Hong Kong Phooey (A Black Belt in incompetence)
youtube
(Thanks to Derek S)
[All images are owned by Hanna-Barbera. Please don’t sue me or consult the Hong Kong Book of Kung Fu]
[QUICK NOTE: While doing research for this series, I found a number of articles about how it series was. I won’t comment on that (except to note that they had a black man voicing a character with a questionable Asian shtick. They could have at least gotten an Asian voice actor (NOT a white actor who can imitate an Asian accent, because that would’ve been worse!) But enough about that; this series has enough issues without bringing racism into it]
In the 60s and early 70s, martial arts films from Hong Kong (often known as “Kung Fu films” or (derogatorily) “Chop Socky films”), particularly ones starring Bruce Lee, were the rage. Enough so that a song about them hit number one on the charts.

(Thanks to netter11)
Naturally, there would be a Kung Fu-themed show on Saturday mornings. However, we’re a decade away from the first issue of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles being published (which wouldn’t come to TV until 6 years after that), so we’re stuck with...
Tumblr media
...Hong Kong Phooey (voiced by Scatman Crothers, who would go on to voice Jazz on Transformers, until (ironically) he quit due to a racist episode), alter ego of Penry, an incompetent janitor (and his super hero persona isn’t much better, but we’ll get into that later) who works for a police precinct (which is how he knows his...err, “skills”...are needed)
I would like you to look closely at his outfit. I don’t mind the red robe (as it makes him look flashier), but you’ll note he wears a yellow belt instead of a black one. In martial arts rankings, a yellow belt is a novice. No doubt Penry went to a few karate classes...
Tumblr media
...and stole the textbook (which he regularly consults, sometimes in the middle of a fight), thinking he didn’t need to take any more classes.
Next I would like to point out that every other character on this show is human. Penry is the only anthropomorphic dog on the show (except for the one episode when a second one showed up impersonating him) How much of a stretch is it that literally anyone could connect the dots?!
Penry’s unwitting contacts in the what has to be the world’s smallest police precinct are...
Tumblr media
Sgt. Flint (voiced by Joe E. Ross, best known as Gunther Toody in Car 54 Where Are You?), who seems to be the ranking cop there (as well as the only one who seems to be treated like a cop) He is also Penry’s boss. I have no clue, given how many times Penry has fucked up in front of Flint, why he still has a job. The only other other cop (and I wish I didn’t have to use this term loosely) we ever see is...
Tumblr media
...Rosemary, whose sole job is manning the switchboard. I don’t know about you, but if a 911 operator who answered with “Hello, hello! Police Headquarters! This is Rosemary, your lovable lady fuzz speaking!”, I would hang up and deal with the issue myself!
Assisting Hong Kong Phooey on his never-ending battle with having a fucking clue the forces of evil is...
Tumblr media
...Spot (Yes, a striped cat named Spot. Penry couldn’t even get that right!), who is a hell of a lot smarter than the hero, often defeating the bad guys while Hong Kong Phooey believes it was all him and takes all the credit.
Despite his (far too many) shortcomings, Hong Kong Phooey managed to build the ultimate crime-fighting vehicle ($50 says Spot built it after Penry dropped something on his head and knocked himself out)...
Tumblr media
...the Phooeymobile! If Hong Kong Phooey needs something other than a car (like a helicopter or a boat) to get himself around...
Tumblr media
...he just rings his gong and it changes into whatever he needs.
The shows had two capers every episode, connected by whatever issue Sgt. Flint had with Penry that week. Each caper had Penry take an unauthorized break (that no one seemed to notice) to sneak down to the basement (which he converted into a lair...that also no one noticed. These cops are HORRIBLE at their job if they can’t see this stuff happening right under their noses!) to change in a filing cabinet (which always gets stuck, forcing Spot to get him out) and ride off to fight the bad guys (which was really a distraction while Spot actually dealt with the bad guys) [Yes, this is pretty much the plot for every episode of Inspector Gadget as well]
If you would like to watch the series, you can find it on KissCartoon. If you would like to see an episode reviewed, let me know!

This is just a post of some jpeg results of messing with artificial art programs by using Chris Gethard to run through many different prompts being shared on /r/StableDiffusion/. Samples of some of prompts used:
Comedian Chris Gethard portrait, jack davis style, plastic, grayscale, pencil art, blue highlights, orange highlights, octane render, unreal 5, dramatic lighting
Comedian Chris Gethard 1980's Derth Vuder space villian robot guy action figure in Star Wars themed toy packaging with Chinese writing
Chris Gethard as The Mighty Thor
Chris Gethard as Son Goku from Dragonball Z, head shot, dynamic, ultra detailed, heroic, Sebastião Salgado, 8K, HD
Chris Gethard as a superhero painted by Alex Ross
Chris Gethard is Gross Pointe Blank
Chris Gethard head portrait, painting style of Joe Jusko
A wrinkled 80-year-old grey-haired Chris Gethard looks like an old man after 3 hours each day of makeup
There is many different free GUI’s as alternatives to DALL-E and Midjourney, where all that is needed is an NVIDIA GPU.  The above images were made with GRISK and some with Windows GUI, both perfectly made for first time users who just want to check out what this AI art stuff is about.   There also seems to be a beta web option called Dream Studio by StabilityAI.
--
Some Extras:   Chris Gethard in style of Superhero drawn by Bill Sienkiewicz both regular and “sketchy” style added to the prompt.

Then trying out different Grand Theft Auto prompts for both Chris and Shannon O’Neill.  Shannon turning out amazingly bad ass, Chris literally got shorted his pants rolled up.

Enjoy your nightmares with “Bethany Hall from Dragonball Z, head shot, dynamic, ultra detailed, heroic, Sebastião Salgado, 8K, HD”
