Curious what the best and worst Force powers are in the KOTOR games?

I'll only highlight the standouts, and the ones that I don't mention are perfectly alright.

Best Powers

Insanity

I will always swear by Insanity. It's one of two AOE CCs available but it's better than Stasis Field because it lasts longer and it's save (Will) is less common. Like Stasis Field, its usefulness is in letting Mission/Atton get in really good Sneak Attack damage for free. During KOTOR 1, a well placed Insanity can let Mission slaughter an entire room of enemies on the hardest difficulty. And Insanity's base cost is low enough that even Light Side players can get use out of it. This is especially valuable to a Jedi Watchman, who has access to Sneak Attack as well.

Destroy Droid

Insanity doesn't effect droids, so Destroy Droid is the go-to. It damages them, stuns them, and cleaves to other droids.

Barrier - Resistance

In a D&D-based game, so much of your defense is based around avoidance. Barrier and Resistance provide something way more valuable: Mitigation. They flat out reduce the damage you take, which means they are always working. And unlike personal shields, they work for their entire duration. These are critical to smoothing out your damage intake.

Great Powers

Speed - Valor - Armor

These powers are exceptionally good, especially Speed and Valor as they give you good bonuses to Attacks Per Round and Saving Throws. All three of them boost Defense in some way as well. On their own they're good, but they really pop off in KOTOR II toward the endgame when you get Force Enlightenment, which lets you buff yourself with all three in a single round.

Malachor is very difficult, especially solo, so being able to reapply buffs that easily is critical.

Scream

Scream is AOE damage centered on the player that also debuffs enemy attributes by 6. This is useful to the entire party and can decimate the enemy. The health reduction alone of losing 6 constitution is deadly and it tacitly makes your allies more powerful and more tanky for the next 30 seconds. You could open a fight with Insanity and Scream and watch your allies chew through them like tissue paper.

Force Immunity

Due to a quirk in how enemy level is calculated, Force Immunity can make you immune to any force attack you can save against. This is actually BETTER than Saving Throws.

Bad Powers

Kill

Choke is actually useful as it debuffs the enemy after they come out of the stun. Kill only deals damage, it isn't fatal damage, and it's one of the least reliable powers in the game. I took Kill in KOTOR 1 and I think it actually landed twice in the entire game.

It's good if you really want to CC a single enemy, but Insanity is better.

Lightning - Storm

This is the hot take of the day, but fuck Force Storm. As an AOE cleave it does SLIGHTLY more damage than Death Field and Force Scream, at about twice the actual cost of the power. Storm as a power needs to be cast far more to get real use out of it, while the other two have secondary effects that are more useful. Storm is great if you don't want to use any other powers ever.

Terrible Powers

Force Crush

Force Crush is technically good, but damage on a single enemy is just a waste of a round. You're better off using Power Attack. Its only utility is on bosses, and because of how Force Crush works it ruins the fun because it removes gameplay.

Drain Force

I have no idea if this power works. You fight only a handful of Force users and they always saved when I tried it.

Force Deflection

The moment you get a lightsaber, this power is useless. And with the TSL Restored Content mod, you'll have a lightsaber pretty soon.

Force Body

Good in theory, however in KOTOR 2 Force Points flow like water.

While I have always logged into Deadly Stream and Nexus Mods regularly to check if my mods receive any new comment or bug report, July-August 2022 marks my busiest period in working on KotOR mods since developing and releasing my KotOR 2 same-gender romance mods in 2016-2017. (Having lots of free time certainly helps)

Throughout the past couple of weeks, the things I have done in modding KotOR include:

Updating my Kreia reskin mod by converting the files from TGA to TPC.

Updating my TSL Improved Party Outfits by updating the inventory icons with rendered textures of the party members' outfits, instead of using cropped images from screenshots.

Developing and releasing KotOR 1 Improved Party Outfits, my first new mod since 2018, on my 30th birthday no less.

Developing and releasing a new same-gender romance mod: Carth Onasi and Male PC Romance.

Supplying new bug fixes to the KotOR 1 Community Patch on its GitHub repository. Those bugs were related to Carth's romance that I discovered when I was working on my Carth and male PC romance mod. My Carth romance mod also includes those bug fixes.

Updating my KotOR 2 same-gender romance mods by restructuring the installation process and setting up TSLPatcher to patch relevant dialogue files instead of replacing dialogue files, in order to improve compatibility with other mods.

Finally figuring out how to make Mical appear on the Ebon Hawk during the Extended Enclave mod's expanded Rebuilt Jedi Enclave sequence, if both Brianna and Mical are recruited as party members via PartySwap. This is a vital update for the Extended Enclave compatibility patch in my Handmaiden and Female Exile - Disciple and Male Exile Romance mod, as well as my standalone PartySwap and Extended Enclave compatibility Patch.

Updating my Darth Revan Texture for Star Forge Robes by upscaling the texture and convert the texture files from TGA to TPC.

Making two mods that give named NPCs unique appearance by utilizing assets from SpaceAlex's K1 Enhancement Pack modder's resource: Belaya's Unique Look and Human Xor Unique Look.

This has been my most eventful period when it comes to working on KotOR mods since the development and releases of my KotOR 2 same-gender romance mods, but it is worth it.

I did play KOTOR 2 yes, but like maybe half the game ? I’ll sure would like to finish it one day, the writting is really great, especially regarding the Force and the Jedi.

But as for when, it’s the same answer I can make regarding if I’m going to draw some KOTOR stuff again : I honestly have no idea, sorry ! =‘D I do still love it, but me doing fanarts generally require that I’m super involved in something (or that I get commissioned of course !) and at the moment, my hyperfixations took me elsewhere than SW content.

Kotor 2 is the absolutnbastard kid from Star Wars. Both fandom and the companies. In Galaxy of Heroes we have the entire roster from KOTOR and even shit from SWTOR but only the sith trio from kotor 2. The fandom usually loves and talk a lot more about 1 than 2 and it kinda makes me sad :c

Like the stuff from Kotor 2 is just so GOOD. Corrupting your companion?that shit isnt even on swtor besides Jaesa. Learning higher forms if combat. Crafting stuff. Destroying items for materials. It's all just so rich on details. The comments from your companions. The ACTUAL CONSEQUENCES of your actions! Letting a world be ruled by a government or mercenaries, helping a Queen or a tyrant, allowing a world to rebuild and helping the veterans from not 1, but 2 galaxy spawning wars. The hopelessness of the Galaxy when it comes to the Jedi. The distance that they created with the normal people. So much that sith and jedi were the same to some. The story of ATTON. THE REVEAL OF GOTO? FREACKING KREIA? KOTOR 2 IS A GAME THAT SHOULD GET MORE LOVE
