Is there any particular design for Klonoa that you prefer?

Klonoa 1, no contest.

I love the oversized collar, shoes and pants. It really gives this impression of a little kid trying to look cooler than he really is. It's great.

In truth, there's absolutely nothing wrong with his Klonoa 2 outfit. It's a very optimized, streamlined look for the character, and it's no surprise that the bulk of Klonoa media out there uses his KL2 look.

But like I mentioned on my Klonoa review almost 15 years ago now, there's a definite sense that Namco wasn't happy with the performance of Klonoa 1 and has tried to reconfigure who they want the character to appeal to. Klonoa 2 and the Klonoa Wii remake push the character hard in to feeling less cute and more anime. They wanted Klonoa to be "cool," so they made him a little more Sonic the Hedgehog aspected.

Whereas in the original Klonoa, he was a little closer to something like Kirby, maybe. Sweet and cute with something, uh, "extra" around the edges.

Now, to be fair, Klonoa 2 feels like it directly picks up from the vibe present at the end of Klonoa 1, so some of that definitely makes sense. You could say the ending of Klonoa 1 brushes with a coming-of-age moment, and Klonoa 2 is rightfully a slightly more grown up version of the same guy. That's fair. It's valid to be that way.

(And it's interesting that the Klonoa Remake on Wii tried to fit KL1 more in to the stylistic choices from 2, whereas the new Klonoa collection that just came out seems to do the opposite, and seems to be reconfiguring KL2 to look more like the first game.)

Either way, I think I prefer Klonoa 1's look. It's more charming and, I dunno, less marketable in a way I find attractive.

And as you can imagine, I kind of don't like the way he looks in the Wii remake. Definitely a little too anime for a kid from a brick-and-mortar "Windmill Village."

It's all these buttons and clasps and stitching with an open jacket and rolled up sleeves. Two tone gloves so you know he's serious. Instead of a baseball cap now it's a fashionable newsboy cap with the ridged brim worn slightly at an angle. And this complex swirled eye texture. Just, like, 10% overdesigned to, again, make Klonoa seem "cool," when being cool definitely wasn't the appeal of that first game.
