It's time for something new! I've known for a little while that my author photos were losing their juice - I just don't really look like that anymore, in all the little ways that I'm sure only I would ever notice. My brilliant friend Kate Dollarhyde is one of the best photographers I know, and this past weekend we got together to build a pond in my backyard, eat a weird carrot galette I tried to make, and take some pictures.
Tumblr media
We wandered along the trail near my house where I take walks in the morning until Kate spotted a little stream. When we made our way down into this tiny culvert, we discovered that it was rich with vibes, including a lot of water bugs and a VERY haunted-looking old rail tunnel. The railroad ties were submerged, and I was 90% sure that a spider the size of a rhinoceros was living in there, but we are intrepid. We took pictures as we listened to people passing overhead with no idea what was beneath them. We found ourselves under bridges, wading through huge thatches of what we were pretty sure wasn't poison ivy, chasing down light and laughing at my tendency to scrunch my nose when I don't know what to do with my face.
Tumblr media
We ended up with some of the best photos anyone has ever taken of me. I already knew Kate was amazing at capturing the essence of places and buildings on camera, and I had suspicions that she'd be an incredible portrait photographer -- yet I'm still completely blown away by her command of light and composition, and her unreal eye for the exact moment when a person looks the most like themself. I can't describe how grateful I am to benefit from her expertise. I hope y'all like these as much as I do!!

Hey jsyk, Parvati is an ace lesbian! Both of those are integral to her identity and it’s kind of sad to see you erase that fact. I rlly hope that was a mistake and not just lesbophobia bc I love ur art :((
oh i’m sorry, that’s not intentional. i spent time reading about her and i was lead to believe she was explicitly bi in addition to being ace. since i haven't played the game i can only rely on articles and what fans are saying, and the description i got was just “ace wlw”. later i read that her writer, kate dollarhyde, created her to reflect the identity of kate who (according to the article) is ace and bi. i suppose in my worry to not erase bisexual wlw i may have erased that part of her, and that’s my bad.
thing is, i’m getting conflicting “reports” now. i’ve heard people claim both that she’s lesbian and bisexual, and i can't seem to find anything that'd state that explicitly coming from the game itself or the creators. so unless someone is willing to help out and provide a link/quote/whatever, i think the best thing in my opinion is, in effort to not erase anyone, give her a wlw pin so we can include the whole spectrum.
rest assured, highlighting chara's identity is the very reason i'm doing this project, so yeah if i get a confirmation she's a lesbian i'll edit the pin to reflect that as well, definitely. i’m only 1 person doing research on 30 characters that, for the large part, i’m not that familiar with, so i’d be surprised if i didn’t make a mistake at some point. so thanks for the heads-up~

Good video game news! Vice just published an article about Parvati in The Outer Worlds! they interviewed one of Parvati’s writers, a bi ace woman. the article is focused on how ace people appreciate Parvati as representation & about how the writer, Kate Dollarhyde, used her own feelings & anxieties about being ace as inspiration. it’s not really long & doesn’t say anything ground breaking, but it’s a really nice and respectful article! Parvati’s VA, Ashly Burch, shared it on Twitter today

2019 Hugo Award finalists announced
Tumblr media
The 2019 Hugo Award nominees have been announced; the Hugos will be presented this summer at the 2019 World Science Fiction Convention in Dublin, Ireland.
Normally, I find that I've read and reviewed a huge slice of the year's finalists, but this year is different; I've done a lot less reading lately, partly because I wrote two books in 2018 and partly because the new EU Copyright Directive ate my life for about 10 months in the past year.
I was a little sad to be so far behind the curve when I saw the new list, but then I realized that this meant that I had a bunch of really exciting books to add to my to-be-read pile!
One notable inclusion: the Archive of Our Own fanfic archive -- a project of the Organization for Transformative Works (for whose advisory board I volunteer) -- is up for "Best Related Work."
Congrats to all the nominees!

The magazine for which I am poetry editor, Strange Horizons, has been nominated for a Hugo each of the last seven years—every year the semi-pro category has existed. However, we have a huge volunteer editorial staff and a sprawling number of departments, so we rotate whose name goes on the nomination. This year is the first time my actual name has appeared on the Hugo ballot, although it’s not the first time my work has.
Best Semiprozine
Strange Horizons, edited by Jane Crowley, Kate Dollarhyde, Vanessa Rose Phin, Vajra Chandrasekera, Romie Stott, Maureen Kincaid Speller, and the Strange Horizons Staff
Neat milestone. It’ll be especially cool if we win this year. We have never won; too much very excellent competition. My money is on Uncanny winning a fourth time in a row, which tells you less about which magazines I read (I’ve been subscribed to FIYAH) than my approach to statistical forecasting.

hi! has there ever been an official writing system made for any of the languages of eora, or anything fanmade to your knowledge? making languages and writing systems is one of my favorite hobbies and im just recently getting into poe and loving how much effort was put into each of the languages, theyre the perfect blend of obvious real world influences while being completely original, and huana/rauataian struck me especially because i love the sound of pacific islander languages. dankeschööööön!
Thank you.  I’m glad you like them.  Yes.  I created orthographies for Eld Aedyran/Aedyran, Vailian, Engwithan, Huana, and Rauatan.  Kate Dollarhyde created one for Seki.
