6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.

From the very beginning of Christianity the followers of Christ lived under threat [from both religious and secular powers], as the Acts of the Apostles makes clear. The martyrdom of Stephen and the floggings of Paul show the danger from the [misguidedly zealous] Jews. The refusal of Christians to proclaim that ‘Caesar is Lord’, [yet] their obstinacy at proclaiming, ‘Christ is Lord’ soon brought whippings to Paul and martyrdom to the Apostles [at the hands of the Roman Empire]. In many lands [even today,] Christianophobia-- the hatred of Christians-- is rife to the point of death or flight. In more sophisticated lands, [where blatant violence is largely disdained], there is a muted derision for those 'soft enough in the head' to believe the story of Christianity, building on a deserved contempt for the real failures of Christians to live out our ideals. [We tragically fail to truly imitate our Master, Who meekly endured far more persecution than we ever will, and Who was completely innocent of their charges. Nevertheless,] yes, 'they will persecute you too;' [and so we should humbly accept our rightful crosses in return. This has been, and shall remain, our paradoxically blessed lot from the beginning].

“I am the grapevine and my Father is the gardener. Any branch of mine that won’t produce fruit He will remove, but every branch producing fruit He prunes so it can bear more fruit. You’ve already been pruned by my teaching; keep attached to me, and I’ll stay attached to you. No branch can produce fruit by itself apart from the vine; in the same way, you must stay connected to me. I am the grapevine and you are the branches. If you dwell in me and I in you, you’ll produce much fruit for my kingdom; but apart from me you can’t do anything worthwhile. Anyone who won’t stay connected to me will be tossed aside with the other fruitless branches, where they will wither and then be thrown into the fire and burned up. But if you dwell in me and my words dwell in you, ask me for whatever you wish and it will be done. My Father will receive much praise when you bear fruit, showing yourselves to be my apprentices. I love you like the Father loves me. If you obey my commands you’ll remain in my love, just like I have obeyed my Father’s commands and I remain in His love. 
“I’ve told you all this so you’ll experience my joy, and so your joy will be full. Now, this is my command to you: love each other in the same way that I’ve loved you. There’s no greater expression of love than to give your life for your friends. And you are my friends, provided you do what I’ve taught you. I don’t consider you servants, because servants aren’t involved in their master’s business. Rather, I consider you friends, because I’ve involved you in all my work for the Father. Most apprentices choose their rabbis, but I’m the one who chose you. I’ve appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. So whatever you ask the Father for the sake of my kingdom, He’ll give it to you. I’m telling you all this so that you’ll love each other. 
“You’ll experience a lot of hate in this world, as I did before you. If this world recognized you as its own, it would get along with you just fine. But I chose you out of this world; you don’t belong to it anymore. That’s the very reason why it hates you. Do you remember when I told you, ‘Servants aren’t over their masters’? So those who opposed me will oppose you, and those who obeyed me will obey you. They’ll treat you this way because of who I am, because they don’t really know the Father, who sent me. If I hadn’t come and spoken truth, they wouldn’t be guilty of not knowing the truth. But as it is, they don’t have any excuse for their sin. By hating me, they reveal their hate for the Father. If I hadn’t come and done miracles for them, things nobody else has ever done, they wouldn’t be guilty of rejecting me. But as it is, they’ve seen the Father through me, and yet they hate us both. This all fits the prophecy in scripture, ‘They hated me for no reason.’ 
“When the Helper comes to you, whom I will send from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes out of the Father, He’ll testify about me. And you’ll also testify about me, since you have been with me from the start.”

20“Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will persecute you as well; if they followed My word, they will follow yours also.
21“But all these things they will do to you on account of My name, because they do not know the One who sent Me.
22“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have fnsin; but now they have no excuse for their sin.
23“The one who hates Me hates My Father also.
24“If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would not have fnsin; but now they have both seen and hated Me and My Father as well.
25“But this has happened so that the word that is written in their Law will be fulfilled: ‘THEY HATED ME FOR NO REASON.’

The word ‘commandment’ often implies coercion and regimentation, and ‘obedience’ implies an unwilling or even a sulky child. In the case of God’s commands, however, a commandment is a gift, indicating the way in which love can be expressed; and obedience is a way of seeking to draw closer to God by imitation. The lover seeks to act like the beloved, to be modelled on the qualities which are loved and admired. The commands of God are not random or domineering, but are indications of the ways in which we can draw just a little nearer to the infinite qualities which are seen in the creating and redeeming God. The generosity seen in the beauties of nature and humanity, in the beauty of tolerance and forgiveness, are reflections of the divine qualities. This [humble, constant, compassionate "reflecting"] is how Jesus kept His Father’s commandments and remained in His love, and how we too may do the same.
It might even be said that Jesus needed to suffer so that we might see that God too can endure suffering. Suffering and the supreme suffering of death are human experiences which cannot [derive from] God, [nor can they be said to reflect any quality of divine perfection, for sin and death only entered the human experience through sin]. And so Jesus Himself took them on to share and ennoble these also, [transmuting death itself into a door to life-- a paradox only God Himself could accomplish]. Jesus showed His love of the Father and His love of humanity by adopting and enduring the experiences which cannot touch an impassive God-- [by being so touched, He proved His tender heart forever.] Such is the full meaning of the love expressed by ‘as the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you.’

some people may not need this reminder but i'm someone who did so
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you." John 15:18-19 (ESV)
I'm someone that often reads that and thinks "oh yeah unbelievers out there hate me and hate the church" but as I was reminded rather brutally today
"The world" may be your unbelieving dear friend, "the world" may be your spouse who hasn't converted yet, "the world" may be your family, "the world" may be your professing but fruitless parent.
For the disciples, "the world" was their Jewish leaders, synagogue members and even their own friends and family.
And this isn't to say that every moment of that relationship is mired in that hatred but it is to say that until they are brought to you as a brother/sister in Christ - that hatred is there and it may come out when you least expect it.
If it has happened to you, please know you have the greatest comforter in the world - He has overcome "the world", He has overcome those relationships that bring you such pain and frustration. He has worked out their end for your good and His kingdom.
And if you have been hurt by this kind of relationship, consider this post a reminder to pray for them. Pray for reconciliation, between you and them, between them and the Lord.

26 Ὅταν ἔλθῃ ὁ παράκλητος ὃν ἐγὼ πέμψω ὑμῖν παρὰ τοῦ πατρός, τὸ πνεῦμα τῆς ἀληθείας ὃ παρὰ τοῦ πατρὸς ἐκπορεύεται, ἐκεῖνος μαρτυρήσει περὶ ἐμοῦ· 27 καὶ ὑμεῖς δὲ μαρτυρεῖτε, ὅτι ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς μετʼ ἐμοῦ ἐστε. 
My translation: 
26 “Whenever the Advocate might come whom I will send to you from the Father’s side, the Breath of truth which goes out from the Father, that one will testify concerning me; 27 and you also must testify, for from the beginning you are with me.”

The clause introduced by the indefinite temporal particle ὅταν modifies the main verb μαρτυρήσει below. The subject of the 2nd aorist subjunctive ἔλθῃ (from ἔρχομαι; subj. after ὅταν) is ὁ παράκλητος (“advocate, helper”; see note on 14:16).

15:27 
The postpositive δὲ is pushed back to the third position due to the emphasis on καὶ (“also”) and ὑμεῖς. ὑμεῖς is the subject of μαρτυρεῖτε (from μαρτυρέω); the verb could be a present indicative (futuristic, “you will testify”, so NASB, NET, HCSB) or present imperative (“you also must testify”, NIV; “You also are to testify”, NRSV). 
ὅτι is causal (“for, because”). The temporal prepositional phrase ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς and associative prepositional phrase μετʼ ἐμοῦ modify the present ἐστε (from εἰμί). The present-tense of the verb denotes present action originating in the past.
