Currently on view at Robert Lange Studios in Charleston, South Carolina is artist Joshua Flint's solo exhibition, "Dream Sequence."

This new series of paintings capture overlapping ideas and fleeting memories painted in a story telling fashion.

Flint says of choosing the show title “Dream Sequence:" “The phrase carries a strong correlation to the visual language of my painting. It is also a literary technique used in film and storytelling, which has a big influence on my work; as much of my work is derived more from literature than anywhere else.”

absolutely stupid that the way black sails engages with pirates’ complicity in slavery was the whole thing with jack and the fort rather than flint, while trying to ally with the maroons, reckoning with the fact that his crew, like all pirate crews of the time, would have considered enslaved people just another part of the value of a prize ship. (at that time pirate crews freed and took on some english-speaking enslaved people if they could work but that would’ve been a small minority of the enslaved people on captured ships.) I can understand that the writers might’ve thought that was a line they couldn’t cross with someone who’s ostensibly the hero you root for, but eliding it just feels strange to me. at the very least I needed to see flint reckon with the fact that he was not always as ideologically motivated as he is in s3-4 and would have been complicit in nassau’s return to english rule if the plan with peter ashe had gone through, + what that would’ve meant for the people he now calls his allies

i know i was only 14 when black sails started airing but i should have been given partial custody of the narrative so i could have included indigenous people/characters, had a scene for flint to actually reckon with his complicitness in slavery, had joshua live longer, given joji at least one line, and included even more gay sex

whyyy does everyone love thomas so much. in a lot of fics theres a flint moment where hes like "omg thomas would have loved madi :)" WOULD HE??? or would he think of her as a particularly well spoken, well read servant. thomas's plan was explicitly meant to establish a british colony on nassau to continue effective imperialization of the americas, and the systematic theft of land and extermination of people. flint supported this as james. flint Happens to side with the maroons - but had they not held flint's life in his hands and forced him to acknowledge them, he would have continued his barrage on the english without considering the slave communities. in his escape from charlestown flint breaks the lock on a cage full of enslaved people - they are meant as a distraction, because flint does not care to actually ensure their freedom. they are bodies between him and a gun, and at that point that's all they matter to him
