The second leg of excavations started with a beautiful find of an unusually large head fragment of  a Clay Idol of the same type that was found over one hundred years ago when archaeologist Björn Cefdehvarf excavated the famous site of Jettböle in Jomala on the Åland Islands. Although more figurine fragments were found during excavations in Jettböle in 1999-2000 finds of these kind of Idols are very rare indeed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Excavations of the Geta 16.9 site in 2021 produced 15 fragments of figurines of this same type including two head fragments but these were much much smaller in size compared to the one found today. All Clay idols seem to have had a flat spoon shaped body. The ornamantation usually consits of a netlike pattern.

In the summer of 1770 Théo received a surprise visit.
Tumblr media
It was 'Tine, who had come over unnanounced with a guest...
Tumblr media
... his new fiancée, a woman named Britta de Monet.
Tumblr media
Théo was beyond delighted at the news, and eagerly began speaking to the new couple to learn all about them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
They told her about how they had met one day after Sunday service.
'Tine had been waiting outside for a moment to think when Britta approached him.
She had moved to the local area that winter to live with her aunt, and was quite surprised to see 'Tine there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
She and 'Tine had met a long time ago during the very first Jomala market.
While 'Tine hadn't recognised her at first, he remembered vaguely talking to a girl matching his description, and after some pleasantries the two of them went on a walk together to get to know each other more.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, after months of meeting each other regularly 'Tine had made the choice to ask Britta for her hand in marriage.
He chose to ask her before he went to her guardian to ask, as he wanted to know her thoughts on it first.
Obviously, Britta had been delighted.
Tumblr media
Théo thought it was the most romantic story she had ever heard.
And she was so, so happy for her twin. Knowing he had found someone to share his life with, someone who would support him and care for him, made her overjoyed.

Business owners in central Helsinki have long complained that the city centre is becoming increasingly less attractive as a place to do business.
On Friday Helsingin Sanomat carries a report (siirryt toiseen palveluun) on their complaints, with barbers and retailers united in their view: downtown is not as busy as it used to be.
An opinion piece carried figures (siirryt toiseen palveluun) to back up their opinions, noting that 10 percent of commercial premises are now vacant, and turnover of businesses is down some 20-30 percent compared to 2019.
The issues are familiar. Remote work is now much more common, and consumption habits developed during the pandemic are hard to change. That means more online shopping and greater use of hypermarkets that sell everything from groceries to children's clothes and electronics.
Russian tourists have all but disappeared from the streets of the capital as well, after the war and border regime clampdowns.
While entrepreneurs suggest more free parking spaces as a possible solution, HS says the city must reinvent the role of its central business district.
People are now looking for experiences and services, rather than just shopping, according to the paper. That means making the city centre more enjoyable and one option is expanding the amount of pedestrianised space in the city centre.
Savings advice
With uncertainty in the economic situation comes some concern about savings. How much should be set aside for a rainy day?
Ilta-Sanomat has an article (siirryt toiseen palveluun) on savings best practice, with advice on how much people should aim to have set aside.
Hannu Nummiaro from the Lähi-Tapiola insurance firm says that firstly, an emergency fund of 1-2,000 euros is good to have in case, for example, an appliance breaks down.
Then people should aim to have 2-3 months' worth of income on hand, just in case. That should be kept in a savings account or an easily accessible and low-risk investment product, according to Nummiaro.
Once those are sorted, he suggests people look to start investing in shares or other higher-yield assets in order to build up a cushion for retirement.
Exceptional November
This year has seen much warmer than normal conditions in the autumn, and that is set to continue, according to Iltalehti (siirryt toiseen palveluun).
The paper has a look at the forecast for the weekend, which shows temperatures of 10-14 degrees Celsius in the south on Saturday.
In Finnish weather records that's exceptional. Temperatures of 13 degrees or above during November have been recorded only four times, in 1999, 2015, 2020 and 2021.
The all-time record was set on 6 November 2020 in Jomala, Åland, when the mercury hit 16.6 degrees.

In February of 1762 a momentous day arrived in the form of the first ever properly hosted market on Åland.
Ålanders had longed for permission to host such a market for a long time now, and everyone was very excited and eager to go to the market and experience it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The market was held in the village of Jomala and a number of farmers and merchants traveled there from all over Åland, including the Olafsson family.
While Ulf had originally meant to go with Constantine and Josef the passing of Josef's wife meant he couldn't come, so Ulf had brought both of the twins instead.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
However, as the day passed, it soon became clear that not as many merchants had come to Åland for the market and that most of the atendees were people already from Åland.
As the day went on people began more and more to gather around bonfires to keep warm and to drink and be merry rather than sell or purchase anything.
Tumblr media
Ulf held on as long as he could, but as the sun began to set he gave up and joined the other men around the fire to trade stories, news and jokes with each other instead.
.
Part 1 I Part 2 I Part 3
.
Historical Info
In 1762 after several requests an official market was to take place on Åland for the first time.
In the past if an Ålander wanted to sell goods to someone not on Åland they would have to either pay someone to ferry their goods over or sail over to either mainland Sweden or Finland.
There were several markets held in both parts of the country that were seen as very desirable places to sell your goods, and that often brought both merchants and the local populace a great income.
So, it's no wonder the Ålanders wanted to hold a market of their own and have people come over to them for once.
An Ålander parliament member (or riksdag as it is called in Swedish) named Matt Mattsson was the one who managed to win people over to the idea and finally get the permission for a market that the Ålanders had desired for such a long time.
However, unfortunately the market was held in February and partially due to the winter weather and partially due to already established markets being held the month before there wasn't many merchants who wished to brave the cold seas to attend this new market.
But, since there had been such a large push for the market the Ålanders were very reluctant to admit defeat, and so the market would be continued to be held for one day each February until 1796 when enough time had passed that people were ready to admit it was more trouble than it was worth.
One of the reasons people finally got fed up was the simple fact that people, especially younger people, were getting increasingly drunk and beligirent during the market due to a lack of customers attending it.
Each spring there would be multiple small crimes investigated that had happened during the market, such as fights AND ,perhaps more damning to the people of the time, a lot of "encounters" between two young people of the opposite sex leading to pregnancy, ruined reputations and rushed marriages.
