📖 A new bill will provide millions of children in CA with free books thanks to Dolly Parton

A new bill signed into law will now provide millions of children in California with free books thanks to Dolly Parton.

The bill, SB 1183, was signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom and will provide funding for Parton’s “Imagination Library” program, providing free books to children from birth to 5 years old.

Aiming to encourage preschool children to develop an early love of reading and learning, the bill received bipartisan support in both houses.

🦁 Pride of lions airlifted from Ukraine to Colorado in “biggest-ever warzone rescue of lions”

A pride of lions that were living at the Bio Park Zoo in Odessa, a southern city in Ukraine that has been impacted by the Russian-Ukraine war, has been airlifted to the Wild Animal Sanctuary in Colorado, according to a news release.

“The big cats were urgently relocated when the war first broke by a convoy that journeyed over 600 miles across Ukraine and Moldova, arriving in Targu Mures, Romania, on May 24, 2022. The Targu Mures Zoo provided a temporary home for the animals for several months so that an emergency travel permit could be approved for the eleven lions to board an international rescue flight,” the release said.

🐶 Hundreds of Dogs Saved From Nevada Breeding Farm in Huge Police Operation

Authorities have seized around 300 dogs from a property in Nevada in what officials have described as a “large-scale” animal cruelty situation. Detectives from Nye County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) obtained a search warrant for a property in Amargosa Valley following an investigation and visited the location on Tuesday.

There, officials arrested a couple — Oskana Higgins and Vasili Platunov — on felony animal abuse and neglect charges, the NCSO said.

☄️ Nasa’s Dart spacecraft ‘changed path of asteroid’

Scientists have now confirmed the orbit of a 160m-wide (520ft) space rock known as Dimorphos was altered when the Dart probe struck it head on last month. Researchers came to the conclusion after making measurements using a range of space and Earth-based telescopes.

The mission was conceived to test a potential strategy to defend the Earth against threatening objects.

🤖 Tiny Robots Have Successfully Cleared Pneumonia From The Lungs of Mice

Scientists have been able to direct a swarm of microscopic swimming robots to clear out pneumonia microbes in the lungs of mice, raising hopes that a similar treatment could be developed to treat deadly bacterial pneumonia in humans. The technology is still at a proof-of-concept stage, but the early signs are very promising.

“Based on this mouse data, we see that the microrobots could potentially improve antibiotic penetration to kill bacterial pathogens and save more patients’ lives,” says Victor Nizet, a physician and professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego.

When Jessica Wade was invited to Buckingham Palace to receive the prestigious British Empire Medal, she stood out for being a young woman honored for her contributions to science.

Ironically, she was being honored for trying to change that.

The 33-year-old London-based physicist has become something of a phenomenon herself — both an irresistible force and immoveable object — in her very personal campaign to bring more girls to study and work in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

Wade has written more than 1,600 Wikipedia entries for long-ignored women scientists, and she has firm beliefs on ideas on how to support girls interested in the field.

Wade gained notice when, still in her 20s, she began writing the Wikipedia biographies about women and minority scientists who never got their due — from employers, from other scientists, from the public.

As her Wikipedia entries climbed into the dozens, and then into the hundreds, she spoke and wrote more on gender equality in science. She won awards and medals and was cited by Jimmy Wales, the founder of Wikipedia.

However, not all of Wiki-world was happy with her. Several of her entries were deleted by other Wikimedians, as the most influential contributors and editors are called. She told TODAY.com that they said a handful of the women she wrote up were not all that well-known.

Wade said that’s right, that’s the problem: they should be better known.

One example was Clarice Phelps. Wade heard about the young African-American nuclear chemist, and wrote a Wikipedia bio describing her work on a team that discovered a new periodic-table element at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The Phelps entry bounced on and off Wikipedia as critics deleted it and Wade defended it. In the end, Wade won, and Phelps’ entry is back on Wikipedia for good.

Meanwhile, Wade’s own Wikipedia entry — written by others, not her — has grown to 10 printed pages. 

As Wade pursues her effort to make sure women scientists are known, she also has beliefs on how to make sure the next generation gets the support they need. 

She said girls don’t need “whiz-bang” experiments at school assemblies: visiting scientists do their show, pack up, depart and nothing changes. Instead, girls and students of color need to be coached and mentored on what to study, and when.

“People assume girls don’t choose science because they’re not inspired,” Wade, 33, said in a recent interview. “Girls are already interested. It’s more about making students aware of the different careers in science and getting parents and teachers on board.”

Women make up only 28 percent of the U.S. work force in STEM, according to the American Association of University Women, and only one in five current engineering or computer science majors are women. Women in STEM earn $60,000 a year, compared to $85,000 for men, according to the American Association of University Women, a non-profit organization that focuses on equity for women. 

“Ultimately, we don’t only need to increase the number of girls choosing science, we need to increase the proportion of women who stay in science,” said Wade, whose doctorate research at Imperial College in London has been widely cited for advances in digital display technology for TV, computer and phone screens.

One key, she said, is better high school science teachers. “We’re suffering a huge shortage of skills-specialist science teachers across the U.S. and the U.K.,” she said.

Wade said schools should make it easier for girls and students of color to apply for admissions, grants, fellowships and promotions.

“What do you need to do? Who do you need to speak to? When do you need to make that application? Who should be your cheerleader or supporter?”

She believes schools need to be upfront about their policies on bullying and sexual harassment; universities must provide affordable child care on campus; and conference organizers should provide day care and grants for those with caring responsibilities.

Wade, who grew up the daughter of two physicians and had supportive teachers at private schools, realized at a young age that most people were not as lucky.

“I genuinely believe that science is better when it’s done by diverse teams,” she said.

“It’s also important because we’re designing new technologies or new scientific solutions to global problems, we want the teams of people creating them to reflect the societies that they’re serving.”

“Even if you don’t care about any of that, the world desperately needs more scientists and engineers,” Wade added. “Science can help solve the world’s biggest challenges — climate change, antibiotic resistance, emerging pandemic-inducing viruses.”

Looking back on her inclusion in the late Queen Elizabeth’s 2019 Birthday Honours list, Wade hopes young women scientists will become commonplace at future ceremonies.

And she hopes they will enjoy it as much as she did.

“It was pretty wild to be honored by the royal family,” Wade recalled. She didn’t meet the queen, but she did take along her mother, Dr. Charlotte Feinmann, to Buckingham Palace.

Her father, Dr. John Wade, couldn’t attend, but Jess Wade did her best to make it up to him.

“I took a Tupperware,” she confided, “to sneak some royal sandwiches home to my dad.”

writing Dune fanfiction is like. ok. well it’s two things for me.

one: i have an excuse to speedrun the kind of reading about various cultures that Frank Herbert did (and to follow in his footsteps where they’re known to me — The Sabres of Paradise doesn’t offer a lot of information relevant to what I want to write about, but it is a good book). which is stressful because i’m dumb, but also haha yay excuse to be inspired by whatever the fuck cool thing i saw on wikipedia

two: Frank Herbert gave himself a grade-A out for any aspect of Fremen culture he wanted to take any non-Fremen character by surprise: unlike presumably most other planets in the Imperium, Dune lacks satellite coverage. so you can bullshit there being almost anything in the southern hemisphere, because no one’s keeping track of that shit from space. and the previous controllers of the planet dismissed the Fremen so completely that you can make up quite a lot about their culture to your liking, because only a handful of offworlders get close enough to see sietch life. (like… we know of four or five, and of those only Pardot Kynes, Paul, and Jessica are truly accepted into the culture.) basically you can just make up whatever you please and then say “oh, no one knew about that before now because the Fremen are so secretive”. there’s even a retroactive escape to this: any detail about Fremen life that appears in the sequels to Dune describes a way of life that is rapidly changing, and thus it may not apply to events in and prior to Dune. tl;dr: i have the ability to say “nah it’s not really like that” about anything i want

(i’m slowly chewing back through an essay series by a historian/blogger whose work i enjoy, about where the whole “hard times create strong men!!!” trope that Frank Herbert believed in falls apart — what i want to tackle in my own amateur way is basically “Fremen society cannot actually function according to these rules, because human societies don’t work that way — what would i need to add to create a long-term-functional society?”)

Whaou.

Je regarde beaucoup de séries, et j’en ai vu un paquet de super bien. Cette fois, avec cette celle-ci, j’ai été touchée en plein cœur. Pourtant, je connais à peine Truman Capote, je n’ai rien lu de lui, j’ignorais tout de cette querelle dont il est question dans ce récit qui raconte la deuxième partie de sa vie. Je connaissais son visage, sa réputation sulfureuse, son intérêt pour les mondains, et l’impact de son roman De sang froid.

Honnêtement, je n’aurais pas cru me passionner pour son existence ni pour celles des « Swans », c’est à dire ces « socialities », célébrités mondaines pleines aux as et oisives au possible, qui faisaient la pluie et le beau temps sur la mode à New-York dans les années 60 et 70. D’ailleurs, il me semble bien qu’on les a oubliées. Elles ont leurs fiches Wikipedia, mais je ne suis pas sûre qu’elles aient laissé une trace inouïe ni dans l’art, ni dans la mode.

C’est Gus Van Sant qui filme, et sans doute la qualité de la série y est pour beaucoup. Le casting est dingue aussi, entre Naomi Watts, Calista Flockart, Chloë Sevigny, Jessica Lange… et Tom Hollander qui incarne Capote d’une façon extraordinaire. Il a réussi à créer un personnage à la fois ridicule et profondément touchant, avec ses cheveux jaunes plaqués sur un front de plus en plus dégarni, une gestuelle maniérée et outrée, une voix haut perchée, et un rire incroyable… irritant et désarmant. Une performance géniale, proche de l’original (j’ai regardé des vidéos pour écouter la vraie voix de l’auteur), et une création sensible.

La première partie de la vie de l’écrivain, de sa jeunesse chaotique (mère sans égards, puis alcoolique, père violent puis absent), à son succès précoce, est sacrément passionnante (maintenant que je suis renseignée). Mais la série se concentre sur l’après. Lorsque, précisément, Truman Capote est à son apogée, et que tout le monde s’arrache cet homosexuel mondain qui est drôle, cruel, attentif et doux avec ceux (celles surtout) qu’il aime. Sa relation avec Babe m’a bouleversée. J’ai pleuré tout le long de l’avant-dernier épisode, devant la beauté de leur lien, devant le tragique du gâchis.

Cette série est évidemment complètement proustienne, avec l’œil acéré sur les faux-semblants des riches, les amitiés qui n’empêchent pas la clairvoyance, la cruauté de ladite clairvoyance lorsque celle-ci se mue en récit public et donc en trahison. Il est question de mondes dont on veut être ; dont Capote devient le centre puis en est évincé. De solitude. D’alcool. De création. De l’attirance du papillon vers l’ampoule qui va le brûler, le petit garçon esseulé d’Alabama ébloui par le faste new-yorkais, puis les talk-shows. Et le fantôme maternel qui rôde, encore, qui empoisonne chacun de ses gestes.

C’est le récit d’un déclin collectif, mais dans lequel chacun est seul. C’est troublant de finesse, de délicatesse. Malgré les belles robes, les colliers de perles et les mets raffinés, il y a quelque chose de nu qui transparaît, quelque chose de cru, de vrai où se mélange les regrets d’un gâchis immense et la beauté impalpable de moments dérisoires. Une vie, à la fin de laquelle on appelle en vain sa maman, comme un petit enfant effrayé.

First impression: literally THEE reason i watched arrested development. a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away(march 2018 at my dad’s house) someone i followed on here on a now-deleted blog was reblogging a whole bunch of pictures of alia shawkat and i was like god she’s so hot what is she in…so i went on her wikipedia page, obviously saw arrested development listed, clicked on it, thought it seemed like my type of show, continued clicking, clicked on jessica walter, recognized her from all the memes, and was like oh i Have to watch this now. and the rest is history

I've never seen Daredevil in my life (i know I know it's ridiculous especially when I've seen Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and the Defenders) so the little I know of him is through The Defenders and She-Hulk and the pilot episode. A little some second hand knowledge from people here and fandom Wikipedia too.

But I have a story idea, and I haven't seen any one try to write it yet so far. Too many people wanna fuck Matt Murdock, i guess, which is completely understandable.

I'll probably write it, but I would love someone more experienced in writing fan fiction to do it.

Anyway.

It's just the idea of being in love with Matt Murdock since meeting in college, but him constantly choosing Elektra.

Main character has been friends with Foggy and Matt since college. More Foggy's friend than Matt, but since those two are attached at the hip, Matt becomes a dear friend too. There's an attraction between the two that eventually ends up with them dating during their time in uni. It's casual and fun, and the Main Character is so into Matt, and there's a huge possibility they'll finally take the next step and become serious. Like a proper serious relationship.

Until Elektra shows up. Matt likes the main character, a lot, but Elektra makes him feel like he's flying. She was someone who he can fully be himself. Someone who also embraces his dark side. Main character only knew Matt, the cute and snarky blind guy. The main character agrees to break up, convincing themselves that they didn't date long enough for this to be such a big deal. And for a bit, things are awkward in their friend group, but the MC gets over it. They start to date, other people.

And then Elektra leaves. And while MC and Matt don't try to date again, the dynamic is almost how it used to be. They don't really flirt with each other anymore because there are protocols after an end of a relationship (even though technically they were never serious) but there's still that undercurrent of something that is hard to ignore sometimes.

Years go by, Matt and Foggy are lawyers and starting their own business. MC is an art curator for a private gallery (or choose whatever.) Karen has entered the friend group.

Sometime after the Chitauri invasion, and Matt as Daredevil, they try again. And things are going well. Despite neither knowing the other's secret (Matt being daredevil and MC? Well, I like to think they're hiding powers. Maybe they're magical and while they never used their magic near him, there's a certain scent that magic has like the smoke of a fire, fresh soil, or the moment before rain strikes, but he obviously can't tell it's magic-there's no reference to that- and just assumes that's just specific to them), they're happy. They're taking it slow. And they haven't really mentioned it to Foggy though he's suspicious.

But of course, Elektra shows up again. MC doesn't actually know she's back. Elektra is Daredevil's world. But then they find her in Matt's bed and Matt has to explain it all anyway.

MC is understandably upset and asks if it's even a good idea for them to continue when they can clearly see how Matt is not over her. Matt insists there's nothing going on. He's just helping her out. MC doesn't really believe him about being over her (they had heard from Foggy about what a mess he had been when Elektra left him) but decides they'll trust him to help Elektra solve whatever danger she's in. A relationship is about trust and communication, right? and they needed to start somewhere.

Elektra dies. Matt is distraught but trying not to let MC know. They obviously know and try to be there for him. They talk, and slowly, they patch over whatever cracks there had been. It's hard to date someone who has lost someone they loved previously, and MC has contemplated breaking up with him to give him room to breathe, but they don't want to and when they sort of hinted at maybe taking a break, Matt flatly refused, telling them that yes while he's sad he couldn't save Elektra, he liked MC and didn't want to give them up. He made a mistake once back in college and didn't want to repeat it.

Then, the whole Defender fiasco happens. Elektra is alive. Immortal secret club is trying to take over the world or destroy it (it's all the same, really). And Matt is presumably dead.

MC wasn't actually in the city when it happened. They were busy with work( and/or magic-relate business. ). When they came back home, Foggy was the one that sat them down and told them what had happened. They demanded that Jessica meet them to give MC the full details. They refused to believe that Matt was dead.

It feels like the ground is slowly breaking apart from underneath them. Jessica does meet them, uncomfortable and for once not spiky, and tells them about Matt's final moments. About Elektra.

MC waits for Jessica to leave before they react. Truly, they can't process it. Matt gone. Matt choosing to stay behind to fight Elektra.

They know the truth, though. Matt chose her over them again, and this time for the final time.

Matt couldn't live in a world where he had to choose to watch Elektra die again. Even if it meant leaving them behind.

Over the months, Foggy and Karen still hold out hope that Matt is alive. MC doesn't and grieves. Tries to come to terms with not only the loss of a dear friend, but also loss of a relationship as well.

When Matt does eventually come back, he's different. He's angry and determined to bring Fisk down once and for all. He doesn't approach Foggy and Karen or if he does, it's for Daredevil purposes. He wasn't planning to run into the MC, but he does.

The interaction is painful and biting. MC is holding a lot of sadness and rage herself. Things are said. Matt doesn't reassure them of their thoughts and assumptions because it's better this way. In his point of view, Matt Murdock is dead and the only thing important to him right now was taking down Fisk and protecting Hell's kitchen. MC, after learning his plan, says this isn't really about him getting justice or protecting people. This is him destroying himself. He wasn't a hero.

So he lives to fight Fisk. And it's final. Maybe Foggy comes by and updates them on what happened and invites MC to eat with them just like old times. Maybe they join the final fight and save his behind numerous times. A call back to the Defenders and how he could have called them for assistance but didn't. Maybe Matt tries to apologize or maybe he knows its futile, whatever it is, MC declines and decides they need a clean break from Matt Murdock.

The story would end somewhere here. None of those may be the actual ending specifically, but their relationship should have imploded by the end of the story.

This is all speculation, but Matt is beautiful, funny, and charming, but he holds a lot of baggage he's never really attempted to resolve. He's reckless with his life and single-minded. He loves his friends, but sometimes takes them for granted. And his relationship with Elektra, though beautiful and sincere, is destructive and dark and so impactful it ruins any other relationship he could have.

The MC has always denied being in love with Matt Murdock, but they were and have been since college. Maybe they should have known better than to accept a date from Matt Murdock, but they never thought they would be dealing with Elektra again. And it took a building falling on their boyfriend for MC to finally break this toxic cycle.

Idk what do you think? I would definitely need help writing this if I tried to pursue this.

Me and James are in the car on our way home from seeing a movie. I don't think I've been to a movie theater since 2018? So it was interesting to see how it changed. I didn't love the movie but I had fun.

Today was a good day. Though it feels a million years ago now. I slept okay last night. But waking up was tough. I gave myself an extra 5 minutes before I got up. James was there. And they would make the bed while I got ready.

My hair looked excellent today. I think there is still a bit of dye that I'll wash out tomorrow. But for now it's very vibrant and so I wore my green sweater that matches it and I felt really cute.

James drove us to the museum. They didn't work today but their bike was there so they would get that. But before then they took a little walk to get me breakfast at the fancy bagel place. I love my James.

While they were gone I worked on getting the tables set up for lunches today. And my coworkers slowly came in. I was mostly following today so there wasn't much rush. I would even have time to work on my crochet.

I would bring my crochet to my programs today. Since I was a second. It gave me something to do with my hands while the other educator did their intro.

And that was great. The kids were about 10 minutes late. And then I have an assembly line, a tour, and a second assembly line. And it was a good day. Even if people who should be better at their jobs continue to struggle. Mostly with timing. But it's fine.

The first assembly line was lead by Del and I had one line to run. And they struggled a little bit they finished all their cars and we're fun to work with.

My tour was good. It was second graders so it was mostly questions and I didn't dig in to my stories as much. There was a weird moment when Jordan's tour bumped into mine way to early and I was like??? But it was whatever. I think they learned a whole lot and that's all that matters to me.

My second assembly line was a little off but I helped fill in some blanks. And even if a teacher got a little snippy with me at the end when we ended at 1253 and not 1250 like she apparently wanted, but Jessica told us 1255 so I just split the difference. Everyone got on the bus and that was that.

I was really tired. Emotionally. Physically a little bit mostly mentally. I talked to John about my insurance woes. And then went to work on car supplies with everyone else.

I talked to Mubtasin, who isn't around a ton but I always enjoy his company, and have him back his name tag magnet back that I had been borrowing since mine went missing. He said it was no problem. And he finished his temperature blanket too!! So that's exciting. He says he'll show me next time he's in.

I left a little early. But ended up talking to Kelly in the parking lot for a while. Apparently she's going to try to do a million dollars in event revenue this year. Amazing.

I was ready to go home though.

When I got back to the apartment James and their friend Stephen were there hanging out. I sat on the livingroom floor and chatted with them both while I started my next embroidery.

Speaking of embroidery, the possibly commission is getting worked out and that's exciting!! But for now I just work on my own thing. I made a bear for today and worked on a heart shaped lollipop which you can see in the group shot with tomorrow's on it as well.

James went to get groceries. And I spent the whole time they were gone embroidering. And we had home made stromboli which was good. James even found vegetarian pepperoni which was best to try.

I was tired so I laid down to watch tiktoks until we left for our movie.

And I had fun going to the movies. But it was just to long!! Apparently it was a short film at some point and I think with editing it would be really good. There were some legit scars. But mostly it was just. Build up. Like 40 minute blocks of build up. I think I have to sit with it longer. I read the Wikipedia synopsis on the drive home and like the story there is solid. I just think the editing could be improved.

I am glad we went.

We are just parking now. And soon we will get ready for bed. I have a double shift tomorrow. So wish me luck. I hope you all have a good night's rest. Take care of yourselves!!

i assume you mean jessica de gouw for the girl in question. according to his wikipedia they haven't been together in years, and according to jessica herself last month she is in a longterm live-in relationship with a non-celebrity woman now. oliver deleted most of his posts about her back in 2020 but she says in the same interview that they are still good friends.

like anyone else, i have no idea who ollie is currently dating or if he's dating anyone at all. sorry i couldn't be more help. he is a private guy!

i read all of these in preparation for apokolips war because according to wikipedia it was based in part on all of them, and it ended up having basically nothing to do with any of them? like, i genuinely have no idea on what grounds they consider it to have been based on these comics? it wouldn’t have even gotten a “suggested by” credit in my book.

let’s start with final crisis. y’all know i love me some grant morrison, but this was definitely not my favorite of his that i’ve read so far. there was stuff i liked about it, like especially some of the green lantern stuff and the stuff with all the main justice league members becoming dark gods or whatever, but this is largely a case of me really enjoying the setup a whole lot more than the payoff. it just ultimately got a bit too esoteric for my tastes.

darkseid war was awesome. it wasn’t on the same level as some of the earlier new 52 stuff i’ve read recently, but it’s easily my favorite of these three stories. and grail just walking through the justice league repeatedly is uncomfortably hot. she gave me several gay crises. i also really enjoyed seeing the justice league just… doing a murder investigation towards the beginning. that was a really cool hook into the story, though i did appreciate them calling out the fact that normally they wouldn’t have the entire justice league doing something that mundane. again, i loved all the green lantern stuff, especially jessica becoming a lantern. out of all of these, i’d say this one had the most “there” there.

while the first two were at least interesting and short enough to be digestible, futures end was a 48-issue… they call it a miniseries, but i categorically refuse to call an event that long a “mini” anything. on top of that it is just a slog of repetitive storytelling that doles out information in a torturous slow drip and never really gives me a single good reason to care. it was published weekly, and it shows.

so, uh, yeah! again, not really sure how apokolips war was “based on” these. like, they had batman sitting in the mobius chair like in final crisis, but it didn’t turn him into the god of knowledge, he was just kinda darkseid’s right hand minion? hell, darkseid wasn’t even in futures end. shrug!
