Три четверти картины - это снимки, поначалу к этому привыкаешь, но втягиваешься, потому что все безумно красивые, и за каждым стоит своя история. В этом фильме много боли - Сальгадо сделал себе имя на социальной фотографии, - однако все заканчивается хорошо. Теперь захотелось посмотреть, что снимала в последние годы жизни Лени Рифеншталь.

La Sal de la Tierra

El documental se estrena en 2014, como su fecha de estreno el documental responde a una modalidad posmoderna y es atravesado por un contexto posmoderno donde la centralidad del pensamiento repara en el hombre, en sí mismo, su existencia y la de sus pares. Su historia. El Documental promete como primera premisa un recorrido por la historia de su protagonista “Sebastiao Salgado” pero este personaje que recorre los cinco continentes como fotógrafo no puede separarse, como la historia de ningún hombre pero en este caso más evidente, de la historia mundial.

El documental tiene nacionalidad Francesa, Brasilera e Italiana. Tiene una duración de 110 minutos y ha conseguido una recaudación de US$57 000. El documental fue estrenado en el Festival de Cannes 2014, en donde compitió en la categoría Un certain regard y ganó el Premio Especial.2​ También estuvo nominado al Óscar al mejor documental largo de 20143​ y ganó el Premio del Público en el Festival Internacional de Cine de San Sebastián,4​ el Premio de la Audiencia en el Festival Internacional de Cine de Tromsø,5​ el Premio Platino a la Mejor Película Documental 2015,6​ y el César a la mejor película documental en 2014.7​

El documental está dirigido por Wim Wenders de nacionalidad alemana, quien cuenta en su filmografía (largometrajes) con más de 30 films, con 33[i] específicamente hasta el momento. Es el actual presidente de la academia de cine europeo. Y sus trabajos más reconocidos son: París, Texas; Cielo sobre Berlín, El miedo del portero ante el penalti o Llamando a las puertas del cielo y su última dirección “Papa Francisco, un hombre de palabra”. Cuenta con siete premios ganadores en el festival Internacional de Cannes

Si bien el director por su historia y trayectoria parece ser un hombre inclinado a un perfil conservador/ derechista, la sal de la tierra toca tópicos que son distintos a esos parámetros y puede deberse a la codirección de Juliano Salgado, el hijo mayor del protagonista de este documental.

Que con la excusa de contar la historia de un fotógrafo que ha viajado por los cinco continentes para desarrollar su trabajo.

The Serra-Pelada, Brazil's gold mine there before me! When I reached the edge of that enormous hole every hair on my body stood on end. I'd never seen anything like it. Here, in a split second, I saw unfolding before me the history of mankind. The building of the pyramids, the Tower of Babel, the mines of King Solomon... Not the sound of a single machine could be heard. All you could hear was the babble of 50,000 people in one huge hole. Conversations, noises, human sounds mingled with the sounds of manual labor. I had returned to the dawn of time.

I could almost hear the gold whispering in the souls of these men. All this earth had to be removed. It's not all gold. The guys had to climb small ladders leading to bigger ones to emerge at the top. You wouldn't want to fall down there! If you fell from the top you'd risk taking others with you. I'd climb up several times a day, but I never thought I'd fall. Nobody else fell. You were there to carry sacks, not to fall. And in my case, to take photos. These guys climbed it 50 or 60 times a day. The only way to get down such a slope is by running. If you stop, you fall. All these men together formed an extremely organized world, but in complete madness. You get the impression they're slaves, but there wasn't a single slave. They were only slaves to the idea of getting rich. Everybody wanted to get rich. There were all sorts: Intellectuals, university graduates, farm employees, urban workers. People from all walks of life were trying their luck. Because when you'd hit a vein of gold, everyone working that little section of the mine had the right to choose one sack. And in that sack that they chose is the slavery aspect, there might be nothing or a kilo of gold! At that very moment one's freedom was at stake. Men who come into contact with gold can never leave it.

The Salt of the Earth (2014) directed by Wim Wenders, Juliano Ribeiro Salgado. It’s an amazing documentary about the life and work of the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado, who has spent forty years documenting deprived societies in hidden corners of the world.
