Yes Drummer Alan White Dead at 72
- Yes’ longest-tenured member also played with Ginger Baker’s Airforce and the Plastic Ono Band
Yes drummer Alan White, the band’s longest-serving member, has died after a “brief illness,” his family said.
White was 72.
“Throughout his life and six-decade career, Alan was many things to many people: a certified rock star to fans around the world; bandmate to a select few; and gentleman and friend to all who met him, White’s family said.
Yes said it will dedicate its 50th Anniversary Close to the Edge tour to their fallen comrade.
“The news has shocked and stunned the entire Yes family,” the band said.
White was the best man at former Yes singer Jon Anderson’s 1997 wedding.
“We love you and will miss you,” Anderson wrote on Facebook. “You were just the best of the best for Yes.”
In his own social media post, Geoff Downes called White “a great brother and friend, the loveliest guy you’ll ever hope to meet.
“So dreadfully sad,” he said. “I’m devastated.”
White joined Yes as Bill Bruford’s replacement in 1972 after stints with Ginger Baker’s Airforce and the Plastic Ono Band. He is the drummer on such tracks as “Instant Karma!” and the Imagine LP.
“Sad to hear of the passing of drummer Alan White … he and dad Ginger remained friends,” Baker’s family wrote on Facebook.
White also played on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and more than 50 other albums by a variety of artists.
“I am so very sorry to hear of the passing of Alan White,” the Moody Blues’ John Lodge said. “He was an incredible drummer, and he played an influential part in rock ‘n’ roll history.”
