Canada is ignoring the condemnations of a United Nations human rights committee urging a halt to construction of the Trans Mountain and Coastal GasLink pipelines.
The UN’s Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) “profoundly regrets and is concerned” that Canada is continuing to forcibly remove Indigenous land defenders from their unceded territory, states the letter dated April 29, 2022.
The letter singles out governments in Canada and British Columbia, saying they “have escalated their use of force, surveillance, and criminalization of land defenders and peaceful protesters to intimidate, remove and forcibly evict Secwepemc and Wet’suwet’en Nations from their traditional lands, in particular by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), the Community-Industry Response Group (CIRG), and private security firms.”
It goes on to say “numerous Secwepemc and Wet'suwet'en peaceful land defenders have been victims of violent evictions and arbitrary detentions by the RCMP, the CIRG and private security personnel [on] several occasions” since the committee sent an earlier letter in November 2020 urging Canada to stop construction of these projects until consent was obtained.

A B.C. MLA has tabled a bill introducing a cooling-off period for outgoing politicians from taking board positions or employment immediately after leaving politics – something that would have prevented a former premier from taking on a new job 24 hours after resigning.
BC Green Leader Sonia Furstenau tabled the Members’ Conflict of Interest Amendment Act, noting the bill would introduce a cooling-off period for former officials like it currently exits in federal politics.
“The amendments also permit former members to apply to the conflict-of-interest commissioner for an exemption, which the commissioner can grant if they are satisfied that the public interest is protected,” she explained.

Vancouver warned not enough time for BC 2030 Olympic bid - but are the timelines real?
Vancouver warned not enough time for #BC2030 Olympic bid - but are the timelines real? @TeamCanadaPR says they are not official.
Vancouver city councilors were warned last week that there is not enough time to fully vet a bid for the 2030 Olympic Winter Games. Due to that constraint, municipal staff reported that they were in no position to direct council on whether to move forward with the bid, or not. Vancouver 2010 Opening Ceremony (IOC Photo) “At the time of this report, staff is not in a position to provide a…

Mr. & Mrs. Smith S01
Tumblr media
Mr. & Mrs. Smith S01    [trailer]
Two strangers land jobs with a spy agency that offers them a life of espionage, wealth, and travel. The catch: new identities in an arranged marriage.
An interesting concept to mix an action series with a relationship drama. At least in theory.
There were a number of moments when the two clicked together. But overall I found it difficult to switch between more serious conversations and the still unrealistic mission action scenes, like when for example they create mayhem at the ski resort or at an Italian lake. It has no consequences.
The guest stars provide some welcome liveliness, but e.g. the psychoanalyst episode still was a bit boring.

British Columbia’s top court has thrown out a challenge of former premier John Horgan’s 2020 snap election call. The B.C. Court of Appeal released its decision Tuesday, finding the NDP’s move to call the provincial election one year ahead of B.C.’s fixed election date didn’t violate the B.C. Constitution Act. Non-partisan group Democracy Watch had challenged the early election at the B.C. Supreme Court but lost, before taking its challenge to the appellate court. In their ruling, the three-justice panel unanimously agreed that the province’s Constitution Act does not impose any limits on the power of the B.C.’s lieutenant governor to dissolve the legislature, or on the premier to recommend the legislature be dissolved.

Zelig (1983). "Documentary" about a man who can look and act like whoever he's around, and meets various famous people.
Definitely one of Woody Allen's more innovative films, but even to say that is kind of hard in the year 2023. Mia Farrow's great though, and there really is some interesting commentary on ethnicity and identity. 6/10.

Stephen Rea will be honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's ceremony. The award will be presented to the Oscar-nominated actor for his outstanding contribution to the Irish and international screen industry over a career that has spanned five decades.
Responding to the Lifetime Achievement Award announcement, Rea said: "So much of Irish culture has been recovered and reimagined. Music, language, literature, theatre.
Tumblr media
Stephen Rea will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award
"And cinema can be added to that list because of the special energy of John Boorman who produced Neil Jordan's first film Angel. And to my astonishment, my first film too. Neil thrust the script and a saxophone into my hands and suddenly I was in the movies. Well, one really original movie, which was at the beginning of a new confidence in Irish cinema.
"And now many films later, IFTA have, equally surprisingly, offered me a Lifetime Achievement Award. A lifetime of collaboration with the most generous and creative artists you could ever work with. And hang out with. Thanks to all of them. Thank you IFTA."

There are days when I have a hard time believing in the human capacity for making conscious, rational choices. Humanity often seems wholly under the sway of rage, terror, greed, ideological fervor. I nonetheless cling to free will because it helps me make sense of the world, and of my own life. I also fear that disbelief in free will, in our capacity for making good choices, will foster fatalism and despair when we can least afford it.
