While strolling in the streets of Hong Kong with a friend, Jubilee (Jubilation Lee) encounters a group of local teenagers who harass her by calling her “Banana” (a slur for ethnic East Asian or Southeast Asian people who are considered to have abandoned their Asian cultural identity or lost touch with it in order to adopt a Western cultural identity) because she is an outsider as she is born in United States. Fortunately, her friend drags Jubilee off before things could escalate.
As a Westernized Asian person (I am actually a Singaporean
Eurasian), I could somewhat relate to Jubilee a bit because I am an outsider in a familiar land (Singapore) and in a strange land (any Chinese-speaking countries I have been on vacation) because I am bad at speaking Chinese language and I am more used to Westernized culture.
