Hey! I haven’t posted in a year, and haven’t posted with any regularity since Star vs the Forces of Evil ended in 2019 because, let’s be real here, the SVTFOE fandom was the reason I started posting on here in the first place. But that ends now! (Well, for today, until I am legally allowed to tell you more.)
Over the past year I have been writing songs and some preliminary score for an upcoming Netflix series called Jentry Chau vs the Underworld, continuing my monopoly on animated series with “vs” in the title. It was just announced yesterday, and you can read about it here.
But if you don’t feel like clicking away, here’s the gist:
• Created by the brilliant and wonderful Echo Wu, who is also the showrunner
• Stars Ali Wong as the title character (and who is also an executive producer). Also starring Bowen Yang, Lucy Liu, Jimmy O. Yang, Sheng Wang, Lori Tan Chinn, and K-pop idol Woosung.
• Plot synopsis! “[Ali] Wong will voice Chinese American teen Jentry Chau, who, while living in a small Texas town, discovers a demon king is hunting her for the very same powers she’s worked to repress her entire life. As a result, Jentry must balance the horrors of high school and fighting an underworld’s worth of monsters. But she’ll get a little help from her weapons-expert great aunt and a millennia-old jiangshi, also known as a Chinese hopping vampire.”
From what I have seen and worked on so far, the show is amazing and unlike anything you’ve ever seen before, and I can’t wait for you all to watch and hear it. (Probably next year? Not sure.) There are a ton of original songs, and there will also be an official album release, and get ready, because we are going HARD.

American Born Chinese
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
American Born Chinese (2023, USA)
Creator: Kelvin Yu (based on the graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang)
Mini-review:
I loved this so much! Sure, it has its flaws, but its strengths far outweigh them. The show feels refreshing and almost groundbreaking thanks to the way it takes inspiration from Journey to the West and Chinese culture. With these elements, the show gets to tell a fantastic story about coming of age and finding your identity. It also tackles the topic of representation head-on, with a beautiful monologue by Ke Huy Quan in one of the last episodes. I can't think of many TV shows that talk so frankly about this, and American Born Chinese deserves big kudos for that.
But the main reason why this show is a hit is its cast. For starters, we have legends like Michelle Yeoh, the aforementioned Ke Huy Quan and Daniel Wu. Obviously, they are as great as anyone would expect from them. But the young cast also delivers: Ben Wang's comedic timing is perfect, and Jimmy Liu pretty much steals the show with an incredibly charming and adorable performance. On top of all this, the action scenes are fantastic, with amazing choreographies and very stylish and cinematic direction. Also, I thought this was supposed to be a limited series, but I guess it's not? I'm not complaining, cause I really enjoyed it, but I hope it's doesn't end up being cancelled.
P.S. Why the f**k is Disney+ not promoting the hell out of this? They have Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu from Everything Everywhere All At Once, plus Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed the Shang-Chi movie, and they are doing nothing to promote it. It's seriously baffling.

Such an adorable and innocent boy. So naive. I sure hope he doesn't become an evil manipulator in the future...

@pollydrawsthings Surprisingly, I am the target audience for this movie. Haha!
They missed opportunity for Father Lin to have a better arc, where he could hug and emotionally console his distressed son, instead of being his usual tough and manly self. And another missed opportunity for Brother Lin to just go a little further during Natalie’s reveal speech and put his hand on Josh’s shoulder, to have his arc going from selfish to caring brother.
I wonder if Love Hard is a reference to Die Hard, mentioned so many times in the movie.
The last act made me tear up. Thrice. I’ll probably rewatch them again and again. MUST WATCH! Love Hard is a 2021 American romantic comedy film directed by Hernán Jiménez and written by Danny Mackey and Rebecca Ewing. Starring Nina Dobrev, Jimmy O. Yang and Darren Barnet.

The Monkey King - Movie Review
TL;DR – While not all of this story works, it is like lighting striking when it does. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 3.5 out of 5. Post-Credit Scene – There is no post-credit scene.Disclosure – I paid for the Netflix service that viewed this film. The Monkey King Review – Of the great works of human canon, few contenders have had the impact of the Journey to the West. It has had adaptions across every form of…

All the negative reviews were ALL WRONG. It being a box office bomb was so unfair to the movie.
And even Melissa McCarthy was really fucking good. I've seen a lot terrible unwatchable movies and this wasn't that!
I suggest it if you haven't seen it to see it. This movie deserves to become a cult hit.
I hope BRIAN HENSON can make more R rated puppet movies in the future.🤞

If you need a good comedy stand-up rec I say go for Jimmy O. Yang! He is absolutely hysterical. A part of his most recent show gave me an asthma attack and there were tears running down my face. Also one of his friends is basically real-life Jason Mendoza from The Good Place. You can watch him on Amazon.
