Buying Grid gives The Messenger a boost in social, not just in staffing its newsroom The Messenger’s purchase of Grid last week raised some eyebrows, at least in the small community of people who could tell you what both The Messenger and Grid are. (Or, in Grid’s case now, used to be. Its website was taken down Monday.) To the extent that anyone knows what The Messenger will be —... https://www.niemanlab.org/2023/03/buying-grid-gives-the-messenger-a-boost-in-social-not-just-in-staffing-its-newsroom/

📽️ Cyrano (2021)
I was so excited for this movie! The trailers made it look awesome, and I like the version of Cyrano de Bergerac that I have read. Unfortunately, the movie itself was a letdown. Peter Dinklage’s singing was not great, and it really bothered me that they didn’t make Cyrano have a giant nose like he does in the original stories. I didn’t realize that it was a musical going into it, which is fine; I love musicals. I did not love this one. Honestly, all of the singing was just average. There were some good parts, but overall one word can sum this up: disappointing.
Sex/nudity: 2\10 (kissing, some suggestive comments/lyrics)
Language: 1/10 (I don’t remember any; if there was any, it was mild)
Violence: 2/10 (several fights with some blood shown, nothing too graphic)
Overall rating: 5/10

Who the fuck is giving Henry Wise explosives.
Tumblr media
Charles Sumner and John C Calhoun will never stop being a weird thing to me.

Well then. Giddings always does have the worst fucking luck.

Dang it, the 30th anniversary celebration of Beauty and the Beast has put the idea in my head that a revival with Groban as Beast, Denee Benton as Belle and Joshua Henry as Gaston would be magnificent, and it’s not leaving no matter what. Sometimes wishful thinking is a form of torture.
I want this yesterday.

Zachary Avans, Arkansas inmate 661977, born 1998, incarceration intake at age 23, scheduled for release 04/25/2085
Burglary, Possession of a Firearm, Murder
A Bella Vista man was sentenced to 132 years in prison after admitting to breaking into a man’s home and killing him.
Zachary Avans, 23, pleaded guilty to second-degree aggravated domestic burglary, possession of a firearm by certain individuals and possession of methamphetamine. The plea was under an agreement that Andrea Stokes and Jeff Chandler, Avans’ attorneys, reached with senior deputy prosecutor Joshua Robinson.
Avans was charged as a repeat offender.
Byron Keith Blackmon, 30, was found gunned down on Northwest Fifth Street in Bentonville on April 27, 2021. He died at Northwest Medical Center in Bentonville.
Shannon Schmidt told police he and Avans are friends, according to the affidavit of probable cause. Schmidt said Avans asked him to drive him to an address in Bentonville on April 27, 2021, to visit a friend about a stimulus check. Schmidt said he drove Avans to Bentonville, and Avans asked him to drive around and then come back to pick him up. Schmidt said he picked up Avans near Northwest B Street, according to the affidavit.
According to the affidavit, Avans was in financial trouble after giving a friend power of attorney to have the friend collect bail and get Avans out of jail. The friend got the stimulus check from Avans but failed to rescue him from prison, the affidavit said.
Schmidt told police that Avans burned the shirt he was wearing in a fire pit when they returned to Schmidt’s house, it said.
A neighbor of Blackmon heard Blackmon screaming for help and found him lying in the street, the affidavit said.
A police officer saw an open door to an apartment at 501 NW B St., Blackmon’s apartment. According to the affidavit, officers saw blood on the living room door and floor, along with several bloodied pillows.
Police also found a used case from a revolver or semi-automatic pistol.
Avans broke into Blackmon’s home and then shot him, Robinson told Benton County Circuit Judge Robin Green.
Blackmon’s family and police agreed with the plea deal, Robinson said.
Megan Thompson, Blackmon’s mother, said it is terrible when a parent loses a child. It’s still hard for her to sleep, and she’ll be lost forever without her son, she said.
“He had the best hugs,” she said. “I miss him so much.”
The judge asked Avans to speak before she sentenced him.
“No, ma’am,” Avans replied.
The judge told Avans that this would be his last chance as she would introduce a restraining order banning him from contacting Blackmon’s family. She asked him again if he wanted to say anything else.
“No, ma’am,” Avans said again. “I have nothing more to say, Your Honor.”
The Judge sentenced Avans to 132 years in the Arkansas Department of Corrections. Avans must serve a minimum of 32 years in prison before being eligible for parole.

Twitter will soon let news outlets lay visual claim to their staffers’ accounts. Should they? Who owns a journalist’s Twitter account: the journalist or their employer? It’s an old question by now, a byproduct of the way social media has allowed reporters to create their own personal ~~brands~~, distinct from their news outlets. It’s become normal to see big-name journalists take their followings from job to job — from @BuzzFeedBen... https://www.niemanlab.org/2023/01/twitter-will-soon-let-news-outlets-lay-visual-claim-to-their-staffers-accounts-should-they/

Tennessee, Our New Home
During the whole road trip to Tennessee, me and Josh stopped in Sun City, AZ to visit his parents for a day. It was always pleasant to be with them and spending time with them. We left California on Mar. 15 evening and went straight to Arizona. We left the very next morning after spending a day there, and drove none stop through New Mexico & Texas until we reached Louisiana. We stopped by to see his biological dad and grandparents for a night. Joshua hasn't seen his grandparents for a decade and his grandma has not really been doing too well with her health, so it was best to see her while she's still around. I was amazed by how beautiful the land they lived on was. It was so beautiful and so foresty there. Of course that's why there's going to be tons of bugs and animals you got to watch out for, but I wouldn't mind living over there. The town of Benton is a very small town so there ain't much going on with live shows or nothing. Bossier City was pretty nice to drive through as we were in that town getting food to eat and getting some necessities from a pharmacy store.
We left the very next morning and continued our drive down through Mississippi. We stopped by Elvis' birthplace and museum in Tupelo as well as the park nearby where he originally played one of his concerts in 1956. Mississippi is beautiful, too. After checking out those historical sites and having lunch at a small burger joint, we continued our road trip through Alabama until we finally reached Tennessee.
The night we arrived in Nashville was on a Saturday night. I'll share my review that I left for the hotel that we originally was suppose to stay at as things got fucked up when we didn't get a chance to check in our rooms that we reserved a month in advance for.
I already began writing a negative review for the Drake Inn motel since this is the place we are currently staying at until we get to a better place. I'm not going to post it until we know for sure we will not have to end up back at this motel because I am currently having mail sent here. This motel is kinda bad as the conditions of the place is not well kept at all, it's entirely outdated and dirty or disgusting to anybody that is staying in this very room we are at.
Josh applied for jobs at 3 places and got a job at the Johnny Cash museum in Downtown. They were paying the same rate and there's some cool perks with his job that probably Graceland wouldn't be able to give. Graceland is where Josh really wanted to work for, but it's not realistic for us as we are currently sharing 1 car and my job right now is here in Nashville. It's only 12 minutes away from the Drake Inn.
I started my new bid with my company just last week. It took almost the whole week for me to get my ID badge. The night I received it, it wasn't activated so I wasn't able to use it for the doors until the next day. I haven't received my time card yet, but I'm happy that I have my ID badge so that I don't have to bug people to help me come in or out of the building. I'm assigned at the RCS 2 machine so this facility still uses these robots. They have talked about it at my old facility as it being ancient and outdated technology. Here in Nashville, they still use them and it's old as hell, but it's kept up in good condition. I dunno how much longer they will be able to continue to use these machines, because there's so much cons to them. They got their LCUS work areas which is where I would rather work. I hate working this machine because the trays of mail will jam easily such as when trays are properly strapped down, or overloaded with letters and the letters will come out or spill out or fall over, the 1/2 trays will turn sideways or the wrong way and won't be read correctly, and I would have to keep watch on the top rolls where trays travel and to make sure to clear any jams up there if they are not moving.
Mail Handlers here are able to use scanners. I have to make sure the labels are scanned and closed out when we dispatch the outgoing mail by 2:30am. People normally take their 30 min lunch break by 3am. Since i'm on this machine, I can't take my break like I use to. I'm pretty much stuck on the machine majority of the time and I don't use my head set for music since I have to be fully alert for the sounds from the machine when there are jams that I gotta fix or clear. The place is pretty regular sized and not huge like what I was use to. I know where to go to get a scanner, I know that the main break room is right by the entrance/exit doors. I still need to find out where the union office is. The guy never answered me back about whethere there is a union rep on tour 1 available. They post up bids on their wall monthly so that's where I'm gonna start looking for better bids so I can bid out of the machine area. It's really boring and miserable and I prefer to work manually like what I was use to. I can stay more busy that way and time can go by quicker. I can get the job done faster by myself wasting time to unjam and set up machines. I need to do what makes me happy. I dread going back to work having to deal with the stupid machine every night now, but at least now I know what to do around the machine.
There's a one day rule where me and Joshua will have to check out for one day after staying at the motel for a month. If we decide to check in a different weekly hotel, we will do it because this place is just in horrible condition. The place we want to stay at is closer to my job, so if Josh ends up having to use my car for a job or what not, I will be able to get to work by walking there because that's how close it is to it's location. I'm currently focused on finding the next best bid and bidding out of my current position and do something I can be a bit more happier with.

Quote
Senator John Parker Hale received similar praise from friends, constituents, and the press for his defense of Northern rights. When Andrew Butler (D-SC) called him a “mad man” during discussion of an antislavery petition, the normally genial Hale lost his temper, shooting back that Butler would have to “talk louder, and threaten more, and denounce more before he can shut my mouth here.” Northerners weren’t to be “frightened, sir, out of our rights … we are not to be frightened even by threats of danger personally to ourselves.” New Hampshire men would proudly defend their rights in Congress or in battle, let the enemy “come when they will, and where they will, and how they will.” Given Hale’s typically jovial style, this combative defense of Northern rights received ample press coverage. So did his skillful skewering of ranting Southerners, as on May 20, 1848, when he responded to one of Foote’s taunts by asking for a dictionary so he could find the insult’s meaning, playing up the comedy of the moment and bringing down the house. In the Thirty-first Congress, the ongoing contest between Foote and Hale was much like the gag rule battle between Henry Wise and John Quincy Adams; the two men were partners in taunt and torment. Like Adams and Giddings, Hale was an antislavery toreador, but whereas Giddings fought with physical bravado and Adams fought with sarcasm and parliamentary savvy, Hale’s chosen weapon was humor. He was a master at deflating Southern bravado by reducing the Senate to laughter. Such energized Northern resistance was striking. More striking still were the energized fears of congressmen about their safety on the floor. With hundreds of people milling about the Capitol, Joseph Woodward (D-SC) thought that if the Duer-Meade scuffle at the start of the session had been more serious, “in less than three minutes three hundred strangers would have rushed into this Hall” and produced a bloody melee, a scenario that was strikingly close to Foote’s doomsday threat. David Outlaw agreed. “In times of great excitement, as upon the slavery question[,] armed men might be admitted into this Hall, and in case of a personal collision this place might become a scene of bloodshed and confusion.” The press came to the same conclusion; a “bloody row” fueled by “outsiders” could happen at any time, and “civil war would thus commence in the Capitol.” The South’s “new game of frustration, or parliamentary hindrances,” could end no other way.  Southern threats of civil war didn’t seem so outrageous after all, but the American public—not congressmen—would bring them to fruition.
