Big (1988)
Tumblr media
No conversation about the "body switch" genre would be complete without mentioning the king of the hill: Big. Even without Tom Hanks’ excellent performance and endless charms, this would be a great film. It has the big laughs and the right amount of sweetness to make it an everlasting classic.
At a carnival, Twelve-year-old Josh Baskin (David Moscow) inserts a coin into a fortune-teller machine and wishes to be “big”. The next morning, he’s grown into an adult (played by Tom Hanks). Unable to convince his mother of who he is, Josh moves to New York City to search for the machine, getting a job at the MacMillan Toy Company to make ends meet.
As a pre-teen in a grown-up’s body, Tom Hanks is perfect. He captures the giddy excitement and awkwardness of a child so well he makes it look like the easiest role an actor could play. The film makes it clear, however, that childlike innocence and wide-eyed wonder easily disappear - even among the people who work at a toy company. The story naturally lends itself to many funny moments. Josh and his best friend Billy (Jared Rushton) piecing together a resume for a job application, the two of them “living it up” now that they have access to the things only adults can normally get their hands on, several misunderstandings that happen as Josh navigates the grown-up world, etc. Just thinking about any of those moments is sure to bring a smile to your face even years after you’ve finished the movie. What you might not remember and don't expect to see are the more sensitive moments, the ones that prove this movie is more than a big piece of cotton candy.
For every scene of pure joy and wonder - the best of which features Josh meeting with his boss (Mr. MacMillan, played by Robert Loggia) in a toy store - there is another that… I don’t want to say cuts deep, but reminds the adults watching of everything they’ve lost between now and the time they were twelve. It’s uncanny how so many of Josh’s co-workers can be so childish and so unlike children at the same time. Anyone who remembers what it’s like to play with toys should be able to tell Paul (John Heard) that the plaything he’s proposing is lame but it took a literal child to put the company on the right track. Once his idea has been shot down (for all the right reasons), what does Paul do? he acts like a child and a bully. The fact that everyone sees right through him shows how juvenile he is. He's not the only character who passes through the thin barrier separating children and adults, reminding us quite elegantly that while the years can bring a lot of changes… some things always stay the same.
A lesser film would’ve latched onto Paul and made him a villain but Big doesn’t need a villain. The obstacles are everyday things, like emotions. We often look back fondly at their childhood, but would anyone REALLY want to go back to that time? Kids dream of growing up. Do grown-ups dream of becoming kids again? That question gets a lot more complicated once Josh experiences the emotional growth that comes with his exposure to the "real world". As a twelve-year-old, Josh was interested in girls but it’s not like anything was actually going to happen. As a man, his friendship with Susan (Elizabeth Perkins) could turn into a relationship, and then what? a marriage? a family? He’s still a boy; too young for that kind of thing… or is he? This movie isn’t playing by real-world rules. That makes you unsure of where it’s ultimately headed.
Big checks all the boxes. The performances are terrific. If I had to single out a top three, I’d have to hand it out to Hanks first, then a tie between David Moscow and Jared Rushton. Elizabeth Perkins, John Heard and Robert Loggia are all excellent as well. The screenplay is fantastic, with so many wonderful little details that make these characters feel real. The emotions are powerful and cover the complete spectrum - from heartbreaks to big, memorable laughs. Penny Marshall (who teamed up with Hanks again in 1992 for A League of Their Own, another great film”) has made an instant favorite that will stand the test of time. It’s hard to imagine anyone watching Big and not falling in love with it. (Theatrical version, February 18, 2022)

A Black Professor Defies DeSantis Law Restricting Lessons On Race
The inscriptions on many of the tombstones at the Pleasant Plain Cemetery tucked in the North Florida woods are so worn by time and weather that they are unreadable, but Marvin Dunn (82), a professor emeritus at Florida International University knows their stories.
On a recent afternoon, he gathered students and their parents at the cemetery and told them about the Rev. Josh J. Baskin and five other Black Floridians hanged by a White mob from an oak tree in 1916 after an accusation over a stolen hog sparked two days of terror.
The painful chapter in Florida’s history known as the Newberry Six lynchings is one the university professor has taken pains to help document over decades of research. It’s also one that he fears will be removed from Florida history lessons under a new education law championed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) as part of a broader push to root out ideas he deems “woke.”
The law requires lessons on race to be taught in “an objective manner,” and not “used to indoctrinate or persuade students to a particular point of view.” It also says students should not be made to “feel guilt” because of actions committed by others in the past. DeSantis and other proponents of the law, which went into effect last summer, contend some teachers have inserted political beliefs into lessons related to race.
The language in the legislation dubbed the “Stop WOKE Act” is sufficiently vague that educators and civil rights leaders worry it is having a chilling effect. The new law doesn’t prohibit teaching events like the Newberry lynchings, but teachers in several parts of the state said they fear it will compel them to water down or glance over uncomfortable truths about Florida’s past.
Nationwide, education has emerged as a political battleground between Republican lawmakers and other conservatives who equate many lessons on race, gender and identity with liberal indoctrination and Democratic leaders, teachers and others who contend omitting them is tantamount to whitewashing history and hiding difficult truths from students.

With the recent news of don Lewis from the tiger king series being alive and perfectly fine in Costa rica(I rewatched the tiger king series for the 3rd time just to make sure I got my facts right, I'm currently working on season 2 for the second time cause I don't remember too much) I'm again reminded of just how much casual and blatant misogyny in our society. Like first amber heard settling with Depp after he admitted to faking evidence and groups of people choosing to not investigate the 3 prior cases she won against her husband MANY years her senior and now with Carole Baskin being relieved of this shit.
Just wow. Crickets. All these people who used Carole and amber as examples of "clearly lieing attention seeking horrible women who just wanted to hurt these poor innocent little men 🥺" being exonerated despite all the evidence of their innocence being present from the get go just shows how much casual misogyny you can dig up from self proclaimed feminists in today's world. Like who tf, despite video, audio and text evidence of these men being horrible abusers and just all around shitty people with historical harm, comes out of tiger king or the depp v heard trial thinking joe exotic and Johnny Depp are fucking innocent???
Whose the next victim? What woman is going to be punished next for using the legal system on her male, slightly charismatic, abuser and stalker?
There was all the evidence from the get go but individuals in society still refuse to acknowledge that I'm sorry but no, the evidence doesn't show "women were wrong this time! See some women lie about rape or abuse!!" Why are y'all searching for an example of women being wrong or lieing about abuse? Because you wanna call all women liars? Grown men wrote articles for other grown men saying "what to do if your daughter is becoming a little amber heard?"... Wtf is wrong with you???
Now all these people and companies are coming out supporting Carole and amber and people who made skits about Amber's FUCKING sexual assault story and made a fucking sex toy based on it are crying "oh no! I didn't know! The evidence wasn't there! The algorithm influenced me!" Then turn on the next female victim to come forward. Like no I'm sorry the algorithm didn't make you make rape jokes, buddy. The evidence was there from the get go. They don't mention it themselves but Carole and amber both got fucking rape threats. Depp himself said he'd wanna burn amber alive and fuck her charred corpse and y'all were like " how dare you police the language of victims! I talk about my abusers like that!" Nope. I don't believe you were a victim from the get go cause ANY victim of rape knows that rape can be worse than death itself and I'd wish death on my rapists before I'd wish rape on them.
BUT EVEN IF YOU ARE A VICTIM AND TALK LIKE THAT-
I'm sorry but if you talk about rapeing your rapist in revenge.... 1st all you do is make yourself a rapist as well and your rapist a victim as well and 2nd seek therapy now. No other victim is gonna feel safe around someone who talks casually about wanting to rape someone for revenge. Jesus Fucking Christ. I'm sorry, this probably really jumbled, it's like almost 4 am where I am but fuck me, I'm so tired of society pretending to love and believe women during women's day then pull the shit they pulled on amber and Carole. You never believe victims if there's even one slight rice grain of semi-respectability in the man that hurt her. Start believing some women. Stop believing all men. If your first thought is "finally! An example of women lieing in court and getting away with it to hurt men!" You need help and you need to step away from the true crime/criminal justice entertainment.
You're not ready for the reality that most women don't lie about rape or abuse or stalking and most men are really that fucking terrible.
(p.s I don't support peta or josh or anyone else in this case but I do support Carole, who is the victim of not only a legitimate murder for hire plot but also of a misogynistic mob mentality that just because she's a woman hated by a gay conservative who totes anti-gun control nonsense that she automatically killed someone for money. Also watch the series again and please note the subtle but PREVALENT misogyny put out by joe and his crew. Every time they talk about women or represent women it's horrible. Nothing like cis gay man brand misogyny to remind you that yes, cis gay men are still fucking men and still fucking misogynistic)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 15, 2024 Media Contact: Matt Ankenbrandt Sports Information Director │ Small College Basketball 616.780.1335 www.smallcollegebasketball.com
2024 Bevo Francis Top 100 Watch List Announced
Kansas City, MO – The National Awards Committee and Small College Basketball are extremely excited to announce the Bevo Francis Top 100 Watch List for the 2023-24 season. Once again this year, the Top 100 Watch List consists of some of the top players from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, NAIA, USCAA and NCCAA. John McCarthy spoke about this years Top 100 list:
"Congratulations to all of the 100 players on the Bevo Francis Award Watch List,” stated McCarthy. “This is a very elite list of players, as there are only 100 players listed out of approximately 13,000 -16,000 players that are playing at the various levels of small college basketball. While the Bevo Francis Award is ultimately an individual award, team success is a big component, so these players have helped their teams to tremendous success thus far this season.”
The Clarence “Bevo” Francis Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball. Considerations will be season statistics and individual achievements, awards, personal character and team achievements. This is an incredibly prestigious award, as this award will only be given to one player within Small College Basketball per season.
2024 marks the eighth year of the Bevo Francis Award. Past winners include Dominez Burnett of Davenport University in 2016, Justin Pitts of Northwest Missouri State University in 2017, Emanuel Terry of Lincoln Memorial University in 2018, Aston Francis of Wheaton College in 2019, Kyle Mangas of Indiana Wesleyan University in 2020 and Trevor Hudgins of Northwest Missouri State University in 2022. In 2023, RJ Sunahara of Nova Southeastern was named the winner of the Bevo Francis Award. The award was not presented during the 2021 season. John McCarthy added this about the Bevo Francis Award:
“The Bevo Francis Award is the most prestigious award that is given to a player that has the finest overall season, based on our criteria, in a single season,” mentioned McCarthy. “Importantly, I am very grateful to our National Awards Committee for their tremendous insight and information."
On February 15th, the list will be reduced to the Top 50 players. One month later on March 15th, the Top 25 players will be announced. Big
Doesn't every young child wish they were grown up? That is exactly what this movie is about. It is directed by Penny Marshall, and stars Tom Hanks, alongside Elizabeth Perkins and Robert Loggia. and there is also an amazing performance by Jared Rushton, who was around 13 years old during the movie.
Tom Hanks character, Josh Baskin, is disheartened because he was not allowed to ride a carnival ride on account of him being too short. He then stumbles upon a Zoltar machine, and makes a wish that he was big. To his surprise, he wakes up as a grown man in the morning. The movie continues from there as he tries to locate another Zoltar machine to reverse his wish.
I thought the movie was pretty funny, and the story was engaging. The great part of this movie, however, is Tom Hanks' acting. His performance as a 12 year old in a middle-aged man's body is very believable, and is why I recommend the movie.

Top seven movies to awaken the child within you.
"The wonder in seeing the world in your eyes, young me." Like a time capsule that holds precious pieces of your youth. Friends who call to play all day under the blazing sun. The joy of innocence that tells your smile is genuine. Here are movies that will remind you of life before chaos/teenage/adulthood:
Tumblr media
7. Florida project
Moonee courts mischief and adventure while living in the shadows of Walt Disney World.
Tumblr media
6. Napoleon dynamite
Having the trouble of fitting in, Napoleon Dynamite takes courage of going out in his comfort zone, making the people in small-town presto Ohio in awe.
Tumblr media
5. Boy
A new zealand youth having dilemma on how should he see his father. Finding out he's not that good as he thought.
One of Taika Waititi's best film, he incorporated his interest, his personality and made a masterpiece that'll make your heart split in two. This movie perfectly imbodies drama and comedy. The awkardness of humans interacting and emotions presented in a brilliant way.
Tumblr media
4. Big
12- year-old Josh Baskin is transformed into a 30-year-old man and suddenly works at MacMillen Toy Company.
Tumblr media
3. Ferris bueller's day off
Ferris bueller a kid that gets what he wants. A day full of unexpected events caused by the mighty Ferris.
This was a movie that will make you just go with the flow. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” – Ferris Bueller, one of the most memorable quote in the film. It implies how people should just take life as it is, to look on the positive side because we only have limited time left.
Tumblr media
2. Little miss sunshine
A family that is eager to make their little daughter join in a beauty pageant, even if there are lot of hindrances in their trip.
Tumblr media
1. Stand by me
Four boys and their journey to find a body of a boy in their age.
This movie emits comfort. The deep perspective of boy struggling with how he deals with life because of being compared and death of his brother. He got friends that'll guide his back along the way, which made this film heartwarming and fun.
We surely all have films in or pockets that we want the world to see because of how much it meant for you. These are those films for me, movies that radiates youthfulness, in order to relive childhood memories. Trigerring a sense of understanding to the child in me, 10 years ago. Oh, how time flies so fast that all we got from the past are its nostalgic and wonderous memories.
