etrog, but a very special lemon our friends grew and gifted us the harvesting thereof. The palm came from our home, and the willow from our friends,' but instead of myrtle I opted for redwood branches (also from our friends' home). These are similarly fragrant, grow in sets of three, and were foragable by me and the baby close to home. I believe there is a balance to be found between traditional observance, and localized observance. It's not right for everyone, but it is right for me and my family.
The table with with shabbat candlesticks and food is our jesa table. Jesa is an ancestor veneration ceremony in which food and bows are offered to the ancestors. They consume the energy from the food, and leave their blessings behind. When we consume the food, we receive the blessings. For more on traditional Korean practices, I recommend popping over to instagram to follow Mudang Mia, Mudang Jenn (who has a free digital magazine), and Mudang Seo Choi (who regularly has kickstarters for books!).
Image description. Four shots of the sukkah interior, showcasing the food. First shot shows a table set for two adults and two children, with printed homemade colouring books at each child's place setting, The table has a blue tablecloth, three takeout boxes of food, a takeout container of fried rice, a small floral arrangement, a challah wrapped in a red and gold cover with bees woven in, a bottle of de-alcoholized red wine, a bottle of pomegranate juice, a large jar of lemon water, and takeout containers for soup. The second shot is the same set but pulled back and showing the whole interior so the lulav table relative to eating table is visible. The third shot is a very narrow table with a blue cloth printed with smiling white suns on it. It has two glass shabbat candlesticks, a package of beeswax candles, a stack of five coconut jellies, chopsticks, and a plate with homemade songpyeon in white, rosy brown, and purple, white mochi with red bean paste, and three cylindrical puffed rice snacks. The fourth shot is of the lemon and lulav bundle as described above. The lulav is wrapped and tied with white cotton twine.
Bonus: the video I made, with voiceover available on instagram.
You aren't alone.
moadim l'simcha.
Image description: a twig with flowering pomegranate in various stages for seven buds and blossoms total. It has a large white circle behind. Collaged on top are three rounds of moon cycles, spiraling in towards the center in black.

Jesa and Hark
First time actually writing something like this ‘cause drawing this is going to take a lot...please don’t judge so hard and hope someone likes it...
Jesa, looking at the sunset, sad and lost in her thoughts when Hark appears behind her “hey!” He says with a handsome smile.
She blushes just for hearing him “you!?”
“Me!” smiles, but he sees her expression, not the girl he saw at the play “what’s wrong?”
“I saw your play...I really liked it. You’re very talented” she avoids his green eyes.
“Thanks, I have a few charms here and there... but that’s not what’s eating you, right?”
“No...the nuns always says Ba Sing Se is a dangerous place, so different from the way we live, but you’re from Ba Sing Se right? Your play was full of colors and joy and excitement! All we do at the temple is meditation and that Yangchen festival every year...”
“Oh... I think I understand. You’re bored of your current life, you need something new. We all have one of those moments from time to time”
“You think?”
“Hah, of course! I got them all the time. If you want, you can come with me I can show you some tricks to add some spice to your life” he extends his hand “is what i do when im sad”
“...ok...” she grabs his hand and they walk to the town avoiding certain places. Jesa didn’t knew why, but she played along.
Soon it was night and they were waiting outside of a mansion “what are we doing here?”
“I’ve been paid to retrieve something from here, nothing personal”
“You’re stealing the house!”
“Hush! Don’t yell... let’s call it high risk trading”
“D-does your friends know about this?”
“No... they don’t need to, but is fun. Stay behind me and nothing will go wrong”
“No, this is bad. This is not the right way”
“Alright, I’m not forcing you to do it. I thought... since you needed some excitement...” he gives her a charming smile.
Jesa looks away blushing, she looks at the sky and the stars. She was going to do probably what not air nomad had done ever, betray her culture, everything she knew, her own people.
“So...? What are you going to do?”
“Let’s do it!” But it was going to be just one time and she wasn’t going to steal anything right?
“Alright!”
They entered the mansion with his earthbending and inside everything was shiny, there were lots of gold and jade and valuable stuff. Jesa has never seen so much gold in her life. She noticed he was looking for something specific ignoring everythingelse except for some tiny golden objects “I’m Hark by the way”
“Jesa” they whispered
“Uuu I like that name, quick and simple, what does it means?”
“I don’t know!” She was nervous and grabbed his arm “hurry up!”
“Relax, here it is” he picked up a monkey figure that had ruby as eyes “take it”
“What? Why?”
“It doesn’t count if you don’t take it”
She grabs the monkey in a hurry “is heavy”
“Because is worth a lot”
“HEY!” A man appeared at the door “THIEVES!”
“Run!” Harks grabs her by the hand and they both run as fast as they could. Hark raised a wall and they found themselves outside of the mansion looking down at the bushes “we’re gonna need some of your airbending to have a smooth landing!”
“I’m on it!” They both jumped and Jesa smoothed the fall with air. Hark got up quickly and took her in his arms, she could never knew that was posible, with her height a normal person would’ve struggled to picked her up that easily, she smiled “this is great!”
“I told you!”
They ran until they got to where the nuns were staying, it was almost morning “so? How was it?”
“I want to do it again” she said holding the monkey “I felt free...like..like I was alive again!”
“Huh, you surprise me more and more. Well... if you’re ever around again you know where to find me...” he took the money and gave her a golden ring “to remember me by”
“Wait...” she grabbed him by the hand “take me with you”
“Why?” He looked surprised, more surprised that before.
“My life is dull, even if I love the nuns at the temple and our culture, I’m not doing anything, I feel like I’m slowly dying without really enjoying life... my only life. I’m no Avatar, I have to live this life to the fullest and you have show me that tonight, please take me with you...”
“Jesa if I do so, there will be no going back, my life is more dangerous and risky and you’re so innocent and beautiful. I’m a criminal, I cannot lead you to a life of uncertainty and distress”
“Yes! please do so! I want that, I want to wake up not knowing what my day is going to be, please, I want to be with you, I don’t care what you are, you’re not like anyone I’ve ever met”
By the time the nuns where getting ready, Jesa’s tent was empty with no note nor her supplies. They looked for her flying bison, Longyan, but by that time she was very far away in the sky with Hark by her side not knowing what her day was going to be.

The Rise of Kyoshi - Names
This little article is my own collection of the translation of names in The Rise of Kyoshi. Unlike the comics or the cartoon, the book about Avatar Kyoshi never officially give any name written in Chinese character(kanji/hanzi), and as the Chinese avatar-wiki being established and the novel being translated, we privately choose certain translations.
I am Chinese and only familiar with English and Japanese, and the worry of getting these names wrong bothers me. This article is also for you guys to give suggestions.
Jianzhu 坚竹
Mandarin. To match the Gravedigger’s nickname, Jianzhu (建筑)means ‘the architecture’ /’the building’. However, that is not an appropriate name in east Asian culture. The Chinese characters we chose literally means ‘the tenacious bamboo’, and further gave him the characteristic of nobleness and ambitiousness.
Hei-Ran 喜然
Cantonese/Mandarin. The romanization of this name led me into thinking this is from Mandarin. But the sound ‘Hei’ means nothing positive and can only be used in a name as ‘darkness/ black’(黑). So we chose Cantonese and write it as ‘happiness/joy/jubilation’. The whole name means ‘the look of happiness’. Also the form ‘…-Ran’ (~然) is common in Chinese girls’ names. Her husband Junsik’s name(君思) is also translated according to both Cantonese and Mandarin.
Later I was informed by @kkachi95 that her name could be Korean, but when I translated her name I didn’t know that.
Kelsang 凯申
Tibetan. Once I realized Air Nomads’ names are basically all Tibetan (Tenzin, etc), Kelsang is the easiest to go. There have been fixed translation to Tibetan names for ages. I looked the name up on the Internet and I was told that Kelsang means ‘the past/ yesterday’, but I’m not sure. The other fixed translation (格桑) also represents a unique flower in Tibet aka ‘the flower of happiness’.
Kyoshi 虚子
Japanese. The written form was given in the cartoon.
I would especially mumble something about Kyoshi. The hanzi ‘虚’ has several meanings in Chinese. Emptiness, illusions, unconfident, timid shy, and ‘in vain’, and the suffix ‘~子’is used in Chinese to great philosopher(e.g. Confucius), which is very interesting. Anyway that is all over-interpretation cause it is Japanese, lol.
Rangi 燃姬
Mandarin. The lady in flames. The princess on fire.
The book author F. C. Yee explained that this name is from Korean word of tigress ‘horangi’ that could not be written to hanzi in this meaning. According to some dictionary, the name Rangi could be written as ‘like the sunshine’(朗伊), but we decided not to use that meaning.
Yun 筠
Mandarin. At first we decided to write it as ‘cloud’(云) or ‘harmony’(韵) but eventually we chose ‘the green skin of bamboo’. Considered that Yun’s virtues and characteristics, this name implying ‘such a gentlemen’(有匪君子) is the smallest preference I could give him. There is also this old saying that ‘without its skin, the bamboo dies’.
Lu Beifong 北方禄
Mandarin. Fortune.
Xu Ping An 许平安
Mandarin. Promise you with your well-being and without mishap.
Jesa 芥刹
Mandarin. The small being in the world and one instant of time.
Hark 鹤
Southeast China dialects. Crane.
Yuan Zhen 元稹
Mandarin. There was actually a famous poet named Yuan Zhen in history. In the novel, Hei-Ran was praised that she was like from Yuan Zhen’s love poem, but in real life, Yuan Zhen’s most wide spreading love poem are his tribute to his late wife.
Here are some translated poem from Yuan Zhen.
Thinking of my dear departed
No water’s wide enough when you have crossed the sea;
No cloud is beautiful but tat which crowns the peak.
I pass by flowers which fail to attract por me
Half for your sake and half for Taoism I speak.
To my deceased wife (the third)
Sitting idle, I grieve for myself as for you.
How many days are left of my declining years?
Another childless man fared better than I do;
Another widower lavished vain verse and tears.
Could I await a better fate than our same tomb.
Could you be born again and again be my wife?
With eyes unclosed all night long I’ll be in the gloom
To repay you fir your unknit brow in your life.
The other names (Kirima, Lek, Wang, etc) will be added later.
I’m open to any suggestions and discussion and willing to help if you have any question about how to write a Hanzi name.
Chiu-mi!
