CN: spoilers for jjk 149
one thought i'm teasing out about mai concerns her last words, and how they're often framed alternately as a last wish and a metaphorical curse--a duty/burden/debt she charges maki with as she turns to go and take the last breath of her swan song.
but I also want to think about her last words ("destroy everything") as a reflection of the impetus for reparatory justice that's always already present in the legacy of most deaths, especially preventable and unjust deaths. this is dark, but if you've ever lost someone beloved to, say, an accident or suicide, you'll know that death has the effect of exposing a flaw or crack in the fabric of the world, sometimes a fundamental one such as its incapability to sustain conditions for a good life, which bereavement therapy/help aims to heal or reconcile. the grieving process often includes, on the part of mourners, much questioning about what could have been done, what should have happened to prevent that death, and also an attendant acute guilt/responsibility for not doing more in recognition of that. death in this situation is an anomaly, an earthly injustice with irretrievable metaphysical consequences; the mourning process becomes directed towards fixing that.
but death is also often associated with an insensibility about the structures of the world, an enlightenment you’re alone in -- "how could this have happened?" -- which gets reflected in media through metaphors about seeing the world, suddenly, through literal different shades, or feeling like you're ostracised, orphaned, or set apart from the continued flows and bustle of everyday life, or seeing invisible creatures made visible that nobody else can see (eg. thestrals in harry potter - sorry for the example), a literalisation of that insensibility and tectonic revision of understandings of the world's ontology (+ systems of rewards/penalties) that death provokes. that insensibility is often taken by outsiders to call into suspicion the rationality of any "revenge" quest aimed at righting wrongs after a death.
in that context, what kind of effect or purpose does mai explicitly voicing out a last wish that is so calm, rational, and directed (though it may not be her last wish -- we know she might have desired 1000 other things like boba tea or hugging momo goodbye that she decided ought to take a backseat then) have? I don't have a clear answer. it could simply be a way to make explicit the scale of the injustice that was committed against her and would have to be rectified (everything -- aka the entire structure of the misogynist and traditionalist jujutsu society!) or just an in-text device to amplify the scale of her death's impact and up the stakes, but I also think that her saying "destroy everything" might've been intended as a message to maki that the environment that birthed both of them doesn't deserve respect or care -- under its logic deaths like hers and maki's would be natural and normal, and so it deserves destruction, because it has deliberately circumscribed the bounds of life so that living is no different from a road to death for them.
(* I'll admit that all this of course doesn't account for usual sociocultural frameworks and narratives around death in japan itself, a big blindspot!)

“Destroy Everything, Sister” Maki from JJK, inspired by and partially redrawn from Chapter 149 ID: A digital painting of Maki from the Jujutsu Kaisen manga as a child. She’s looking directly at you with wide, startled eyes. She has one hand raised, and resting on her palm is a small reed branch. Warm light is shining from behind her.

jjk 149 spoilers
I genuinely do not like how Mei's death was handled. The whole concept of twins basically being one entity and holding back each other for the sole fact of existing is a big no to me. Worst is that in order to become stronger one has to give up living ,like yikes dude, why? Gege, why?

maki is an interesting character, bc she is generally acknowledged to be one of gege's best written characters in jjk, period. regardless of gender.
but the reason she is so great, is because her arc is centered around her experiences as a girl in a patriarchal society. not one that fits into the standard either.
she's born into a family that is considered misogynistic by other clans' standards. as a twin, no less, which is considered a bad omen. with little to no curse energy to boot.
still, for a large portion of her life, she desired to prove herself to them. in a way that reminds me of the myth of meritocracy? that idea of "if you work hard enough, you can do anything you want and you can prove yourself to the naysayers."
Tumblr media
but in her journey she learns it's impossible for her to rise in an institution that actively works against her.
this happens, specifically, when she goes to the zenin clan during the culling games (to simply collect tools). she's confronted by reality in ways that echo momo and nobara's conversation (about the weight of misogyny in their lives).
"A scar on the face can be a good thing for guys. But not for girls. You think the world of Jujutsu Sorcerers is based on skills? [It is] Sure. But only for guys. Even if a girl is skilled, if she's not cute, she is looked down upon. Of course, if she's only cute without any skill, it's the same. Women Jujutsu Sorcerers aren't expected to be skilled. They're expected to be perfect." (Momo, Chapter 40)
the first thing she is told when she visits the compound is "yikes, what a face. that ain't gonna heal. what are you gonna do Maki? [...] all you had going was your face and now it's wrecked. no one will even look in your direction anymore." (Chapter 148, p.2-3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
after that, she crosses paths with her mother, who, at face value, echoes the horror tropes of mothers that "fanatically conform to the institution" (i think her actions later make her more complex).
then, finally, maki comes across her father, who remarks on maki and mai's "worthlessness" to him. he's convinced himself he would be better off in life if they were dead.
maki's continuously told she has no value in this world. for things that are out of her control.
of course, this all leads to the loss of mai, who sacrifices herself in order to essentially push maki forward as a character bc "to gain something, you must offer something," in the world of jujutsu kaisen. this is not exclusive to them. it also leads to mai telling maki something that aligns really well with what "female rage" means to me:
"Destroy… Everything" (Chapter 149, p.12)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
why?
i think there is no amount of climbing you can do in a society that is actively pulling you down. no way to become clan head in an institution that wants you dead.
i believe it's this realization that causes maki to embrace her "monstruous femininity" that ultimately results in her ascension (as a person, as a sorcerer).
Tumblr media
i know some people criticize her decision to kill the zenin in honor of her sister's memory. but, i think the message here is that some institutions simply cannot be reformed.
also, note that with their destruction, maki's narratively released from their expectations.
anyways, what comes after is honestly hilarious. i think it's a mockery of what gege expected misogynistic readers to say. "you're not toji!" (Chapter 151, 6-19) as if drawing a parallel implies that she's his copy.
Tumblr media
another charming detail to maki's character is how sumo helps her find freedom/her groove. considering how, in traditional sumo, "women are considered impure and cannot step into the ring". it's just something so fitting for maki who continually defies gender expectations.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
long post to say: i honestly love her and i think ppl often ignore how entrenched her story is in the female experience bc they just see how buff she is.

So Kiya, I see this interesting theory of Yuuji and Sukuna in twitter, what do you think :
"I am starting to think cursed energy treated them (Sukuna & Yuuji) as conjoined twins because their souls shared a body"
"If Yuji has Sukuna CE and will later use his CT, he's techically his "twin" in a weird way"
"Yeah. Could still be true that they were siblings in the past or something. Just that as of rn, given what we know about ce and twins, without canonical confirmation that they were real twins, this could probably be the closest we can get to confirming the theory"
Oooooh, wait, wait, wait! I got thoughts! I have thoughts! The gears are turning! This is about to be so long, I just know it.
(Also, like to apologize it took me forever to answer this because I'll be real... I was stumped and for a while I barely could conjure up words for anything. Posts and fics.)
Okay, I always thought the whole "Yuji being Sukuna's reincarnated twin" theory rather interesting and honestly, I'm here for that. This is more of a joke for me, at first, that what if Yuji was Sukuna's reincarnation and I'm working on posts for that.
Now, being a reincarnation for his twin, has me thinking about some things.
I mentioned in this post that I find it fishy that Kenjaku birthed a vessel for Sukuna and one that somehow was able to control Sukuna, too. Yuji is a perfect vessel.
Thinking about it more, and it's just a thought, what if Kenjaku had been involved in Sukuna's birth somehow and is the reason why he turned out the way he is?
Not saying I'm right, but hear me out!
Picture this. What if Sukuna's parents asked Kenjaku for some kind of favor dealing with a child? Kenjaku took it as an opportunity to test out a few things and what if during Sukuna's growth in his mother's womb, it wasn't just him? There could have been another twin and yet Kenjaku may have done something that resulted in Sukuna's having the deformities he has? The four eyes, the four arms? Hell, you know it's been said some people have "eaten" their twin in the womb? Sukuna could have done that and because of Kenjaku, however Sukuna had been birthed was the result.
Sukuna mentions he was an unwanted child and maybe, just maybe it was because he didn't turn out how his parents imagined him to be and could have abandoned him. And if they did, Kenjaku possibly could have gotten their hands on Sukuna and looked after him for their own purposes.
But why? Well, my guess is to use him later as a tool for at least one of the reasons, but also just another case of wanting to experiment with souls and the human body.
Now, bringing back Yuji. What if Sukuna could have also had two souls, one that would belong to his intended twin, when he was a baby?
When Kenjaku made Sukuna's fingers into cursed objects, they also took the soul Sukuna host for his intended twin to later create Yuji. It seems wild, but hey, this is Kenjaku and almost anything is possible in JJK.
I think about what Mai talked about with Maki in chapter 149. (So spoiler alert ahead.)
She mentions how twins are considered a bad omen to sorcerers. To gain something, you have to sacrifice something. (Indentical) twins are considered one individual by cursed techniques. "I am you and you are me."
Let's apply this to Sukuna and Yuji.
To gain something, you have to sacrifice something -> Sukuna's birth, but the sacrifice was his would be twin.
Twins are considered one individual -> As the theory suggests, Yuji and Sukuna are like twins. After some rewatches and rereads, I realized that as different as they are, Yuji and Sukuna do be having quite a bit of similarities (I already made a few posts about such and I'm working on another). It's like they are one individual.
Twins are considered bad omens -> Sukuna brings nothing but pain and Yuji only feels pain and also consider that the people around Yuji has something bad happen to them.
Going off that last point, think about the Zenin and Hasaba twins. The Hasaba twins were killed by Sukuna and even their backstory is nothing but sad. Before Suguru took them in, the village saw them as the cause for their misfortune and mistreated them. Nanako and Mimiko only had each other. Same for the Zenin twins. They were mistreated by their clan and even if they fell out for a time, Mai and Maki are still close and only had each other. Both cases of the twins end badly. For the Hasaba twins, again, they are killed. For Maki and Mai, Mai dies.
Circling back to Yuji and Sukuna, here's something I see that the two have in common, kind of.
They're both loners.
They are surrounded by people, and yet they never really truly fit into a place. Sukuna reigns as the "King of Curses" and does as he pleases but he just never seem truly satisfied to me. It's like he's a part of himself is missing. That doesn't mean I'm excluding Uraume. Uraume is Sukuna's bestie, for real. Think about how he treats others. He's all for a good fight and impressed by some. If someone or something annoys him, he eliminates. It's a repeating cycle for him.
For Yuji, he remarks to Noritoshi that he's always been a loner. He does have friends, Megumi and Nobara, and even the upperclassmen from his previous school. Also peep the middle school flashback. The boys were discussing girls, but what was Yuji doing? Reading off to the side. He engaged in the conversation when addressed, but other than that, he is alone. Going back to Megumi and Nobara, the same episode shows Yuji going off on his own. Nobara goes shopping and Megumi was going home.
Yuji often tends to do a lot of things alone and even if it's with someone, like fighting a villain, it's not like he seeks out the help, at first. Instead, he syncs up with that person with the time comes for it.
While surrounded by people, some that do have positive relationship with, it just always seem they were missing something or someone in their lives.
What if like Maki and Mai... Nanako and Mimiko... they were meant to be twins? They seemed lonely because they did not have his twin with him?
To summarize, yeah, I'm on board with that theory. Cursed energy probably did treat the two like twins just as Mai and Maki were because... what if they were meant to be twins.
I mentioned this a while back. In this post, I wrote about what of the soul technique Yuji is going to use was the technique that Sukuna had? He seemed familiar with it. Now what if, that was a technique that could have been one Sukuna's twin was meant to have?
Just something I wanted to throw out there.

I was wondering how the inspiration for this fanfiction was born??? Like??? Helloooo??? This is pure genius and poetical wit all wrapped in the same otherworldly burrito??? HELLOOO???
I was also wondering if you could also give us a little sneak peak or hint about some of the plans you have for Megumi? (My poor baby😭 GEGE GET YOUR HANDS OFF OF HIM THIS IS A THREAT👹) And THANK YOU for giving us the Tsumiki arc Gege SHOULD’VE given us.
(No but I need to know your thoughts about the ongoing manga fight. It’s not a want, it’s a NEED love😭 Every time I think of my baby all curled up, CRYING HIS HEART OUT, hidden in the darkest, deepest part of himself basically wishing to disappear, I feel sick.)
I remember you said you wanted to post a certain chapter before june, did you end up doing it? (Was it the Sukuna introduction?) I’m so uncertain bc I’m not actually “following” the fic rn, just the updates, since I want to wait until it gets to the Toji-Megumi biofather-bioson mess of a reveal or the actual end if i’m brave enough (tho it really depends on how long this fic will be).
That said I read almost half of the fic during Christmas holidays and I’m in love with your mind. No I’m not kidding. There is something enchanting about your way with words.
Good luck on your new job!
ahh i'm so happy you like it!! if i had to point to one single thing that inspired tpg, it would be that one panel of maki and toji together in jjk chapter 149. it had come out a few weeks prior to me getting the idea, and i remember revolving it in my head like a microwave until the idea for toji raising maki just hit me!! i even remember where i was when i thought of the idea lol. i freaked out
for megumi, i really want to explore his thoughts on love. megumi is the type of person who doesn't overtly show his affections because he's so used to losing them the moment he does -- and yet he can't stop himself from feeling it. he def still has abandonment issues from what happened with toji, and as toji and megumi slowly realize their relation to each other, it's definitely going to be a challenge for megumi to accept
i did end up posting the chapter i wanted to post!! it was sukuna's introduction, yeah :) as for the megumi-toji reveal, you're gonna be waiting a long, long time, lol. that's what kicks off the final arc, and we have SO much to happen before then. so you should come join the fam :D i'm really happy you enjoyed it when you were reading it over the holidays, you're too kind!!! <333
