honestly the best outcome to this election is incredibly low voter turn out, Biden winning by about half a point, at least one state going to an independent candidate, and Biden dying like the day before the inauguration, leaving Kamala Harris to pick up the pieces. That might get it through the democratic establishment's thick skulls that they have to find a new strategy but I kinda doubt it.

A.S. in Bedford, MA, asks: I consider a vote for Biden in 2024 as a vote for some months or years of Biden, plus the balance covered by his VP. Is there any way that Biden can hand-pick a better successor than Kamala Harris without weakening himself politically (whether or not he names them as VP before the election)? What about Secretary of State Antony Blinken? He's got to have the second hardest job in the country right now. (V) & (Z) answer: It would be very tough to pull off. First, Kamala Harris would have to be 100% on board with whatever story the administration would peddle in order to explain the change in running mates. Second, the administration would have to come up with a heck of a story, one that did not make it look like Biden screwed up in picking Harris in the first place, and one that did not leave Black women voters feeling alienated. There was a brief moment when that might have been possible. Biden could have leaned heavily on Gavin Newsom to appoint Kamala Harris to the Senate after Diane Feinstein died and heavily on Harris to accept. After all, Harris could have run for president in 2028 as a senator. But that ship has sailed. If Harris does get jettisoned, there is absolutely no way the new running mate would be another senior-citizen centrist white guy (Blinken would be 63 on Inauguration Day 2025). It would definitely have to be a much younger person than Biden, and probably someone who is either a woman or nonwhite or both.

The 2022 United States Senate elections will be held on November 8, 2022, with 34 of the 100 seats in the Senate being contested in regular elections, the winners of which will serve six-year terms in the United States Congress from January 3, 2023, to January 3, 2029. Senators are divided into three groups, or classes, whose terms are staggered so that a different class is elected every two years. Class 3 senators, who were last elected in 2016, will be up for election again in 2022.

All 34 Class 3 Senate seats are up for election in 2022; Class 3 currently consists of 14 Democrats and 20 Republicans. Two special elections will also be held—in California to fill the final weeks of Kamala Harris's term[1] and in Oklahoma to serve the four remaining years of Jim Inhofe's term.

“That was a long fucking four years,” writes Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace on Twitter, perfectly summing up the rock world’s mood today as Donald Trump departs from the White House and Joe Biden is officially sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

As Joe and Vice President Kamala Harris were sworn in, the new president announced in his inaugural address that, “We will repair our alliances and engage with the world once again, not to meet yesterday’s challenges but today’s and tomorrow’s challenges.”

He also spoke of the importance of unity – a feeling that is undoubtedly shared by many in the rock and metal community. “I know speaking of unity can sound to some like a foolish fantasy these days,” the new president said. “I know the forces that divide us are deep and they are real. I also know they are not new.

“Unity is the path forward.”

As you’ll see below, it’s not just the more politically-minded musicians such as Laura who have been reacting and welcoming in Joe Biden and his ideals (as well as giving Trump a virtual goodbye) – practically everyone in the rock world has got something to say…

Ask any member of the Republican Party what they think the Democrats’ most unforgivable action was while Donald Trump was in office, and they’ll all likely tell you the same thing: impeaching the GOP’s lord and savior on not one but two occasions. (The close seconds obviously being the Dems acting mean to Brett Kavanaugh and their neglecting to pass a resolution formally making Ivanka Trump a princess.) There were, of course, very good reasons why the 45th President of the United States was impeached, first in December 2019 and later in January 2021. However, if you or a conservative you know can’t quite recall what those reasons were, here’s a reminder: Trump tried to extort Ukraine for his own political gain and incited a violent insurrection that left multiple people dead, both of which quite obviously fall under the “high crimes and misdemeanors” the Constitution mentions when it refers to impeaching and removing a President from office.

Joe Biden, on the other hand, has not committed such acts. But Republicans are not going to let that stop them when it comes to attempting to boot him from the White House!

Over the weekend, GOP Representative Nancy Mace told Meet the Press host Chuck Todd that “there’s a lot of pressure on Republicans” to vote to impeach Biden. Asked how she personally would come down on the issue, Mace said she would “follow the Constitution,” explaining that she would not “vote for impeachment of any President if I feel that due process has been stripped away for anyone.” In 2021, despite criticizing Trump for the events that transpired on January 6, she chose not to impeach him over the attack on the Capitol and attempt to burn democracy to the ground.

On Monday, Rep. Matt Gaetz declared that if Republicans retake the House in November, their number one priority should be to “engage in impeachment inquiries to get the documents and the testimony and the information we need,” saying that if his party doesn’t go after Biden, “voters will feel betrayed.” Speaking to ex-Trump administration official Steve Bannon, Gaetz insisted that investigating the President should take precedence over “policy [and] bill making,” and lamented that some members of the GOP want to do dumb things like “work with the Democrats so that we don’t have to go through the pains of any government shutdowns.”

“We are in a battle,” the Florida congressman added. “And we have to open up every vector of attack on a corrupt administration that is punishing the American people out of these virtue signals to wokeism.”

Mace’s and Gaetz’s comments follow similar remarks from their colleagues about the prospect of Republicans spending the next two to six years devoting every waking moment to trying to remove Biden from office. Rep. Adam Kinzinger—one of the few anti-Trump elected officials in the House, who is retiring at the end of his term—warned last week that a House controlled by the GOP would attempt to impeach Biden “every week.” Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has made impeaching the 46th president an official plank of her own personal platform, introduced articles of impeachment against Biden the day after he was inaugurated. GOP nominee Joe Kent has promised, on several occasions, to “drop impeachment papers” on Biden (and Kamala Harris) “on day one.”

While some Republicans have thrown out vague reasons like “the border” and “Hunter Biden” to support impeaching the president, for the most part, their plan appears to be: “Impeach first, ask questions—like, ‘do we actually have a valid reason for this?’—later.” In January, Ted Cruz said on his podcast that Republicans would impeach Biden “whether it’s justified or not,” adding: “That’s not how impeachment is meant to work, but I think the Democrats crossed that line. I think there’ll be enormous pressure on a Republican House to begin impeachment proceedings.” As The Washington Post’s Aaron Blake noted on Monday, it was probably Senator Joni Ernst who best summed up the party’s position when she said: “I think this door of impeachable whatever has been opened.”

Gabbard: Today's Democrats "an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness"

In 2019, former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard ran for the Democratic presidential nomination. She did well enough in the debates to expose Kamala Harris as an intellectual lightweight, although didn’t gain much traction otherwise.

Now just three years later, Gabbard says she’s done with the Democrat Party entirely. In a Twitter thread, and also on her new podcast, Gabbard says she’s been disillusioned by Democratic promises of an “inclusive, big tent” political party. “I can no longer remain in the Democratic Party,” Gabbard announced. “It’s now under the complete control of an elitist cabal of warmongers driven by cowardly wokeness.”

Don’t hold back — tell us how you really feel:

Well, it’s tough to argue with that list of particulars. We have argued most if not all of those same points. In her inaugural podcast episode, Gabbard goes on to explore each of these points in more detail. She goes after some other specific points, especially the weaponization of the Department of Justice against political dissenters, such as pro-life activists and parents opposed to extreme curricula of indoctrination in public schools. Gabbard contrasts that with the DoJ’s inaction against illegal protests outside the Supreme Court justices before and after the Dobbs decision.

Gabbard offers plenty more in the full episode, embedded below, but she had Newt Gingrich at hello:

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich praised Tulsi for ditching the Democrats in a Tuesday statement on Fox News. He argued that she is one of many Americans who traditionally have voted blue but now find the Democrats unrecognizable. “[Gabbard] has always been sort of an independent maverick,” Gingrich said. “And I think when she ran for president, she realized how really isolated she was from the great majority of the Democratic Party, which is now, frankly, a pretty weird party….I think you’re seeing this drift. And we’ve certainly seen among Latinos a huge drift towards the Republican Party as they’re driven away by the weirder policies of the Democratic Party.”

True, and I suspect that we will see this dynamic in serious measure in these midterms. That is the traditional role midterms have played — to check the excesses of the party in power, and there are surpassingly few reasons to think this cycle will be an exception. Gabbard may not lead an exodus out of the Democratic Party as much as she personifies a trend that had already begun over the last year of Joe Biden’s inept stewardship.

One point to note, though: while Gabbard announces her departure from the Democratic Party, it doesn’t appear that she’s becoming a Republican, at least not yet. That may also be true of a lot of voters this year who will give GOP candidates a chance but will force them to earn loyalty. Stay tuned — and if you want to take that literally, here’s the full episode from Gabbard.

Update: A fair point on perspective, as far as it goes:

Liz Cheney’s gripe with the GOP has to do with personality and taste more than policy and its implementation, however. Gabbard seems disillusioned on a far broader basis with her party than Cheney is with hers. Gabbard makes a far better argument for leaving because of that rather than working within the party to align it on perceived principles, although of course YMMV on that observation.

Just Walk Away. There has never been a better time to do it. No one will blame you.

Lula's inauguration to be attended by 17 heads of state

Brazil's Foreign Ministry Wednesday confirmed that 17 heads of state will be attending Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's third presidential inauguration on Jan. 1, 2023.

Ambassador Fernando Igreja, who is in charge of the arrangements, said that the heads of state of Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Guinea Bissau, Paraguay, Portugal, Suriname, East Timor, Germany, Spain, Uruguay, and Zimbabwe are to convene at Brasilia for the occasion, which would make it the inauguration with the largest presence of heads of state since Brazil's return to democratic rule.

Igreja did not rule out an even larger number. “Itamaraty is still receiving confirmations,” he said.

Regarding the United States, Igreja pointed out that there was still no indication from the American embassy about who should attend the inauguration, but there are hopes Vice-President Kamala Harris makes the trip.
