this excerpt alone, alongside the discovery of katniss’ prep-team really humanized them i think. keeping pets, because as humans we feel a love and fondness for small, adorable things. octavia doing the same, and finding a care for what people would think of as mundane and vermin. but the point is that we find the good in things, and we see differently when it comes to things that are often shunned or outcasted.

I like to imagine after a few years everlark get really comfortable around each other; especially because they spend so much time one on one and being hermits.

Like with their bodies/nudity in general. After Peeta gets out of the shower he just walks around for a while in no hurry to get dressed. Or when he calls Katniss to look at his artwork and she rolls out of bed, butt naked, and comes in and hangs out with him for a while, no thoughts, her head totally empty.

i love that we have the little tidbit in canon that is the “i don’t care if you see me” moment down by the water in the first arena 💀 like, this boy is not only in front of his crush but quite literally on national television. LIVE national television.

he clearly has quite a relaxed attitude towards nudity, doesn’t seem to have be embarrassed by johanna stripping off in the elevator, and so i think the only thing stopping him from lounging around in whatever state of undress would be the fear of making katniss uncomfortable - because she, on the other hand, clearly does not share his relaxed attitude!

i think that, as you said, it would take a good few years to break those boundaries down. earlier, she’s fine with it in their bedroom. but it’s only when they’re really comfortable in their relationship that she would slip down to meet him at the breakfast table, still bare from the night before and a little bashful about it too (the shutters on the window are of course firmly closed. she would die if so much as one of the geese looked at her).

Excuse me as I ramble for a moment but-

When Katniss and Peeta go into their first games, the prep teams practically wax them bare. They go as far as to permanently prevent Peeta from ever growing facial hair (correct me if I’m wrong- I could be misremembering). And I just think that’s a very interesting choice to make. They want Peeta to look young. They want both of them bare, like new born babies. Which is so wicked in such a specific way. They want people to remember that they aren’t making adults fight, they’re forcing vulnerable, naive, full of potential, CHILDREN, (the FUTURE of Panem) to fight to the death.

And yet simultaneously, they also want Katniss to have an Epic Rack™️. Which throws my whole theory of them wanting them to look like children out the window but STILL.

I guess there’s a lot that could be said about the beauty standards and body modifications that the capital people put themselves through. Which could be a whole other rant/analysis in of itself. Anyways I had a point to all of this but then I kind of debunked my own claim so. Uh. Yeah.

But to continue my random ramble - I like to head-cannon Peeta as still being able to grow a beard bc I’ve reached that stage in my life where I think beards are HOT and beard Peeta would kill me /pos

How Effie Shows There's Hope For The Capitol

The Capitol is separated from the districts both by its mountains but also by its culture. They dress strangely, modify their bodies, talk in a strange accent, and have a desensitization towards the violence of the Hunger Games. To the Capitol people, it's really all just a game where the fun of it all covers the brutality of the Games. Most Capitol people don't see the tributes as People until they're crowned Victor. More on this later.

In "Catching Fire", the lavishness of the Capitol is shown at the end of the Victory Tour. Katniss and Peeta attend massive parties in the Capitol, with the last one being in President Snow's mansion. There are tables upon tables of food and Katniss and Peeta are stuffed to the brim, unable to eat another bite. Katniss's prep team approach them and ask why they're not eating and this scene transpires.

"“I have been, but I can't hold another bite,” I say. They all laugh as if that's the silliest thing they've ever heard.

“No one lets that stop them!” says Flavius. They lead us over to a table that holds tiny stemmed wineglasses filled with clear liquid. “Drink this!”

Peeta picks one up to take a sip and they lose it.

“Not here!” shrieks Octavia.

“You have to do it in there,” says Venia, pointing to doors that lead to the toilets. “Or you'll get it all over the floor!”

Peeta looks at the glass again and puts it together. “You mean this will make me puke?”

My prep team laughs hysterically. “Of course, so you can keep eating,” says Octavia. “I've been in there twice already. Everyone does it, or else how would you have any fun at a feast?”

I'm speechless, staring at the pretty little glasses and all they imply. Peeta sets his back on the table with such precision you'd think it might detonate. “Come on, Katniss, let's dance.” (Collins, 38 - 39).

By this point, Katniss had commented she'd come to think of the Capitol people as pets or children. People simply didn't know any better, but this shocked her back to Reality. “You go along, thinking you can deal with it, thinking maybe they're not so bad, and then you—”, (Collins, 39) Peeta said.

But just because the Capitol people have been fed a laced diet of The Games Are Necessary for their Survival and That It's All Okay, doesn't mean they are incapable of breaking out of this mindset. For this, I want to examine Effie Trinket.

Effie Trinket is fascinating. First off, the movie did a wonderful job with her costumes, seriously they're amazing. In the movies, they used the wonderful actress Elizabeth Banks to really develop her character. We first meet Effie during the Reaping, she's the escort for the tributes and is the one who actually draws the names. She's described as "Effie Trinket, District 12's escort, fresh from the Capitol with her scary white grin, pinkish hair, and spring green suit." (Collins 17 - 18).

Effie is this light bubbly character who is insistent on keeping a schedule. In previous years, she hasn't gotten attached to her escortees but this year is different with Katniss and Peeta, where she sticks with them the entire way. It's Effie who warns the two that Haymitch will be their survival, and she stays with their training, the interview, and the scoring, even though she doesn't have to. In the arena, Katniss assumed that it was Effie working alongside Haymitch to talk up sponsorship for her.

Effie can be seen floundering with her idealogy in "Catching Fire" with the announcement of the Quarter Quell. She seems horrified that Both Katniss and Peeta are going back into the arena and thinks it's unfair even though she is at first scared to voice this. I chalk this up to the fact that Effie had allowed herself to get attached to Katniss and Peeta. These were her two Victors who would have their wonderful happy lives and get married and she would get to see them forever - she didn't have to worry about losing them. Then suddenly she is forced to confront the fact she will be losing both. Remember what I said earlier? Capitol people only get attached to their Victors. There were a lot of distressed Capitol citizens when the Quarter Quell was announced with even some screaming for the games to be canceled.

Not only was there Effie but there was also Plutarch and the Props crew who all gave up their cushy lives for the Cause they believed was worth sacrificing their comforts for, they have no tragic backstory - they realized something was wrong and began to work against the system. While the people of the Capitol seem beyond hope, this is proven wrong by these characters.

This is our currently last planned post for this series. This was all actually a final research paper on analyzing The Hunger Games. I hoped you enjoyed and I might return to make more posts in the future.

EVERLARK OUTFITS: THE VICTORY TOUR

This part of “Catching Fire” is done (finally) so I put it all together;) DISTRICT 11, THE SQUARE

I go to my compartment and let the prep team do my hair and makeup. Cinna comes in with a pretty orange frock patterned with autumn leaves. I think how much Peeta will like the color. <…> As the train is pulling into the District 11 station, Cinna puts the finishing touches on my outfit, switching my orange hairband for one of metallic gold and securing the mockingjay pin I wore in the arena to my dress. <…> I can hear the anthem beginning outside in the square. Someone clips a microphone on me. Peeta takes my left hand. // Catching Fire, ch. 4

I think this dress should be a little semi-official so I choose cape sleeve sheath midi dress. It’s perfect for autumn (and they have early autumn weather there in 11th). The hair is just plain + gold hairband = girlish innocent look like the one after the games (this tactics they choose for the Tour). Plus I wanted to draw Katniss with her natural straight hair because i draw her with her braid usually ;) And again nothing about Peeta’s outfit. You know I feel like Portia 😅 because I have to choose how to dress Peeta. I’m not complaining through. So it is black suit with golden buttons (matching Katniss’s hairband and pin), thin soft orange sweater and black leather shoes.

DISTRICT 11, THE DINNER

A pale pink strapless dress brushes my shoes. My hair is pinned back from my face and falling down my back in a shower of ringlets. Cinna comes up behind me and arranges a shimmering silver wrap around my shoulders. He catches my eye in the mirror. “Like it?”  “It's beautiful. As always,” I say. “Let's see how it looks with a smile,” he says gently. // Catching Fire, ch.5

DISTRICT 7

Jackson has devised a game called «Real or Not Real» to help Peeta. He mentions something he thinks happened, and they tell him if it’s true or imagined, usually followed by a brief explanation. <...> But since Peeta’s greatest confusion centers around me—and not everything can be explained simply—our exchanges are painful and loaded, even though we touch on only the most superficial of details. The color of my dress in 7. My preference for cheese buns. The name of our math teacher when we were little. Reconstructing his memory of me is excruciating. Perhaps it isn’t even possible after what Snow did to him. But it does feel right to help him try. // Mockingjay, ch. 19

So we have only one sentence in “Mockingjay” about this outfit. And still I decided to draw it because I have a theory (head canon?) about it. I think Peeta remembers the color of her dress because it was special night for him (a lot of kisses and attempts to sneak away from everyone and maybe it felt very real at times) and also because she had two braids and the dress was red. RED is the color ❤️. / Peeta has dark red + black + a little bit gold which is also sexy color combination.

DISTRICT 5 I volunteer to take Annie back to my house in 12, where Cinna left a variety of evening clothes in a big storage closet downstairs. All of the wedding gowns he designed for me went back to the Capitol, but there are some dresses I wore on the Victory Tour.  <…> Annie wears a green silk dress I wore in 5, Finnick one of Peeta’s suits that they altered— the clothes are striking. <…>  As surely as the embroidery stitches in Annie’s gown were done by Cinna’s hand, the frosted flowers on the cake were done by Peeta’s.  // Mockingjay, ch. 16

DISTRICT 2

Girl talk. That thing I've always been so bad at. Opinions on clothes, hair, makeup. So I lie. “Yeah, he's been helping me design my own clothing line. You should see what he can do with velvet.” Velvet. The only fabric. I could think of off the top of my head. “I have. On your tour. That strapless number you wore in District Two? The deep blue one with the diamonds? So gorgeous I wanted to reach through the screen and tear it right off your back,” says Johanna. // Catching Fire, Chapter 15

This description gave me strong “Anastasia” feels 😅. So I loosely based Katniss dress on Anastasia’s ballet evening gown. For Peeta I chose tuxedo jacket similar to Salvatore Ferragamo design for FF 12/13.  Neo classic, purple velvet, shiny shoes. Also I decided to include a cane, both to help Peeta to have some rest during all this Tour activities and as an accessory.

DISTRICT 12

When we reach the mayor's house, I only have time to give Madge a quick hug before Effie hustles me off to the third floor to get ready. After I'm prepped and dressed in a full-length silver gown, I've still got an hour to kill before the dinner, so I slip off to find her. <…> She [Madge] saw my reflection behind her and smiled. “Look at you. Like you came right off the streets of the Capitol.” // Catching Fire, ch.6

When I started drawing this one I just felt that I need to make it look very “Capitol”. So I added some feathers. A LOT of sparkling feathers, haha. Also there are some “moon and stars” accessories in Katniss’ hair because this silver gown gives me moonlight vibes. For Peeta I came up with classic suit but made him wear it casually.
