The things that could have happened but did not are just as crucial to a life as all the things that do.

Maybe it had begun to happen before the slowing, but it was only afterward that I realized it: My friendships were disintegrating. Things were coming apart. It was a rough crossing, the one from childhood to the next life. And as with any other harsh journey, not everything survived.

123. The Dreamers, by Karen Thompson Walker
Tumblr media
Owned?: No, library Page count: 299 My summary: In a small college town, students are starting to fall asleep, and not wake up. Soon the sleeping sickness has spread through town, and people are starting to realise something is wrong. From the two young children of a disaster prepper, to a young family with a small child, to the original girl’s roommate, to a professor whose husband is in a nursing home - everyone has their ways of coping with the mysterious illness, even as the doctors and psychologists cannot explain it. Then some of the sleepers start to wake... My rating: 4.5/5 My commentary:
This book is so interesting. I absolutely loved its lyrical, appropriately dreamlike prose, the strange and drifting approach it takes to its world and characters. While I don’t think everything in this book by necessity hits its mark, by God I appreciated the effort. The ensemble cast! The wide scope! The aura of unease and uncertainty that flows throughout every page! This is a haunting book, and I am really, really glad that I read it.
So this book was so obviously a response to the Covid-19 pandemic that it genuinely surprised me when I checked when it was published and found out it was in 2019. I can’t help but evaluate how this book presents the reaction both of the authorities and the public during a pandemic to, you know, our real experiences with living through that exact situation - but even knowing the author had no idea a massive pandemic would happen within a year of this book’s publication, it holds up pretty well under that lens. Even some of the specific details, like a nurse’s wedding becoming a superspreader event or people choosing between their own needs and keeping up quarantine procedures, doctors and nurses working around the clock with few resources while the authorities aren’t stepping in. It was both kind of eerie, and a very good reminder that the events of the pandemic were entirely predictable to anyone with an understanding of how these things spread.
What else can I talk about? I liked the ensemble cast, which flitted between a few key characters while also giving an overview of the whole town’s reaction to the sickness. It really gave a great sense of how everyone is acting within this situation while still maintaining the personal approach of having specific characters, which I really liked.
I’ve mentioned the lyrical prose above - the downside to it is that sometimes the barrier between reality and dream was blurred, which didn’t aid comprehension, though of course I appreciate that this was probably deliberate. The reference to not everything hitting its mark was this; later, it is established that those who slept experienced time in a strange way, having premonitions of what was to come as well as living for years inside their dreams, with the second victim of the sickness living an entire parallel life in her dreams in the space of a few weeks. This idea wasn’t really utilised to its best, it was introduced too late to really be fleshed out, but overall I think it worked. And certainly, it didn’t dampen my enjoyment of this lovely book.
Next up, back into Horrible Horrible Things, as a young woman escapes a cult.

THE DREAMERS BY KAREN THOMPSON WALKER: QUOTE
"His girl will love and be loved. She will suffer, and she will cause suffering. She will be known and unknown. She will be content and discontented. She will sometimes be lonely and sometimes less so. She will dream and be dreamed of. She will grieve and be grieved for. She will struggle and triumph and fail. There will be days of spectacular beauty, sublime and unearned. There will be moments of rapture. She will sometimes feel afraid.... And so much of this life will remain always beyond her understanding, as obscure as the landscapes of someone else’s dreams."

final thoughts:
listened to this one as an audiobook and it was so so so well-done. the type of apocalypse that it was was so unique and haunting - the earths rotation slowing more and more each day, so days get longer and longer, and all the psychological and ecological devastation that goes with it, atop the normal everyday life of a middle schooler and her family. so many of the themes i love in apocalyptic fiction, the way that disturbing, unreal things become mundane, and become mixed with what was already mundane... super hard hitting. overall would recommend to anyone who enjoyed station eleven or similar books!

Oscars 2024 Nominations Thoughts (Part Two)
Tumblr media
The Color Purple: Best Supporting Actress (Danielle Brooks)
Personally, I would have nominated Taraji P. Henson as Shug, but Danielle Brooks is a good choice. As for the film itself, I give it a solid 8/10. Also, I really need to watch the 1985 movie. (As for author Alice Walker's bigotry, we'll put a pin in that).
Tumblr media
The Boy and the Heron: Best Animated Feature (Hayao Miyazaki and Toshio Suzuki)
Finally, some quality traditional animation! Please let this one win the Oscar. We need more 2-D animated films! I need to see this movie again so badly!
Tumblr media
Nimona: Best Animated Feature (Nick Bruno, Troy Quane, Karen Ryan, and Julie Zackary)
Disney tried to kill Nimona and failed so spectacularly that the internet is rightfully clowning on them for it. I personally think Boy and the Heron should be the winner, but I will not be mad if Nimona gets it. (Side Note: A movie about Flamin' Hot Cheetos got a nomination for Best Original Song, and Disney Animation's 100th anniversary project got stiffed. That's fucking hilarious).
Tumblr media
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse: Best Animated Feature (Kemp Powers, Justin K. Thompson, Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal)
Quick, who is the best Spider and why is it Hobie Brown? All kidding (and Spider-Punk worship) aside, this would have been my pick had it not been for Boy and the Heron's unexpected smash hit at the box office and my heart. Again, won't be mad if this one wins either.
Tumblr media
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar: Best Live Action Short Film (Wes Anderson and Steven Rales)
Never has there been a more perfect pairing than Wes Anderson's directing style and Roald Dahl's witty prose. Case in point- Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of the best animated films of all time. I admit I haven't seen the other nominations in this category, so maybe take what I have to say about this particular film with a grain of salt. Still, I'll check out the other shorts on Netflix.
As for movies that got stiffed by the Oscars this year:
Tumblr media
I am honestly so surprised that Saltburn got nothing this year. It didn't even get acting nominations! At the very least, I would have acknowledged Barry Keoghan for his brilliant performance as Oliver Quick. On the other hand, I understand why the Academy may not have wanted to touch this one with a ten-foot pole. There were times in the theater where I actually started laughing out of pure discomfort. Still, I wish Barry (and heck, Emerald Fennell for Best Director) got seats at the adult's table.
Tumblr media
In any other year, Once Upon a Studio would have been nominated for Best Animated Short Film. Hell, it might have even won! But alas, this was Disney's annus horribilis, and the company had nobody to blame but itself. It's hubris was it's downfall in the eyes of the all-powerful Academy.
And that's all they wrote! See you at the movies!

It still amazes me how little we really knew.
We had rockets and satellites and nanotechnology. We had robot arms and robot hands, robots for roving the surface of Mars. Our unmanned planes, controlled remotely, could hear human vioces from three miles away. We could manufacture skin, clone sheep. We could make a dead man's heart pump blood through the body of a stranger. We were making great strides in the realms of love and sadness – we had drugs to spur desire, drugs for melting pain. We performed all sorts of miracles. We could make the blind see and the deaf hear and doctors daily conjured babies from the wombs of infertile women. At the time of the slowing, stem cell researchers were on the verge of healing paralysis – surely the lame soon would have walked.
And yet, the unknown still outweighed the known. We never determined the cause of the slowing. The source of our suffering remained forever mysterious.

In The Flesh by Dominic Mitchell (2013), script to screen -> Series 1, Episode 2 (pt. 4 / ?)
Luke Newberry - Kieren Walker David Walmsley - Rick Macy Emily Bevan - Amy Dyer Stephen Thompson - Philip Wilson Steve Evets - Bill Macy Karen Henthorn - Janet Macy
INT. THE LEGION - CORRIDOR NEXT TO TOILETS
PHILIP guides KIEREN and AMY towards the chair designated for Rick and hastily pulls over another seat.
AMY (sarcastic)
Wow, it’s the VIP lounge.
PHILIP (as he places the second chair)
Enjoy your night.
Philip gives Amy a sly once over, is about to leave when...
Rick exits the mens’s toilets wiping his mouth. He sees Kieren. Freezes. Turns to ice. He does. If you were to go up to him now and push him he’d topple over and smash into a million little pieces. Kieren goes up to the edge of the PDS sufferer area. Rick snaps back into reality. Notices out of the corner of his eye Philip looking at him.
RICK
Alright, mate?
Rick sticks out his hand. It trembles ever so slightly. Kieren looks at Rick. At his outstretched hand. He’s stunned by Rick’s response. He was expecting... what? Fireworks? A passionate embrace? Maybe not, not here, but certainly he wasn't expecting an ‘alright mate’ and a bloody handshake. He takes Ricks hand none the less.
KIEREN
It’s good to see you, Rick.
RICK
Yeah. Good to see you too, Ren.
Rick’s eyes dart over to Philip. He takes his hand back.*
RICK (CONT’D) (beat)
I’m sitting out there.
KIEREN
Right. Well I can’t go out there.
RICK
Why not?
Kieren looks at Rick. Really? You really don’t know why?
KIEREN
Rules.
RICK
Who says?
KIEREN
Philip.
Rick turns to Philip.
RICK
Lippy, what yer doin’ puttin’ Ren in ‘ere? It’s Ren, yer tart!
PHILIP
He’s, uh, he’s -
RICK
He’s a what?
PHILIP backs off. Rick lifts rope for Kieren. Kieren looks at Amy.
KIEREN
And...my friend?
RICK
Sure. If she must.
Kieren and Amy exit out the PDS sufferers’ area.
INT. THE LEGION - BAR AREA - NIGHT 4
KIEREN and AMY sit at RICK’S table. RICK drinks and chats with Kieren. GARY eyeballs Amy.
From the bar, BILL and JANET stare at Kieren, wary. Is the past repeating itself?**
RICK
The Trolley of Certain Death.
KIEREN
I forgot about that.
RICK
You made it. I rode it.
KIEREN
From the Den to the bottom of the crag.
RICK
Then, then, we made Lippy ride it. And he flew right off the path and into that bramble patch. YOU REMEMBER THAT, LIPPY?
*Rick did not end up taking his hand back while talking to grand ole Lippy. And he grabbed Kieren’s arm on the way out. Everyone say thank you David Walmsley!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
**I cheated a tiny bit with the order of the Bill and Janet shot, but I think this one captured that sentiment better than what got edited in the exact slot. Bonus Janet - ffs he’s back from the dead for seduction 2
