“[This version of The Hours] feels like there’s a constant movement of the drama. That makes it feel, in a way, cinematic. Some of the score as well. It really is evocative. The more I listen to it, the more I have it circling in me; it’s one of those things that you become obsessed with.” –Kelli O’Hara
“One of the magical things about the theater is that it’s always about getting in someone else’s head. And that can be me, a girl from Kansas City, trying to understand Virginia Woolf. It can be a man trying to understand a woman, a son about his mother. It’s dangerous if we start blocking those creative outlets.” –Joyce DiDonato
“I loved, loved, loved the film when it came out. It haunted me and stayed with me. The performances were so brilliant, and when I went back to it — all of these ideas, suicide, their lives as L.G.B.T.Q. people in New York City at that time, the period, all that was powerful for me.” –Renée Fleming

With Heggie’s Dead Man Walking, inside of me are two wolves.
The First wolf: wow, what a chilling and heavy and nuanced piece about the extremities of redemption and empathy and spirituality regarding capital punishment that when done right presents it neutrally and showing Sister Helen Prejean as a woman of deep humanity in a difficult position and plus with the Met Opera’s production we get to see Queen Joyce Di Donato shine again.
The Other Wolf:

ngl my favorite part of The Met's HDLivecast of The Hours was hearing Joyce DiDonato (who was a STELLAR Virginia) whisper "Such a big fan." to Christine Baranski after being interviewed by her.
Like....I love seeing celebs in their own right fangirl over other celebs. And also: same, Joyce, same.

Can we just talk about the absolute care and respect Joyce shows for her masterclass students? I'm still blown away by what happened yesterday when the first singer cried after being told "I don't think you comprehend how extraordinary your voice is."
First of all: it is! Gorgeous, huge, warm. 🥰 Second: if I'd been told that I'd never have been able to sing another note that day, so I don't know how she did it.
The way Joyce handled that situation was... Actually perfect. She stopped, checked in with her. Gave her a moment. Realized she needed more time, so she stepped in and started talking, pulling the attention to her and giving the singer a break.
Then she checked back in with her again and gave her options: continue now, be done for the day, or sit down for a break but continue later. Then she waited for the answer. Validated it. Respected it. And worked with it.
Just beautiful.
