Soundtrack album cover to Thunderball (1965) painted by Frank McCarthy.
Sean Connery as James Bond 007
(Perhaps the best album cover of all the James Bond soundtracks?)

“Moonraker”
-a thrillingly goofy James Bond film that includes some of the giddiest sequences ever captured on film
-since Bond, with very rare exceptions, exists more as a series of set pieces more then an actual connective narrative spine, this works pretty well in its favor
-first off, the moment where Bond is on a boat, another boat drifts by, a man comes out of a coffin with knives being thrown, bond returns the favor, man falls back into coffin truly dead
+and then the coffin hits a bridge, falls into the water, sinks
-it is fucking impossible for me not to love this scene. It is so dumb and so relentless in its conviction to entertain it tickles my soul
-Bond fighting a ninja in a glass art museum. Where it must hold a record for most shattering in a single area. Delightful
-Bond’s boat turning into a car, underscored by a double take from a pigeon
-a lover of bond who is hunted to death by dogs, in a beautifully shot forest
-the US marines fighting the yellow minions in outer space, with lasers and jet packs that makes it seems like a fever dream mash up of the arcade game “asteroids” and how you imagined all the toys battles when you were a child
+pew! Pew! Zap! Zip! Etc
-the indestructible behemoth of a brute (“jaws”, making his return) falling into a circus from a plane with no parachute
-speaking of, there is a certain thrill in seeing a man jumping out of a plane, knowing that camera operator had to jump out of another plane to record it. Stirring
-it’s been reported that the budget for this film was so massively out of control that they were paying interest on it 10 years later. Believable, because this film looks awesome and expensive
-the sets alone are gobsmacking, then the rain forrest et all
-props to one of the best double entendres in the series; when Q is asked where Bond is(he’s having sex in zero gravity)”I believe he’s trying for re-entry”
-John Barry does a pretty terrific score
+wild to think he did this, “the black hole” and “starcrash” in the same year.
-Spy peanut butter in outer space jam. What’s not to love?

Craig era: Bond theme barely used at all, save for credits
Moore through Brosnan era: Bond theme used for key moments of action and spectacle.
Connery era: Bond theme used for damn near everything including but not limited to: leaving an airport, being driven in a taxi, walking across a room and into an elevator.

Evangelion — An Anime Icon for some goddamn reason
If you're a film buff, people act like you have to eventually watch Citizen Kane and/or The Godfather. Never mind that not everybody likes every genre of entertainment, because these movies are inescapably iconic. They're treated as prime examples of storytelling in the medium.
Similarly, if you're into anime, it's expected that one day you must watch Evangelion. It's just that giant of an icon. It's treated as this incredible achievement, this untouchable piece of art. And again: Nevermind that this is just a general medium that delivers many genres of stories and not everyone actually likes every kind of story. Because this is still considered a PINNACLE of the medium.
And I've now done my homework and watched Evangelion. Or at least I've experienced the original continuity; I didn't do any "Rebuild" movies. Just the original TV series and The End of Evangelion.
Tumblr media
Key Takeaways:
........the fuck?
...........................................................the FUCK??????????????
— As I've previously indicated, the first half was kinda "meh." At least I got the sense that I knew what this show was about, even if it was kinda boring and repetitive and featured a bunch of annoying characters.
— BUT THEN! I liked most of the second half of the TV series. There were some twists that seemed to be going somewhere interesting! (Spoiler: They didn't.) We got to explore more of the background of these characters and dig deeper on them, which I particularly appreciated in regards to Misato.
— BUT THEN! I got to the last couple episodes and the wrap-up movie. And I just sat there like "SHIT, this thing is so far up its own ass that it's in danger of bursting out the other side."
Tumblr media
Actual footage of me watching Evangelion with combined confusion and boredom.
Those last couple episodes are simultaneously both too obtuse and too obvious, IMO. They spell out the characters' feelings directly and blatantly instead of letting us pick up on their struggles on our own, but they also take place in some existential plane that is only barely introduced or spoken about + they have so little to do with the rest of the series that they feel like an island unto themselves. But I know these were controversial even at the time they aired..... so then there was a movie that tried to wrap up the plot! And from what I understand, you have to do additional homework/research if you want the back half of said movie to make any fucking sense.
(Random Aside: Every time Shiro Sagisu's "Decisive Battle" started playing, I kept expecting it to turn into John Barry's "007" at any second. They start off SO goddamn similarly!)
IN CONCLUSION: Evangelion is absolutely one of the anime of all time. The animation is beautiful, the music is present, and sometimes the characters do things. They also refuse to do things just as often. It became so hugely popular and iconic because [UNKNOWN] and now there is enough merch of this franchise that you could feasibly live off of it. The concluding movie starts off with the lead focal character masturbating over the comatose body of his severely injured roommate/teammate/frienemy. People like and buy figures of these characters for some reason.
