MIRACLE MOMENT®
It’s not what you keep out that makes you safe.
It’s what you give out.
~ Author unknown
A MESSAGE from Founder/Executive Director, CYNTHIA BRIAN
Before Be the Star You Are!® was designated 501 c3 status in 1999, I had spent three previous years brainstorming and outlining the mission of the charity. Bombarded with negativity and violence in the media, I recognized that to empower women, families, and youth, one of our key goals besides increasing literacy, must be to establish a charity that embodied positive messages. As we venture into 2024, our mission of consistently evoking positive media messages is more crucial than ever.
We are living through a divisive and tumultuous time. Violence and negativity are on the rise. Throughout 2023 at Be the Star You Are!®, we continued on our journey of finding optimism and goodness. Once again we were named a Top NonProfit and earned the 2023 Platinum Seal with Candid. Our two popular radio broadcasts, StarStyle®-Be the Star You Are!® and Express Yourself!™ Teen Radio brought weekly conversations that enlightened, encouraged, and engaged. We shipped over 500 books and other resources to those in need through Operation Disaster Relief. Our Book Review Program, showcased honest reviews of books that volunteers read and reviewed to help parents, teachers, librarians, and you make informed decisions. At several in-person events, volunteers shared their positive personalities while providing outreach services and entertaining activities. An exciting pivot this year supported micro-entrepreneurs, mostly women, in developing countries create a path out of poverty through our Shoe Drive whereby 1575 pairs of shoes were collected and shipped.
As 2023 comes to a close, I want to express heartfelt appreciation and a deep gratitude to our incredible global volunteers and to our supporters. The teen reporters and hosts on Express Yourself!™ deserve a huge round of applause for their intelligence, determination, and dependability in making the radio program a top-rated program. Our Voice America Radio team are phenomenal partners, always helping both shows to shine. Our Kindness Coordinator, Karen Kitchel, and our Book Review Coordinator, Stephanie Cogeos, deserve special mention for their dedication to our cause to make the world a better, kinder, more literate place. MB Jessee Painting, The Lamorinda Weekly, Mark Hoogs State Farm Insurance, and 5A Rent-a-Space have been stalwart supporters and collaborators for our events and activities. When we ask, they say YES!
To everyone who has purchased books or made donations of any amount, we are very appreciative. Every dollar counts to keep our mighty machine running. Congratulations to our volunteers who work diligently with our outreach programs and thank you to everyone who supports these efforts. We are excited to share the work our nonprofit does. Learn how you can support us and make a difference.

Hearing the words You Are Appreciated is one of the simplest and most uplifting phrases around. It goes leaps and bounds beyond saying “thanks.”
You make it personal, especially if said with gusto.  Being Appreciated means you’re not being taken for granted.  Saying these three words can easily become a daily habit if we look for opportunities. Such an easy way to get your New Year off to a great start.
And if you took the time to read this post, You Are Appreciated!
“There is more hunger for love and appreciation in this world than for bread.”

COMMENT FROM BTSYA TEEN BOOK REVIEWER
“Thank you so much for allowing me to be a member of the Book Reviewer team at BTSYA. I truly believe that this program will have a great impact on the world. From this community service opportunity, I chose to volunteer for the organization Be The Star You Are!, an organization that strived to change lives inspiring women, families, youth at risk, and many more. The volunteering role that I chose to partake in was a book reviewer. As a member of this role, I was encouraged to write book reviews spreading inspiration amongst my community of readers. There were many things I loved about this activity, I had no limitations on what sort of book I wanted to review, and I was able to indulge in my personal hobby while also giving back to my community.
Participating in this activity allowed me to learn about the transformative potential that comes from books. Writing reviews gave me the opportunity to share and express my thoughts and feelings about books that I adored. Additionally, this opportunity taught me the importance of empathy, connection, and reflection, as I myself was able to feel inspired all over again: as I thought and reflected upon books that have left an impactful mark on me and as I strove to offer reviews that I believe would resonate with readers’ experiences and emotions. My time as a book reviewer with Be the Star You Are! is not over. I will continue doing book reviews as my own personal interest, but this experience has already been a fulfilling journey of self-discovery, and I hope to bring a similar sense of fulfillment to other readers. “ Alisha

A MESSAGE from Founder/Executive Director, CYNTHIA BRIAN
November 13-19 is World Kindness Week and if there ever was a time that we all need to consider kindness as an essential human emotion, it is now. Life is complicated, chaotic, and constantly challenging. When we pause long enough to consider the feelings of others and be kind, we can connect in a meaningful way. Kindness breeds kindness. With kindness as our guiding light, cooperation and community evolve and multiply. Our Kindness Coordinator, Karen Kitchel, offers ways for you to act with kindness. At Be the Star You Are!®, we encourage kindness in all of our daily activities and spearhead outreach programs that are kind and inclusive. We donate uplifting books to those in need. We produce and host radio broadcasts that empower and inspire. We organize and participate in events that create and foster community while making a difference. Kindness is king!
My parents taught me to treat others as I want to be treated. Most of us practice this lesson as a basic need of every human is to love and be loved, to appreciate and be appreciated, to be effective and make a difference.
How can you be kinder? First, be kind to yourself. Treat others with respect.   Offer compliments and speak in a positive manner. Find the good in someone and let them know you appreciate them. Compliment often and criticize less. Donate your time and resources to a charity or cause you believe in. Help someone in need of support. Open your heart.
Practice being kind and you’ll feel a big boost of the love hormone, oxytocin. You’ll be less stressed and discover joy in the little things. Kindness is contagious. Pass it around!
Smile with kindness and remember you humanity.

A WEEK OF KINDNESS
by Karen Kitchel
This week  promotes the importance of being kind. The purpose of the week, celebrated in November each year, is to help everyone understand that compassion for others is what binds us all together.
What to do?
Interrupt the ordinary
Think about the people who help you get life done (trash collector, mail delivery person, etc.) Interrupt them with a bottle of sparkling water or candy bar and a “Thanks for what you do.”
Ice cream scattering
While at the grocery store, pick up a box of  ice cream bars and drop them off at a local shelter. All you have to say is “Enjoy!”
A line to say to make someone’s day
“You are really good at what you do!”
Magazines for the homeless
If you enjoy reading, gather your used magazines and take them to a homeless shelter.
Kindness cards
Make up a few note cards to keep in your car or purse to randomly give to those wonderful folks who keep restrooms clean or the person who fills your water glass. Cards can simply say: “You are appreciated."
Treat Someone
Going out for lunch or a cup of coffee? Choose a random person and tell the server you will pick up their tab.
Karen Kitchel is the Kindness Coordinator volunteer with BTSYA. She purchased the book, No Barnyard Bullies, as a gift for every kindergarten student where she is a volunteer teacher. www.scatteringkindness.com

Collection Connections:
Residing in the West for over thirty years, Kitchel's exposure to unique landscapes across the country has influenced her artistic development. Her mature work has persistently sought the answer to what meanings lay within landscape painting. Many artists of the nineteenth century instilled the artistic philosophy to represent Western lands from a vast, spiritual, and masculine point of view. Over time, Kitchel has rejected this concept, instead moving toward a systematic and fragmented approach of representation.
In her work, Kitchel focuses on what lies at your feet: a landscape of living, interconnected parts. Distinct from typical landscape paintings, which include foreground, mid-ground, and background of earth and sky, space, and scale, the artist takes away the horizon line and looks with an unexpected perspective. The viewer is immersed into and confronted with nature, looking directly into an ecosystem often overlooked.
The artist stated, "I am disturbing the notoriously romantic terrain of landscape painting. Hiss issues a feminist challenge to the genre of sublime landscape painting, which traditionally includes fixed conventions of timeless, unchanging beauty, a distant horizon line, and an elevated "eye of God" viewpoint." Hiss was inspired on March 19, 2005, ". . . the day the U.S. military forces invaded Iraq. I was working as an artist-in-residence at the Ucross Foundation . . . listening to the radio reports of the unfolding tension on the ground in Iraq while I was working in the studio. After the President's announcement that U.S. forces were going into Baghdad, I took a break to go outside and collect my thoughts. As I was pondering the inevitably, dramatically changing future that was triggered that day, I disturbed a nest of snakes. The literal and metaphorical parallels implicit were too ironic to ignore."
Karen Kitchel, Hiss, 2005, oil on wood panels, Virginia Johnson Fund.

Karen Kitchel is intrigued by concepts of native vs. invasive, and landscapes that contain stories of human exploration, occupation, and change. The resulting paintings are simultaneously old-fashioned and contemporary, combining meticulous craftsmanship with a conceptual point of view and aggressive, minimalist presentation.
Kitchel’s oil paintings have been featured in numerous exhibitions throughout the U.S., and are in private and public collections worldwide, including the permanent collections of the Denver Art Museum, the Palm Springs Art Museum, the Tucson Art Museum, the Joslyn Art Museum, the Pomona College Art Museum, the Buffalo Bill Historical Museum, the Nicolaysen Museum of Art, the U.S. State Department, the First Western Trust Bank and the Children’s Hospital in Denver, CO, and the New York City headquarters of Pfizer, Inc., among others.
Karen Kitchel was born in Battle Creek, Michigan and graduated from Kalamazoo College and Claremont Graduate University. She has exhibited professionally for over thirty years, and is represented by Robischon Gallery of Denver, CO, and Gerald Peters Gallery of Santa Fe, NM and New York, NY.

A MESSAGE from Founder/Executive Director, CYNTHIA BRIAN
The world feels as if ir is spiraling into darkness. Our hearts are heavy with the death and destruction in Ukraine, Israel and the Gaza strip. It’s challenging to wake up every morning and go about our normal business knowing that people are suffering in other parts of the world. Chaos reigns and upheaval is unsettling.
What drives us to be better individuals is purpose. What is your purpose? What is your passion? Whatever you discover, it is imperative that your approach involve caring for and helping those in need.
I’ve been smiling my entire life and do believe that smiling at strangers could be a lifesaver. We never know what effect our actions or inactions may have on another individual.
This is a short newsletter because important events are unfolding globally and we must pay attention. Get involved. Do your utmost to stop the horror. Hope for peace but help peace happen by being purposeful, loving, caring, and forgiving.
Keep smiling. A single smile may make a difference. We grieve with each individual everywhere who has been affected by these global calamities, both created by mankind and nature.
In love and peace,

HOPE
by Karen Kitchel
One of the best phrases I’ve learned from hanging out with kindergarteners is “Oh well, maybe next time.”  Recently parents were invited to join students for the first hour of their school day. As I said Good Morning to one little boy sitting alone, he replied “My Mom has to work today — oh well, maybe next time.”
Those words give us hope for tomorrow.  Doesn’t matter if it’s about losing a sporting event, finding your favorite restaurant closed, or what happens to us nearly every day.
The definition of hope is “A desire for a certain thing to happen.”  Whatever you face today, choose hope for tomorrow.

A Message from Founder/Executive Director, Cynthia Brian
Besides, hot, hot, hot, how is your summer going?
The news consistently brings us images of violence, devastation, and impending doom. It’s simple to become cynical, yet it’s better to combat the negativity. Stand up for the truth to give yourself the gift of positivity. This is a gift that no one else can give you: not a parent, friend, partner, or boss.  Only we have the power to be positive.  Our Kindness Coordinator, Karen Kitchel, believes in bringing joy to others. She writes: “Positive feelings are often the result of doing little things that bring joy to others. Think of a time when you did something for someone who never knew where that kindness came from. How did you feel? If nothing comes to mind, check out some easy ways to scatter kindness." Great advice is to always help others.
In my book, Be the Star You Are!® Millennials to Boomers, Celebrating Gifts of Positive Voices in a Changing Digital World, along with 31 contributors, I write about the importance of positivity and play. If you haven’t read it, this would be the time to pick up that book for the critical positive messages it delivers.
Play allows us to develop our imagination and discover our strengths. Children who are allowed to play while utilizing their own resources shape healthy bodies, minds, and spirits. Play teaches conflict resolution, instills a sense of self-esteem, helps with communication skills, encourages imagination, and builds confidence. The benefits of recess are significant. Playing is pleasurable, and who doesn’t need more amusing days?
I am often asked how I can nurture family relationships, maintain a large mini-farm, take care of numerous adopted animals, run a non-profit charity, write new books, and work full time. “Aren’t you working too hard?” and “It must be exhausting” are the main comments. My answer is simple and always the same: Absolutely I get really tired, yet I love what I do. I’m still learning how to pace myself since it is all play to me.  Every day I’m entertained, educated, and contributing in a positive manner. It is important to not only make a life but to make a difference. No cynicism allowed.
For a memorable summer and beyond, incorporate play with positive actions at home and at work. You will find yourself happier, healthier, and a beacon of positivity.
“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”
George Bernard Shaw

Gun Violence and Control
In the past months, mass shootings and gun violence have shattered lives and communities. Gun violence in America has become an epidemic. Three of our Be the Star You Are!® teens shared their views on a radio broadcast. Hannah, Nihal, and Sharanya addressed several issues from a youth perspective.
.
Stricter enforcement of gun control measures is a necessary step to address the alarming prevalence of gun violence. By implementing comprehensive background checks, closing loopholes in gun show and internet sales, implementing waiting periods, regulating high-capacity magazines and assault weapons, enhancing mental health assessments, and promoting responsible gun storage, we can foster a safer society for all. It is crucial for lawmakers, communities, and individuals to work collectively towards achieving a balanced approach that respects the rights of law-abiding citizens while prioritizing public safety. By taking these actions, we can reduce the devastating impact of gun violence and create a brighter future for generations to come.

Gun Violence
by Sharanya
In the depths of shadows, a sorrowful tale,
Where hearts bleed silently, where souls assail.
A poem of anguish, of lives torn apart,
Of gun violence rampant, piercing through the heart.
In streets once serene, now echoes of strife,
Where dreams turn to nightmares, snuffing out life.
The crackle of gunfire, a symphony of fear,
Leaves scars on communities, forever austere.
Innocence shattered, like fragile glass,
As the world bears witness to this tragic impasse.
Families weep, grieving their loved ones lost,
Their futures stolen, at such a terrible cost.
Oh, the tears that cascade, like a ceaseless rain,
As we mourn for the fallen, their loss a searing pain.
Each name etched in sorrow, a reminder profound,
Of the lives extinguished, no longer earthbound.
We yearn for a sanctuary, a refuge of peace,
Where gun violence ceases, and anguish finds release.
A world united, where compassion takes hold,
And the power of love is the story retold.
Let us rise together, hearts intertwined,
To confront this plague, leaving no soul behind.
Through dialogue and understanding, let us strive,
To heal wounds inflicted, and ensure all can thrive.
For every life lost, let a legacy bloom,
Of change and redemption, erasing the gloom.
In unity we stand, with a resolute voice,
Against the devastation, we make a choice.
Let this poem resound, a call to unite,
To end the senseless violence, to make things right.
For in our shared humanity, we find the key,
To heal the wounds of gun violence, and set hearts free.
May this verse be a plea, a beacon of hope,
That gun violence diminishes, like a darkened slope.
With compassion as our weapon, let us unite,
And in our unity, we'll conquer the night.

NEW FREE PROGRAM: TEENS TUTOR TEENS
Be the Star You Are!® charity is thrilled to collaborate with the Georgia chapter of Teens Tutor Teens to bring FREE tutoring for any child or teen in grades K-12 by highly motivated high school students. Since the pandemic, many students are behind in the basics of reading, math, science, and writing. Once a student requests to be tutored, a TTT Georgia chapter tutor will claim the tutee to help and contact them to set up a meeting. From here, the tutor and tutee (or their parent/guardian), can communicate on future meetings, additional help, academic, advice, and anything else that the student may need or that the tutor deems necessary. Be the Star You Are!®will soon have a direct sign-up form, but for now, students can sign up on their own to get free tutoring from a tutor through https://teenstutorteenslawrenceville.weebly.com/get-tutored.html. The chapter secretary will reach out to the student asking for age verification, just for safety and security purposes for both the tutor and tutee. Then, the student is connected to a tutor, and tutoring sessions will begin at times that work for both parties. We want to support youth academically and are thrilled to be able to partner with Teens Tutor Teens. Make sure when you sign up to indicate that you are from Be the Star You Are!®.  As soon as we have a a special BTSYA link, we will share it.
Happy Tutoring, Happy Learning. https://teenstutorteenslawrenceville.weebly.com/get-tutored.html

Love Versus Bullying:Share Your Heart!

Miracle Moment®
“Do not waste time bothering whether you
“love” your neighbor; act as if you did. . .
When you are behaving as if you loved someone
you will presently come to love him.” ~ C.S Lewis
A Message from Founder/Executive Director, Cynthia Brian
February…the month that Cupid shoots an arrow of love and acceptance and everyone becomes kind to one another. Except, that is not the case. As much as we talk about love and being loving, fear, hate, and bullying persist, often with deadly consequences.
A couple of months ago, my newest children’s book, No Barnyard Bullies, was published with proceeds benefitting Be the Star You Are!® 501 c3 charity. It is a true story that revolves around three main animals: a pampered piglet, a three-legged goat, and a tiny lopped-eared rabbit. The pampered piglet was adopted into my barnyard and immediately stared terrorizing the little goat who was born with only three legs.  The additional barnyard inhabitants of chickens, ducks, geese, goats, and rabbits feared this new addition and didn’t help Tripod, the goat, or intervene to stop the bullying. One day the tiniest bunny of the bunch decided he was going to stand up to the bully in the barnyard. I had never seen a rabbit fight, but Monet, the bunny, was fearsome. Every time that Cookie, the piglet, attempted to harm Tripod, the goat, Monet flew into action to stop him. Monet began guarding Tripod day and night until the other barnyard critters stood up to the mean piglet as well. Cookie learned that if she wanted to assimilate into this new world, she would have to be kind and loving. It took time, but today, Cookie is a humungous hog and the sweetest animal in the barnyard, even giving piggyback rides to all of her new friends.
Bullies are made, they are not born mean and spiteful. Bullying doesn’t just appear, it emerges. When children grow up in an environment where criticism, insults, mockery, physical abuse, or a lack of empathy are present, instead of being loving individuals, they may grow up to be bullies, bystanders, or in some cases, the victims of bullying. Children respond to the dominant parenting style they experience.
As parents, caregivers, educators, coaches, and others who interact with children, it is our responsibility to model behavior that is loving, kind, inclusive, and respectful. We have the power to intercede before bullying occurs to help our children learn healthy ways of interacting with others. No person needs to be a bully, a bystander, or a victim.
We must all stand up for love.
I have learned numerous lessons from being observant of the animal kingdom. When love is the principal ingredient, everyone prospers. Life is sweeter and peaceful.
This week I was interviewed by Florida’s most popular garden expert, Teresa Watkins, on the issue of bullying. Tune in at https://audioboom.com/posts/8245921-better-lawns-and-gardens-hour-2-cynthia-brian-no-barnyard-bullies-february-11-2023.
Let’s stop bullying, be empathetic, and share the love.
Remember: Love yourself first.
Have a Happy Valentine’s Day.
With gratitude,
Cynthia Brian

Sponsor Books to Prevent Bullying
Would you like to do your part to stop bullying behavior? Be the Star You Are!® is seeking sponsors to buy the book, No Barnyard Bullies, in bulk at a discount to be distributed to schools and organizations. If you want to participate in our booth by volunteering or sponsoring, contact us! We welcome you! Mark your calendars as this is a very fun, family faire!
When Quiet is not Peace
By Natalie Hsu
I grew up as a quiet child. And yet, I would never have described myself as quiet.
I didn’t speak often, but I lived in my head and was always lost in my thoughts. Had you asked me back then for the reason, I would have said that the world in my brain was simply a more interesting place. The only issue was, the people around me mistook my silence for a stubborn peacefulness and assumed me to be impenetrably calm. They didn’t know that everything in my head was always loud and confusing, swarming with thoughts that I never felt I could express.
From that period of my life, I learned that quietness does not always signify peace. As we face the world today, we must remember: peace is not the absence of violence or sound, but the presence of kindness and love; peace is not living without tumult, but living despite it and helping others to do the same.
It starts with one. One heart, one smile, one kind word, one book, that might spread the peace a little further.
Natalie Hsu is a teenage writer who volunteers with BTSYA from the San Francisco Bay Area whose goal is to spread kindness, one word at a time. When she’s not writing, she loves playing the piano, reading classic literature, and painting.
Amazon Smile Terminating
Along with other numerous grassroots nonprofits, Be the Star You Are!® was saddened to learn that the Amazon Smile program is ending on February 20th. Although Amazon gave a tiny percentage of each Amazon Smile purchase to the designated charity, pennies added to dollars. You have a few more days to shop through Amazon Smile while donating. Going forward, another great option for your purchases is to use IGIVEwhere over 2000 stores are featured with extra savings coupons for you. They are currently offering a $5.00 bonus donation through March 1. https://www.iGive.com/BTYSA

Miracle Moment®
“I have a rabbit’s foot, a four-leaf clover, and a lucky charm. The only problem is, none of them become effective until I do.”
~Ziggy
A Message from Founder/Executive Director, Cynthia Brian
As we welcome in the Year of the Rabbit, it's a perfect time to focus on empowerment and encouragement.  I have adopted and raised bunnies since I was a little girl and find them to be smart, sweet, strong, affectionate, and fast. Rabbits are one of my favorite creatures. People born in the year of the Rabbit are believed to be vigilant, witty, quick-minded, and ingenious. Does this describe you?
Empowerment is about giving people the tools and resources they need to take control of their lives, to make their own decisions, and to create the future they want. Encouragement is about providing support and motivation to help people achieve their goals. Together, empowerment and encouragement can help us all to lead happier, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.
In the coming year, let us all make a commitment to empowering and encouraging those around us. Whether it's a family member, a friend, a colleague, or a stranger, we can all make a difference by offering a helping hand, a kind word, or a listening ear.
One way to empower others is by giving them a voice. This can be done by being an active listener and providing an opportunity for them to express themselves and have their opinions heard. Encourage them to share their ideas, thoughts, and feelings, and create an environment where they feel safe and respected.
Another way to empower others is by providing them with the resources they need to succeed. This can be done by sharing knowledge, providing access to education, or offering financial assistance. Encourage them to take risks, to learn from their mistakes and to strive for their goals.
Finally, let us all endeavor to be a positive influence in the lives of others. Encourage others to be their best selves, to believe in themselves and to be resilient in the face of challenges. Let us be a light in the darkness, a beacon of hope, and an inspiration to all those around us.
As we hop into the Year of the Rabbit, aspire to assist, support, and motivate those around us, while being empowered and encouraged in return. When you are your unapologetically authentic self, service to others is easy. Every one is unique and everyone counts.
No matter how many lucky charms you have, until you go into action to be affective, nothing will be effective.
For 2023, I pledge to welcome, support, listen, value, and encourage our constellation of stars through kindness, inclusivity, generosity, and gratitude.
Will you join me?
Together, we can create a brighter future for ourselves and for the world.
Happy New Year!
With gratitude,
Cynthia Brian

Words To Remember
by Karen Kitchel
I asked many people this important question: “What was something said to you that you will never forget?”
Here’s a sampling of the responses:
“When I grow up, I want to be you.”
“Your mental health is more important than maintaining a toxic friendship.”
“I do believe in fairies. And Santa Claus. And leprechauns. Don’t let the magic go away.”
“If you don’t believe in miracles, miracles won’t happen.”
“Life’s most difficult issue, which causes so much pain, is learning to say goodbye.”
“Don’t say ‘good-bye’. Say ‘farewell, until we meet again.’”
“Never say never.”
“Everything is possible when you are willing to work to achieve it.”
“Be brave.”
“Take measured risks.”
“Be the Star You Are!”
What words will you speak today that may empower someone to remember?
Karen Kitchel who penned two chapters in the book, Be the Star You Are! Millennials to Boomers Celebrating Gifts of Positive Voices in a Changing Digital World, is the Kindness Coordinator volunteer with BTSYA. She serves meals to the homeless and is a volunteer teacher, writer, job coach, and mentor. www.scatteringkindness.com

No Barnyard Bullies is a Favorite
If you’ve been reading StarStyle® Empowerment for a bit, you may recall that the Kindness Coordinator for Be the Star You Are!®, Karen Kitchel, purchased the book, No Barnyard Bullies, for an entire class in Minnesota. She recently emailed me this, which definitely made my day.
Hi Cynthia,
Just wanted to share a little happening in Kindergarten today.  I started one-on-one reading of little five-page paper books with all the kids   A student wanted to read with me so I told him he could pick any book, and we would read it together.  He came back with your book and proceeded to read every word.  I was amazed!  I also pointed out how you, the author, signed the book.  Loved seeing him smile.
All because of you…
Big hugs,
Karen
So many people have sent photos of kids enjoying the book. The illustrations by Jensen Russell are superb. Book two will be published in 2023. To purchase autographed copies now, visit

SANTA DAY at 5A…the North Pole in Town
The weather was miserable, blustery, cold, and pouring rain, yet Santa and his reindeer made the trek to Moraga. The Gift of You!
Celebrating Giving

Miracle Moment®
“It was only a sunny smile, and little it cost in the giving, but like morning light it scattered the night and made the day worth living.”~  F. Scott Fitzgerald
A Message from founder/Executive Director, Cynthia Brian
Have you ever stopped to contemplate the importance of your smile? When we walk down the street and smile at a stranger, we give the gift of recognition. A smile says “I see you” and every person desires to be seen. As humans, we want to be appreciated and acknowledged. Smiling costs us nothing yet it offers innumerable value to the recipient. We never know what is transpiring in the life of another person. Your smile could be life saving.
This holiday season as we write checks to donate to causes dear to our heart, I encourage you to also give the gift of a smile to everyone you encounter. You will feel empowered and you will shine a light on the soul of another.
Give the gift of YOU!
Thank you for your generosity of spirt.
Sending star smiles across the miles.
Cheers for the holidays.

Do you have five minutes….
by Shubham Acharya
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” ~ Mahatma Gandhi
Folks, can you think of an entity that is both easy to come-by and very hard to find at the same time? It's time, my friends. So why talk about time when talking about giving back to society? The answer lies in the inherent value of time. Time is the most precious resource that an individual can contribute to any worthy cause or person.
This philosophy of donating time to people in need forms the bedrock of human culture. Both in moments of joy and sorrow, we look to share our feelings with others.
Moreover, the scale does not matter. What matters is the gesture itself. Taking the time to listen to someone's problems and offer a shoulder to cry on relieves some of their pain and replaces it with peace. If you manage to do this with just one person a day, you have made the world a little more emphatic. So, giving back to society does not have to involve grand gestures and major financial commitments; it can simply be achieved by devoting a little time and effort to being emotionally available.
Shubham Acharya is a Be the Star You Are!® volunteer in Mumbai, India who believes strongly in women’s empowerment and children’s literacy. Shubbam writes: “My mother was a teacher in a government sponsored school in one of the poorest localities in my area, so I grew up very aware of the importance of education and literacy in changing people’s lives. Having said this, I fell in love with the Be the Star You are!® motto ‘To be a leader, you must be a READER’.”
The Gift of Friendship
By Karen Kitchel
Not all gifts come wrapped in shiny paper with a bow on top. When we think about a time we’ve felt real joy or comfort, it was often because someone had given us the gift of friendship. It’s not the number of years we’ve known them. It’s the feeling we get when they cross our minds.
During the last year, many of us have turned to those special folks for both support and laughter. It would be easy to take these kind souls for granted, but they deserve so much more.
Let us all take a moment now to speak the names of those whom we consider to be our friend and give thanks for the gift of their presence in our life.

A MESSAGE FROM FOUNDER/EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CYNTHIA BRIAN
Tattooed on seven time Formula 1 world champion, Lewis Hamilton’s chest is the phrase “Powerful Beyond Measure”. As a dyslexic Black kid in a predominantly white school, he struggled academically, was bullied by classmates, and told by teachers that he would never be anything. With determination, grit, and stamina, he proved everyone wrong to become one of the most famous athletes on the planet.
Lewis’s trajectory is an admirable success story. He’s a role model with a lesson about believing in yourself, no matter the odds.
Today’s youth are in crisis with soaring rates of depression and anxiety. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 10 high school students attempted suicide in 2021. Between 2010 and 2020 suicide rates rose 53%. Suicide is now the second leading cause of death for teenagers.
This is alarming.
At Be the Star You Are!®, the majority of the people we work with are adolescents, many of whom are immigrants or children of immigrants from numerous countries, creeds, and cultures. On our unedited and uncensored teen radio broadcast, Express Yourself!™, our young reporters and hosts tackle and debate issues that concern them. The Supreme Court’s unpopular decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade has many high school seniors, both male and female, deciding not to apply to colleges in states where bodily autonomy and freedom of choice is not guaranteed. The political turmoil, sexism, racial intolerance, white supremacy increase, anti-immigration fervor, conspiracy theories, unabated lies, gun violence, Russia’s war, and the rise of autocracy have these young people understandably worried. Climate change and global warming instill a fear that our future Earth may not be hospitable to humans. By talking about these realities and sharing their opinions, our thoughtful and intelligent teens shine a light on how we can be powerful beyond measure when we embrace democracy, peace, and love. Select a topic and tune in at
https://www.voiceamerica.com/show/2014/express-yourself . When teens talk, the world needs to listen.
As parents, teachers, and guardians we strive to understand, to guide, to be truthful. We need to be role models, share experiences, provide love, and show approval. The new children’s picture book, No Barnyard Bullies, addresses these and other complex issues in the hope of instilling kindness and inclusivity in children from a young age. No one likes a bully, not even in the animal kingdom. Read more: https://www.lamorindaweekly.com/archive/issue1615/New-childrens-book-addresses-complex-issues-of-kindness-and-inclusivity.html
For a joyful family day, come join us at the Pear and Wine Festival on Saturday, September 24th in Moraga. Our teen chairperson, Sharayna, has a multitude of free, fun activities to entertain kids.
Remember we don’t have to dim the light of others to have our own shine brightly. Be the unapologetically star you were born to be and be powerful beyond measure.
Let’s help our kids be alright!

School’s in Session & Noteworthy News!
MIRACLE MOMENT®
“Learning is acquired by reading books; but the much more necessary learning, the knowledge of the world, is only to be acquired by reading man and studying all the various editions of them.”  Lord Chesterton
A MESSAGE FROM FOUNDER/EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CYNTHIA BRIAN
When I was growing up, summer vacation lasted until the week after Labor Day. Of course, we didn’t get out of school until mid-June, but that seemed reasonable since August is always such a hot month. Today, our kids are back in the classroom in August and for some school districts, the curriculum is completed by the end of May.
Many schools are struggling with getting enough supplies to enrich their students. If you have the means, consider what our Kindness Coordinator, Karen Kitchel, does annually. Donate a few items that teachers can use to your local schools. Everyone wins.
And with school back in session, remember to drive safely and slowly through areas when children are present. Actually drive safely and slowly at all times!
This past week, I spent over 40 hours on tech support for a variety of issues, plus my Linkedin account was hacked. Linkedin doesn’t have chat or phone support. It was infuriating and exhausting trying to find a remedy to a deleted account with blocked emails/passwords when the only way to access any support is by logging in. Twitter to the rescue. I found a Linkedin support person on Twitter who opened a case within 3 days and re-instated my hacked account. This made me ponder the safety of our youth who use their phones for their livelihood. Encourage 2 step verifications, changing passwords, and not sharing personal information. I found the Linkedin hacking to be very disruptive, intrusive, and upsetting. We don’t want our kids to experience weirdos online.
On a very exciting and positive note, my newest book is a children’s picture book, No Barnyard Bullies. The series is titled Stella Bella’s Barnyard Adventures and it is going to delight little ones (and maybe big ones, too). This series is based on true-life stories that I’ve learned from my adopted animals over the years since growing up on a farm. The book will be available before the end of the year and we will start pre-sales soon with a discount for you plus gifts of extra goodies. Best of all, the proceeds benefit Be the Star You Are!® 501 c3, where we really care about kids. More information below.
Also, come meet BTSYA volunteers and radio reporters in person at the Pear and Wine Festival to be held on Saturday, September 24th. We welcome sponsorships and appreciate donations to continue our vital empowerment work embedded in our mottos,
“To be a leader, you must be a reader. Read, lead, succeed. Communicate, collaborate, innovate!”
School is back in session. Here’s to a safe and fabulous learning experience for everyone.
Happy School Year!

SCATTER KINDNESS WITH SCHOOL SUPPLIES
by Karen Kitchel
As prices for basic school supplies have greatly increased, we can only imagine the challenge faced by families with many children who all need supplies.  This presents a simple and easy opportunity for us to come to the aid of our neighbors everywhere.
Teachers often choose to purchase extra supplies rather than to see a child go without. If asked what is needed, they will quickly provide a short list of things like crayons, pencils, markers, folders, etc. which can all be purchased either in-store or online and delivered to a home or school.
Each year I enjoy bringing an assortment of school supplies to Partnership Academy in Richfield, Minnesota where I volunteer to assist a Kindergarten teacher.  The response always makes me smile.
If you want to help children get off to a great start, consider donating supplies to your local schools. They will be greatly appreciated and give everyone a smile.

Let’s Get Together!
MIRACLE MOMENT®
Kindness is the highest form of intelligence. Wayne Teasdale
A MESSAGE FROM FOUNDER/EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, CYNTHIA BRIAN
Summertime reminds me of a favorite classic Disney film, The Parent Trap, where British actress Hayley Mills played the dual roles of twins Sharon and Susan as she tried to reunite her divorced parents. She sang a catchy song “Let’s Get Together” that I often sing in the shower when the world seems in turmoil.
I’ve been singing those verses often these days.
Somehow, people have forgotten how to be kind. Don’t we all remember our mother’s advising us “If you can’t say something kind about someone, don’t say anything at all?” It is hard for me to understand the nasty vitriol that consumes our politics today, dividing families and friends to create foes.
If you haven’t tuned in to our two upbeat, positive message radio broadcasts, this is the year to start listening. StarStyle®-Be the Star You Are!® airs LIVE every Wednesday from 4-5pm PT featuring inspiration, lifestyle information, successperts, and entertainment at https://www.voiceamerica.com/show/2206/be-the-star-you-are. On Express Yourself!™, teens talk while the world listens. Uncensored, unedited discussions hosted by amazing BTSYA young people showcasing fascinating guests from around the globe broadcast 3pm PT on Sundays. https://www.voiceamerica.com/show/2014/express-yourself. Both programs broadcast on the Voice America Network, the largest radio network in the world, on the Empowerment Channel. It’s our goal at Be the Star You Are!® to encourage and empower you to be your best selves. And get together! You can find more information for both shows at https://www.StarStyleRadio.com. The radio programs are also available wherever you listen to your podcasts including iTunes, Tunein, Stitcher, IHeartRadio, and Spotify.
Remember that love always wins. Kindness always prevails. Smiles will keep us happy. Love, be kind, and smile on!
Enjoy your summer! Let’s get together…ya, ya, ya!

SUMMER OF KINDNESS
by Karen Kitchel
What better way to end your summer day than knowing you scattered a bit of kindness. Need ideas? Here are a few:
Make handmade greeting cards for sick kids – cardsforhospitalizedkids.com
Decorate a paper bag and add an item or two each time you shop to donate to a local food bank. Find a food shelter near you – feedingamerica.org/foodbank-results.aspx
Plant a small tree and plan to visit it when fully grown
Bring a used book to a little free library – littlefreelibrary.org
Leave a thank you note in your mailbox addressed to your mail carrier
Take treats to your local fire station
Just smile at someone
Keep a kindness journal to remember all the wonderful things you did
Karen Kitchel who penned two chapters in the book, Be the Star You Are!
